NBA 2K24 PC Highlights: Celtics vs. Knicks & Ball Brothers

NBA 2K24 PC Highlights: Celtics vs. Knicks & Ball Brothers

With the focus being placed on the PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X|S release, we didn’t learn much about the PC version of NBA 2K24 during the preview season. As it turns out, there was some good news, as the game has native mod support this year. It’s also quite solid on the sticks, as you’ll hear Dee and I discuss in the next episode of the NLSC Podcast.

Before that drops however, we can show you what the gameplay in NBA 2K24 PC is like! Dee has uploaded two highlight reels to our YouTube channel, with the first coming from a game he played against the CPU, using his Boston Celtics to take on the New York Knicks. It spotlights the footplanting and player movement – two positive attributes that we discuss on the show – as well as a variety of highlight plays.

The second video is from a Play With Friends Online game between me and Dee. In this head-to-head showdown, I took control of the Chicago Bulls, while Dee used the Charlotte Hornets, setting up a battle between Lonzo Ball and LaMelo Ball. The Big Baller Brothers had their moments, but Zach LaVine ended up stealing the show in what was a fun battle from start to finish!

You can check out both highlight reels below. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more basketball gaming content, and as always, let us know what you’d like to see us play. There’ll obviously be more NBA 2K24 videos moving forward, but we’ll still be dipping into our collection to play old favourites as well, so please feel free to hit us up with any suggestions.

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: ’93 Bulls vs ’93 Hornets

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: '93 Bulls vs '93 Hornets

Happy New Year, basketball gamers! I hope you’ll join us throughout 2023 to discuss basketball video games, share and download mods, and enjoy our original content. To that end, I’m tipping off the New Year with the next instalment in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series, featuring the ’93 Bulls taking on the ’93 Hornets.

Can you believe this matchup is a throwback to thirty years ago? As much I’m trying not to think about that, I had a blast replaying it in NBA 2K14, a game that turns ten this year. This clash between the two-time defending champion Bulls and an up-and-coming Hornets team gave us some exciting moments in real life, and also inspired Michael Jordan’s challenge in NBA 2K12’s NBA’s Greatest mode. MJ was in his prime at this point, so you can expect a mixture of high-flying dunks and savvy plays. Scottie Pippen, Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson, and Muggsy Bogues also contributed to the highlight reel, presented with post-production effects to resemble a broadcast from the 90s.

You can catch up on the entire NBA 2K14 Retro Series using this playlist! While you’re there, be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel. We’ve been stepping up our video content over the past couple of years – an initiative that Dee has been spearheading – and that’s definitely going to continue throughout 2023. So, stay tuned, and feel free to suggest historical matchups for me to play in future instalments of this series!

Wayback Wednesday: Playing With Defunct & Relocated Teams

Wayback Wednesday: Playing With Defunct & Relocated Teams

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at the defunct and relocated teams that are fun to play with in older games.

If it isn’t obvious from producing a weekly Wayback Wednesday feature, as well as playing old favourites with Dee4Three on Parsec and discussing them on the NLSC Podcast, I love revisiting basketball games from multiple eras, and bringing them back into my gaming rotation. Sometimes I get on an extended kick with a game, as is the case with NBA 2K14 for PlayStation 4, while other titles I just like to throw on for an exhibition or two. Whether I’m playing solo or with Dee, those exhibition games always raise an important question: who to play with, and against?

Obviously, our favourite teams – the Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics – will always be an option. Of course, there are some Bulls and Celtics teams throughout time that aren’t as fun to play with, while other teams are far more intriguing. However, more and more, I find myself being drawn to the defunct, relocated, or re-branded teams in older basketball video games. Let’s take a look back…way back…

Wayback Wednesday: Former NBA Teams & Video Games

Wayback Wednesday: Former NBA Teams & Video Games

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at former NBA teams, and their now-nostalgic appearances in video games.

Something that I’ve explored in several of my Wayback Wednesday features this year is the way that old video games act as interactive almanacs. Yes, it’s fun to revisit old hoops titles simply to remember what the gameplay was like. Certain games hold up quite well, and for some gamers, their simplicity can even make them more appealing than the newer releases. However, as I’ve said on many occasions, there’s something really enjoyable about looking back at a snapshot of the NBA by scrolling through the rosters and seeing now-retired players, as well as familiar faces in strange places.

