NLSC Podcast – Episode #135

NLSC Podcast Logo

We’re a little late this week, but Arcane and I weren’t about to let our digital broadcasting streak end so easily. As such, Episode #135 of the NLSC Podcast is out now; tune in for the latest discussion on NBA Live 16, NBA 2K16, the past week in the NBA, and a couple of other topics!

On this week’s show…

  • A new roster has come through for NBA Live 16, but the latest update still leaves something to be desired.
  • On the other hand, a huge patch has come through for NBA 2K16 on PS4. The PC and X1 patches are still on the way.
  • Speaking of the Xbox One, NBA Jam: On Fire Edition is on the newly announced list of backwards compatible games. We discuss the possibility of the game coming to PlayStation 4 as well.
  • If nothing else, forthcoming backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 2 might allow us to play NBA Street 1-3 on Sony’s latest console.
  • We’ve got a listener question this week: Would we consider buying a Steam machine?
  • Stephen Curry has passed his father in career threes, as he and the Golden State Warriors continue to have a fantastic start to the season. We discuss their success so far, and consider the comparisons to great teams and players from the past.
  • The Philadelphia 76ers, on the other hand, continue to lose. When will the tanking end?
  • Kevin McHale has been fired following the Houston Rockets’ slow start. We consider whether the move was fair, or made too early.
  • Speaking of coaches in the hot seat, George Karl is butting heads with DeMarcus Cousins and GM Vlade Divac. Do we think he’ll last the season?
  • We wrap up Episode #135 of the NLSC Podcast with some more interesting stats.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #134

NLSC Podcast Logo

Tune in to Episode #134 of the NLSC Podcast, hosted by Arcane and myself! This week we’re talking updates for NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16, some historically remarkable numbers for Andre Drummond, and a couple of other news items from the past week.

On this week’s show…

  • NBA Live 16 is in need of a major patch and content update. When do we think we might see it?
  • We look ahead to NBA Live 17 once again, and speculate on whether major updates for 16 might be shelved in favour of ensuring a much better game next year.
  • The third patch for NBA 2K16 should be coming soon. Mike Wang has posted some tidbits on what to expect over at Operation Sports.
  • Some gamers have discovered a couple of defensive settings (and possible oversight) in NBA 2K16 that make a huge difference to the way the CPU plays defense.
  • Moving on to the NBA discussion, Andre Drummond is doing something that hasn’t been done in almost 50 years. We know that Leftos has to be pleased.
  • LeBron James supports our campaign to put an end to sleeved jerseys! OK, not really, but it’s clear The King doesn’t care for them either.
  • Derrick Rose is slowly regaining his form, which one of us is particularly pleased to see. We discuss the recent rumours surrounding Rose, and whether he’s actually on the way out of Chicago.
  • The Miami Heat have made the first trade of the regular season, sending Mario Chalmers to the Memphis Grizzlies.
  • We end Episode #134 of the NLSC Podcast with a dubious statistic involving Nick Young and Kobe Bryant.

The Friday Five: 5 Questions after Week 1 of the 2016 NBA Season

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA, or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

While there’s still much to discuss on the NBA Live and NBA 2K front, I wanted to talk about some real basketball in this edition of The Friday Five, as we’re just over a week into the 2016 NBA season. There are some interesting stories developing through the first four to six games of the new season, and as a result, a few questions spring to mind. Since a few of them relate back to the predictions I made before the season tipped off, I thought I’d throw them out there, and perhaps make a few more predictions.

Now, it should be acknowledged that it’s still early days, with teams having between 76 and 78 games left to play in the regular season. What happens in November doesn’t always matter come April, or indeed, June. All the same, it’s interesting to take a look at the early trends and noteworthy statistics, and wonder about what’s going to happen next. As such, here are five questions I’d like to put out there after the first week (and a bit) of the 2016 NBA season.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #133

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #133 of the NLSC Podcast is out now, so tune in for your weekly fix of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and NBA discussion here at the NLSC! Arcane and I are your hosts as we discuss the latest NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16 news, and the first week of the 2016 NBA season.

On this week’s show…

  • New rosters are out for NBA Live 16, but we’re still waiting for proper, post-opening night 2016 season lineups.
  • We touch on last week’s discussion about NBA Live 16’s sales and what NBA Live 17 needs to do, and follow up with a correction.
  • Patch V2 is out now for NBA 2K16 PC. Some issues remain, but there’s a noticeable improvement in performance, and some welcome fixes.
  • NBA 2K16 modding saw a huge development this week with the release of the External File Plugin. Installing mods just got a whole lot easier.
  • 2K is banning PC gamers who hack their NBA 2K16 MyCAREER saves with the Cheat Engine. Fair or foul?
  • We wrap up this week’s video game discussion with some further MyCAREER talk.
  • Moving on to our NBA discussion, we recap the first week of the 2016 season, which has seen the Golden State Warriors dominate, Nate Robinson get cut after two games, and Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook achieve a milestone.
  • In a tale of two all-time greats, we reflect on Kobe Bryant’s continued struggles and decline, and LeBron James’ continued ascension up the all-time scoring charts.
  • It wouldn’t be an episode of the NLSC Podcast without some jersey discussion. This time, it’s the presence of the Kia logo on the All-Star jerseys.
  • We talk a little about how our favourite teams are doing, and the early struggles of the Houston Rockets.
  • Episode #133 of the NLSC Podcast ends with some Kevin Garnett trivia that probably makes him feel old. Kinda makes us feel old, too.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #132

NLSC Podcast Logo

It’s that time of the week again, as Arcane and I are coming at you with Episode #132 of the NLSC Podcast! We’ve got a lot to talk about this week including NBA Live 16 sales and the future of the NBA Live series, some exciting news for the NBA 2K16 modding community, opening night of the 2016 NBA season, and more.

