The Tuesday Triple: Tips for PC Patchers

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

It is amazing for me to look back on my almost 9 years of being active here in the NLSC community and see how much, and how little, has changed. When I first found the NLSC, I was looking for updates for my friend’s PC copy of NBA Live 2000. When I was forced to make an account that I never used in 2003, it was to learn more about the recently released NBA Live 2004. Finally, in 2005 I posted for the first time, sharing a mod I created for NBA Live 2005. While the technology, tools and games have changed over the years, I am genuinely surprised how the patching culture has evolved, but still deals with the same issues. Here are some tips I have for patchers releasing patches for the current or past NBA games.

Dumb Fact Monday: Alcatraz in NBA 2K14

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

When poking around the NBA 2K14 files on PC, you might come across references that only apply to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, and of course the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version which the PC port is based upon. While many of these are expected, there has been one specific reference that I have yet to understand or fully explain within the files of NBA 2K14.

NBA Live 14’s Big Patch Coming Next Week

EA Sports’ Marketer Ty Stover has Tweeted out some details regarding the oft-mentioned patch for NBA Live 14. He mentions that the patch, and a video explaining it, will be coming as early as Monday. The patch will include updates to lighting and gameplay, as well as add the practice mode we’ve been seeing in recent official NBA Live videos. No other details have been provided regarding the contents of the patch, or any other specific changes outside of adding the practice mode.

You can tell us your hype level for the upcoming update in the comments below or in the NBA Live 14 Forum. Thanks to TOMBA over at Operation Sports for the Tweet that brought the information out, and reporting on it.

The Tuesday Triple: 3 Things NBA Live 14 Needs

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

Since its release, NBA Live 14 has been both deservedly and undeservedly trashed for its gameplay and graphics. While the game is undoubtedly lacking in many areas when compared to NBA 2K14’s next-gen effort, it has provided myself and others with hours of mostly fun gameplay and a strange attraction to keep coming back for more. Even though it can be fun, there are still at least three major areas that need improvement that I can only wish will be included in the mythical yet-to-be-released patch by EA Sports.

Dumb Fact Monday: Moving Hair

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

For the first entry, I’m taking a look at dynamic hair physics in basketball video games. While I was certain this was a recent breakthrough for the genre, I was surprised to find out that I completely missed the first game to feature player hair that wasn’t cemented in place.

March Madness 2K14 Mod Released

Project leader bigh0rt has released the first full version release of an NCAA mod for NBA 2K14 PC. Titled March Madness 2K14, the v1 release is easily one of the most comprehensive NCAA mods released for an NBA PC game. bigh0rt‘s description sums it up best;

What started as a simple 5-team Demo has evolved into the most in-depth, accurate College Basketball project the NLSC has ever seen! Accurate looks, ratings, styles of play, presentation, overlays; you name it!

No hyperbole needed, bigh0rt and those helping the project have truly delivered with this mod. Featuring 30 NCAA teams (with plans for expansion) complete with accurate uniforms, courts, team gear, coach profiles, playbooks, and even player gear, ratings, and appearances, bigh0rt’s return to PC modding is nothing short of impressive. Best of all, there are two versions of the mod release: a Lite Version that does not overwrite or conflict with the NBA game, and a Full Version that includes a CBS scoreboard, NCAA fight song soundtrack, authentic dornas, and Association mode support.

You can get the mod and additional information in the Release Thread. It is also worth mentioning that behindshadows is also working on his annual college mod as well, which you can check out here.

Details on Latest NBA Live 14 Content Update

If you played NBA Live 14 the past couple of days, you may have noticed a system-level patch download and install, as well as an in-game download. Sean O’Brien has just posted an update on what was changed in this latest update, as well as reaffirming the promise for additional updates coming soon.

Of note, Sean mentioned that shot timing has been adjusted both offline and online, with tweaks being made to limit mid and long range shot blocking. The crowd noise and camera issues in BIG Moments and LIVE Season modes have also been fixed.

Feel free to share your impressions of the latest patch in the comments below and in our NBA Live 14 Forum.

RED MC for NBA 2K14 PC, Xbox 360, & PS3 Released!

Vl@d Zola Jr. has released the updated version of his amazing save editing tool RED MC, which now supports NBA 2K14 current gen files! For those who are unaware, this tool allows modders to completely customize NBA 2K games to essentially whatever they’d like. 2K12’s Ultimate Base Roster, the annual NCAA mods and my many street mods are all possible thanks to the abilities of this tool.

