The Friday Five: 5 Random Basketball Video Game Facts

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

Now that JaoSming has changed the focus of Dumb Mondays from random trivia to a random assortment of facts, opinions and discussion topics, I don’t feel quite as guilty about borrowing the original concept for a Friday Five topic. This week, I’m trying my hand at serving up some trivia about a few of my all-time favourite basketball video games.

Basically, this is a collection of facts and trivia that I’ve wanted to talk about, but haven’t been able to work into any of my Friday Fives so far. Chances are I’ll revisit them if the right topics present themselves, but just in case I don’t find a way to bring them up again, here are 5 Random Basketball Video Game Facts that I hope you’ll enjoy reading about.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #77

We may be at least a few weeks away from the NBA video game preview season, but we do actually have some news on this year’s games to discuss in Episode #77 of the NLSC Podcast. Join Arcane, JaoSming, and myself as we talk NBA Live 15 and NBA 2K15, NBA Live 14 and NBA 2K14, modding developments, and of course, the 2014 NBA Playoffs.

  • NBA Live 15 has been confirmed, but unfortunately, it’s console only. We briefly mourn that fact, but pledge to campaign on behalf of the PC platform if the opportunity arises.
  • Similarly, NBA 2K15 is already available to pre-order, on the same platforms as last year. The price of the PC version leads us to speculate on a next gen port.
  • Kevin Durant has been confirmed as the cover player for NBA 2K15, the same day he was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player. With NBA Live 15’s cover player still yet to be announced, we throw out a couple of suggestions.
  • Speaking of this year’s games, we also talk about some of the predictions that JaoSming made in his most recent Dumb Mondays feature.
  • A second Steam key for NBA 2K14 PC is up for grabs. Get your entries in before next week’s show!
  • In a quick modding round-up, JaoSming has some news on RED MC, and bigh0rt gets some more love for the NBA JAM 2K14 mod.
  • Moving on to this week’s NBA discussion, we give our thoughts on the latest award winners to be announced.
  • We’re coming off one of the most exciting first rounds in NBA Playoffs history. Will the second round be just as entertaining?
  • A couple of other recent stories are discussed, including a possible return to Toronto for Vince Carter, and the firing of Mark Jackson.
  • We wrap up the show with a couple of quick mailbag questions.

Click Play to listen to the show!

As always, feel free to give us your opinion on this week’s show, as well as any of the topics that we discussed, either in the comments below or here in the Forum. If you’ve got a mailbag submission, be sure to hit us up here.

Update on Playoffs Content for NBA Live 14 Ultimate Team

As promised in a previous bulletin, NBA Live 14 Ultimate Team continues to receive updates with new content throughout the 2014 NBA Playoffs. The official NBA Live Twitter noted that a couple of new Fantasy Showdowns have been added now that we’re on to Round 2 of the Playoffs, and an article over on the official website provides a rundown of some of the items that you can expect to find in Ultimate Team packs.

Currently, special Playoff Performers cards are randomly inserted into packs, featuring players such as newly crowned MVP Kevin Durant, Paul George, and DeAndre Jordan. Special cards for other noteworthy players, such as Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams, are also available.

Speaking of online content for NBA Live 14, LIVE Season’s BIG Moments continue to be updated throughout the Playoffs as well, as memorable performances such as Damian Lillard’s epic gamewinning three against the Rockets and Russell Westbrook’s triple double in Game 7 against the Grizzlies are available to be replayed. You can check out a couple of examples over on the NLSC YouTube channel.

NLSC Forum Story Thread Interviews: Kenny

We certainly love our basketball games here at the NLSC, so when it comes to modes like Dynasty, Association, and MyCAREER, some of us like to share the experience with our fellow gamers. In the Basketball Video Game Stories section of the NLSC Forum, several gamers maintain story threads chronicling their adventures and achievements in the virtual NBA. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be running a series of interviews with some of our most prominent storytellers, to get an insight into their experiences and discover why they enjoy maintaining story threads.

Our first interviewee is Kenny, formerly known as badreligionau. Kenny is perhaps best known in the Stories section for his NBA Live 10 Dynasty with the Denver Nuggets, The Next Level, which is one of the longest Dynasty games we’ve ever seen. More recently, he’s been sharing his journey through an NBA 2K13 Association with the Cleveland Cavaliers, now in its third season.

The Friday Five: 5 Reasons I Want Another NBA Jam Game

Blake Griffin in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

As JaoSming noted in the Tuesday Triple, it’s been a while since an arcade basketball title was released. A little while ago, we were teased by the prospect of a new NBA Jam on the game’s official Twitter page, by way of an “unauthorised” Tweet that has since been deleted. While EA Sports currently has no announcements regarding the future of the NBA Jam series, I’m hoping that we will indeed see a new NBA Jam game sooner rather than later.

The overarching reason of course is that I’m a big fan of NBA Jam from way back in the day and as long as I’m gaming, I’m interested in seeing new releases from my favourite series (incidentally, I’m still waiting on that Fallout 4 announcement, Bethesda). I do have a few specific thoughts on the matter though, so without any further ado, here are five reasons why I want another NBA Jam game.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #76

We’re back! After sitting out last week, Arcane, JaoSming and I are back in the “booth” with Episode #76 of the NLSC Podcast. We’ve got a lot to talk about this week, from NBA Live 14 content and another NBA 2K14 patch to the 2014 NBA Playoffs and the Donald Sterling controversy.

  • We open the show with some talk about an upcoming feature and the return of the NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week.
  • Speaking of the Top 10 Plays, sharing videos from the PlayStation 4 version of NBA Live 14 and NBA 2K14 just got a whole lot easier.
  • NBA 2K14 next gen will be receiving a fifth official patch and a shoe update. No patch notes until release, though. Hmm…
  • JaoSming provides an update on all the work that’s going into bigh0rt’s NBA JAM 2K14 mod for NBA 2K14 PC.
  • NBA Live 14 Ultimate Team is receiving new content throughout the Playoffs. We also have an update on the NBA Live 14 rosters, and a reminder about our NBA Live 15 Wishlist.
  • We get to our feature discussion for basketball gaming this week: What does it mean to be dedicated to a series?
  • The 2014 NBA Playoffs are well underway, and a couple of teams have already gone home. We give our thoughts on all the first round series.
  • You may have heard a thing or two about Los Angeles Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling during this past week. We have a couple of things to say about the matter as well.
  • A couple of the NBA’s regular season award winners have been named. No complaints so far!
  • We wrap up this week’s episode with a couple of questions in the return of the Mailbag segment.

As always, we’re keen to hear your thoughts on this week’s show and any of the topics that we discussed, so feel free to have your say in the comments below or here in the Forum. You can also hit us up with any mailbag questions, comments or topic suggestions in this thread.
