NBA 2K14 Will Be Released on PC

Finally, some big news coming from 2K today! All kidding aside, it seems that retailer pre-order listings of an NBA 2K14 PC version were validated with the announcement of LeBron James being on the cover today. While tonight’s Joystiq article links to official PC boxart, Kotaku specifically mentions the PC version, saying;

James will grace a packshot (full size at the end of this article) appearing on five different platforms—the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, arriving on the traditional first-Tuesday-in-October date of Oct. 1; and on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 when those new consoles arrive.

Since the PC version is grouped in with the PS3 and Xbox 360, it is safe to assume the PC will see a port of the current generation game, rather than a next generation port. Furthermore, the pre-order trailer only mentioning the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 implies that the PC will once again miss out on the VC currency system that was advertised.

Once more information is released, we’ll be sure to report it here. For now, check out the NBA 2K14 Forums and give your celebratory thoughts in the comments below.

Nice! At least the modding community won’t die out for at least a year. Hopefully, it won’t for a few centuries. 😉

Fantastic news. It’ll be an afterthought and the lack of Virtual Currency probably means more grinding in MyCAREER, but it’s far preferable to no PC release at all.

What is virtual currency?

Virtual Currency (or VC) is in-game currency that was in the console versions of NBA 2K13. You could elect to earn VC instead of Skill Points in MyCAREER, as well as earn it through playing other modes or performing tasks in the Facebook game (NBA 2K: MyLIFE) or the MyNBA2K Android/iOS app. If you were tired of grinding to level up your player, you could also elect to purchase booster packs through Xbox Live or the PlayStation Store, spending real dollars for in-game ones.

Of course, you don’t have to spend a single cent if you don’t want to and you can level up your player without VC at all. It does take a little longer though, since MyCAREER was designed to make use of VC. Even if you’re not buying booster packs, you can get boosts by using the free app and Facebook game. As such, the amount of Skill Points you receive to develop your player isn’t always very fair, which again means more grinding to level up. When it comes to the PC version, that’s the only option.
