The Friday Five: 5 Silly Things I’ve Done in Basketball Games

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA, or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

When it comes to basketball games, I like to think of myself as a member of Sim Nation…shout out to Da_Czar. Although some of the improvements to basketball games in recent years have challenged my perception of how realistically I play, and what realism truly means, on the whole I would say that I do indeed prefer a true to life style of play, and want to see NBA Live and NBA 2K reflect the real NBA as closely as possible. Of course, I also believe there’s a need for more casual, or “arcade style” gameplay settings, too.

I also have to admit that my approach to basketball games hasn’t always been so sim. When I first started playing NBA Live 95 on Super Nintendo, my approach was definitely more casual, and less focused on realism. However, even after I took an interest in playing basketball games more realistically, I’d occasionally take a break from that style, in the name of doing something fun. Not that I don’t consider playing realistically to be fun, but sometimes, a break from the norm and a bit of silliness is refreshing. And, as you’ll soon find out, I’ve done some quite silly things with basketball games from time to time.

Hotfixes Released for NBA 2K16 PC

NBA 2K16: Stephen Curry

For those who may be unaware, a couple of hotfixes have been pushed through for the PC version of NBA 2K16. If the latest update hasn’t come through for you, be sure to restart your Steam client.

There aren’t any detailed patch notes at this time, but the hotfixes are intended to address some of the performance issues (such as stuttering and low framerates) that gamers have been experiencing with NBA 2K16 PC. As per Leftos’ post, the development team is working on a fix for issues with commentary disappearing, but it wasn’t quite ready to include in the most recent hotfix.

As he was last year, Leftos has been quite active in the NBA 2K16 section of the NLSC Forum, collecting feedback from PC gamers including crash reports. If you’re having problems with NBA 2K16 crashing, be sure to follow the instructions in this thread, and post your crash report for analysis.

Leftos has also mentioned that the development team is indeed keeping track of the general NBA 2K16 bug reports across all platforms. While there’s no ETA at this time, a cross-platform patch that addresses those issues will be released at some point in the near future. In the meantime, we are invited to continue posting any and all bug reports and constructive feedback regarding NBA 2K16, so be sure to post about any issues you’re having.

File Additions for NBA Live 06

We have some new file additions for NBA Live 06 PC today, as yunicorn has uploaded some fantastic jersey updates for the 2016 season. As I’ve mentioned in some of our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content thus far, NBA Live 06 PC is my all-time favourite game in the NBA Live series (and is obviously celebrating its 10th anniversary this year), so it’s great to see some updates coming out for it. If you’re in the mood to play some NBA Live 06 with current jerseys, be sure to download all of the latest releases at the links below!

Monday Tip-Off: Fanboys, Haters, and the Basketball Gaming Community

Fanboys, Haters, and the Basketball Gaming Community

We’re at midcourt, the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Get your week started here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to basketball video games.

In last week’s Friday Five, I talked about aspects of online culture that I dislike. While I’d rather not spend too much time dwelling on the negative – incidentally, that would be another pet peeve of mine when it comes to online culture – I did touch on something that I’d like to talk a little bit more about today for Monday Tip-Off: fanboys and haters within the basketball gaming community.

I don’t want to make a sweeping, generalised, melodramatic statement such as “Fanboys and haters are ruining the basketball gaming community”, because that’s not exactly true. Unfortunately, such a statement isn’t completely without merit, either. At the very least, it’s reaching some incredibly silly levels, with severe tunnel vision and an almost complete lack of perspective. Granted, this is often the case in any fandom, but since this is our community we’re talking about, I’d like to see us do better.

D-League Digest Interview with JAWSFreelao

D-League Mod for NBA 2K14 PC

D-League Digest recently conducted an interview with NLSC Forum member JAWSFreelao, who has been working on a D-League mod for NBA 2K14 PC. The interview discusses his enthusiasm for and interest in the D-League, noting that he relates to the players’ struggle in striving for success and working their way up to the big time. He also discusses some of the recent challenges that the community has faced in developing mods for NBA 2K15 (and now NBA 2K16), and his favourite D-League team, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Several screenshots of the D-League mod can also be found in the article.

