Finalising our NBA Live 16 Wishlist; Last Call for Wishes

We’re looking to finalise our Wishlist for NBA Live 16, so that we can submit it to the development team at EA Tiburon along with a summary of the Top 15-20 Wishes from the community. As such, this is a last call for wishes: if you have suggestions, bug reports, or any constructive feedback that you’d like to put out there and pass along to the developers, be sure to post it in this thread.

Additionally, I’ve started a thread here for discussion on what you’d like to see in NBA Live 16’s Dynasty Mode. As long-time visitors and listeners to the NLSC Podcast are probably aware, Dynasty Mode has long been my favourite mode in NBA Live, and I know there are quite a few of us who have good ideas and strong opinions on what we want to get out of it. Suggestions and feedback posted in that thread will be submitted along with the main Wishlist.

As I’ve mentioned on the Podcast, we will be keeping the Wishlist thread open after we officially submit it, so that we can continue to discuss ideas for NBA Live 16. So, once again, if you’ve got any suggestions you’d like to send along to the NBA Live Development Team at EA Tiburon, please post them in our Wishlist thread ASAP!

The Friday Five: 5 Hopes for NBA Live 16

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

As I’ve already mentioned, we’re looking to finalise our Wishlist for NBA Live 16 as soon as possible, in order to submit it to the development team at EA Tiburon along with the community’s Top 15-20 suggestions for the game. If you haven’t added your feedback yet, by all means do so whenever you have a free moment. Once again, the developers are keeping tabs on the Forum, and we do have a direct line of communication to them, so our feedback isn’t just disappearing into the proverbial void.

I’ve already posted my contributions to the Wishlist, but for this week’s Friday Five, I thought I’d outline my hopes for NBA Live 16. With NBA Live 15 making some noteworthy improvements over NBA Live 14, it’s my hope that a healthy amount of my wishes will come to pass in this year’s game. Those wishes include…

Details on April 9th Roster Update for NBA Live 15

A new roster update has come through for NBA Live 15, featuring lineups that have been updated through April 9th, 2015. The roster includes over 3500 ratings changes, 13 player movement updates, and eight player accessory changes.

The two players that EA Sports are spotlighting in the latest roster are C.J. McCollum of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Aaron Brooks of the Chicago Bulls. McCollum’s increased playing time and production in Wesley Matthews’ absence has seen him jump two points to 70 overall, while Brooks’ performance while filling in for Derrick Rose has resulted in an increase to 76 overall, also a two point boost.

As always, feel free to post any thoughts on the latest roster update in the comments below, as well as in the feedback thread in the NBA Live 15 section of the NLSC Forum.

NBA 2K14 Servers Back Online

In the wake of the outcry over inaccessible saves following the shutdown of NBA 2K14’s servers, 2K has decided to extend online support for the game. Responding to inquiries from Polygon, a 2K Sports representative confirmed that online services have been restored for NBA 2K14, and that online support will henceforth be extended from 18 to 27 months. The full statement (via Polygon) is as follows:

2K has restored the NBA 2K14 servers and all online services. Beginning today, we are extending the support of all NBA 2K servers from 18 to 27 months following each release, giving our players more time to experience and enjoy the highest rated NBA simulation video game franchise. The opinions of our community continue to have a positive impact on our business decisions as we strive to create the best possible experience for all of our fans.

This is certainly good news, though the use of cloud saves still remains a contentious issue, and will hopefully be handled with care by both 2K and EA moving forward.

NBA 2K14 Server Shutdown Nukes Player Saves

In a disappointing turn of events, the shutdown of the NBA 2K14 servers that occurred last week has wiped out player saves for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game. Despite previous assurances that the server shutdown would result in online save files being converted to offline saves, several players have discovered that their saves are now inaccessible.

To further gamer frustration, 2K is not offering any warning about the situation, though 2K Support are confirming the issue when they are contacted. Polygon has published excerpts from one such email, which refers to the save files being “retired”, and goes on to say:

Sadly this may come as an inconvenience to some of you and if so we truly do understand and can feel for how upsetting this may seem as there always is a special bond that occurs between a player and their MyCareer save but all good things must come to an end and rest assured your MyCareer or MyGM went out while on top!

Such responses are unlikely to placate angry fans, who unsurprisingly have voiced their displeasure on social media. It remains to be seen what will happen with NBA 2K15, and whether 2K’s previous assurances of a contingency plan that allows gamers to continue their saves in offline mode will come to fruition.

The issue certainly highlights the drawbacks of the current approach to cloud saves and online features as it pertains to single player modes. Both NBA 2K and NBA Live make use of content that’s stored on their servers, which obviously hampers the game once the inevitable shutdown has taken place. The obvious expectation is that gamers will be upgrading to the latest game each year, but that’s not always the case. Additionally, gamers who do buy the game every year but also maintain their collection rather than trading in will sometimes revisit older games, especially if they’ve played a mode extensively, and pumped real money into the game to purchase upgrades.

Hopefully, both 2K and EA will find a way to avoid these pitfalls in the future, while still making good use of cloud technology.

Is James Harden the Cover Player for NBA 2K16?

