EA Sports confirms NBA Live 14 on Twitter

After NBA Live 14 was mentioned as an upcoming title in EA’s fiscal report last week, it appears as though the game has more or less been officially announced as a new Tweet has been posted on the game’s official Twitter. The Tweet simply reads:

#NBALIVE14 coming to a court near you… #WeAreLIVE

It would seem that initial details about the game are right around the corner, so we’ll of course be posting any information as it becomes available. In the meantime, feel free to leave your comments below, as well as join in the discussion in the NBA Live 14 section of the Forum.

The Friday Five: Enjoying the Playoffs (When Your Team Is Out)

It’s Friday, already? It is indeed, which means it’s time for another edition of The Friday Five! For anyone who’s checking out The Friday Five for the first time, this is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

If you’ve been keeping up with the results of the 2013 NBA Playoffs, you’re no doubt aware that my favourite team, the Chicago Bulls, have been eliminated in the second round in five games at the hands of the defending champion Miami Heat. As such, I’ll be looking for other ways to enjoy and maintain my interest in the rest of the postseason. If you’re in a similar position, here are five suggestions for you to consider.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #29

It’s our biggest panel in our biggest podcast to date, as six of us get together with a special guest for an in-depth discussion on basketball video games. Join Leftos, Arcane, JaoSming, Pdub, Qballer and myself as we’re joined by special guest Da_Czar in Episode #29 of the NLSC Podcast! On the show this week:

  • We welcome a couple of people back to the Podcast and keep our fingers crossed that everything will work out fine with a larger panel.
  • Before we get to the main topic of discussion, we run down a few noteworthy news items, beginning with an exciting new discovery in court modding for NBA 2K.
  • Also in the news this week: NBA Live 14 has unofficially been announced, the Kings are staying put and 2K are seeking playtesters in the Bay Area.
  • With the news out of the way, we launch into our main discussion: realism in basketball video games compared to what we see on TV.
  • We’re joined by Da_Czar, President of the Sim Nation, who certainly has a few thoughts on the matter at hand.
  • Following a discussion on what constitutes cheese, Czar makes a believer out of arcade enthusiast JaoSming.
  • After tossing around ideas for how basketball games can become more realistic, we reflect on the current product and speculate on what the near future holds.

Resources for Continuing Leftos’ Open Source Tools

With Leftos joining the NBA 2K Development Team, he unfortunately will not be able to develop or update any tools for modifying the game. However, since all of his tools are open source, he has made the code available for any other programmers who would like to continue developing his tools and release them in his stead.

For anyone who would like to give that a shot, Leftos has posted some resources that provide an overview of the necessary steps and software to compile the source code. If you’re a programmer who would like to help the community out with some modding tools, be sure to check out the thread and by all means feel free to upload anything you create to our Downloads section!

NBA 2K14 Release Date Revealed, Platforms TBA

As reported by Operation Sports, Take-Two have published a fiscal report that lists their upcoming titles in 2013. NBA 2K14’s listing mentions a release date of October 1st 2013, in line with the usual early October release that we see for NBA video games. The listed platforms are currently To Be Advised, hinting at a next gen release and hopefully leaving the door open for the PC releases to continue.

With EA’s fiscal report previously providing strong hints that the NBA Live series will return this year with NBA Live 14, it’s likely that its targeted release date is also October 1st, since the NBA has traditionally mandated that both titles come out on the same day (cancellations of EA’s games aside). As mentioned in the previous bulletin, it’s also been strongly hinted that NBA Live 14 will be a next gen title. Add your thoughts in the comments below and as always, feel free to take the discussion to the Forum.

NBA Stats Tracker Now Features Play-by-Play Editor

Leftos will be joining the NBA 2K Development Team in the near future, but in the meantime he’s still putting some fantastic work into the NBA Stats Tracker. Version 1.13 has just been released and includes a Play-by-Play Editor, which allows you to insert play-by-play information for any of the games that you’re tracking.

You’ll be able to put the PBP Editor to use with a series of upcoming features, including the ability to calculate boxscores based on play-by-play information and perform analysis such as partial stats calculations. Download it here and check out this thread for more info and support!

May 11th Official Roster for NBA 2K13 Out Now

NBA 2K13 has received another official roster update, containing lineups that have been updated through May 11th, 2013. Amar’e Stoudemire and Tiago Splitter have returned from injury while Stephen Curry, Nate Robinson, Klay Thompson and Steve Nash have received ratings adjustments. Kent Bazemore has also been added to the Golden State Warriors’ lineup, though 19 other players around the league are still missing.

The roster will come through automatically as long as your PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii U is connected to the Internet. I’ve also added the latest roster and online data files to our offline pack, for PC users who would prefer to update their game manually.

Podcast Discussion: Realism of Video Games vs What We See on TV

The main topic of discussion in next week’s episode of the NLSC Podcast is going to be the level of realism that we see in basketball video games compared to what we actually see when watching the NBA on TV. We’re hoping to have a larger panel than usual and are looking forward to putting out an interesting show for you all.

We’re also interested in getting your thoughts on the matter, so that we can read them out during our discussion in Episode #29. How would you rate the realism we’ve seen in basketball games, when making a comparison to what we see on TV? How close is it to representing the real sport? How much realism do you want to see, or believe there needs to be in basketball games? Sound off in the comments below or have your say here in the Forum!

The Friday Five: Top 5 Underrated Features in Basketball Games

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! For the uninitiated, The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

It’s been fun counting down my top five best and worst songs in basketball video games over the past couple of weeks, but this week I felt like talking about something with a little more substance. As such, I’m counting down my Top 5 Underrated Features in Basketball Games. These are elements of gameplay, game modes and other aspects of basketball games that I feel are overlooked, underappreciated or in some cases, simply get a bad rap.

NBA 2K13 Offline Pack Updated With May 7th Official Roster

I’ve been able to get the May 7th official roster update for the PC version of NBA 2K13, so I’ve gone ahead and updated our offline pack. Other folks including our own JaoSming have indicated that they were able to get the update through yesterday, which may indicate that I was encountering some server downtime when I checked for the new rosters, leading me to conclude in yesterday’s post that the PC version had been skipped again. Fortunately, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

As mentioned yesterday, the latest roster features David Lee back in action for the Warriors, Luol Deng out of the Bulls’ lineup and a boost to Marc Gasol’s ratings, bringing his overall up to 85.
