Monday Tip-Off: Fixing NBA 2K’s Grading Logic

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games.

Something that I’ve complained about on the Podcast, as well as in previous columns and most recently in this Forum thread, is the problematic nature of the grading logic in NBA 2K. Although there have been some subtle improvements in recent years, it’s extremely rare that I play a game of MyCAREER or 2K Pro-Am where I’m not hit with a deduction that leaves me grumbling, and wondering how the grading logic figures that I should be penalised. Even in situations where my grade should take a hit, there are deductions that seem needlessly harsh.

Of course, at a certain point you need to channel those complaints into something more constructive, namely suggestions and solutions. Since we’ve tipped off the NBA 2K18 Wishlist, it’s come time to start talking about some of the improvements and additions we want to see, and how we believe certain problems should be addressed. Since I’ve been playing a lot of 2K Pro-Am and MyCAREER in NBA 2K17, my issues with the grading logic sprang immediately when I was considering what I wanted to talk about this week. Without any further ado, here is an outline of how I feel the grading logic can be fixed in future NBA 2K releases.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #184

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #184 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane and I as we discuss Patch 1.05 for NBA 2K17, offer up some more thoughts on what might be happening with NBA Live 17, and talk about a couple of other topics from the past week.

On this week’s show…

  • We’ve started the ball rolling on our NBA 2K18 Wishlist, and encourage everyone to get involved in posting some constructive feedback for the development team.
  • Off the top of our heads, what are some of the main issues we’d like to see addressed in NBA 2K18?
  • Patch 1.05 has been released for NBA 2K17, addressing several bugs and tuning a few elements of the game. Some fixes are working better than others, but at least the timeout glitch is gone from 2K Pro-Am.
  • New rosters are also coming through for NBA 2K17 again, and a recent update has added Steve Nash back to the 2003 Mavericks and 2005 Suns.
  • What do we make of the radio silence from EA Sports regarding NBA Live 17? What do we think is going to happen with the game, and what are our expectations?
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: tough times and bratty kids in 2K Pro-Am, and a milestone achievement in MyCAREER.
  • We wrap up Episode #184 of the NLSC Podcast with some NBA talk, including Stephen Curry’s record-breaking thirteen three-pointers in a game, and Dwyane Wade’s first game against the Heat.

Latest NBA 2K17 Roster Features Steve Nash

Steve Nash dribbling the basketball in NBA 2K17

When NBA 2K17 was released, many gamers were disappointed to discover that Steve Nash was missing from the rosters of the 2003 Dallas Mavericks and 2005 Phoenix Suns. Since Nash’s inclusion in NBA 2K16 was still covered by the NBA Players Association license, it was speculated that his absence from NBA 2K17 was simply due to oversight, or an inability to work out a deal for his likeness rights before the rosters had to be finalised and approved by the NBA. It certainly wasn’t due to a lack of respect or knowledge on 2K’s part.

Fortunately, it seems that we won’t have to wait until next year to get the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player back in the game, as Steve Nash is included in the latest NBA 2K17 roster update. Nash appears on both the 2003 Mavericks and 2005 Suns, with appropriate ratings and bio data for each season. 2003 Nash is rated 86 Overall, while 2005 Nash is rated 93 Overall.

This isn’t the first time that 2K has managed to add a missing historical player through the official roster updates. Julius Erving was originally absent from NBA 2K14, but after coming to terms on a new deal, 2K were able to add him to the game. It remains to be seen whether any more missing historical players will be added in future updates, as there are still some noteworthy players absent from historical team rosters, including Rasheed Wallace.

As per Mike Wang over in the Operation Sports forums, the latest roster update also includes Adaptive Coaching Engine updates by Da_Czar and Scott O’Gallagher, and a decrease in injury frequency to lower body parts. Contract extensions have also been updated, along with some three-point tendencies and other player attributes.

See below for a couple of screenshots of Steve Nash on the 2003 Mavericks and 2005 Suns in NBA 2K17, and as always, feel free to have your say in the comments section!

Monday Tip-Off: How Danilo Gallinari Became My Least Favourite Teammate

Danilo Gallinari in a MyCAREER game in NBA 2K17

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games.

Playing through MyCAREER in NBA 2K17, I’ve learned a few things. One, never underestimate the importance of Badges; they really help give your player an extra boost. Two, when you’re a point guard playing for the Denver Nuggets and you’re looking to rack up a lot of assists, Justice Young and Kenneth Faried will happily oblige with baskets on catch-and-shoot and pick-and-roll opportunities respectively. And three, getting on the Italian cover of NBA 2K17 has clearly gone to Danilo Gallinari’s head…well, his virtual counterpart’s head, at any rate.

Halfway through my rookie season, the Nuggets are clearly the Orange Juice show. Yes, that still sounds a bit silly to say, but the point is, Justice and I have clearly taken over, and the team is thriving as a result. It seems that Danilo Gallinari didn’t get the memo though, because his play and attitude in practice and in games seems to suggest that he believes himself to be the star of the team. He still plays his role and he hasn’t cost us any games – yet, anyway – but there are times when it feels like he’s keen to impeach The President of Basketball. I have nothing against the real Gallo, but in MyCAREER, he’s become my least favourite teammate.

