The Friday Five: Michael Jordan In Basketball Video Games

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

This week marked the 20th Anniversary of Michael Jordan’s first comeback, one of the most significant events for basketball fans like myself who grew up watching the NBA in the 90s. There was no hour long special, no social media and thus no hashtags, and no lengthy speeches. No, His Airness’ return to the hardwood was simply announced in two words: “I’m Back”.

Michael Jordan’s history with basketball video games is kind of interesting to look back upon, as it’s a situation that must seem very foreign to younger gamers. The idea that the league’s best player and one of its marquee attractions would not be featured in an NBA licensed game is quite unusual, and thankfully no longer an issue we have to deal with. So, in honour of a milestone that makes me feel old, and in the interest of indulging my nostalgia for both Michael Jordan and basketball video games, this week’s Friday Five is taking a look back at MJ’s presence on the virtual hardwood.

Suns.com Retrospectives: NBA Live 95 & NBA Live 95 vs. NBA Jam

The official website of the Phoenix Suns has posted a retrospective of NBA Live 95, with author Ben York remembering it fondly as “the greatest basketball video game of all-time”. He talks about playing the Super Nintendo version of the game with his brother for hours upon hours from May to August 1995, and discusses just how impressive NBA Live 95 was for its time; an assessment that I for one certainly agree with.

In another piece, York debates Greg Esposito as to which 90s basketball game was better: the sim-oriented NBA Live 95, or the arcade-oriented NBA Jam. For those who of us who remember playing both games back in the day, it’s a fun trip down memory lane. For younger basketball gamers, it will hopefully prove to be an interesting look back at a time when basketball games really started to improve.

I highly recommend checking out both retrospectives when you have a moment; feel free to add your thoughts in the comments below, and join in the discussion in the NBA Live Vintage section of the NLSC Forum. Don’t forget that we’re also preparing our own 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content, in which I and other members of the NLSC Team will be giving our thoughts on the past, present, and future of the NBA Live series, as well as providing a few other surprises that you’ll hopefully enjoy.

Ultimate Jordan Roster Raw Demo for NBA Live 08

As I prepare content for our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live celebrations, I’m looking at creating a few different projects for the PC versions of NBA Live that I’ve long wanted to do, but never gotten around to doing. For the larger releases, I’m looking at releasing “demo” versions, which can be updated gradually as I have time to work on them and acquire the necessary art assets.

My latest project is an Ultimate Jordan Roster (name subject to change) for NBA Live 08, which I’d also be looking to convert for use with NBA Live 2005, NBA Live 06, and NBA Live 07. It contains historical teams celebrating Michael Jordan’s career (1984-2003): 15 of MJ’s teams and 15 selected opponents, one for each season he played in the NBA.

As with the Fictional Basketball League, this is something that I’ll be working on whenever I’m able to, so I’m not setting any release date. If a few people from the community would like to get involved, contributions of historical team/player art and the like would be very much appreciated!

In the meantime, you can download the very bare-bones raw demo here. If you have any comments, feel free to leave them below, or post them in my release thread.

Details on the March 18th Roster Update for NBA Live 15

A new roster update has come through for NBA Live 15 which contains more than 3800 ratings changes, as well as accessory updates for 24 players. For a complete overview of all the changes that have been made in the March 18th roster, check out this spreadsheet.

Anthony Davis and cover player Damian Lillard are two of the players who have been spotlighted in the latest roster. The Brow’s continued brilliance, including his 36 points, 14 rebounds, nine blocks and seven assists against the Denver Nuggets, have seen him rise to a 92 overall. Damian Lillard meanwhile now sits at 89 overall.

As always, please feel free to post any thoughts on the rosters in the comments section below, as well as in this thread in our NBA Live 15 Forum.

Glen Rice, World B. Free, Chuck Person Added to NBA Live 15 Ultimate Team

The latest additions to the ranks of Legends in NBA Live 15 Ultimate Team are a trio of scorers: Glen Rice, World B. Free, and Chuck Person. All three players will be randomly available in packs this weekend, and can be faced in a new Fantasy Challenge.

WORLD B FREE, 76ERS/CLIPPERS/WARRIORS/CAVS/ROCKETS G
Free’s nickname was inspired by his massive vertical leap and athleticism. He was an All-Star in 1980 and averaged more than 20 PPG in his career.

GLEN RICE, HEAT/HORNETS/LAKERS/KNICKS/ROCKETS/CLIPPERS F
The three-time All-Star was one of the league’s best shooters, and was a member of the dominant 1999-2000 Lakers team that won the NBA title.

CHUCK PERSON, PACERS/TIMBERWOLVES/SPURS/HORNETS/SONICS G
The 1987 NBA Rookie of the Year averaged nearly 15 PPG in his career.

Remember that you can discuss anything and everything about Ultimate Team here in the NBA Live 15 section of the Forum.

The Friday Five: My 5 Favourite Number 13s

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

Another Friday the 13th is upon us, and since I’ve already covered unlucky moments in a previous Friday Five, this time I thought I’d mark the occasion by listing my five favourite NBA players who have worn number thirteen. I’m sure a couple of those players will come as no surprise for anyone who knows my nationality and favourite NBA team, but a couple of my other picks may be somewhat unexpected.

Despite its reputation as an unlucky number in Western superstition, a total of 169 NBA players have worn the number thirteen jersey. Four of those players have been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, including of course the great Wilt Chamberlain. Without any further ado, here are my five favourite NBA players to have worn number thirteen.

Patch #4 for NBA 2K15 Released on PC & PS4

The fourth official patch for NBA 2K15 has been pushed through for the PC and PlayStation 4 versions of the game. It has not come through yet on Xbox One and no timetable is currently available, though Ronnie 2K previously indicated that the patch would be coming out on all platforms within 14 days, but “probably much sooner”.

Full patch notes are yet to come, but it has been noted that the latest patch addresses various issues with shoes, primarily occurring in MyCAREER. As soon as more information is made available, we’ll be sure to post it.

The PC patch is around 92.2 MB in size, while the PlayStation 4 patch checks in at 2.84 GB. If you have feedback on the patch, feel free to post it in the comments below, as well as in this thread in the NBA 2K15 section of the NLSC Forum.
