NLSC Podcast #478: Highlights, Rumours, & Regrets

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #478 of the NLSC Podcast!

Games that we wish we played more, seasons that we wish we finished, and saves that we wish we still had, are common tales among basketball gamers. This week, we join the community in reminiscing about some of our biggest basketball gaming regrets! A misconception about a job listing also prompts us to address the subject of NBA Live rumours, as well as clickbait content. Additionally, we touch on whether a theoretical future NBA Live should be sim, arcade, or a sim-arcade hybrid. We also reflect on some spectacular highlights in last week’s NLSC Top 10 that had us all buzzing, and provide an update on reaching Year 6 in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER.

NLSC Podcast #472: A Deep Dive Into NBA Action ’95

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #472 of the NLSC Podcast!

NBA Action ’95 for the Sega Genesis was a game ahead of its time, yet it’s often overlooked compared to other 90s hoops titles. As such, we’re making it the subject of a deep dive this week, from its gameplay to its historical content to the interesting history of the NBA Action series. A listener question also prompts us to compare the NBA Playgrounds games to NBA Jam: On Fire Edition; do Saber’s games hold a candle to EA Sports’ second (and to date, final) NBA Jam release? We also catch up on the latest from Year 5 in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, and some other fun happenings around the community, including the 100th edition of the Top 10.

Monday Tip-Off: Finishing The Drive for Five

Monday Tip-Off: Finishing The Drive for Five

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with a recap of my Drive for Five in Year 5 of my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER.

At this point, my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER is well beyond being just a kick. It’s become one of my all-time favourite basketball gaming experiences, and a staple of my rotation on the virtual hardwood. Even though I enjoyed NBA 2K23 far more than NBA 2K21 and NBA 2K22, it couldn’t replace NBA 2K14 for PlayStation 4 as the star of my lineup. And honestly, why should it? While I do consider NBA 2K23 to be the strongest release in the last few years, if I’m enjoying an older title even more, there’s no reason to put it aside just because it isn’t the latest game.

Year 5 proved to be another captivating journey. As I’ve said before, I’ve greatly enjoyed how each season in this NBA 2K14 MyCAREER has ended up telling its own story, even if they’ve ultimately culminated with a similar ending. To that point, though every season has ended with my player celebrating a championship, the road to that destination veered off into different routes that were all fun to travel. While the numbers may suggest otherwise, the Drive for Five actually stands as one of the most challenging seasons so far in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER. It demonstrates the value of playing through multiple seasons, and experiencing an ongoing alternate reality.

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: ’86 Bulls vs ’86 Celtics

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: '86 Bulls vs '86 Celtics

Last time in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series, I played a matchup between the ’93 Bulls and ’93 Hornets. I’m sticking with my favourite team and player for this latest instalment, this time flashing back to 1986 with a showdown between a young Michael Jordan and Larry Bird’s Celtics.

This matchup is of course the one that produced MJ’s 63-point game in the first round of the 1986 Playoffs, a record that still stands today. The Bulls were nevertheless outmatched by the eventual champions, being swept in the series. Even though the aim of the NBA 2K14 Retro Series is to portray actual historical matchups, I will take liberties here and there, especially as I’m always aiming to win the games. Something that is definitely true to life here is MJ racking up buckets with an array of aerial moves and midrange jumpers, and you’ll certainly see that in this highlight reel. The game came down to the wire, much as his 63-point game did. Will history be re-written here? Watch to find out!

As always, a reminder that Dee and I are regularly uploading highlight reels and other video features to the NLSC’s YouTube channel, so be sure to subscribe for more basketball gaming content!

MyLEAGUE & MyCAREER Highlights

MyLEAGUE & MyCAREER Highlights

As Dee and I discussed in Episode #464 of the NLSC Podcast, we’ve been keeping busy playing through seasons on the virtual hardwood. To that end, Dee has uploaded highlights from his NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE with Stildo33, while I’ve shared a reel from a game in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER

Dee’s video features him using the Miami Heat to take on Stildo33 and the Orlando Magic. The pair are playing through a season using the 1995 mod for NBA 2K19, which is available to download here. For those who are unaware, Stildo33 is using the Magic while Dee is helming the SuperSonics, and they take turns playing as each other’s opponent throughout the season. The latest reel of highlights from their NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE features some fantastic dunks by Harold “Baby Jordan” Miner, and a young Shaquille O’Neal likewise punishing the rim.

