It’s always special when a lesser-known/seldom seen title makes it into the NLSC Top 10 Plays! In this week’s countdown, that’s Sony’s NBA 07, featuring a devastating dunk delivered by LeBron James. The other six featured games are likewise serving up a slew of slams, from backboard-shattering jams to emphatic finishes on two-way plays. Custom rosters are also on display, including NCAA teams in NBA 2K23, fantasy draft rosters in NBA 2K19, and updated 2023 season rosters in NBA Live 19. Once again, it’s clear that the community has been enjoying some fun times on the virtual hardwood this past week. Let’s get to the action!

The Friday Five: 5 Annoyances That Became Novelties

The Friday Five: 5 Annoyances That Became Novelties

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is a list of five annoyances in basketball video games that ended up becoming novelties.

I’m still a sim gamer at heart. When I play franchise games, I prefer to start with real rosters, and allow the alternate reality to develop “organically”, rather than hold a fantasy draft or create fictional scenarios. I want to see sim games strive for a realistic depiction of the sport and its players, with acceptable deviations such as the precise number of dunks. To that point though, I’m not so inflexible that “realistic” means everything is accurate and true to life, down to the last detail. I’ve had fun attempting to play as realistically as possible, but I’ve also enjoyed a looser approach.

With that in mind, there are some things in basketball video games that were once annoyances for me, but now I don’t take them so seriously. Indeed, some of them are now novelties, and nostalgic in their own way. That’s not to say that I’m necessarily walking back on my criticism of them, but my stance has changed from “Ugh, this is awful” to “Actually, this is kind of fun”. It definitely helps that basketball games have improved in many ways throughout the years, with the best ones achieving things that once seemed impossible. When I do go back to some of the older games though, I will see novelties where once I had gripes and annoyances, such as these five examples.

NLSC Podcast #473: What Else Are We Playing?

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #473 of the NLSC Podcast!

There can be no doubt that we’re passionate about basketball video games, but we do have interests outside of the virtual hardwood, too. This week, we’re discussing some of the other titles that have been in our rotations as of late, as well as reflecting on other games that we’ve spent countless hours with over the years. Not surprisingly, we have some similar gaming habits, no matter the genre! After sharing our memories, we open up the mailbag to see what else the community enjoys playing. There’s also a mod teaser to share, a thrilling game of NBA Live 95 PC to recap, and the latest results from our NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! For more information on the NLSC Podcast including episode guides, check out this page in our Wiki. You can also find the show on our YouTube channel, along with the rest of our video content. NLSC YouTube Mid-April Round-Up

NLSC YouTube Mid-April Round-Up

As Dee noted in last week’s NLSC Podcast, we’re consistently uploading basketball gaming videos to the NLSC YouTube channel. It’s an initiative that Dee has been spearheading, and he’s definitely been far more active in uploading than I have recently, in part due to being under the weather. For similar reasons, I’m once again behind in sharing those videos here on the site.

To that end, it’s time for another NLSC YouTube round-up! Over the past few weeks, a variety of gameplay videos have gone up, including demonstrations of the awesome NBA Jam: Legends On Fire Edition mod for NBA Jam: On Fire Edition. There are highlights from Parsec sessions, including games of NBA Live 2003 and NBA Playgrounds. NBA Live 2000 and NBA Action ’95 also make an appearance along with NBA Live 95 PC, and an alley-oop reel from my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER.

You can also find highlights from our NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament that Dee is hosting. I’ll be posting the latest videos in a separate bulletin along with an update following the conclusion of the Final Four, but for now, you can find them all in this playlist. There’s also the weekly Top 10 Plays curated by Dee, the NLSC Podcast, and plenty more, so be sure to subscribe to our channel! As always, please feel free to suggest any basketball games that you’d like to see us play. In the meantime, enjoy our latest uploads!

