How NBA Live captures an NBA star’s moves (USA Today)

USA Today has posted a feature which takes a look at the motion capture sessions for NBA Live 14. It includes quotes from Damian Lillard, who recently visited EA Tiburon to have his moves captured for the game. Interestingly, it mentions that Synergy data was used to determine the drills and sets they needed to use to properly capture all of Lillard’s signature moves.

The feature also mentions that Lillard’s facial expressions were captured for NBA Live 14. Check it out and add your thoughts in the comments below, as well as here in the NLSC Forum. Thanks to hiteshom for the heads up.

The Friday Five: 5 Old School Basketball Video Game Oddities

It’s Friday once again, so welcome one and all to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! If you’re not familiar with The Friday Five and you’re wondering what it’s all about, this is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

Many of us have been playing basketball video games for a long time and we’ve seen them come a long way over the years. Although those old games may appear to be quite primitive now, the best of them were actually quite good for their day. Should you go back and play them today, you’ll be reminded why you spent so much time with them all those years ago. However, you’ll also be reminded of a lot of odd, quirky things that you wouldn’t expect to see in one of today’s basketball games. So, this week I’m getting nostalgic once again and taking a look back at some oddities that I remember from old school basketball titles.

First NBA 2K14 Developer Insights Coming This Weekend

NBA 2K14 will be on display at PAX Prime this weekend, bringing us more information about the game along with some raw gameplay footage. Responding to a question on Twitter, Ronnie also mentioned that Developer Insight videos will be released during the convention, beginning with a look at Signature Skills and Dynamic Living Rosters.

In an earlier Tweet, Ronnie revealed that news on the next gen version of NBA 2K14 will be coming towards the end of September. We’ll be covering all the info as it comes in, but in the meantime be sure to join in the discussion that’s taking place in the NBA 2K14 section of the NLSC Forum.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #43

The past week has brought us more in the way of news and previews for NBA Live 14 and NBA 2K14, so JaoSming, Arcane and I are back to recap and react to all the latest information in Episode #43 of the NLSC Podcast. • Rising Star mode has been announced for NBA Live 14. We talk about what we think so far and what we’re hoping to see.
  • We also recap a couple of other NBA Live 14 news items, including a Q&A with Damian Lillard and another playtesting session.
  • Unfortunately, we wrapped up recording before the NBA 2K14 current gen trailer came out, but we recap some other tidbits including hands-on impressions and legends screenshots.
  • Some more gameplay videos have come out of Gamescom, while Ronnie provided some other quick clips. We talk about whether we’re hyped for NBA 2K14 current gen.
  • A few more details have also emerged on Path to Greatness. Spoiler: thumbs in the middle.
  • Moving on to our featured discussion…are developers lazy? Or is that just another snarky buzzword that we should abolish?
  • JaoSming is done with NBA 2K13 on PlayStation 3. The lure of modding the PC version is just too strong!
  • Allen Iverson and Tracy McGrady are the latest former All-Stars to hang it up, following Grant Hill and Jason Kidd. We consider each of their chances of getting into the Hall of Fame.
  • We finish up with a few mailbag questions.

As always, we hope that you enjoy this week’s episode and invite you to share your feedback, along with your thoughts on any of the topics that we discussed, either in the comments below or here in the Forum.

Behind the Scenes with the NBA Live 14 Developers (Dime Magazine)

Dime Magazine has gone behind the scenes of NBA Live 14 with three of the developers: Scott O’Gallagher, Ryan Santos and Ryan Ferwerda. The guys talk about the different disciplines that have gone into creating NBA Live 14, taking the game to the next level and the EA Sports IGNITE engine, the partnership with Synergy Sports and the decision to only release the game on the next generation of consoles.

It’s definitely worth a read to learn a bit more about the philosophy and technology behind NBA Live 14 as EA Sports looks to make a strong comeback with the series. With September looming, we should hopefully be seeing more preview media and specific details on gameplay and features very soon. In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NBA Live 14 section of the NLSC Forum.
