This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.
Just like the wishlists, mix articles go best in groups of 3. So accompanying articles on my favorite MomentousCeltic mixes and my favorite mixes that I made, I am going to list three of my favorite “old” mixes. “Old” is a weird way of classifying these videos because I know Shady00018 has older ones, but I do feel like there is this subjective line about three to four years ago before the big YouTubers got popular. It will work well enough for this article’s purposes at least, so enough writing, let’s watch some mixes.
Free Throw – pdub’s Kryptolive
I can’t even find the original thread, post, or video file, but I still love this mix by our own pdub. Done with NBA Live 06 and partially featuring his created player on the (then terrible) Clippers, this was the first video that drove home the importance of syncing footage to audio for me. A bit obvious with the stuttering, but most every action occurs on a downbeat and it is freakin’ awesome. Great song choice to show off that video syncing and a great showcase of the good and funny things in NBA Live 06.
Jumper – Bigdog025’s Vince Carter
If I remember correctly, this was one of the first videos that I watched with a bit of a story associated with it. Vince Carter getting injured, putting work in through NBA 2K11’s practice mode, and then returning with amazing plays for the Suns. It was a neat concept, made even better when he remade the video with real life footage when Vince Carter joined the Mavericks.
Three Pointer – delljr916’s THE BEST NBA 09 LIVE MIX OUT!! ..quickstrike master pt.2
Take points off for the title, and the audio levels, but goto 1:10 and see why I love this video. Over-the-defender. No canimation, just a completely unique game moment in NBA Live 09 that really didn’t lend itself to stuff like that happening. He captured all the things I liked about the QuickStrike dribbling that year and took full advantage of the added replay controls, and exports, EA Sports gave us.
And One – GTstyle’s NBA Live 07 PC Weird Shots
This was too awesome to not mention. One of the earliest uses of smooth motion filters in a basketball video game mix that I can remember, and fully unique on top of that. Graphic mods that made NBA Live 07 look somewhat decent a street court make it tasty, but Outkast is just icing. I don’t know if I can say this is technically a mix (maybe a mini-mix?) but it is well worth 55 seconds of your time to see some dunk contest toss HORSE.
I hope you enjoyed the videos, and please share any old mixes you like in the comments below.