As you can tell from the thumbnail, a modded-in Super Mario appears in this week’s NLSC Top 10 plays; only appropriate, given that the new film is out! johnz1’s NBA Jam: Legends On Fire Edition is another mod that’s on display, with Michael Jordan throwing down a signature slam. There’s a highlight from our NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament – also hosted by Dee – and of course, another dazzling array of devastating dunks to enjoy. A total of nine different games are featured this week, and it’s always fun to see such variety in the countdown. Let’s get to the action!

The Friday Five: 5 Intriguing Ideas That Sadly Wouldn’t Work

The Friday Five: 5 Intriguing Ideas That Sadly Wouldn't Work

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five lists five intriguing ideas that are sadly unlikely to work in practice.

If you glance back at Wishlists over the years, it’s fair to say that we’ve all had some great ideas for the basketball games we enjoy. I don’t want to sell the developers short either, as many of them are likewise creative and passionate basketball fans with an eye for detail, and they’ve come up with ideas that we’ve never thought of. Not all ideas are feasible of course, but imagination has allowed the genre to continually innovate and expand far beyond the earliest classics. It pays to think big, and then work out what is and isn’t possible, and how the possible can be implemented.

Of course, some ideas are technically possible, but nevertheless impractical. They’re great concepts and potentially useful features, but implementing them simply wouldn’t be a good move. There might be a major drawback that would make an idea divisive, and detract from the experience if it’s not optional. An idea may seem like a great solution on paper, but would be too reliant on goodwill and the honour system in order to work effectively. That’s not to say that all of these ideas absolutely couldn’t ever work, but sadly I don’t think they would without closing a bunch of loopholes and detoxifying the userbase, particularly online. They’re intriguing, but unfeasible.

Obviously, a lot of sites love to run joke articles and other such gags for April Fool’s Day, so you’d be forgiven for thinking something might be screwy with this week’s NLSC Top 10 Plays. I can promise you that isn’t the case; not because we don’t like fun, but because we don’t want to take any attention away from the awesome highlights that the community continues to send in! There’s a little bit of everything from six different titles this week, including a great two-way play from our NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament, jaw-dropping dunks, and cold-blooded play in the clutch. The Friday Five: 5 Players Who Only Appeared on Certain Teams in Games (Part 10)

The Friday Five: 5 Players Who Only Appeared on Certain Teams in Games (Part 10)

Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. This week’s Five is Part 10 in an ongoing series looking at players who only appeared on certain teams in video games.

When I posted my first list of players who only appeared on certain teams in games – or “phantom stints”, as I really should’ve called it – I didn’t realise that it would turn into a series with ten parts and counting! I thought I’d discovered some rather unique examples while dusting off games for Wayback Wednesday features and my own retro gaming sessions, but the names kept on coming. Once I reached the seventh instalment, I believed that I’d covered all of the examples who were noteworthy names. David L quickly proved me wrong, though!

As such, this series continues, and there are some more examples that I’ll be getting to beyond today’s feature. Once again, these phantom stints occur for the same basic reason: a player’s tenure with a team is more or less on paper only since they never officially tally a minute in real life, but because the stint is represented in at least one video game, it can actually play out on the virtual hardwood. Whether it’s due to leaving soon after a transaction that’s included in the default rosters or an official update, an injury lasting their entire tenure, or a trade or signing that was nullified, a number of players end up only appearing on certain teams in basketball video games.

Wayback Wednesday: No Portrait Available

Wayback Wednesday: No Portrait Available

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at the “No Portrait Available” placeholders that are a staple of old basketball video games.

Beyond obvious examples such as dated graphics, fewer modes, and less bonus content, there are some hallmarks that immediately identify basketball video games as old school. They are the approaches and design choices that modern games eschew, either because they’re no longer necessary, or newer technology facilitates preferable solutions. These days, you’d never see a Free Agents Pool that’s limited to the same number of players as a regular team. No active players will be represented by Roster Players, since the entire league is covered by the current licensing agreement.

That brings us to another staple of old games that we no longer see: a generic portrait for players who are missing a proper one. If you’ve been playing basketball games for a long time, these players with no available portrait will be part of the nostalgia that you feel for old favourites, whether it’s the approach in general or some more specific examples. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look back…way back…

NLSC Podcast #470: Quality Time on the Virtual Hardwood

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #470 of the NLSC Podcast!

