This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.
After reading Andrew’s Friday Five last week on why we do wishlists, I couldn’t help but think more about what other features are missing from our yearly NBA basketball video games. So rather than look at past games and features that have been missing in action for years like yesterday’s Dumb Fact Monday, I thought I would look at other sports video games and steal some ideas from them. So here are 3 features I would like to see in NBA Live 15 or NBA 2K15 that are from other sports video games.
Free Throw – GameFace
This has been a commonly requested feature ever since EA used this technology in their other sports games. GameFace allows the user to take an image of themselves, upload it, and import their own face into the game. With the popularity of MyCAREER, I am very surprised 2K has not already implemented this into their game, especially with how lacking their create a player options are on both current and next gen versions of NBA 2K14.
What amazes me with the absence of this feature is how widely used, I think, it would be. The Xbox 360 and Xbox One have Kinect, the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 both have camera accessories, and I think as long as the result didn’t look completely disfigured (unless done on purpose) it could be one of the best features from previous current generation games that would make a new game feel like next gen. It could just be me, but I had a blast importing myself and my friends into Fight Night Round 4. I’ve beat their faces senseless, now I just want to dunk on them.
Layup – Photo Mode
No, I don’t mean a customizable ENB Series filter in-game, I mean a full blown photo mode similar to the ones seen in Gran Turismo and other racing games. NBA 2K14 on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is one of the best looking video games I’ve ever seen, and even NBA Live 14 has its moments. Yet both games are severely limited in their options for taking a good screenshot (or video for that matter).
Only being able to toggle depth of field on and off makes finding the correct distance to be from the target awkward, and the effect can be both overpowering and underwhelming. NBA Live 14’s camera is much more flexible than NBA 2K14’s, but we still can’t take an action shot from the floor or from the perspective of someone in the front row. With both next generation consoles being as socially connected as they are, I would think EA and 2K would want to try and take advantage of that by giving users more options to show their games off.
Three Pointer – Additional Leagues
NBA 2K14 sort of delivered on this with the addition of 14 Euroleague teams, and previous NBA Live games gave us FIBA national teams, but I still want to see something on the scale of FIFA in an NBA video game. Even if EA or 2K stayed within the realm of NBA ownership, bringing in the NBA Development League as more than an Association feature, or even the WNBA would give the game more replayability, even if it was just for niche fans.
Going beyond NBA ownership, imagine a game with a built-in college league. Even if it was completely generic due to the latest NCAA controversies with video games, I’m sure even casual fans would enjoy that. Full Euroleague and FIBA integration would increase the worldwide appeal of the game, and going as far as including the NBL or PBA with all their unique rules would make many local fans happy. This is very far fetched, but just maybe there are enough people that would buy these as DLC expansion packs to justify the costs.
So from a bit reasonable to completely insane, I feel like this was a solid Tuesday Triple. If you can think of other features from sports video games that need to be in an NBA basketball video game, let me know in the comments below. Hope you enjoyed, and remember, the PC versions of NBA Live and NBA 2K games already have most of these with community mods!
