NBA 2K12 Developer Insight #10 – Controls

The tenth Developer Insight for NBA 2K12 has been posted over on the official Facebook page. This time, senior game designer Mike Wang checks in to talk about the controls in NBA 2K12.

Mike begins the Insight talking about the improvements to ballhandling in NBA 2K12, including the removal of the “hunchback” dribbling animations, refinements to speed and explosiveness of players, the blowout dribble and sizeups. He goes on to talk about the new tech used in shooting controls and Signature Styles called Shot Compositing, improvements to the code for changing shots and the “flick flick” shots and some of the defensive tools that can be used to counter the new and improved offensive moves. Finally, Mike mentions some changes to free throw shooting in this year’s game including more realistic timing windows and error margins depending on a player’s free throw shooting ability.

Be sure to give it a read and leave a comment below with your thoughts or join in the discussion here in the NBA 2K12 section of the NLSC Forum.

There are ten screenshots in all which explain advanced offense, on-ball defense, Isomotion, passing, the shot stick, triple threat moves, post shots, post moves and the default basic controls on offense and defense.

Be sure to check them out here in Operation Sports’ NBA 2K12 gallery and then have your say in the comments or this thread in our Forum. Remember that the NBA 2K12 demo will be available on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network in a matter of hours, so it won’t be long before we get to try out the new moves and controls for ourselves.

NBA 2K12 Hands-On Preview #2 (Operation Sports)

Steve over at Operation Sports has posted his impressions of NBA 2K12.  It’s well worth the read but the biggest new information from the preview is new crowd interactions with the ball, standing alleyoops, areha-specific broadcast camera views and the ability to retire at any time in My Player.

After you check out the preview, head into this Forum topic and let us know what you think.

NBA 2K12’s Historic Teams Won’t Be Available Online

Owen Good has posted an article over on Kotaku discussing the impact of the NBA lockout on NBA 2K12, in particular the lack of roster updates out of the box. Owen also confirms that the 34 historic teams will not be playable online, as it was with the Jordan Challenge teams in NBA 2K11.

He also weighs in on the predictions that NBA 2K12’s sales could be cut in half due to the lockout preventing updated rosters and rookies from being included in the base game, suggesting it is an overreaction (an assessment I would be inclined to agree with). For those who are unaware, updated rosters and rookies will be patched in to the game once the lockout has ended, though rookie speech and faces will be available in the game files out of the box which is something we’ll hopefully be able to take advantage of in the modding community.

What’s your take on the situation? Does the absence of updated rosters or inability to take historic teams online affect your decision to buy NBA 2K12? Leave a comment below or post your thoughts in this thread.

NBA 2K12 NBA’s Greatest Screenshot: ’86 Celtics & Hawks

The preview talks about the smoothness of the animations and fluidity of the controls, touts improved AI and signature styles, mentions enhancements to the grading system and the intelligence of CPU teammates and opponents in My Player, covers the expanded post game and also offers a few thoughts on NBA’s Greatest.

It’s well worth checking out, so give it a look and join in the discussion in this thread in our Forum. Steve Noah, who has also had hands-on time with the game, has indicated that he will be posting his impressions next week.

2K Sports have revealed via the official NBA 2K Facebook page that the NBA 2K12 demo will be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 20th. NBA 2K12 Developer Insight #9 – Defense

Another new Developer Insight has been posted on the NBA 2K Facebook page.  This time we are looking at Defense.

Seems like there are a lot of subtle changes to defense this year.  In my opinion, the biggest improvements are being able to move while keeping your hands up and a new animation technology that modifies mo-capped animations so that the player’s hands can find the ball better.  Seems like good stuff all around in the name of keeping balance between offensive and defensive players.  Comment and check out the Forum thread for more information and impressions.

NBA 2K12 Developer Insight #8 – Post Game

Another new Developer Insight is up and it details the overhauled post game in NBA 2K12.   Many things were changed from 2K11, so many that it’s difficult to summarize.

There will be a Defensive Insight tomorrow and a Controls Trailer next week.  Post your thoughts in the comments and discuss in the Forum.

NBA 2K12 Gameplay – Clippers vs Celtics (OS)

Operation Sports has posted an eight minute video of NBA 2K12 gameplay footage featuring the Clippers at the Celtics.

The game looks amazing.  Nice touches with the electronic dornas and overlays and Steve Kerr blends in really well.  That intro piece is amazing too.  October 4th can’t get here soon enough.  Comment on this post right here and discuss in the Forum in this topic.