On this week’s show…

  • NBA Live 16’s sales figures have been underwhelming. We discuss the reaction to the game so far, and the low number of sales following the optimism of the preview season.
  • What must EA Sports do with NBA Live 17 for the game to show sufficient improvement, and move the needle in sales?
  • We talk about a couple of things that were left on the cutting room floor for NBA Live 16. We also note the lack of an opening night roster update, and the presence of one for NBA 2K16.
  • There’s been another exciting development with NBA 2K16 modding, which we’re looking forward to seeing come to fruition. Hopefully, modding is even easier in NBA 2K17.
  • We pay our respects to the late Flip Saunders, who sadly lost his battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
  • The 2016 NBA season is underway, and it’s about time, too. We give our thoughts on the action from opening night.
  • Tristan Thompson has finally signed an extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Did they overpay for him?
  • We wrap up Episode #132 of the NLSC Podcast with a discussion of Nike’s fancy new shoe. It’s no hoverboard, but it’s still sufficiently futuristic for 2015!

2015-2016 NBA Season Tips Off Today

The wait is finally over! The 2015-2016 NBA season tips off today with three games: the Chicago Bulls host the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Atlanta Hawks host the Detroit Pistons, and the defending champion Golden State Warriors host the New Orleans Pelicans. You can catch all the action on TNT, Fox Sports, and of course, NBA League Pass/NBA League Pass Broadband. Be sure to check your local listings for more details.

With the NBA back in action, I’d just like to remind everyone that in addition to all the sections in the NLSC Forum dedicated to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and basketball gaming, we also have a long-running section for NBA & Basketball discussion, which you can find here. Be sure to join in the discussion with your fellow hoops fans all season long! We’re also giving our daily predictions game another try; if you’d like to get involved, you can find that thread here.

With a new NBA season tipping off, we’ll have plenty to talk about on the NLSC Podcast, so we invite you to tune in each week. You can also bet that we’ll be playing NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16 throughout the year, so stay tuned for more content for both games. Finally, ahead of today’s games, you might be interested in checking out some of the best opening night performances in league history. Will we see any of those records broken this season? In just a little while, we’ll find out.

Let the games begin!

The Friday Five: 5 Predictions for the 2016 NBA Season

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA, or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

Have you grown impatient waiting for the 2016 NBA season to begin? Fortunately, the wait is almost over, as we’re less than a week away from opening night! The NBA’s 70th season tips off on October 27th, with the Chicago Bulls hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers and the defending champion Golden State Warriors taking on the New Orleans Pelicans at the Oracle Arena. Another year of exciting basketball, dazzling highlights, and intriguing stories all around the league; if you’re a hoops fan, chances are you’re feeling pretty pumped right now.

With the offseason behind us and the pre-season drawing to a close, the time has come to start making some predictions about what’s going to happen in the NBA this year. Earlier this week, the GMs of all 30 teams chimed in with some of their predictions for the season, along with their ratings and rankings. Since this is the last Friday before the new season tips off, I thought I’d use this week’s Five to join in the fun, and offer up five predictions for the 2016 NBA season.

  • We’ve had another week to play NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16, with a couple of patches being pushed through. What’s our latest take on this year’s games?
  • Since we didn’t cover it last week, we also give our thoughts on the MyNBA2K16 app. If you need extra VC, it’s definitely worth picking up.
  • We talk about a recent retro basketball game purchase, and reminisce once again about the days when multiple companies released yearly hoops titles. Will we ever see that happen again?
  • Following up on one of last week’s big NBA stories, Lamar Odom is thankfully on the mend.
  • The 2016 NBA GM Survey is out on NBA.com. Are we the only ones who make terrible predictions?
  • We wrap up Episode #131 of the NLSC Podcast with a gem from NBA 2K16 that surely can’t be a coincidence.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #130

NLSC Podcast Logo

After a longer than expected hiatus, we’re back with Episode #130 of the NLSC Podcast! Illness and scheduling conflicts have once again gotten in the way as of late, but we’re back on the air, and looking forward to getting back into the habit of recording weekly shows, especially with the release of NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16.