If you want to learn how to use the tool, my numerous tutorials from last year still apply for the new version; you can check those out here. When patchers release their mods, be sure to keep an eye on our Releases Forum, and remember we offer free file hosting in our Download Database.

You can get all information on RED MC, its pay-for licenses, technical support, and download links in its Official Forum Thread. To hear from Vlad himself, and learn about future plans for RED MC, check out the recent NLSC Podcast!

Huge Amount of Information on NBA 2K14 Next Gen

I honestly don’t know where to begin. There is a recap thread of all the tweets I followed from the press reveal right here. I will attempt to summarize below.

NBA 2K14 next gen is not considered a port, but a new engine called Eco Motion. Minute details like dirt and scuff on the rims, fingerprints on courtside monitors and leg tattoos are in the game. Animations change based on surroundings, no two landings from jumpers are the same, and variable wingspans affect gameplay. NBA Today features video highlights from real life games. There is new presentation, new arenas and lighting is detailed down to reflections and Kelvin units. Coaches have individual AI to affect strategies and Emotion Plus will affect gameplay and players. Players themselves will be unique, with Kobe Bryant being an Alpha Dog, fierce and demanding the ball. High and Low emotions are accounted for. MyTEAM has been confirmed for Next Gen.

MyPLAYERs are cyberface quality and we can even play as a scanned/mapped Da_Czar. MyPLAYERs are used for MyGM, which replaces Association mode. You have to manage players through discussions and can get fired for lack of moral/chemistry. You can even control hot dog prices; Leftos is very proud of the mode.

MyCAREER is cinematic and seems kind of linear and storydriven based. You can make decisions, you have a rival for the rookie showcase and characters are involved as well including buddies and agents. Over 40 hours are required to be put into the mode for the first year alone and evidently it has GTA quality voice acting.

Park was also mentioned, which sounds like my personal 2K wet dream: an “open field of courts” with up to 100 other MyPLAYERs playing against each other. It’s an online mode where users can hang out.

This has got to be the tip of the iceberg. We will do our best to keep you updated, but be sure to check the NBA 2K14 forums for additional details…wow.

Blacktop Revitalization for NBA 2K14 PC – 64 Courts

To wrap up my pre-RED MC modding for NBA 2K14, I have released the foundations for the annual Blacktop Revitalization mod for NBA 2K14 PC. Since we are limited to a single street court for Blacktop Mode this year, I have decided to take advantage of this and create specific rosters for each individual court I have made in the past and will make in the future. Coupled with casual Street Gear by bigh0rt, this provides a very unique and customizable experience for Blacktop Mode.

To start off, you must download bigh0rt’s uniforms here, then you can pick and choose which courts you want in the new Blacktop Courts & Mods section of the NLSC Downloads database. If you have previously installed my Midnight Ballers mods, I’ve created a Starter Pack with only uniforms and rosters for all of those courts, preventing the need for you to redownload everything.

I hope you enjoy it, please check out the video mod review below for more information!

NBA Live 14 Official Gameplay Trailer

EA Sports have uploaded the official gameplay trailer for the upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4 launch title, NBA Live 14. The trailer mashes together many different players’ moves in a 5 on 5 gameplay setting with the only real editing done to the video being camera cuts. Kyrie Irving, Carmelo Anthony, Deron Williams, Steve Nash and Dwyane Wade, among others, all make appearances.

The trailer does a good job showing off dribbling moves, basic player movement, and the overall art style for the game. NBA 2K14 OMG Next Gen Trailer

Set to Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight, the trailer showcases all the amazing graphics, lens flares, facial expressions, new cloth physics, smooth animations and overall amazingness we expected from 2K Sports on the next gen consoles.

Well worth the watch, and prepare to clear any dangerous objects away from your immediate area so as to not injure your jaw as it drops. One month left.

Good News Regarding NBA 2K13 Patches in NBA 2K14

Now that NBA 2K14 has been released on PC, we can all begin figuring out what work that went into last year’s game can be used in the new one. Thankfully, it seems that mostly everything art-wise created for NBA 2K13 will work in NBA 2K14 on PC. This means cyberfaces, uniforms, courts, stadiums, and other files work directly in NBA 2K14 without any complicated conversion process!

You can keep up to date on all of the known files that work in this Forum thread, and be sure to keep an eye on our Releases Forum and Download database for NBA 2K14, it is going to be a great year for patching!