In my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, I’ve recently stepped up my scoring thanks to Terry Hanson and Carmelo Anthony being out due to injury. It resulted in a 112-point effort – the most points I’ve scored in that particular MyCAREER game – which also produced some memorable highlights. Check out those NBA 2K19 MyLEAGUE and NBA 2K14 MyCAREER highlights below!

While I do post bulletins about our videos here on the NLSC, you can obviously keep up to date with them by subscribing to our YouTube channel! We’ll be uploading regular videos throughout 2023, from gameplay highlights and stories to Wayback Wednesday retrospectives to essays and commentary. As always, feel free to suggest games for us to play over Parsec, and we’ll be sure to share the highlights!

LeBron & Kobe Team Up?!?

LeBron & Kobe Team Up?!?

It’s time to share another story from my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER! Previously, I’ve told stories about humorous generated player tattoos, and profiled Terry Hanson and Elden Jennings. Today, I’m recounting how the 2014 offseason saw LeBron James and Kobe Bryant team up in Los Angeles.

As I noted earlier this week, LeBron vs. Kobe was an NBA Finals matchup that was highly anticipated, but never came to pass. Around the same time, a Kobe for LeBron trade was discussed, which turned into a counteroffer that would’ve seen the two all-time greats become teammates. It’s been interesting to see this “What If” scenario actually play out in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, where the AI is obviously responsible for all of the player movement. Mind you, it hasn’t been going as smoothly as the virtual Lakers would’ve hoped.

Seeing LeBron and Kobe team up is a great example of why it’s a blast to play multiple seasons in franchise and career modes. I’m actually hoping that virtual Kobe changes his mind about retiring and sticks around for at least one more year, just to see how it adds to the ongoing saga. In the meantime, I’ll be sharing more stories from my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, so please subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel! Dee and I will have plenty more basketball gaming content throughout 2023 and beyond, so join us as we celebrate the fun we’re having on the virtual hardwood.

Elden Jennings, The 5’9″ Dynamo!

Elden Jennings, The 5'9" Dynamo!

Although Terry Hanson is undoubtedly a Virtual Hardwood Legend and one of my all-time favourite teammates, he isn’t the only player of interest in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER. Other teams have noteworthy generated players too, such as the one I’m profiling today: the Washington Wizards’ Elden Jennings.

Despite standing only 5’9″, this former Nebraska Cornhusker is a force to be reckoned with. He may not get a ton of minutes behind All-Star point guard John Wall, but he undoubtedly makes the most of his limited court time! As you’ll see, Jennings is absolutely fearless when he gets into the lane, despite his small stature. Given his production Per 36, he may well become the best player under six feet in NBA history – at least on the virtual hardwood – if he ever gets a sustained opportunity for more minutes.

Stay tuned for more NBA 2K14 MyCAREER Stories! As for my story topic in the NLSC Forum, hopefully Elden Jennings will become a recurring character as a worthy opponent, no matter where his career takes him. Shout out to Dee once again for smoothing out and remastering some old clips that were captured at 30 FPS, for use in this feature. Monday Tip-Off: NBA 2K14 MyCAREER Nicknames

Monday Tip-Off: NBA 2K14 MyCAREER Nicknames

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with a breakdown of the nicknames that I’ve given to generated players in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER.

As I’ve previously discussed, I greatly enjoy generated rookies in franchise and career modes. Obviously it’s vital that we have the option of inserting real Draft Classes into our game if we so choose, but fictional prospects have always been more appealing to me. That may sound strange given that I prefer to play with real rosters, but I enjoy how generated rookies encourage us to use our imagination as a fictional NBA takes shape. Even if I could use custom Draft Classes with real prospects in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, I’d have to pass on that, as it would mean no Terry Hanson!

Although Terry Hanson is my favourite generated player – naturally, since he’s my teammate on the Philadelphia 76ers – there are some other fictional players who are adding personality to the league. Some of them are already shaping up to be star players, which makes the matchups fresh and interesting five years in. There are also some fun name combinations, and unique generated appearances. This has led me to give nicknames to some of those fictional players in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER as I’ve encountered them in gameplay, or in the roster listings. It’s a fun exercise that’s added to the immersion, and set some of them up to be Virtual Hardwood Legends.
