First NBA 2K12 Roster Updates Could Come This Weekend

With the offseason now officially underway, players are beginning to sign with teams, trades are going through (with the exception of yesterday’s controversial situation) and rookies are officially joining the teams that drafted them. The NBA is back!

This also means that the first official roster updates for NBA 2K12 will be coming soon, quite possibly this weekend according to a Tweet by Ronnie 2K. The updates will not contain any gameplay or game mode fixes – that update will be coming later – but will include rookies that have signed contracts and all other player movement that has been made official as of the time an update is finalised and released. As noted in Ronnie’s Tweet, Ron Artest’s name will also be changed to Metta World Peace with the first update.

In the meantime, you can check out a screenshot of Kyrie Irving in a Cavaliers uniform over on the official NBA 2K Facebook page that has been posted as a teaser for the updates.

The iOS version of NBA 2K12 for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is currently available in the App Store at a special “welcome back” price. For a limited time, the iPhone/iPod Touch version is available for $2.99 while the iPad version can be picked up for $4.99. 2K Sports have also released a new trailer for the occasion, which you can check out below.

NBA 2K12 iOS features two control schemes – the traditional on-screen joystick and a precise one touch system – as well as all 30 NBA teams with rosters from the 2010/2011 season. Game modes include Quick Game, Season, Playoffs, Practice, Situation and the Jordan Challenge (but not NBA’s Greatest). It is also compatible with Game Center.

New CBA Ratified, Big Moves Already Reported

The NBA’s owners and players have approved the new labor deal, officially bringing an end to the NBA lockout. Free agency will begin tomorrow with several players having reportedly already agreed in principle to deals with new teams. In huge news, the Los Angeles Lakers were reportedly set to acquire Chris Paul from the New Orleans Hornets in a deal that would also include the Houston Rockets, but the league has since blocked the deal.

Don’t forget you can discuss all the latest moves and rumours in the NBA & Basketball Talk section of the NLSC Forum. Roster updates for NBA 2K12 and NBA Jam: On Fire Edition should also commence shortly, though please note that rookies cannot be added to the rosters until they officially sign with their NBA teams. I also expect to have roster updates for NBA Live 2005 through NBA Live 08 out at some point, though I cannot set a specific date at this time.

EA’s NBA sim still on track for 2012 (’s The Gamer)

NBA Elite 11: Kevin Durant’s Jon Robinson has posted a short article on EA’s next NBA sim game, which will be released October next year in time for the 2012/2013 NBA season. There isn’t much to report at this time but the article does include some quotes from EA Sports president Andrew Wilson, who reiterates their goal of bouncing back strong after a two year hiatus for the franchise.

“Anytime you’re looking to reboot a franchise, you’re looking to find a different type of creative energy,” Wilson told me as I sat down with him at a recent EA Sports event. “When we rebooted the ‘FIFA’ franchise, we introduced a whole new team that rebuilt that engine from scratch. We did the same for ‘NHL.’ We completely rebooted and rebuilt that game with a new creative team.

“And while the ‘NBA’ creative energy could’ve happened anywhere, it just so happened that we had some developers in the EA Tiburon studios who were very, very passionate basketball fans. The Orlando Magic literally train 100 yards from our studio there, so we have a big basketball culture built around that creative energy, and what we will deliver will be a fantastic game.”

As soon as details begin to emerge on the game – most likely early next year – we’ll be sure to report them. We’ll also be looking to set up some developer interviews and other preview features as in previous years, so keep it locked right here at the NLSC. We’ve already submitted several Wishlist materials to the new development team at EA Tiburon who were very receptive to our feedback, so hopefully we can do our part in helping the series can make a strong comeback next year. Feel free to post your thoughts in the comments below or in this thread; you can also check out our main Wishlist here and our supplementary Wishlist materials here.

Our own JaoSming has discovered that NBA Elite is no longer available in the iTunes store. Despite the cancellation of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version of NBA Elite 11, a mobile version for the iPhone and iPod Touch was released last October complete with all 30 NBA teams, exhibition play, an 82 game regular season and unlockable legends.

An updated version was later made available which included updated rosters, the 2011 All-Star teams and various fixes for gameplay and game modes.

NBA 2K12 Patch Coming Before Christmas; Notes on Roster Updates

Kotaku’s Owen Good has posted an article discussing the impact that the end of the lockout will have on NBA 2K12, which includes some comments from producer Erick Boenisch and 2K Sports’ vice president for marketing Jason Argent. The article notably mentions that the big patch is expected to be out by Christmas and that roster updates will be more frequent this year, with rookies added as they sign with their teams.

Roster updates will come more frequently than they have in the past, Boenisch said, accounting for both the influx of rookie players and any changes in free agency or pre-season trades, which began on Wednesday. Instead of waiting until the final day before the regular season tip-off, Boenisch said the game will push roster updates as frequently as possible over the next three weeks. That kind of update comes totally through the 2K Sports server and isn’t subject to the kind of review Microsoft or Sony has for a game patch or title update. A patch still is coming before Dec. 25, Boenisch said, but he held off on committing to a specific date.

History suggests that while the roster updates should be made available simultaneously on all platforms that receive them, the big patch that’s coming for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of NBA 2K12 will not be available for the PC version until a later date, possibly January or February. 2K’s community manager Ronnie 2K has previously mentioned that the PC version will likely receive a combined update at some point after the consoles, but no timetable for its release has been made available as yet.
