Monday Tip-Off: A Tale of Two Franchise Games

Chicago Bulls Dynasty in NBA Live 16

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Get your week started here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to basketball video games.

In the last couple of episodes of the NLSC Podcast, Arcane and I have gotten back to discussing what we’re doing with basketball video games each week, be it NBA Live 16, NBA 2K16, or both. If you’ve listened to Episode #145, you may recall that I mentioned that I’ve started both a Dynasty game in NBA Live 16, and a MyLEAGUE game in NBA 2K16. In each game’s franchise mode, I’ve elected to take control of the Chicago Bulls, and make one offseason move: signing Ben Gordon.

On the surface, the more logical course of action would seem to be opting for completely different experiences in each game’s franchise mode. However, I thought that it would be interesting to see how the same approach would play out in each game, and how the results of each franchise game would ultimately compare to one another. Aside from differences in gameplay, MyLEAGUE is also a much deeper mode than Dynasty, which is likely to be a big factor in changing up the experience.

So, as I look to tip off both franchise games, what are my expectations?

NBA Live 16 All-Star Weekend Roster Update & Ultimate Team Content

NBA Live 16: All-Star LeBron James vs. Kobe Bryant

In addition to a new title update which includes the 2016 All-Star court and jerseys, NBA Live 16 has received another new roster update. As mentioned in the previous post, the rosters for the East and West All-Stars have been updated, including Pau Gasol replacing Jimmy Butler. Chris Bosh’s last minute scratch will obviously have to wait until next week’s roster update at the earliest.

Five players on the way up in this week’s roster are Kyrie Irving (+3 to 87), Aaron Gordon (+4 to 80), Kyle Lowry (+4 to 87), John Wall (+3 to 90), and Gordon Hayward (+2 to 82). Conversely, five players on the way down this week are Jusuf Nurkic (-3 to 76), Andre Drummond (-2 to 88), Tony Parker (-2 to 84), Chris Bosh (-2 to 85), and Channing Frye (-2 to 74). Eleven active players are currently rated 90+ overall, headed up by Stephen Curry at 96 overall. The roster also includes recent player movement, and 45 accessory updates; check out this spreadsheet for more details.

NBA Live 16 has also received new All-Star Weekend content in Ultimate Team: over 50 new player cards (including boosted versions of the All-Star participants), 12 Solo Challenges, and one new Master Challenge. All the latest content will be there once you fire up the game, so if you’re playing a little NBA Live 16 over the All-Star Weekend, feel free to discuss your experiences in the comments below, as well as in the NBA Live 16 section of the NLSC Forum.

2016 All-Star Weekend Logo Updates for NBA Live 2005-08

2016 All-Star Weekend Logo Update for NBA Live 08

Since there are still gamers playing NBA Live 2005, NBA Live 06, NBA Live 07, NBA Live 08, and a handful of people still making some great updates for those games, I thought I’d whip up some quick logo updates for the All-Star Weekend. These updates add the logo for the 2016 NBA All-Star Weekend in Toronto to the menus and in-game overlays for all four games. Download them at the links below!

Make sure that you download the correct patch for the game you’re playing.

The Friday Five: Revisiting My Predictions for the 2016 NBA Season

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA, or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

With the All-Star Weekend upon us, we’re essentially at the midway point of the 2016 NBA season. Normally I discuss a topic related to the NBA’s midseason classic in the Five that precedes the All-Star Weekend, but this year, I wanted to do something a little different. This time, I wanted to look back at some predictions I made at the start of the season, and see how I’m faring so far. If you’re a regular listener of the NLSC Podcast, you know how well my NBA predictions generally turn out!

That said, I’m actually not doing too badly. While there’s still quite a few games left to play, several weeks during which time a lot of things can change, a couple of my predictions aren’t too wide of the mark. One has turned out to be a jinx, and two are looking quite precarious, but the other two stand a good chance of being correct. So, without any further ado, let’s revisit the five predictions I made for the 2016 NBA season, and see how each of them are looking at the halfway mark.

NBA Live 16 Update v1.06 Released

NBA Live 16: All-Star Court in Toronto

A new title update (v1.06) for NBA Live 16 has come through on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The patch updates the game for the 2016 All-Star Weekend, adds new content for BIG Moments, and includes a few fixes. Per the update history on PlayStation 4, a quick overview of the patch is as follows:

  • New All-Star court and jerseys
  • New Live Season content
  • Bug and stability fixes

The blog on the official website also mentions that the patch includes various improvements to presentation and online head-to-head play. From the looks of things, there are some new player face scans in the game, as New York Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingas now has a proper face.

A new roster update has also come through for NBA Live 16 today. The latest roster includes updated All-Star lineups, right down to Pau Gasol replacing the injured Jimmy Butler on the East All-Stars. Notably, a couple of recent coaching changes are also reflected, as Tyronn Lue is coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers (and the East All-Stars), and J.B. Bickerstaff is now coaching the Houston Rockets. Jeff Hornacek, Derek Fisher, and Lionel Hollins are yet to be replaced.

Feel free to add your thoughts on the latest NBA Live 16 patch in the comments section, as well as in this thread in the Forum. Also see below for some screenshots of the new All-Star court and jerseys in-game, and don’t forget to join us in compiling this year’s Wishlist for NBA Live 17.

NBA Live 17 Wishlist Thread Open; Submit Your Feedback!

Dwyane Wade with the basketball in NBA Live 16

Wishlist season is tipping off, and it’s time to start putting together our feedback for the NBA Live Development Team. As such, I’ve created our official NBA Live 17 Wishlist thread, which you can find here in the NLSC Forum. That’s the place to post suggestions as to what you want to see improve in NBA Live 17, as well as features that you want to see added to the game. Lists of bugs that ultimately weren’t resolved in the NBA Live 16 title updates are also most welcome.

