The Friday Five: 5 Retro Teams We’re Unlikely To See In NBA 2K16

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

As you may have seen in this bulletin, or elsewhere on the Internet, one of the NBA 2K16 tidbits to come out of Gamescom 2015 is the inclusion of 12 new retro teams in this year’s game. To date, we know five of the new historical squads that have been added in NBA 2K16: the 2000 Portland Trail Blazers, 2000 Toronto Raptors, 2001 Los Angeles Lakers, 2003 Dallas Mavericks, and 2008 Boston Celtics. Over the next few Thursdays, we’ll be finding out the remaining seven retro teams that are yet to be announced.

I’m sure that we all have our own ideas about which teams we’d like to see make the cut, but a thought occurred to me today: What are some of the teams that we really don’t need to see join the ranks of historical squads in NBA 2K16? So, just for fun, let’s take a look at five teams from seasons gone by that we’re highly unlikely to see appear in NBA 2K16.

NBA Live 16 Start Screen Video

While we’re still waiting for EA Sports to unveil the new online mode at Gamescom 2015, they’ve uploaded a video of the game’s start screen, featuring Russell Westbrook.

Check it out on the official NBA Live Twitter or Facebook if you can’t see the embedded Tweet above. As always, I invite you to share any thoughts and speculation in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion in our NBA Live 16 Forum.

’03 Mavericks & ’00 Trail Blazers in NBA 2K16

One of the NBA 2K16 tidbits that’s come out of Gamescom 2015 is the inclusion of 12 new retro teams in this year’s game. The 2000 Toronto Raptors, 2001 Los Angeles Lakers, and 2008 Boston Celtics have previously been revealed, and it’s been revealed today on the official NBA 2K Twitter and Facebook pages that they’ll be joined by the 2000 Portland Trail Blazers and 2003 Dallas Mavericks.

As per the Tweet and Facebook posts, the next few Thursdays will reveal more of the new historical teams that will be featured in NBA 2K16.

What do you think of the inclusion of these two retro teams in NBA 2K16? Which other teams are you hoping to see? Have your say in the comments below, and as always, feel free to take the discussion to the NBA 2K16 section of the Forum.

NBA Live 16 Screenshots Featuring Raptors’ New Jerseys

Following the reveal of the Toronto Raptors’ new jerseys with the first official NBA 2K16 screenshots, EA Sports has now posted some NBA Live 16 screenshots spotlighting the team’s newly unveiled uniforms.

The first screenshot features DeMar DeRozan sporting the new black and gold alternate jersey, while the second spotlights all four jerseys that the Raptors will debut this season, as worn by DeRozan, Kyle Lowry, DeMarre Carroll, and Terrence Ross. You can check them both out below, as well as in our NBA Live 16 screenshots gallery.

In other NBA Live 16 news, the game was not featured during EA Sports’ presentation at Gamescom yestersday, despite previous reports that the new online mode would be announced during the event. Of course, the event is not yet over, so those details could very well still be forthcoming.

In the meantime however, what’s your take on the latest NBA Live 16 screenshots, and the Toronto Raptors’ new jerseys? Have your say in the comments below, and as always, feel free to join in the discussion in the NBA Live 16 section of the NLSC Forum!

Jeff Thomas Talks Pro-Am in NBA 2K16 (Operation Sports)

Jeff Thomas, vice president of sports development as Visual Concepts, recently chatted with Operation Sports about the new Pro-Am mode in NBA 2K16. Several questions could not be answered at this time due to details on other modes remaining unannounced, but nevertheless, the quick interview provided some good information on what to expect from Pro-Am in NBA 2K16. Some of the key points are as follows:

  • Custom arenas are for team play exclusively, while the four court Pro-Am arena is for walk-on play.
  • Only the team owner can manage team designs and customisation.
  • Users can be part of multiple squads.
  • Pro-Am is playable with three human users and two CPU-controlled teammates, if you don’t have five users available.
  • There are no position restrictions.

Be sure to check out the interview over at Operation Sports for the full scoop! What are your thoughts on Pro-Am so far? Sound off in the comments section below, and join in the discussion in our NBA 2K16 Forum!

Details on 2K Pro-Am Revealed for NBA 2K16

2K has revealed details on the new Pro-Am mode in NBA 2K16. The mode allows you to take your MyPLAYER, create an online team with full customisation (courts, jerseys, logos), and compete in five-on-five matches with NBA rules. Pro-Am will also feature instant matchmaking, so there’ll be no “Got Next” approach to jumping into a game, as in MyPARK.

Pro-Am will feature daily, monthly, and overall leaderboards, complete with league leaders, power rankings, and so on. 2K has released a trailer spotlighting the new mode, which you watch below; alternatively, check it out here on YouTube if you can’t see the embedded video.

The Friday Five: 5 Basketball Video Game Surprises

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

If you’re relatively new to basketball video games, or at least the basketball gaming community, you may not have much of an idea of how things used to be when it came to previews and interactions with the developers. With all the tidbits on social media, developer blogs, in-depth interviews here at the NLSC and around the web, live streams, and so on these days, we get to learn a lot about the upcoming editions of NBA Live and NBA 2K before they come out. This allows us to be well-informed, and in turn, savvy consumers.

Of course, the downside of such in-depth coverage is that some of the mystery is taken out of basketball gaming. That’s not necessarily a bad thing – with games coming out every year, we want to know whether the latest iteration is worth spending money on – but it also means that we don’t often get to be surprised by something really cool in basketball video games. Every so often though, EA Sports or 2K Sports will announce something that catches us off guard, and that’s what I’m talking about today: five times that I was surprised by basketball video games. Let’s get to the Five!