It’s always awesome when the hard work of one of our members gets recognition outside of our community, and fantastic modding efforts are given the spotlight. Hats off to Nathan for scoring the interview, and my thanks for the kind words about the NLSC. The contributions of our talented modding community are always greatly appreciated!

Incidentally, if you’d like to see the latest previews of the D-League mod, or lend a hand in its creation, be sure to check out this thread and let Nathan know ASAP. If you’re a modder whose work is spotlighted elsewhere on the Internet, be sure to let us know!

The Friday Five: 5 Aspects of Online Culture I Dislike

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16 are in stores now, and to that end, it would make sense to discuss one or both of them in this week’s Friday Five. However, I’d like to spend a bit more time with both games before I offer up any impressions, and discuss certain elements of them in detail. Furthermore, this week’s topic – five aspects of online culture that I dislike – is one that I’ve been meaning to talk about for a while. The timing isn’t completely inappropriate either, as we see a lot of this stuff pop up whenever new games are released.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I maintain that we have a good thing going here at the NLSC, and I do like being a part of an online community. I also believe that the World Wide Web in general is a fantastic invention that continues to innovate, and it’s done a lot to make video games a bigger business, and an even more enjoyable hobby. However, there are some negative traits that permeate online culture, especially in gaming communities. When it comes to the five things I’m about to discuss, I think we need to either grow up, or get over ourselves…or maybe both.

Monday Tip-Off: Lost Forever – The Missing Trophies & Achievements

We’re at midcourt, the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Get your week started here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to basketball video games.

For some gamers, Trophies and Achievements in video games are of great importance. For the gamer who strives for 100% completion, there are few things as satisfying as the sight and sound of a notification informing them that a Trophy or Achievement has just been unlocked. It’s a concise representation that yes, you did indeed do just about everything you could with a game, and then some. And, if you’re the kind of gamer who likes to brag about such things, it’s right there in your public profile, for everyone to see.

For other gamers, Trophies and Achievements are nothing but a nuisance, a meaningless aspect of modern games that are only useful to people who want to brag about ultimately useless accomplishments. You play the games because you’re interested in them, not to get some virtual pat on the back for performing some mundane task. Simply put, Trophies and Achievements aren’t something that everyone is interested in, or obsesses over.

Personally, I find myself somewhere in the middle. I’m not obsessed with collecting every single Trophy or Achievement in every game I play, but I also find them to be fun goals to shoot for, when I’m looking to extend my gaming experience. Basketball video games have had some fun and interesting challenges in the form of their Trophies and Achievements, but in some cases, shooting for 100% completion becomes impossible sooner than you might expect. Servers are inevitably shut down at some point, at which point Achievements involving online play or timed content become lost forever.

NBA Live 16 Ultimate Team: Launch Legends

NBA Live 16 Ultimate Team Launch Legends

EA Sports has posted a preview of the Legends that will be available in Ultimate Team at the launch of NBA Live 16. The article confirms 43 NBA Legends, spotlighting Dee Brown, Darryl Dawkins, Dave Bing, World B. Free, Robert Horry, Shawn Kemp, Chris Mullin, Charles Oakley, Vlade Divac, and Manute Bol.

For those who may be concerned that that’s a small roster of Legends, I can confirm that there are more former players than that available to collect in NBA Live 16. I’m not allowed to name them all at this time, but at the NBA Live 16 community event that I attended, I did take a look at the debug pack containing all of the Legends, and there are indeed more than the 43 that have been revealed so far. Needless to say, I should be able to put together a decent 90s team once again this year.

See below for the list of the 43 Legends that have been confirmed for NBA Live 16 Ultimate Team so far, and feel free to share any thoughts you might have in the comments, as well as in this thread in the Forum.