NBA 2K17 Roster Updated; Tuning Fix Pushed Through

Michael Carter-Williams on the Chicago Bulls' roster in NBA 2K17

Patch 1.05 for NBA 2K17 appears to have corrected the problem that was preventing the team from pushing through new rosters, as an update has come through following the patch’s release yesterday. This is the first roster update since mid-October, and updates the lineups accurate as of this week, including recent injuries.

A tuning update/fix has also been pushed through. Among other things, it notably resolves issues with the Relentless Finisher Badge, which should now be working as intended.

The new rosters, tuning fix, and Patch 1.05 are all live for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions of NBA 2K17. If you have any impressions of the latest updates, feel free to have your say in the comments section below, and join in the discussion here in the Forum.

NBA 2K17 Patch 1.05 Released (PC, PlayStation 4 & Xbox One)

NBA 2K17: DeMar DeRozan

Patch 1.05 has been pushed through for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions of NBA 2K17. It should come through automatically as long as your PC or console is connected to the Internet. If you encounter any difficulties getting the patch, trying restarting Steam or your console.

The patch adds HDR support for the PS4, and prepares NBA 2K17 to run at a native 4K resolution at 60 FPS on the PS4 Pro. It also updates the court design for the Cleveland Cavaliers, adds the Nate Thurmond tribute patch to the Golden State Warriors’ jerseys, and fixes some cosmetic issues with a few other uniforms.

Some key gameplay and game mode issues have also been addressed in Patch 1.05. The timeout glitch/exploit in 2K Pro-Am has been resolved, and teammates now have unique colours for their player indicators, reducing confusion. Points of Emphasis have returned to the Gameplan in MyGM and MyLEAGUE (only affecting simulated games), various crashes and glitches have been patched, and there are gameplay enhancements including correct illegal screen calls, balanced pass speeds, a reduction in “ticky tack” fouls, and more.

For a complete list of patch notes, please see below. With the release of Patch 1.05, we should also see new roster updates begin to come through again. If you’d like to share any impressions of the latest title update for NBA 2K17, feel free to post them in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum. Next NBA 2K17 Patch Coming Soon; 2K Pro-Am, Roster Fixes

NBA 2K17: Paul Millsap

According to the official NBA 2K Twitter account, a new patch is coming soon for NBA 2K17. It will reportedly address some issues with 2K Pro-Am, and correct the problem that is currently preventing new roster updates from being pushed through.

No further details on the fixes or the timeframe for the patch’s release are available at this time. So far, the PlayStation 4 has been the first platform to receive the updates, followed by the PC and Xbox One within a week or so. Your guess is as good as ours as to what is meant by “divergences”.

A quick glance at the rosters reveals that they haven’t been updated in a couple of weeks, as it seems that Patch 1.04 has caused an unforeseen issue with the ability to push through updates. 2K Pro-Am has experienced several issues since the game’s launch, from matchmaking difficulties to wins not counting. There’s also a nasty exploit in the form of a camera glitch when calling a timeout during free throws, which is even worse if you call a second timeout.

Hopefully these issues can be addressed in Patch 1.05, along with some of the other problems that gamers have been providing feedback about. We’ll be sure to post any further details as soon as they’re made available, but in the meantime, feel free to keep posting impressions and feedback in the NBA 2K17 section of the NLSC Forum.

The Friday Five: 5 Tips for Building Your MyPLAYER in NBA 2K17

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

I’ve really been enjoying MyCAREER and 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K17, as you probably know if you’ve read my last two Friday Five columns, or regularly tune in to the NLSC Podcast. With the less intrusive story and increased amount of gameplay in the first season compared to last year, I’ve been able to steadily build up my MyPLAYER and have some memorable games in my rookie campaign. As such, I thought that I’d share a few tips on how to build your MyPLAYER in NBA 2K17, based on my experiences with the game so far.

Now, I must disclose that I did invest in some Virtual Currency on Day 1 (on top of my pre-order bonus), so I have been able to accelerate the process somewhat. I certainly won’t encourage anyone to engage in microtransactions, though since you will need to keep the VC flowing in, I would recommend getting the MyNBA2K17 app and playing the daily games for extra VC. Aside from that, strong performances and endorsement deals will help build up your VC reserves. With that being said, here are five tips for building your MyPLAYER in NBA 2K17.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #182

Episode #182 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane, Kenny, and myself as we discuss opportunities for NBA Live 17, some more exciting victories in 2K Pro-Am, the start of the 2017 NBA season, and more.

On this week’s show…

  • It appears as though advertising is starting to appear after the third quarter in NBA 2K17. We discuss the controversial practice of in-game advertising in AAA titles.
  • Once again, we touch on the problems with an “always online” approach to modes such as MyCAREER, after a recent PSN outage made it impossible to play.
  • With some of the dissatisfaction gamers have with NBA 2K17 and the way 2K has handled things with VC and so forth, has the door been left open for NBA Live 17?
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: more clutch wins for the NLSC 2K Pro-Am squad, a blossoming rivalry, a trip to MyPARK, and the Walk-On experience.
  • The 2017 NBA season has tipped off! We talk about the first couple of days which saw a triple-double from LeBron James, a huge win for the San Antonio Spurs, big numbers from Anthony Davis, and the official debut of Joel Embiid.