Which basketball video games rank among our most-played all-time? This week, we join the community in reminiscing about the various titles that we’ve racked up the most hours in over the years. We’re also able to talk about the NBA Jam: Legends On Fire Edition mod at last, and it’s no surprise that the community shares our enthusiasm for it! johnz1 will also be joining us to talk about the mod next week, so stay tuned. The Elite 8 of our NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament is in the books, so we reflect on the action thus far, and look ahead to the Final Four. We also pay tribute to the late, great Willis Reed.

Monday Tip-Off: Is It Me, Or The Games?

Monday Tip-Off: Is It Me, Or The Games?

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some reflections on whether some of my complaints about basketball video games are on me, or the games themselves.

I’ve been playing basketball video games since the 90s, becoming a part of the online community – then largely centred on NBA Live – towards the end of the decade. As you may or may not know, I started out with my own NBA Live fansite – the NBA Live Domain – not long after I discovered the NLSC and modding, and decided to get involved with the scene. I took over the NLSC in August of 2001, a couple of months before turning 17. At times it’s somewhat overwhelming to reflect on the passage of time, but it has indeed been more than two decades since I started this journey!

What does this mean? Well, I’m sure that some people would have unflattering things to say about me still being a content creator for basketball video games in my thirties, but we needn’t concern ourselves with mean-spirited remarks from small minds with an axe to grind. With that being said, it is true that after all these years and all the different games I’ve played, I am now in the upper end of the demographic. As an Elder Millennial, I’m in a weird place where I’m simultaneously a terrible young person and a bitter old head, depending on your generation relative to mine. I may be a little of both, and so sometimes I wonder where the problem lies when I have gripes.

As this year’s March Madness rolls on, brackets being busted all around, it only makes sense that we have some more virtual collegiate highlights! You’ll find spectacular moments from our NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament, as well as Coach K College Basketball. Elsewhere, johnz1 provided a gamewinner from NBA Jam: On Fire Edition (on top of a legendary mod for the game earlier this week). Those highlights, along with seven other exciting ones, make up another great NLSC Top 10 Plays! Six different basketball video games are represented this week, once again spotlighting the variety that our community enjoys so much.

Monday Tip-Off: Wish I Could Play It, Now That I Can’t

Monday Tip-Off: Wish I Could Play It, Now That I Can't

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some reflections on wishing that I could play certain modes in older titles, now that it’s impossible.

The notion that we want what we can’t have, and that we don’t appreciate what we do have until it’s gone, are very old proverbs indeed. It’s a concept that’s been discussed at length, and portrayed in various works. In a rather infamous episode of Scrubs, J.D. discovers that he doesn’t want to be with Elliot after pining for her all season. Glam metal band Cinderella even had a power ballad literally titled “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)“, which was used rather superbly – even movingly – in an episode of South Park. It’s a sentiment that we can all relate to.

As far as basketball video games are concerned, this is an inevitable part of server shutdowns. There was a time when that only applied to online multiplayer, but thanks to server-side content and connected experiences, single player modes are now also affected. Of course, there’s still plenty to enjoy in older basketball games, especially when you go back to before online content was ubiquitous. Over the past generation though, and even going back to the generation before that, there are modes that I wish I could still play. On top of that, there are modes that I wish I could play for the first time – or at least finally explore in-depth – now that that’s no longer possible.

NLSC Podcast #469: March Madness in Video Games

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #469 of the NLSC Podcast!

With March Madness underway, there’s no better time to talk about college basketball video games! This week, we’re joining the community in reflecting on our history with NCAA on the virtual hardwood, listing some of our all-time favourite college basketball titles, as well as a couple of regional variants. We also provide an update on the latest action and results from our NCAA Basketball 10 Parsec Tournament, and discuss plans for some College Slam content. Revisiting the possibility of college basketball video games some day making a return, we wonder whether an NCAA title would be EA Sports’ ticket back into the basketball gaming space, or if Visual Concepts would just swoop in and steal their thunder once again.
