Dumb Mondays: NBA Live Won June 5th

This is Dumb Mondays, starting the workweek off with silly facts or some of my opinions and predictions that you may or may not find interesting. This week I am sharing a dumb opinion and will be looking for and responding to your comments throughout the week.

Let the 2014 hype train begin! Going into E3 we finally got our first tastes of NBA 2K15 and NBA Live 15 with both games releasing something on the first day of the NBA Finals. NBA 2K15 teased and dropped a video on us, and NBA Live 15 went with another Open Letter from Sean O’Brien. Both directly and indirectly stated the directions or themes of the upcoming games and started their hype trains in different ways. So why do I feel like NBA Live 15’s open letter got me more excited for that game than NBA 2K15’s fantastic spot with Kevin Durant and popular NBA 2K Youtubers?

Dumb Mondays: Free to Wait in NBA Games?

This is Dumb Mondays, starting the workweek off with silly facts or some of my opinions and predictions that you may or may not find interesting. This week I am sharing a dumb opinion and will be looking for and responding to your comments throughout the week.

If you haven’t heard of Jim Sterling’s webshow the Jimquisition, I would highly recommend checking it out for his comments on the video game industry. A few months ago he covered the topic of what he dubbed ‘Free to Wait‘ games. These are the games we see a lot of on mobile platforms, where gameplay is halted due to a timer that you can pay real or virtual currencies to speed up. These mechanics have been legitimized simply because the base game is free, but what if this terrible thing started showing up in our annual NBA games?

No Dumb Monday or Tuesday Triple This Week

Due to dumb excuses, I was unable to make time to write my weekly articles. I was thinking of doing a late release but I think just waiting until next week is the better option.

To make up for the lack of articles, I guess I can mention one little Dumb Fact. With the hiring of bedwardsroy19, he joins Leftos as the latest NBA video game community member to be hired by 2K. bedwardsroy19 and Leftos, coincidently or not, are the only 2 community members I have had the opportunity to chat with (about NBA games) on my YouTube Channel; including the PC Meets PS3 series using bedwardsroy19’s rosters and many other videos with Leftos. So if you want a job at 2K, let me know when you want to talk NBA video games on my channel, heh.

So I hope you enjoyed that Dumb Fact, thanks for understanding the lack of articles this week. Feel free to check out past weeks’ entries using the Features dropdown above, have a great week!

Dumb Mondays: NBA Video Games Are Unlucky

This is Dumb Mondays, starting the workweek off with silly facts or some of my opinions and predictions that you may or may not find interesting. This week I am sharing a dumb opinion and will be looking for and responding to your comments throughout the week.

The biggest video game convention of the year is just around the corner with E3 beginning in about three weeks. We might get a trailer, maybe an off-screen sneak peak, but usually the NBA video games at E3 get nothing more than some marketing buzzwords for features and a general idea of which direction this year’s game will be headed. Going into the second year of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases for NBA 2K15 and NBA Live 15 I am again hoping for more than basic information, but I’m not expecting anything special. It did give me a dumb idea though, maybe NBA video games are a bit unlucky in comparison to other video games, such as the ones at echeck casino sites.

Dumb Mondays: Fantasy Modes Are Ruining NBA Games

This is Dumb Mondays, starting the workweek off with silly facts or some of my opinions and predictions that you may or may not find interesting. This week I am sharing a dumb opinion and will be looking for and responding to your comments throughout the week.

I honestly do not know if Fantasy Mode is the correct classification for EA Sports’ Ultimate Team and NBA 2K’s MyTEAM, but that is what I am going with. Technically any mode that has user input beyond the current rosters can be considered a fantasy mode but I think that these card collecting (damn, that is a good way to describe it too) modes are ruining our yearly basketball video games.

Dumb Mondays: Predictions for NBA 2K15 & NBA Live 15

The dumb idea behind Dumb Fact Monday is that I would have enough mildly interesting facts to release articles week after week. Unfortunately the well is almost dry, so I have decided to change the format up going forward. This is Dumb Mondays, starting the workweek off with facts, opinions, predictions, or any other topic that you may or may not find interesting.

Every year I make a fool of myself trying to predict what the upcoming basketball video games will feature. Now that we have preorders available for NBA 2K15, I realized I needed to get my predictions out there before any information is revealed. As I said, historically this has been a complete blunder in itself. I expected anything good from Live 08 PC, a TNT license in NBA 2K12, The Crib in NBA 2K13, and that we would have “Jaw-Dropping” graphics in NBA Live 14. So, let’s see how embarrassing this year will be for me as we near the reveals for NBA 2K15 and NBA Live 15.