At the risk of posting shameless clickbait…let’s speculate.

The cover image of the official NBA 2K Facebook page has been changed to a screenshot of James Harden, accompanied by the Houston Rockets logo, the NBA 2K15 logo, and the familiar hashtag, #YourTimeHasCome. While those are some fairly explicit references to last year’s game, it’s possible that 2K are dropping a subtle hint about the cover player of NBA 2K16. After all, cover players are generally signed well in advance of the NBA offseason (and the NBA video game “preview season”), and Harden has established himself as a prominent star in the league. It wouldn’t be a shock if he does end up being on the cover of NBA 2K16.

Having said that, Harden’s name is being mentioned a lot as one of the leading candidates to win this year’s Most Valuable Player award, so the new Facebook page cover may simply be recognising his performance this season. #YourTimeHasCome, the hashtag that was heavily used in the promotion of NBA 2K15, could just as easily refer to the possibility of Harden joining the esteemed group of players who have earned an MVP nod in years gone by.

At the end of the day, this is hardly confirmation of anything, and as gamers, we have a tendency to read too much into things, so take it with a healthy dose of salt. I for one wouldn’t be too surprised if James Harden does turn out to be the cover player of NBA 2K16; along with Russell Westbrook, he would seem to be a sensible and somewhat likely candidate. That said, we certainly won’t be reporting anything as fact until there’s an official announcement…or at least, a leak from a reputable source. Still, it’s fun to speculate in the meantime.

Do you think this is a subtle nod to James Harden being on the cover of NBA 2K16, or do you think it’s simply acknowledging him as a frontrunner in this year’s MVP race? If not Harden, who do you think will be on the cover of NBA 2K16? Sound off in the comments below!

Details on the April 2nd Roster for NBA Live 15

A new roster has come through for NBA Live 15, with lineups that have been updated through April 2nd. The roster also contains over 3700 ratings updates, and reflects the recent retirement of future Hall of Fame point guard Steve Nash.

Dwyane Wade and Kelly Olynyk are the two players in the spotlight this week. Wade’s overall has increased to 85 following his recent play, including a 40 point, six rebound and four assist performance in the Miami Heat’s win over the Detroit Pistons. Olynyk meanwhile has been very productive off the bench for the Boston Celtics, improving one point to 78 overall in the latest roster as a result.

You can check out a spreadsheet listing all of the changes in the April 2nd roster here. If you have any feedback on the rosters, feel free to post it in the comments below, as well as in this thread in the NBA Live 15 section of the Forum.

The Friday Five: 5 More Basketball Video Game Easter Eggs

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

It’s been a couple of years since I compiled a list of some of the cool things that we’ve found while playing basketball video games, as well as poking around in their files. Seeing as though Easter is upon us once again, I thought it’d only be appropriate to take a look at five more Easter Eggs that we’ve discovered over the years.

Secrets and Easter Eggs definitely add fun to video games, rewarding us for exploring every nook and cranny of the game world, going off the beaten track and trying something outlandish, or on a more meta level, hunting through the game’s data files. Sports games aren’t necessarily jam packed with them – or at least, their Easter Eggs aren’t usually as wild, wacky, or creative as other game genres – but there’s usually something interesting to find, be it dummied out content, leftover files, or something completely unexpected. Let’s take a look at another five basketball video game Easter Eggs that you may or may not be aware of.

NBA 2K15 Patch #4 Out Now on Xbox One; Patch Notes Released

The fourth official patch for NBA 2K15 is now available for the Xbox One version of the game. PC and PlayStation 4 users have already received the patch, back on March 12th. Full patch notes have also been made available, and they are as follows:

  • (XB1) Online games will no longer disconnect during gameplay when one or more users had minimized the title and returned while sitting on the Team Select screen prior to playing.
  • Made a number of improvements to the player progression/regression systems that drive player ratings in MyGM/MyLEAGUE/MyCAREER.
  • Fixed a rare case where the user team would trade for the upcoming pick mid-draft (MyGM/MyLEAGUE), but the team that traded away the pick would retain the rights to the player.
  • Fixed an issue where some users were unable to access specific Online Leagues.
  • Removed “auto-hesitation” dribble animations that played when driving near defenders. Smoothed out the sprint to jog transition in the back court.
  • Tuned shot percentages for a more obvious distinction between open and covered shots. Slight increase to contact dunk frequency for high level dunkers.
  • Corrected an issue in MyTEAM where improved player badges were not appearing in the correct color when viewing a head-to-head game. The correct badge level with appropriate gameplay adjustments are now being made.
  • The ‘Bruiser’ and ‘Hardened’ badges will now unlock properly in MyCAREER when the appropriate conditions are met.
  • Fixed a rare case where some users would occasionally see the title hang during the series of legal screens at the start of the game.
  • (XB1) Corrected an issue where Park Chat through the My NBA 2K15 app would not work for some users.
  • (XB1) Fixed an issue where a user’s gamertag would not update in the Roster Creator interface when the gamertag was changed outside of the title.

Feel free to discuss the patch in the comments section below, as well as in this thread in the NBA 2K15 section of the Forum!
