Dumb Fact Monday: NBA 2K14 Patching

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

I take pride in how our yearly tutorials forum takes shape each year, but this year I feel I have slacked off by not updating many resources for NBA 2K14. Instead of writing a Dumb Fact Monday article, I spent the time I set aside for this article updating the File Structure Resource; which is key for understanding what each file’s purpose is within NBA 2K14. Grouped with my extensive Video Tutorial Thread and the other great Tutorials we have in our forums, I think anyone should be able to jump into NBA 2K14 modding with a decent knowledge base to reference. If you have any basic or advanced patching questions, please make a new thread in our Patching Help & Requests Forum after checking out these resources.

If you are not looking to get into NBA 2K14 patching and just wanted a dumb fact for the week, I apologize. Check back next week for a proper entry for this series.

The Friday Five: My Top 5 BIG Moments in NBA Live 14 (So Far)

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

One of my favourite features in NBA Live 14 is LIVE Season’s BIG Moments. For the uninitiated, BIG Moments allows you to replay significant moments from the 2013/2014 NBA season, ranging from just a few seconds to an entire half of gameplay. As gamewinning shots and memorable performances occur in real life, we see them appear as challenges in NBA Live 14.

As I noted on the NLSC’s Facebook and Twitter, Gerald Green’s career game in the Phoenix Suns’ big win over the Oklahoma City Thunder yesterday seems like a good candidate to appear as a BIG Moment in NBA Live 14. That got me thinking about some of my favourite BIG Moments thus far, which ultimately resulted in a countdown for this week’s Friday Five. So, without any further ado, here are my Top 5 BIG Moments in NBA Live 14…at least to this point.

The Tuesday Triple: How 2K and Live Switched Places

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

With the return of competitive releases in the simulation basketball video game genre, we can once again take part in the age-old tradition of comparing and contrasting the main two NBA games against each other. While NBA Live 14 still plays like an NBA Live game, and NBA 2K14 is still very much a stereotypical NBA 2K game, I have noticed some old complaints from years ago that have seemingly swapped sides. While there are certainly more important compliments and criticisms that can be given to each game, lets take a look at some that have been traded between the competing franchises.

Dumb Fact Monday: NCAA Stadiums in an NBA Game

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

One of my favorite things about getting the PC version of our yearly NBA games is to see what hidden or unused content got left on the game disc. Sometimes there is nothing useful, but NBA 2K10 provided the community with a bunch of hidden files that, along with the initial release of REDitor, kickstarted NBA 2K modding on PC. Hidden in the thousands of game files were a few college gyms that had no business showing up in the yearly NBA 2K game.

The Friday Five: 5 Best Things in NBA Live 14’s Dynasty Mode

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

As I’ve mentioned several times before, I’m a huge fan of Dynasty Mode, as it’s been my game mode of choice in NBA Live since it was implemented as Franchise Mode way back in NBA Live 2000. Before the game came out last year, I talked about the things that I wanted to see in NBA Live 14’s Dynasty Mode, though I did temper my expectations somewhat as I knew there was much to focus on as the development team looked to relaunch the series.

As it turns out however, I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised by what Dynasty Mode has on offer in NBA Live 14. While there are still improvements to be made, features to be added and elements to be tweaked, the mode has returned fairly well-rounded and with some pleasing additions. As such, this week I’m listing the five best things in NBA Live 14’s Dynasty Mode.

The Tuesday Triple: Favorite MomentousCeltic Mixes

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

If I had to create my own Mount Rushmore of those who influenced me in this community, it would probably be DahlpdubLeftos, and MomentousCeltic (a.k.a. IsoAchieved a.k.a. eDotd). The first three got me into modding and expanded my abilities throughout my years at the NLSC. MC’s influence was broader. MC’s mixes marked the first time I was able to appreciate what NBA 2K offered in their game. Call it EA or PC fanboyism, but before MC made mixes with NBA 2K7 I simply didn’t get what all the fuss was about with the 2K series. Seeing a skilled player continually showcase the game in such an awe-inspiring way changed that for me, well before the series hit PC. So kick back and enjoy the following mixes created by the master himself, MomentousCeltic.