Dumb Fact Monday: Obama in NBA 2K Games

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

President Obama showing up in NBA 2K video games is something, I at least hope, most of us know about. 2K Sports touted his cameo when he debuted NBA 2K11’s Association Mode, showing up in a series of photo-op images with that year’s virtual NBA Champions. It is a great presentation addition, even if he continues to show up years after 2016. Since those photo-ops are rendered in-game, that means Obama has a cyberface file on-disc, which of course begs for unofficial mods, and even Obama getting into coaching with a bug in NBA 2K12.

Dumb Fact Monday: 2K’s Hidden Players

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

There is no doubt that the biggest advantage to playing the PC version of our annual basketball video games is to customize our experiences to our liking. We can play on new street courts, make the game overly arcadey, or pour hours into fixing issues with the game. A key component to most of these advantages is our ability to view and edit the rosters and other save files of these games. While the main purpose of editing may be to do something else, I have previously covered that it is easy to stumble upon unused content with the PC version of these games, and the game’s roster is no different. Let’s take a look at some of the hidden players located in 2K’s Official updates.

Dumb Fact Monday: March Madness 2003

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interestingt.

Aside from having the best worst cover of any basketball video game, NCAA March Madness 2003 was one of the most innovative and groundbreaking games for EA Sports. This is a game that I have talked up in the past, at nauseum, to anyone who was unfortunate enough to let me talk about the game, and I probably put a few people to sleep with a Podcast ramble that I have forgotten. Next to NBA Live 2003, it was one of the first simulation basketball video games I really got into, but this goes far beyond nostalgic exaggeration. Find out why by clicking to Read More, there are GFYs, too.

Dumb Fact Monday: Mystery Warriors Uniform

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

The uniform selections in our yearly basketball video game releases usually stick with uniforms seen that year in the real NBA. NBA 2K games generally have more retro uniforms from years past, but NBA Live has included some odd uniform choices in its past such as the Original Celtics uniform in older NBA Live games. While NBA Live 14 seems to keep its uniform selection as limited as the offerings seen this season in the NBA, NBA Live 09 and NBA Live 10 included a strange fictional Golden State Warriors uniform that was never worn in the real life NBA.

Dumb Fact Monday: Extra Year of Roster Updates

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

I think we can all agree that the biggest downfall of not only basketball video games, but all sport video games, is that they become obsolete after only one year of relevance. Usually the game’s users will get one final roster update after the NBA Finals are finished to remove any injuries in the roster, but if you want to play with the newest rookies a community created roster is normally your only choice. However, there were two simulation basketball video games that did receive official roster updates one full year after their release year.

Dunk Fact Monday: Blacktop Mode’s Glory Days

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

I will admit that I am a bit of a Blacktop Mode fan. Like I have said in previous articles and weekly in the NLSC Podcast, I enjoy simple pickup and play fun when I don’t have the time or interest to dedicate to a full game with NBA teams. Unfortunately my favorite mode is but a shadow of it’s former glory, so what made it so good in the first place?

Dumb Fact Monday: Exporting Draft Classes

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

For most Association and MyGM players, an accurate draft class for the upcoming year is required to get the most of out the mode. While EA and 2K’s player generator can create some special characters, I feel that the ability to export a draft class from 2K’s College Hoops series is sorely missed in comparison. The best way to care about these generated draftees is by playing with or against them during their non-professional career. PC mods can help alleviate this missed feature, but no matter how much work goes into the accuracy of those mods they simply can not touch College Hoops 2K8. The ability to export and import draft classes from the college game into the NBA game was pretty well known for 2K basketball games, but do you know which EA basketball games supported this feature?

Dumb Fact Monday: NBA 2K14 Patching

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

I take pride in how our yearly tutorials forum takes shape each year, but this year I feel I have slacked off by not updating many resources for NBA 2K14. Instead of writing a Dumb Fact Monday article, I spent the time I set aside for this article updating the File Structure Resource; which is key for understanding what each file’s purpose is within NBA 2K14. Grouped with my extensive Video Tutorial Thread and the other great Tutorials we have in our forums, I think anyone should be able to jump into NBA 2K14 modding with a decent knowledge base to reference. If you have any basic or advanced patching questions, please make a new thread in our Patching Help & Requests Forum after checking out these resources.

If you are not looking to get into NBA 2K14 patching and just wanted a dumb fact for the week, I apologize. Check back next week for a proper entry for this series.

Dumb Fact Monday: NCAA Stadiums in an NBA Game

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

One of my favorite things about getting the PC version of our yearly NBA games is to see what hidden or unused content got left on the game disc. Sometimes there is nothing useful, but NBA 2K10 provided the community with a bunch of hidden files that, along with the initial release of REDitor, kickstarted NBA 2K modding on PC. Hidden in the thousands of game files were a few college gyms that had no business showing up in the yearly NBA 2K game.
