NLSC Podcast #485: NBA 2K24 Preview Season Tips Off

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #485 of the NLSC Podcast!

The NBA 2K24 preview season is officially underway, with the reveal of this year’s cover players and a few interesting tidbits that have the community buzzing. To that end, we break down and react to everything we know so far. That also includes confirmation that the PC version will be a prior gen port once again, which has naturally drawn some strong reactions! Speaking of reactions, one of Dee’s Tweets about NBA 2K14 Next Gen really resonated with the community, demonstrating how it’s still held in extremely high regard. We share that sentiment, especially after a co-op session that earned the game a place in our Parsec rotation! We also touch on devious practices, and the latest ridiculous comments from online cheesers.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! NBA 2K14 Highlights: Bulls vs. Magic

NBA 2K14 Highlights: Bulls vs. Magic

Thanks to a combination of Parsec and the Xbox App, Dee and I have further expanded the range of basketball video games that we can connect on to play.  This past weekend, Dee hosted a session of NBA 2K14 for Xbox One, and put together the highlights for our YouTube channel.

The reel is from a co-op game in which we took on the Orlando Magic with the Chicago Bulls. As you can see, our aim was to emulate the style of play of the 2014 Bulls, and use the players to their real strengths, while obviously having a blast and producing highlights. You’ll see Derrick Rose doing D-Rose things, Joakim Noah contributing everywhere with great energy, and a young Jimmy Butler demonstrating flashes of brilliance. As sim gamers, we pride ourselves in playing a realistic style, and assembling highlight reels that are fun to watch. Check it out!

We discussed our game of NBA 2K14 and our satisfaction with the highlights it produced in this week’s NLSC Podcast, which will be out soon. Stay tuned for that, and in the meantime, be sure to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel for more basketball gaming content! As always, feel free to hit us up with suggestions of any games that you’d like to see us play, and we’ll do our best to get them into the rotation.

NBA 2K14 Highlights: Heat vs. Nuggets

NBA 2K14 Highlights: Heat vs. Nuggets

Obviously, I’ve been obsessed with NBA 2K14 as a retro basketball gaming experience for a couple of years now, but I’m not the only one enjoying the milestone game! Dee connected with community member Wiscard_Rush to play a game of NBA 2K14 using Parsec and the new Xbox app, and shared the highlights on our YouTube channel.

As these highlights demonstrate, NBA 2K14 is a release that has stood the test of time. Going on ten years later, it’s impossible not to marvel at what the Eco-Motion engine did for animations and player movement. That’s on display in this reel, via emphatic dunks from LeBron James and Kenneth Faried, steals that look and feel organic, and slick moves by players on both sides. The fantastic lighting of the Xbox One/PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K14 is also on display, and it’s clear just how much fun the guys are having with the game. Check it out!

As always, I encourage you to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel if you haven’t already! We’re frequently uploading a variety of basketball gaming content, which is an initiative that Dee has been spearheading with the Top 10 Plays of the Week and other highlights. Also feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play, or connect with others in the community to play. Don’t forget to share any highlights and experiences in the Forum, and be sure to join us over on Discord as well.

NLSC Podcast #481: When To Bench A Basketball Game

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #481 of the NLSC Podcast!

How long does the allure of the latest basketball game last? How often does it hold our attention until the next game comes out? This week, we’re joining the community in discussing when and why we’ve chosen to move on from the current release in recent years. We also follow up on last week’s look back at NBA Live 15 by revisiting the even more controversial NBA Live 14. Suffice to say, we were once again surprised by some of the details that we noticed! Naturally we draw a few comparisons to NBA 2K14, which we also continue to enjoy with Year 6 of MyCAREER, and a Legends season in MyGM.

NBA 2K14 MyCAREER Highlights: Year 6, Games 1-10

NBA 2K14 MyCAREER Highlights: Year 6, Games 1-10

Although I took a short break after completing the Drive for Five in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, I’ve picked it up again and Year 6 is underway! At Dee’s suggestion, I’ll be compiling reels of the best moments and periodically sharing them as I play through the season. To that end, here are the highlights from Games 1-10 in Year 6 of my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER!