Dumb Fact Monday: Playing Under the Moon

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

While I am talking about playing underneath the Moon in a basketball videogame, for once I am not talking about anything Street related. This may or may not have affected me, because this week’s Dumb Fact Monday has completely confused me. I have no idea why this is in the game or if it is even on purpose. After researching it, I don’t believe this is grounded in any sort of reality or included for accuracy purposes. So please share in my confusion.

NLSC Bloopers: Take 1

In addition to compiling countdowns of the community’s best plays in the NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week, Arcane has also been collecting some of our strangest and funniest moments in order to create a blooper reel. Defensive lapses, layups and jumpshots that are missed rather embarrassingly, passes gone awry, players fumbling the ball over and over…it happens in the real NBA, so it’s fun to see it happen in NBA Live 14 and NBA 2K14 as well.

Check out NLSC Bloopers: Take 1 below, or watch it here over on YouTube if you can’t see the embedded video. Don’t forget to share your best plays and bloopers in this thread in The Virtual Hardwood section of the Forum, and be sure to catch the latest Top 10 Plays if you missed it last week.

NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week – February 22nd

Welcome to the NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week for February 22nd, 2014! This is a weekly feature where the community submits their best highlight videos from NBA Live and NBA 2K, with Arcane selecting the ten best videos for a Top 10 countdown.

The Top 10 is a little late this week as Arcane unfortunately had some computer trouble, but it’s out now and I’m sure you’ll agree that it was worth the wait. This week it’s all about the dunks, as the latest Top 10 features an assortment of spectacular slams and alley-oops. Watch it below or check it out here on YouTube if can’t see the embedded video. For your chance to be featured in the next edition of the NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week, please see this thread.

The Friday Five: 5 Things I Want To See In NBA Live 15

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

As you may have heard in our chat with NBA Live 14 Gameplay Designer Scott O’Gallagher, the NBA Live development team at EA Tiburon is eager to get our feedback on the current game and the official patch, as well as our ideas and suggestions for NBA Live 15. As such, we’ll be compiling our NBA Live 15 Wishlist very soon.

I’ll be going into more detail when I create our official NBA Live 15 Wishlist thread in the NLSC Forum, but since Scott and the rest of the developers are interested in hearing each of our top five to ten suggestions for the game, I thought I’d use this week’s Friday Five to get the ball rolling and briefly talk about some improvements for the next NBA Live. Without any further ado, here are five things I want to see in NBA Live 15.

The Tuesday Triple: 2014 Basketball Game Reviews

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

Even though Andrew does a great job reviewing basketball games for the NLSC, I have never felt that any review of a basketball videogame would ever truly apply to me. At the same time, I’ve always felt my opinions on these games are so skewed that any recommendations I could make on my experiences with a game wouldn’t apply to anyone else. So, now that I have this lovely weekly feature to write, I figured I’d give it a shot and write quick reviews for my main 3 basketball games this year. NBA 2K14 on PC, NBA Live 14 on PS4, and NBA 2K14 on PS4.

Dumb Fact Monday: Playable Jay-Z

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

It seems like only recently that we were all complaining about the gold swirls and menu equalizers in NBA 2K13, probably because it was only last year. Executively produced by Jay-Z, NBA 2K13 gained criticism for the presentation elements that were supposedly designed by the man himself. 2K themselves claimed that Jay-Z had his fingerprints all over the game, and articles came out about Jay-Z using his star power to get Scottie Pippen and Charles Barkley in last year’s game for the Team USA vs Dream Team hype. Aside from the presentation elements and his name on the box, Jay-Z was not included in the game’s celebrity team and was only shown in videogame form in the crowd of Net games.

The Friday Five: 5 Dunks From NBA Live the Real Dunk Contest Needs

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

Since the 2014 All-Star Weekend in New Orleans is upon us, I feel it’s only right that this week’s Friday Five covers a topic related to the NBA’s midseason classic. Since I talked about the things that I believe the dunk contest needs as well as my five favourite All-Star Weekends in the lead up to last year’s All-Star Weekend, this year I thought I’d mix things up a bit with a topic that combines video games and real life.

The addition of the All-Star Weekend in NBA Live 2005 was a definite highlight in the NBA Live series, finally bringing an often requested and long awaited mode to the game. The dunk contest that was featured from NBA Live 2005 through NBA Live 09 included some crazy slams; a few of them were a little out there, but others could feasibly be pulled off in real life. This week, I’m listing five dunks from NBA Live’s Slam Dunk Contest that I’d like to see broken out in the real competition.
