NBA 2K14 MyCAREER Highlights: Year 6, Games 31-40

NBA 2K14 MyCAREER Highlights: Year 6, Games 31-40

My journey through Year 6 of MyCAREER in the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K14 continues, and I have the highlights to prove it! At Dee’s suggestion, I’ve been compiling a highlight reel every ten games to post on our YouTube channel, and now that I’m halfway through the season, there’s already been an assortment of spectacular moments.

Alley-oops are a recurring motif in the highlight reel for Games 31-40, as Philadelphia has been turned into The City of Brotherly Lobs! Although I’m enjoying putting the ball on a wire for Terry Hanson and Nerlens Noel to rack up those glorious assists, I’ve also loved being on the receiving end of lobs, including some ambitious inbounds alley-oops. The poster dunks in NBA 2K14 also remain extremely satisfying, with the Eco-Motion engine producing some beautiful animations. Throw in some flashy passes, ankle-breakers, and a few defensive highlights, and it should be clear just how much I’m enjoying Year 6 in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER!

I hope that highlight reel was just as fun to watch as it was to put together! There’ll be more reels on the way as the journey continues, as well as other basketball gaming content on the NLSC YouTube channel. As always, feel free to hit Dee and I up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play, and we’ll see what we can do.

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 1991 NBA Finals

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 1991 NBA Finals

If you’ve subscribed to the NLSC YouTube channel, then you may have already seen this week’s instalment of the NBA 2K14 Retro Series. If not, you’re in for a radical treat, as it’s a re-creation of Game 4 of the 1991 NBA Finals between Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and Magic Johnson’s Los Angeles Lakers!

Why Game 4 of the 1991 NBA Finals in particular? Well, I originally intended it to be the title-clinching Game 5, but I neglected to make some necessary adjustments to the Lakers’ lineup to accurately portray that contest. Obviously, these highlights would still work as a re-imagining of a non-specific clash from that Finals series, but I decided to make it Game 4 as it lines up with MJ doing it all at the offensive end in that game, from pouring in buckets to racking up assists. Indeed, he dished out more assists than Magic in Game 4, and his final line of 29 points and 12 assists is very close to the actual box score. Check it out!

As always, there’ll be more fun on the way very soon, so be sure to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel for more basketball gaming content! Remember that Dee and I are also open to suggestions for games that you’d like to see us play, so feel free to hit us up. Also be sure to submit your best plays to Dee to be featured in the weekly Top 10 countdown!

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 1985 76ers vs. Bucks

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 1985 76ers vs. Bucks

I’ve enjoyed making the NBA 2K14 Retro Series a more regular feature on our YouTube channel so far this year. However, I’ll actually have to play some more of those games as I’m now at the end of the footage that I captured prior to my old desktop crashing late last year! I’m presenting a fun showdown in the meantime though, as Julius Erving and the 1985 Philadelphia 76ers clash with Sidney Moncrief and the 1985 Milwaukee Bucks.

The 1985 76ers are one of NBA 2K’s oddball classic teams; not because they aren’t a good squad to include and a sensible one for Dr. J’s NBA’s Greatest challenge, but because in real life, they featured a rookie Charles Barkley. You won’t find Sir Charles on the team in the game of course, and since the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K14 doesn’t support modding (or even Create-a-Player), he’s conspicuously absent in this re-creation. Nevertheless, The Doctor is in vintage form, Sidney Moncrief is at the top of his game for the Bucks, and the game produced some great 80s NBA action. Check it out!

I’m not sure which showdown and era will be featured next, but the NBA 2K14 Retro Series is a lot of fun to produce, so there’ll be more to come! Until then, please subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel for more basketball gaming content, and feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play.

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 2005 Bulls vs. Suns

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 2005 Bulls vs. Suns

It’s time for the next instalment of the NBA 2K14 Retro Series! This time we’re flashing back to the 2005 season, with a showdown between a young Chicago Bulls team, and the 7 Seconds Or Less Phoenix Suns. And yes, the fact that that’s a retro matchup is a reminder of how quickly time flies!

Needless to say, as a Chicago Bulls fan, my fondest memories of the team are from the championship years of the 90s. However, I also have a great appreciation for those Baby Bulls squads that were beginning to grow up, and it was particularly exciting to see the team become relevant again in 2005. Meanwhile, Steve Nash’s return to Phoenix that same season helped make them a team to watch for years to come. It’s possible to re-create the 2005 Bulls and Suns in NBA 2K14 – minus a couple of players, of course – so I knew it’d make for a fun matchup for the NBA 2K14 Retro Series. Watch how it went down!

Since we’re firmly in the DVD era by this point, I haven’t added any retro filters to these highlights. However, keep your eyes peeled for another classic commercial! There are more instalments coming in the Retro Series, including old school showdowns, so stay tuned. In the meantime, be sure to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel for more basketball gaming content, and feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play.

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 1995 Western Conference Finals

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 1995 Western Conference Finals

The NBA 2K14 Retro Series continues with a re-creation of Game 6 of the 1995 Western Conference Finals between the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs! As you may recall, it was the deciding game of that iconic series, as Hakeem Olajuwon battled David Robinson with the season and a trip to the NBA Finals on the line.

As with the other games in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series, my take on Game 6 of the 1995 Western Conference Finals isn’t precise down to the last play and statistic. However, just like the real contest, it was a close one that saw the Spurs attempting some desperation shots in the waning seconds. Although The Dream and The Admiral were at the centre of things, all of the key players on both sides made big dunks, big threes, and big defensive plays in this throwback to the 90s. See for yourself!

In case you missed it, the previous entry in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series flashed back to the 2008 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. Some more retro matchups are on the way, so stay tuned, and be sure to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel! As always, feel free to suggest other basketball video games that you’d like to see Dee and I play as well.

Monday Tip-Off: Half a Decade in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER

Monday Tip-Off: Half a Decade in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some reflections on playing half a decade (and counting) in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER.

It’s wild that my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER is now in Year 6. That would’ve been unthinkable just a few years ago, as it took me a long time to warm up to the game! On top of that, I began a proper playthrough of the mode for a Wayback Wednesday feature posted in August of 2021, and by October that year, I’d decided that finishing my rookie season would be a good way to say goodbye to MyCAREER; at least for the moment. Three years later, I’m not only still playing that game, but I’ve finished four more full seasons on top of that!

There’s no doubt that it’s become one of my all-time favourite basketball gaming experiences. NBA 2K14 still holds up superbly on the sticks, and while MyCAREER is missing a few key features that I’ve enjoyed in later iterations of the mode, I also appreciate its simplicity and focus on the NBA. As far as the journey itself, I’ve been impressed by how each season has held my attention and provided its own subplots, even though the cutscene-driven story basically concluded after my rookie year. It’s been fascinating to see how the league has changed, and also, how some things have stayed the same. As I’m sure you can tell from my recaps, it’s been a fun half decade.

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 2008 NBA Finals

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: 2008 NBA Finals

The NBA 2K14 Retro Series was put on hold when my old desktop crashed late last year, putting a halt to my video production. However, I’m back in business with a new rig, which means the fun can now continue! In the most recent entry in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series, I flashed back to 2008 with an overtime thriller between the Nuggets and Magic. We’re staying in that season as the first instalment for 2024 is a re-creation of Game 6 of the 2008 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers.

As you may recall, the Celtics entered Game 6 of the 2008 NBA Finals up 3-2, following the Lakers’ win in Game 5 to stave off elimination. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen – aka The Boston Three Party – were determined to finish the job at home and deliver the Celtics their seventeenth championship. Easier said than done with Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol standing in your way! It was a great series that revived the NBA’s most legendary rivalry, and it was fun to put the teams together to re-create the showdown in NBA 2K14 for PlayStation 4. See how it played out, and keep your eyes peeled for an all-time classic NBA commercial during the halftime break!

Stay tuned for the next instalment, coming soon! As always, be sure to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel for more basketball gaming content, and feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play.

NBA Live 16 Christmas Showdown, Other Highlights

NBA Live 16 Christmas Showdown, Other Highlights

Merry Christmas and Season’s Greetings, basketball gamers! I hope that you’re all enjoying the festive season. That might include spending some time on the virtual hardwood, and indeed, that’s what Dee and I have been doing, playing a Christmas Day showdown between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors in NBA Live 16!

As you may recall, Christmas Day 2015 featured that NBA Finals rematch, and the special jerseys that were worn in that game are available in NBA Live 16. To that end, it only made sense to take control of the eventual champion Cavs in co-op play, and try to gain some revenge over the team that defeated them just a few months prior. It was a competitive battle with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving doing their thing, while the Splash Brothers gave us everything they had at the other end. It reminded us of how fun NBA Live 16 can be, and you’ll find the highlights below.

You can also look forward to our recap of the game in Episode #508 of the NLSC Podcast, which will be out soon. Prior to our most recent show, Dee also fired up NBA 2K24 PC with some NBA In-Season Tournament mods installed, and played the finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Indiana Pacers. On top of that, I’ve put together a highlight reel from Games 21-30 in Year 6 of my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER on PlayStation 4. Both of those videos can also be found below.

It’s been a great year of producing basketball gaming content for the NLSC YouTube channel, so be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already! As always, feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play. Once again, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and best wishes to you and your family!

The Friday Five: 5 Times My Games Imitated Real Moves

The Friday Five: 5 Times My Games Imitated Real Moves

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five recalls five times that I encountered real life moves being made by CPU-controlled teams in my games.

One of the oldest Wishlist requests when it comes to franchise modes is that they feature realistic player movement. This is actually an interesting concept, because many of the moves that we see in real life would probably be considered unrealistic if they occurred in a franchise or career mode game! Teams frequently don’t get equal value when they trade big name players, as the circumstances that result in superstar for superstar swaps are generally rare. Familiar faces end up in strange places, there are unexpected reunions, and loyalty between teams and players is often eroded.

With that in mind, with so many deals that once seemed so unlikely, who’s to say what constitutes realistic player movement in a video game? In fact, I’ve encountered moves made by CPU-controlled teams that, if they hadn’t happened in real life, would probably strike me as unrealistic. Indeed, playing through five seasons and counting in NBA 2K14 PS4’s MyCAREER has resulted in a number of such moves! They may differ in terms of the exact players involved and when they occurred, but the game’s trade and free agency logic still made moves that it couldn’t have known were coming when it was released. Here are five examples of my games imitating real life moves.

Happy Thanksgiving! Virtual Hardwood Highlights!

Happy Thanksgiving! Virtual Hardwood Highlights!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our virtual ballers in the United States! I realise that many of you are probably enjoying quality time with family and friends right now, but I wanted to offer up a couple of Thanksgiving treats in the form of NBA Jam: On Fire Edition and NBA Live 08 videos. Dee has also recently uploaded some great highlight reels for NBA 2K14 and NBA Live 16 that you should definitely catch if you haven’t already.

First up, there’s a seasonally-appropriate NBA Jam: On Fire Edition video, featuring a full game between The Gobblers and characters from SSX. I’m playing the game on Real AI difficulty, which means that the CPU is very aggressive, and throwing my own strategies back at me. These turkeys may have escaped ending up on the dinner table, but it was a tough challenge to avoid them being roasted on the virtual hardwood instead!

Next up is a redux of my re-creation of Dazzling Dunks & Basketball Bloopers’ recap of the 1988 Dunk Contest in NBA Live 08 PC. You may recall that I posted that re-creation back in February for Michael Jordan’s 60th Birthday, and I decided to create a picture-in-picture version that compared my efforts to the original segment. As for Dee’s videos, he put together a reel from our exciting co-op session on NBA 2K14 using 2012 rosters, as well as a game of NBA Live 16 that he played against the CPU. We discussed both of those games in Episode #504 of the NLSC Podcast.

Check out all of those videos below! Once again, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who is celebrating it today. Be sure to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel for more basketball gaming content, and as always, feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play.