To that point, I’ve mostly been focusing on the players, but there’s a lot of nostalgia with the teams as well. Not only is it a fun trip down memory lane to see lineups that we’ve forgotten – some of them full of “What Ifs” – but it’s great to see all of the old branding as well. From logos that teams used for years, to short-lived uniforms and the classic jerseys that still rank as our favourites, we can see it all when we dust off old games. With a handful of franchises relocating and/or changing their names over the past couple of decades, we can also see those former NBA teams live on through the virtual hardwood. Let’s take a look back…way back…

Wayback Wednesday: Marking NBA Milestones in Video Games

Wayback Wednesday: Marking NBA Milestones in Video Games

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m reflecting on how video games mark different NBA milestones, and how it dates them.

On several occasions, I’ve mentioned that video games serve as wonderful time capsules for the NBA. They’re a snapshot of the league at the time they’re released, preserving the rosters, team branding, and the rules and formats of the era. When you revisit an old NBA video game, you’re often reminded of players’ brief and forgotten tenures with certain teams, “What If” scenarios and lineups that never lived up to the hype, and the jerseys and logos that you both loved and hated. In a way, old games can act as interactive almanacs, and are a fun way to revisit NBA history.

With that in mind, basketball video games preserve different eras and milestones in the real NBA as much as they’re a timeline of gaming and technology. In many of my Wayback Wednesday features, as well as my 25th Anniversary of NBA Live articles, I’ve reflected on how various titles have represented an evolution in the genre, and the improvements that are noticeable from year to year. On this occasion, I’m looking at how they represent NBA milestones and significant changes in the league, as well as the way those events make them dated. Let’s take a look back…way back…

Wayback Wednesday: The Weirdest NBA Tall Tale I Ever Heard

An NBA Tall Tale: Michael Jordan on the Hornets (NBA 2K19)

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m reminiscing about the weirdest NBA tall tale that I ever heard as a kid back in the 90s.

Although the Internet is a place of much subjective debate when it comes to the NBA, it offers plenty of resources for looking up objective statistics, records, and other such information. That makes it more difficult to concoct rumours, and try to trick your fellow fans with tall tales. I recently remembered the weirdest tall tale that someone told me back in the 90s: that Michael Jordan was originally drafted by the Charlotte Hornets! It got me thinking about how this bizarre tall tale originated, so I’ve decided to re-tell the story using clips from NBA 2K19. Let’s take a look back…way back…

Check it out here if you can’t see the embedded video. I’m working on some more video ideas for Wayback Wednesday and other features, including a comparison of NBA Live 95 and NBA Showdown, so be sure to subscribe to the NLSC’s YouTube channel! I hope that you enjoyed this look back at a weird NBA tall tale from the 90s, as told by NBA 2K19. Has anyone ever tried to fool you with an unusual and unlikely myth about the NBA? If so, share it in the comments section below! Additionally, if there’s a game you’re particularly nostalgic for, let me know what it is, and I might profile it (or an interesting aspect of it) in a future Wayback Wednesday feature.

Wayback Wednesday: The Charlotte Bobcats in NBA Live 2004

Charlotte Bobcats in NBA Live 2004

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at the presence of the Charlotte Bobcats in NBA Live 2004.

The Charlotte Bobcats are no more. Well, the team is still around, but they are now of course the new version of the Charlotte Hornets, following the purchase of the name after New Orleans became the Pelicans. It’s probably safe to say that most NBA fans, both in North Carolina and elsewhere, were happy to see the familiar branding return. The Bobcats name was often criticised, with many fans feeling that it was a poor fit for an NBA team. With the team set to celebrate its 30th Anniversary this year, it’s great to have the Hornets back in the league.

Of course, the Charlotte Bobcats era remains a part of the club’s history, too. While the official lineage of the Hornets and Pelicans has been retconned to consider the Hornets inactive from 2002 to 2004 and the Pelicans to be an expansion team that joined the league in 2002, in reality the resurrected Hornets are the league’s newest team in terms of their operations, becoming the 30th franchise as the Bobcats in 2004. They would actually make their video game debut a year earlier however, as they were included in NBA Live 2004. Let’s take a look back…way back…
