NLSC Podcast – Episode #31

Leftos returns to make it a trio once more as we talk about the latest news and events in the basketball gaming community in Episode #31 of the NLSC Podcast. Join us this week as we recap a few news and notes from the community, talk about the 2013 Conference Finals and offer more thoughts on the next generation of consoles. On tap this week:

  • Leftos is back, as not even wild sandstorms can suppress his passion for his digital broadcasting duties!
  • We remind everyone to show off their creativity by creating some custom NBA Live 14 covers, thanks to hiteshom’s template. The possibility of Kyrie Irving being the NBA Live 14 cover player is also discussed.
  • Some fun ideas for upcoming podcasts are brought up, as we invite the community to let us know if they’re interested.
  • Taking a look at the latest news and releases from our modding community, we recognise some big releases while once again bringing up the idea of an open source approach.
  • TGsoGood’s work adding female players and WNBA jerseys to NBA 2K13 leads to a discussion about video games based on women’s sports.
  • This week’s NBA discussion focuses on the Conference Finals. The Grizzlies are out, the Spurs are in the Finals and the Heat and Pacers are still battling it out.
  • How do we see the Eastern Conference Finals and potential NBA Finals matchups playing out?
  • At the risk of sounding unoriginal, we don’t care for the job the referees are doing, or the way certain players are flopping.
  • The discussion moves to the latest news and info surrounding the next gen consoles. Leftos offers his reactions to the announcement of the Xbox One.
  • We close with some additional NBA Live and NBA 2K news.

NBA 2K14 News Coming Next Week?

Ronnie 2K appears to be hyping some upcoming news for NBA 2K14 on Twitter, as he has posted a couple of Tweets professing his passion for the game and pledging that the NBA 2K team will raise the bar. He notably used the hashtag #SixSix13 in both Tweets, seemingly pointing at some kind of announcement on June 6th, 2013.

What do you think is coming on June 6th? A glimpse at the game, perhaps even the next gen version? The reveal of the cover player? Or something else entirely? Have your say in the comments below and as always, feel free to take the discussion to the NBA 2K14 section in the NLSC Forum.

JaoSming’s Predictions #6: Next Gen Features & X-Factors

The final prediction video in this year’s series has been uploaded. With Microsoft revealing its competitor to Sony’s Playstation 4 in a few hours, I look at next generation predictions and some x-factors for both games to find success.

Thank you for following the series of videos, I hope you enjoyed watching them as much as I have reading and responding to the feedback. Remember to share your predictions in the comments, and for a recap of all my predictions check out the Forum Thread. I’ll be back in a few days to recap the experience and directly respond to some feedback.

JaoSming’s Predictions #5: Custom & Special Teams

This is the second to last prediction video, I hope you all have enjoyed the series so far. This was by far the most difficult video for me to do, since I have never played the MyTEAM mode or any of EA Sport’s Ultimate Team modes. Other than that, the continued FIBA talk for NBA Live 14 and my feelings on retro teams in NBA 2K14 was simple in comparison, even if my predictions may seem a bit exuberant.

Remember to respond and share your own predictions in the comments below, and check out the Forum Thread as well.

JaoSming’s Predictions #4: Graphics & Presentation

With only two more days until Microsoft reveals its next generation console, and possibly the first information and footage for the next generation of basketball video games, let’s cover graphics and presentation today. While gameplay should still be the core of any basketball game, these aspects make it easier to get lost and enjoy even subpar games more than we normally would.

So, if you want to share your own predictions or respond to mine, you can do so in the comments below or in this Forum Thread.

JaoSming’s Predictions #3: Career & Franchise Modes

Continuing right along with my prediction series for features I think we’ll see and play in NBA 2K14 and NBA Live 14, today the focus is on the Career and Franchise modes. While last year we saw the social media shift from My Player to MyCAREER in NBA 2K13, and with EA teasing and previewing Become Legendary for NBA Elite 11, I see a vast difference between the two modes. For franchise modes, well, I’m not sure that with the next generation of consoles coming out that these modes will get the attention they surely deserve.

What are you thoughts on these single player modes? Share them in the comments section below and in the updated Forum Thread.