On this week’s show…

  • We tip things off with our impressions of NBA Live 16. Is it the step up over NBA Live 15 that we were hoping it would be?
  • A couple of patches have already been released for NBA Live 16, so we have some impressions to share regarding a couple of the fixes.
  • NBA 2K16 has already sold four million copies, of which we own a couple. What do we make of this year’s offering from Visual Concepts?
  • We’ve been fairly critical of the story-driven approach to MyCAREER these past few years, but in NBA 2K16, it’s not all bad. Then again, it’s not all good, either…
  • Catching up on some community news, our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content will be resuming soon, alongside our continued NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16 coverage. NBA 2K16 PC modding has also tipped off with the release of gregkwaste’s NBA 2K16 Explorer.
  • Moving on to this week’s NBA discussion, we react to the terrible situation with Lamar Odom.
  • On a happier note, we look ahead to the 2016 season, and pick our shortlist of title contenders.
  • We wrap up Episode #130 of the NLSC Podcast with more NBA fashion critiques, and the impending anniversary of a league record.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #128

NLSC Podcast Logo

It’s back to our regularly scheduled programming this week, as Arcane and I host Episode #128 of the NLSC Podcast! An overview of this week’s show is as follows:

  • In case you missed it, last week was a big episode for the NLSC Podcast, as we welcomed Leftos and JaoSming back to the show to talk about NBA 2K16.
  • Our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content has tipped off, and we have a couple of other housekeeping announcements to make.
  • Catching up on all the NBA Live 16 news, we give our thoughts on the soundtrack, latest ratings reveals, and screenshots. Are we hyped for NBA Live 16?
  • We recap a huge amount of NBA 2K16 news, including a new trailer, and several in-depth developer blogs. Has it moved the needle on our excitement for NBA 2K16?
  • New content for NBA Live 15 and NBA 2K15 is slowing to a halt, and we’re finding that we’re just about ready to move on. Still, we have been spending some time with last year’s games as of late.
  • The Atlanta Hawks are retiring Dikembe Mutombo’s #55, so we reflect on some of our favourite Mutombo Moments.
  • J.R. Smith has officially re-signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers; Tristan Thompson has not. Once again, we reflect on the Cavs’ chances this year.
  • What do we think of Mickey Arison’s proposed Miami Vice/South Beach alternates for the Miami Heat?
  • We end Episode #128 of the NLSC Podcast with an All-Time Lineup game.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #125

NLSC Podcast Logo

We’re back…again! And with any luck, there won’t be any further interruptions for some time. Tune in to Episode #125 of the NLSC Podcast, where Arcane and I discuss the latest NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16 news and previews, a couple of recent events in the NBA, and my trip to the EA Tiburon studio in Orlando back in July.

On this week’s show…

  • Andrew tips off the show with some thanks for the key folks who got him to Orlando to take part in the NBA Live 16 community event back in July. Lots of impressions and information coming, once clearance is granted!
  • One aspect of NBA Live 16 that can be discussed at this time is the recently announced LIVE Pro-Am. Andrew follows up on his hands-on impressions with further thoughts, while Arcane has some hands-off impressions.
  • A few screenshots and quick video clips have also been released, in addition to the trailer for LIVE Pro-Am. We talk about how well NBA Live 16 is shaping up, visually speaking.
  • On a less positive note, we react to the absence of custom rosters and roster editing in NBA Live 16. Might it be patched in?
  • 2K has also announced Pro-Am for NBA 2K16. We give our thoughts on 2K’s take on the concept, and the unfortunate situation of both modes having the same name.
  • We’ve also had a glimpse of NBA 2K16 by way of some video clips on social media, screenshots, and the digital shorts narrated by Spike Lee.
  • What do we make of the criticism that NBA 2K16’s graphics haven’t shown enough improvement?
  • We discuss the latest retro teams to be announced for NBA 2K16, and make a couple of predictions as to which teams might be announced next.
  • Speaking of retro basketball, Andrew has picked up a few more old school games. This leads to a comparison of collections.
  • This week’s NBA discussion includes a few more thoughts on the new jersey designs, Tristan Thompson’s continued free agency, and some very bad news for Dante Exum.
  • We wrap up Episode #125 of the NLSC Podcast with a bold prediction from Charles Barkley.

The Friday Five: 5 Retro Teams We’re Unlikely To See In NBA 2K16

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

As you may have seen in this bulletin, or elsewhere on the Internet, one of the NBA 2K16 tidbits to come out of Gamescom 2015 is the inclusion of 12 new retro teams in this year’s game. To date, we know five of the new historical squads that have been added in NBA 2K16: the 2000 Portland Trail Blazers, 2000 Toronto Raptors, 2001 Los Angeles Lakers, 2003 Dallas Mavericks, and 2008 Boston Celtics. Over the next few Thursdays, we’ll be finding out the remaining seven retro teams that are yet to be announced.

I’m sure that we all have our own ideas about which teams we’d like to see make the cut, but a thought occurred to me today: What are some of the teams that we really don’t need to see join the ranks of historical squads in NBA 2K16? So, just for fun, let’s take a look at five teams from seasons gone by that we’re highly unlikely to see appear in NBA 2K16.

  • Player movement is slowing down, but there’s still some interesting signings worth talking about, including Josh Smith joining the Los Angeles Clippers.