Terry Hanson is back in action after missing almost the entire 2018 season with a knee injury. As you’ll see, I’ve made it a point to hit him with alley-oops as often as possible! He’s not the only player that I’m looking for as I run the point and rack up assists, as Tony Wroten has been providing some highflying highlights off the bench. Having equipped several flashy dunk packages, I’m also prone to getting in on throwing it down in spectacular fashion; MyCAREER is a fantasy mode, after all! You’ll also find a couple of nifty passes from Michael Carter-Williams. Check out the fun I’ve been having so far in Year 6!

I’ll be posting more highlights from Year 6 of my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER every ten games or so. You can also keep up with the results (and some creative writing endeavours) in my story topic in the NLSC Forum. Be sure to subscribe to the NLSC YouTube channel for more great basketball gaming content!

NLSC Podcast #478: Highlights, Rumours, & Regrets

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #478 of the NLSC Podcast!

Games that we wish we played more, seasons that we wish we finished, and saves that we wish we still had, are common tales among basketball gamers. This week, we join the community in reminiscing about some of our biggest basketball gaming regrets! A misconception about a job listing also prompts us to address the subject of NBA Live rumours, as well as clickbait content. Additionally, we touch on whether a theoretical future NBA Live should be sim, arcade, or a sim-arcade hybrid. We also reflect on some spectacular highlights in last week’s NLSC Top 10 that had us all buzzing, and provide an update on reaching Year 6 in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER.

NLSC Podcast #472: A Deep Dive Into NBA Action ’95

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #472 of the NLSC Podcast!

NBA Action ’95 for the Sega Genesis was a game ahead of its time, yet it’s often overlooked compared to other 90s hoops titles. As such, we’re making it the subject of a deep dive this week, from its gameplay to its historical content to the interesting history of the NBA Action series. A listener question also prompts us to compare the NBA Playgrounds games to NBA Jam: On Fire Edition; do Saber’s games hold a candle to EA Sports’ second (and to date, final) NBA Jam release? We also catch up on the latest from Year 5 in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, and some other fun happenings around the community, including the 100th edition of the Top 10.

Monday Tip-Off: Finishing The Drive for Five

Monday Tip-Off: Finishing The Drive for Five

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with a recap of my Drive for Five in Year 5 of my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER.

At this point, my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER is well beyond being just a kick. It’s become one of my all-time favourite basketball gaming experiences, and a staple of my rotation on the virtual hardwood. Even though I enjoyed NBA 2K23 far more than NBA 2K21 and NBA 2K22, it couldn’t replace NBA 2K14 for PlayStation 4 as the star of my lineup. And honestly, why should it? While I do consider NBA 2K23 to be the strongest release in the last few years, if I’m enjoying an older title even more, there’s no reason to put it aside just because it isn’t the latest game.

Year 5 proved to be another captivating journey. As I’ve said before, I’ve greatly enjoyed how each season in this NBA 2K14 MyCAREER has ended up telling its own story, even if they’ve ultimately culminated with a similar ending. To that point, though every season has ended with my player celebrating a championship, the road to that destination veered off into different routes that were all fun to travel. While the numbers may suggest otherwise, the Drive for Five actually stands as one of the most challenging seasons so far in my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER. It demonstrates the value of playing through multiple seasons, and experiencing an ongoing alternate reality.

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: ’86 Bulls vs ’86 Celtics

NBA 2K14 Retro Series: '86 Bulls vs '86 Celtics

Last time in the NBA 2K14 Retro Series, I played a matchup between the ’93 Bulls and ’93 Hornets. I’m sticking with my favourite team and player for this latest instalment, this time flashing back to 1986 with a showdown between a young Michael Jordan and Larry Bird’s Celtics.

This matchup is of course the one that produced MJ’s 63-point game in the first round of the 1986 Playoffs, a record that still stands today. The Bulls were nevertheless outmatched by the eventual champions, being swept in the series. Even though the aim of the NBA 2K14 Retro Series is to portray actual historical matchups, I will take liberties here and there, especially as I’m always aiming to win the games. Something that is definitely true to life here is MJ racking up buckets with an array of aerial moves and midrange jumpers, and you’ll certainly see that in this highlight reel. The game came down to the wire, much as his 63-point game did. Will history be re-written here? Watch to find out!

As always, a reminder that Dee and I are regularly uploading highlight reels and other video features to the NLSC’s YouTube channel, so be sure to subscribe for more basketball gaming content!
