It’s been a while since we updated our site poll, so today we’re posing a new question: How important is it to you that basketball video games feature historical content? Cast your vote now and feel free to post your thoughts on the matter in the comments below.
Our previous poll asked Are you getting a next gen console? Perhaps not surprisingly given our history as a PC modding community, 55% of voters indicated that they’d be sticking with the PC, at least for now. As far as the consoles are concerned, it seems that the PlayStation 4 is the most popular choice in our community as it garnered 26% of the vote, compared to only 8% for Xbox One. A further 3% of voters indicated that they would be getting both consoles, while a final 8% were undecided.
Vital. Of the 4 major US sports, I think basketball and baseball are the only two that really need to have historical content in video games. Too many what ifs, and unlike hockey or football, the game hasn’t change too too much over the years.
Of the Big Four, I’d say that basketball has the most worldwide appeal as well, so the greats of the past are probably better known to international fans. They also have the smallest rosters, so there aren’t as many players to secure likeness rights for and if generics have to be used to round out rosters, there needn’t be too many of them.
I also voted for vital, and I agree with JaoSming.
My only gripe is to have these historical teams to have less flashy moves.
Agreed. Some more era-specific moves would be a nice touch.
I bought a wrestling game for the first time in 10 years solely because they put in all the classic wrestlers. I haven’t watched wrestling since it was still the WWF, I don’t know who half the current wrestlers are but I love the game. I even shelled out an extra 20 bucks for historical DLC.
It just goes to show that there is a lot of value in nostalgia. I really enjoyed that stuff in WWE 2K14 as well.
its very vital…i really wish they can put all the championship teams and make a mod in it.. name it like “champion of champions ” XD
2K certainly came close with the Michael Jordan content in NBA 2K11 and NBA’s Greatest in NBA 2K12, content that they’ve carried over to the past couple of games as well. Likeness rights are always going to be an issue though; we’ll probably never see complete teams or every single championship team, simply due to the difficulty of securing all the necessary likeness rights. However, 2K should be commended for the job they’ve done with the historical content in recent games.
yup i agree… NBA’s Greatest in NBA 2K12 was the best..and likeness rights has been the problem keeping 2k from a making it complete