While no one should feel they have to sugar-coat, suck up, or otherwise be less than honest in their feedback, we also ask that everyone remains civil and constructive. Being abusive, needlessly nasty or snarky, or otherwise childish isn’t helpful, and those sorts of posts aren’t welcome in the NBA Live 17 Wishlist thread. If you want to vent about the game, the NBA Live series, or whatever, please find or create another thread. We want to keep the Wishlist threads constructive and on-topic.

Apart from that, be sure to give details where necessary. Saying things like “make the gameplay better” or “better Dynasty Mode” isn’t useful, as it doesn’t tell the developers how gameplay needs to get better, or what you want to see in Dynasty Mode. The same goes for any other aspect of the game that you want to provide feedback on.

In case you missed the link above, you can find the NBA Live 17 Wishlist here in the Forum. I’ve also included a few notes in the first post about the best way to provide feedback. As mentioned, we’ll most likely compile a “Top Wishes” list once the Wishlist really gets rolling, and we have an idea of the most desired improvements and additions. That’s about it, so start posting your feedback ASAP! If you need some inspiration, I’d recommend checking out this excellent article by cdj over on The Gaming Tailgate.

NBA 2K17 Wishlist Thread Open; Submit Your Feedback!

Stephen Curry with the three-pointer in NBA 2K16

The time has come for us to start compiling an official Wishlist for NBA 2K17, so I’ve set up a thread in the NLSC Forum to do just that. If you’ve got any constructive feedback that you’d like to submit to the NBA 2K Development Team, be sure to start posting it ASAP. Whether it’s reports of bugs that weren’t resolved in the NBA 2K16 title updates, suggestions for gameplay enhancements, or features that you’d like to see added or improved, it’s all useful and welcome in the Wishlist.

As always, we ask that you remain constructive when posting your feedback. That doesn’t mean sugar-coating negative feedback or sucking up; it just means not being abusive, needlessly snarky, or otherwise childish. The NBA 2K17 Wishlist thread is for constructive feedback only, so if you want to vent about NBA 2K16, please find (or create) another thread in the Forum to do so.

To provide the best possible feedback, it’s also highly recommended that elaborate on points as necessary, and avoiding simply saying things like “better gameplay”. “Better gameplay” doesn’t really tell the developers anything, whereas explaining what you don’t like about the gameplay, and how you feel it needs to improve, is much more useful. The same goes for game modes, online functionality, and so on.

Check out the NBA 2K17 Wishlist thread here! There you’ll find more information on the best way to post your feedback. As I mentioned in the thread, we’ll likely be compiling a “Top Wishes” list once the Wishlist starts to take shape, and we have something resembling a consensus for the most desired Wishes. With that said, feel free to start contributing!

Wayback Wednesday: NBA Live 08’s Hidden Historical Teams

Michael Jordan vs. Joe Dumars in the Ultimate Jordan Roster for NBA Live 08

Welcome to Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! This is a feature where we look back on yesteryear, dig into the archives, indulge in some nostalgia, and in some cases, wonder just what we were thinking. Check in every Wednesday for features and retrospectives on old basketball video games, old NLSC editorials published as-is with added commentary, and other flashback content.

Throughout the history of video games, most titles have had a secret or two to discover. Of course, for as long as gamers have been searching for hidden secrets and extra content, urban legends and hoaxes have also been making the rounds, leading to many wasted hours looking for something that isn’t there. Basketball games are no exception, and the fact that some games have featured hidden and unlockable content has naturally led to rumours of all sorts of secret players, teams, and other features, none of which were actually true.

Outside of a supposed hidden and unlockable dunk contest, one of the most popular rumours in NBA Live over the years was that by completing certain objectives, you could unlock historical teams. Of course, to include historical teams in the first place, EA Sports would need to secure the likeness rights for a lot of players. As such, retro teams didn’t become a reality until 2K Sports finally added them in NBA 2K11 via the Jordan Challenge, and they’ve managed to keep a bulk of their historical content in the game up until today. However, it appears that EA Sports was actually trying to do something similar, back in the days of NBA Live 08.

It’s arguably one of the most interesting Easter Eggs we’ve ever discovered, while poking through the files of a basketball video game. So let’s take a look back…way back…

Monday Tip-Off: Sportsmanship & Online Basketball Gaming

Kevin Durant dunking in NBA Live 16

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Get your week started here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to basketball video games.

If you caught Episode #144 of the NLSC Podcast, you’ll know that I went on a bit of a rant about a recent experience I had while playing NBA Live 16 online. In a nutshell, I had an opponent who was losing quit with a couple of seconds left in the fourth quarter, to avoid the loss and rob me of the win. Needless to say, I wasn’t exactly pleased by that turn of events. The word I used on the Podcast was “scumbag”, and I stand by that description. It was not the sporting thing to do, plain and simple.

The matter of sportsmanship in online basketball gaming is an important one, and since podcasts aren’t everyone’s favourite medium, I’ve decided to write about it in this week’s Monday Tip-Off. Of course, the issue isn’t exclusive to basketball games, but when it comes to both major hoops titles, unfortunately there aren’t really any measures in place to prevent or at least discourage it. Don’t like the way things are going? Want to avoid picking up a loss? Then just quit, or cause a disconnection. Or preferably, don’t. To put it bluntly, it’s incredibly poor form, and shouldn’t be allowed.

You may feel that it isn’t a big deal, that it’s just the way it goes with online play. I would strongly disagree with that assertion, however. This is something that both EA Sports and 2K Sports need to find a way to address, and behaviour that certain basketball gamers need to cut out.