JaoSming’s Predictions #2: Online & Gameplay Improvements

For the second prediction video I take a look at what improvements I think we’ll see in both gameplay and online features for the upcoming basketball games. Trying to figure out whether EA or 2K will go conservative or innovative in these categories has always been difficult to predict in the past for me, but I have no issue being wrong for the sake of a better game.

After watching, please share your thoughts on my predictions, or better yet share your own predictions on what we will see with the gameplay and online features in NBA 2K14 or NBA Live 14 in the comments below or in the Forum Thread.

JaoSming’s Predictions #1: Cover Athletes

For the third year in the row, I’ve decided to embarrass myself by publicly sharing my predictions for the upcoming basketball video games. You can take a look at the recap threads for my predictions for NBA 2K12 and NBA 2K13/NBA Live 13 to get an idea at how far off I am each year.

This year I hope to do the prediction series differently, with commentary videos rather than short articles. I will do a wrap up post at the end, but let’s start this all off with a throwaway prediction, the cover athletes for NBA 2K14 and NBA Live 14. Please share your better predictions in the comments below, on the video, or in the Forum Thread. Enjoy!

2K is seeking Bay Area fans for playtesting sessions

Ronnie 2K has Tweeted that 2K is looking for people from the Bay Area to playtest upcoming and existing games and give their opinions. This could be a great chance for you to not only get to play some of 2K’s upcoming games early, but also to influence them with your feedback and get to meet a lot of cool people in the process.

As noted by the signup page, which requires a survey to be completed in order for the candidate to be matched with an upcoming playtest:

2K is looking for Console/PC/Mobile game players to playtest upcoming and existing games. Tests range from taking simple surveys to actual in-house live game play sessions. Gamers who participate in testing will be rewarded for their time and help.

ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OLD!

Please, fill out the following survey and tell us about your gaming likes and dislikes. Information collected is used only to match you with an appropriate game test, and will not be distributed outside of 2K.

Based on your responses we will try to match you with an upcoming play test.

When we find a play test for you we will follow up with an additional survey and invitation to our office in Novato, CA to play one of our upcoming titles and then tell us what you think.

If you are selected and you participate in one of our play tests, we’ll gladly thank you with a 2K or Rockstar game of your choice or visa gift card (to be confirmed in a follow up email after selection).

So, if you’re from the Bay Area, you don’t want to miss out! Which game would you be most looking forward to playtesting if you were picked? What would you be most looking for if you got the chance to playtest? Give us your thoughts in the comment section below or in this thread in the Forum.

NBA 2K14 Release Date Revealed, Platforms TBA

As reported by Operation Sports, Take-Two have published a fiscal report that lists their upcoming titles in 2013. NBA 2K14’s listing mentions a release date of October 1st 2013, in line with the usual early October release that we see for NBA video games. The listed platforms are currently To Be Advised, hinting at a next gen release and hopefully leaving the door open for the PC releases to continue.

With EA’s fiscal report previously providing strong hints that the NBA Live series will return this year with NBA Live 14, it’s likely that its targeted release date is also October 1st, since the NBA has traditionally mandated that both titles come out on the same day (cancellations of EA’s games aside). As mentioned in the previous bulletin, it’s also been strongly hinted that NBA Live 14 will be a next gen title. Add your thoughts in the comments below and as always, feel free to take the discussion to the Forum.

Podcast Discussion: Realism of Video Games vs What We See on TV

The main topic of discussion in next week’s episode of the NLSC Podcast is going to be the level of realism that we see in basketball video games compared to what we actually see when watching the NBA on TV. We’re hoping to have a larger panel than usual and are looking forward to putting out an interesting show for you all.

We’re also interested in getting your thoughts on the matter, so that we can read them out during our discussion in Episode #29. How would you rate the realism we’ve seen in basketball games, when making a comparison to what we see on TV? How close is it to representing the real sport? How much realism do you want to see, or believe there needs to be in basketball games? Sound off in the comments below or have your say here in the Forum!

As always, we cover a multitude of matters related to basketball and gaming in this week’s episode, so tune in and enjoy our discussion of the following topics:
