The Tuesday Triple: How We Handle Realism in Basketball Video Games

This is The Tuesday Triple! Originally, it was JaoSming’s answer to The Friday Five, but now that he’s at Visual Concepts working on 2KTV, it’s up for grabs whenever I have a topic that I’d like to cover in three points instead of five, or I can’t think of five items for a list or countdown. On this occasion, I’m using it to talk about how we handle realism in basketball video games.

Da_Czar’s creed sums it up in six words: Don’t play video games, play basketball. It’s a catchy slogan, the perfect mantra for anyone who wants to see basketball video games become as realistic as possible. For anyone who considers themselves a “sim gamer”, they’re words for us – and the developers, for that matter – to live by. Six words to eloquently and succinctly sum up what we want: realism in basketball video games, from top to bottom.

Do we really, though? Do we appreciate the realism that’s already present in basketball video games? Do we truly realise what realism means for the basketball gaming experience? Do we really know what we want?

New Poll: Which Modes Are You Playing Right Now?

Now that NBA Live 15 and NBA 2K15 have been out for a little while, and gamers have either had a chance to pick them up and get stuck into playing them, or elected to go back and play an older game, we have a new multiple choice poll for you all: “Which Modes Are You Playing Right Now?” Cast your vote now, and feel free to talk about some of your recent basketball gaming experiences in the comments section below!

Our previous poll asked “Who’s your early pick to win the 2015 NBA Championship?” The defending champion San Antonio Spurs were the favourites with 23% of the vote, just edging out the Cleveland Cavaliers with 22%. The Chicago Bulls were the third most popular pick at 19%, followed by the Houston Rockets (8%), the Miami Heat (7%), and the Portland Trail Blazers (4%). A further 17% believe another team entirely will win it all this year.

Don’t forget that you can join in all the discussion of the real NBA and other leagues in the NBA & Basketball Talk section of the NLSC Forum!

NBA 2K15 PC Modding Update: More Tools Released

As you may already be aware if you’ve been hanging out in the Forum or listening to the NLSC PodcastVl@d Zola Jr. and gregkwaste have both been doing some excellent work in developing tools to mod NBA 2K15. While we can’t do any work with the rosters, and sharing them outside of the game is still a no-go due to the way the roster files are encrypted, both tools are able to open the texture and audio files.

Please note that they are a work in progress, so please feel free to post constructive feedback and bug reports so that Vlad and Greg can resolve any issues. You can download the latest version of both tools here:

Additionally, Vlad has revealed that he applied for a job with 2K Sports, and is currently in negotiations. He’ll keep us informed as to the situation with RED MC for NBA 2K15 (as well as NBA 2K13 and NBA 2K14), but for now, I’d like to extend my congratulations to Vlad on the forthcoming gig, and thank him again for his hard work over the past few years.
