NLSC Podcast – Episode #66

Get your kicks with the NLSC Podcast, Episode #66! Join Arcane and myself as we talk NBA Live 14 and NBA 2K14, mention some upcoming modding projects and prepare to embarrass ourselves with some predictions for the 2014 All-Star Weekend.

  • The big patch is out for NBA Live 14. We’ll have some more detailed impressions in the coming weeks, but for now we encourage everyone to check out our interview with Scott O’Gallagher.
  • Unfortunately, the NBA Live 14 demo doesn’t appear to be receiving the patch. It’s a missed opportunity, but we consider the possibility it might be technically unfeasible.
  • Once again, we reflect upon the depth and accuracy of professional reviews of basketball video games.
  • Both Andrew and Arcane have some ideas for new mods that will hopefully come to fruition in the not too distant future.
  • We encourage everyone to check out JaoSming’s latest Tuesday Triple, containing some excellent advice for new and experienced modders alike.
  • The 2014 All-Star Weekend is almost upon us! We give our thoughts on the changes to this year’s events, along with our picks for all the winners.
  • We wrap up the show with a couple of other NBA related topics.

New NBA Jam Game Possibly In the Works?

If you follow NBA Jam on Twitter, you may have seen a Tweet asking gamers for a Re-Tweet if they are ready for a new NBA Jam, seemingly hinting at the possibility of another game coming out at some point in the not too distant future. With a new generation of consoles out, it certainly wouldn’t be too surprising if EA Sports is looking to continue the popular series started by Midway back in 1993.

The most recent game in the series is the well-received NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, released digitally through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Android version of NBA Jam also recently received a roster update, which included audio and artwork for the Brooklyn Nets and New Orleans Pelicans.

No further details are available at this time, but we’ll be sure to post them as soon as they come our way.

NLSC 2013/2014 Open Source Roster for NBA 2K14

I’ve been meaning to get into some NBA 2K modding for the past couple of years, so I’ve finally bitten the bullet and released something. What I’ve come up with is an open source 2013/2014 season roster update for NBA 2K14 PC. In a nutshell, I don’t know how often I’ll be able to update the rosters, but I’d like to get an open source roster out there that other modders can take and use as a base for their own current season updates.

The current release is quite basic, featuring lineups and rotations that have been updated as of February 9th, 2014. I’ve also corrected a couple of jersey numbers from the February 9th official roster update, removed all injuries and added Anthony Davis to the West All-Stars in place of Kobe Bryant, who has been ruled out of this year’s game due to his knee injury.

In the long run, I’d like to make adjustments to player ratings, add missing historic players and include other enhancements to not only provide a solid roster update, but also provide a quality base roster to provide a leg up for anyone who wants to maintain a regular roster update for NBA 2K14 PC. It’s an open source community project however, so even if I can’t spend much time on it myself, it’s my hope that others in the community will be able to contribute. As such, I encourage anyone to take it and immediately start working on their own update if they wish.

Pick it up here in our Downloads section! For more information, please see this thread.

February 8th Official Roster Update for NBA 2K14

New official rosters are now available for NBA 2K14 on all platforms, featuring lineups that have been updated through February 8th, 2014. In addition to accounting for the latest transactions, injuries and players returning to action, the latest update also includes the 2014 All-Star court and jerseys, along with the new basketball featuring Adam Silver’s signature.

As always, the update will come through automatically as long as your PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One is connected to the Internet when you fire up NBA 2K14. However, if you’re playing the PC version and would like to update your game manually for whatever reason, be sure to pick up our offline pack which contains the latest roster and online data files.

NBA Live 14 Patch Notes

EA Sports has published another open letter from NBA Live 14 Executive Producer Sean O’Brien, discussing the upcoming patch for the game which is expected to be pushed through next week. The letter goes into detail about some of the additions and enhancements that we can expect to see in the patch, including:

  • New Shootaround mode, as seen in the recent tutorial videos.
  • Visual upgrades including tuned lighting, with enhancements to players and uniforms.
  • Gameplay improvements including improved responsiveness, ball and passing physics, momentum and animations.
  • The 2014 All-Star court and jerseys.
  • Additional Hardwood Classics jerseys
  • The new basketball with Adam Silver’s signature.
  • Some changes and fixes for the camera in LIVE Season games; the default camera is now the broadcast view, rather than the player lock camera.
  • Various bug fixes in LIVE Season and Ultimate Team.

Sean also mentions that the game has seen over 13,000 updates from Synergy Sports, while confirming that the recent player face scans that have been mentioned on the game’s official Twitter are actually being done for NBA Live 15. On that note, Sean stresses that the work the team has been doing on the update for NBA Live 14 has not been at the expense of NBA Live 15, as all of their efforts are geared towards building for the future, while also providing some fixes for the current product.

Feel free to share your thoughts on the upcoming patch in the comments below, as well as in this thread in the NBA Live 14 section of the NLSC Forum.

NBA Live 14 Offensive Playcalling Tutorial

As they’ve been doing for the past few weeks, EA Sports have posted another quick tutorial video for NBA Live 14, this time covering offensive playcalling. Similar to the defensive playcalling tutorial that was posted last week, the video provides an overview of the playcalling controls and a succinct rundown of how to call the advanced team specific plays, as well as run the four different types of quick motion plays.

You can watch the latest tutorial below, or check it out here over on YouTube if you can’t see the embedded video. If you’ve got any tips for offensive playcalling and strategies in NBA Live 14, feel free to share them in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion taking place in the NBA Live 14 section of the NLSC Forum.

The Friday Five: 5 Great Things David Stern Did For The NBA

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

After 30 years, David Stern’s tenure as the commissioner of the NBA came to an end last Saturday, February 1st. For those of us who grew up watching the NBA in the 80s and 90s, he’s the only NBA commissioner we’ve ever known, so it feels a little strange to see someone else in the role. For the first year or so, I’m guessing it’ll be a bit weird to see Adam Silver presenting trophies, not to mention his signature on the basketball.

Last week, Yahoo! NBA posted a slideshow spotlighting five of David Stern’s missteps, a well-chosen selection of some of his most noteworthy blunders on the job. It’s certainly fair to acknowledge failure along with success, but with Stern bashing being such a popular pastime for NBA fans, it’s easy to forget all of the good things that he’s done for the league. Therefore, this week I’m taking a look at five great things that David Stern did during his time as commissioner of the NBA.
