Dumb Fact Monday: Obama in NBA 2K Games

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

President Obama showing up in NBA 2K video games is something, I at least hope, most of us know about. 2K Sports touted his cameo when he debuted NBA 2K11’s Association Mode, showing up in a series of photo-op images with that year’s virtual NBA Champions. It is a great presentation addition, even if he continues to show up years after 2016. Since those photo-ops are rendered in-game, that means Obama has a cyberface file on-disc, which of course begs for unofficial mods, and even Obama getting into coaching with a bug in NBA 2K12.

The Tuesday Triple: My Three Best Mixes

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

Before I start the very small countdown of my favorite mixes that I made, I want to remind new readers that I did a Tuesday Triple on MomentousCeltic’s Mixes. While my mixes are no where near as well done as MC’s, or any of the current mix making elite seen on YouTube, they still hold a lot of sentimental value to me. I actually underestimated how many mixes I have made over the years, and some of the favorites I had in mind for this article have aged terribly since I last watched them. Nevertheless, here are my three favorite basketball video game mixes that I made as of today.

Custom Soundtracks Now Possible for NBA 2K13 PC

The day has finally come, we can now have custom soundtracks on the PC version of NBA 2K13. After all the work nesa24 has done, he provided Leftos with the needed information and just hours later a tool was created. The NBA 2K Audio Editor currently only supports NBA 2K13’s menu music file, but since NBA 2K11, 2K12 and other audio files such as commentary share the same format, it is possible to see an expanded usage of the tool. Below you will find a step-by-step video tutorial I created, which goes over the tool, how to select viable songs, how to shorten songs if need be and of course, how to import them into the file.

Please make your way over to the Forum Thread and say thank you to nesa24 and Leftos for this fantastic tool!

The Friday Five: 5 Basketball Video Game Myths

Another Friday is upon us, so it’s time for a new edition of The Friday Five! If this is your first time reading The Friday Five and you’re wondering what it’s all about, it’s a feature that I post every Friday in which I talk about a variety of topics related to basketball video games, the real NBA and other areas of interest, providing my thoughts as either a list of five items or presenting them in Top 5 countdown format.

Last week I posted a countdown of the Top 5 Easter Eggs in basketball video games, so for this week’s Friday Five I’m taking a look at five basketball video game myths. Rumours and video games go hand in hand thanks to the presence of actual hidden content, the tendency for gaming publications to indulge in April Fools’ gags, trolls intentionally spreading misinformation and simple misunderstandings. Basketball games are no different, so let’s separate fact from fiction and debunk five basketball video games myths.

NLSC Podcast – The “Lost” Pilot

Leftos and I have taken a short break from the weekly NLSC Podcast over the holiday season, however new episodes will resume early in the new year. In the meantime, we invite you to check out the “lost” pilot episode that Pdub and I recorded a couple of years ago, in which we interviewed bigball12, who as you may recall was able to get his hands on the unreleased retail version of NBA Elite 11. In addition to getting his thoughts on the cancelled game, we also chat about the first NBA Jam reboot by EA Sports, the future of the NBA Live series as we saw it at the time and NBA 2K11.

This was our first attempt at a podcast and though it took a while to get off the ground after that initial test pilot, we’re enjoying bringing you a weekly podcast discussing basketball video games, the real NBA and more. We hope you’ve been enjoying the episodes, thank you once again to everyone who has tuned in thus far and offered feedback. Click the Play button below to listen to the show, feel free to add your thoughts here in Forum or in the comments below, and check back soon as we pick it up again with Episode #12!
