NLSC Podcast – E3 2013 Special (Part 1)

E3 2013 is upon us, so we’re coming at you with a series of special editions of the NLSC Podcast this week. Join Leftos, Ben and myself for Part 1, in which we recap a couple of news items from last week before discussing all the information and previews coming out of the four press conferences at Day 0 of E3.

  • The cover player for NBA 2K14 has been revealed and it’s LeBron James.
  • On the other side of things, a new NBA Live 14 producer interview was posted and another teaser was added to the official website.
  • We tip off the E3 discussion with our thoughts on the NBA 2K14 Next Gen Reveal Trailer, featuring pre-alpha gameplay footage.
  • We also contrast, compare and react to the NBA Live 14 trailer, which featured CGI and in-game assets rather than gameplay clips.
  • The Microsoft and Sony press conferences are recapped and discussed. Bet you’ll never guess which console we’re leaning towards.
  • We mention a couple of other games that captured our interest during the press conferences.

We’ll be continuing our coverage of E3 in Part 2 tomorrow. Part 1 ran a little longer than we anticipated, but we had quite a few things to talk about, including some news items from last week. We are expecting the following shows to be shorter episodes but nevertheless, we hope you enjoy Part 1 and as always, invite you to give us your feedback on the show and everything we discussed in the comments below, as well as in this thread.

NBA 2K14 Next Gen Reveal Trailer

NBA 2K14 Cover Art

2K Sports exhibited a Next Gen Reveal trailer for NBA 2K14 during Sony’s press conference at E3 2013. The trailer features cover player LeBron James talking to his virtual self, aka “Video Game James”, highlighting facial animations in the next gen version of the game. It goes on to show some clips of LeBron James in action in NBA 2K14, in what has been confirmed to be actual pre-alpha gameplay footage.

Check out the trailer below or watch it here on YouTube if you can’t see the embedded video. Have your say in the comments below and join in the discussion that’s taking place in this thread in the NBA 2K14 section of the NLSC Forum.

First Look at NBA 2K14 Next-Gen during tonight’s Sony Press Conference

NBA 2K14 Cover Art

As noted by 2K Sports’ social media accounts, a first glimpse of the next-generation version of NBA 2K14 will be shown during tonight’s Sony Press Conference, which is scheduled for 6PM PDT, 1AM GMT. We will, of course, have the scoop for you during and after the Sony Press Conference. We will add links for the live stream of the Sony Press Conference as they become available.

UPDATE: Sony has posted a link for the live-stream.

What do you expect in today’s reveal of the next-gen version? What would you like to see the most out of the next-generation of NBA 2K as we move forward? Give us your opinion in the comment section below, or in this thread in the Forum. You can also discuss all the happenings of Day 0 of E3 2013 in this thread in the Forum. Keep in mind we will be discussing this first look as well as all other news that come out today and your reactions in the first of a series of daily podcasts during E3 recorded tomorrow.

NBA 2K14 Will Be Released on PC

Finally, some big news coming from 2K today! All kidding aside, it seems that retailer pre-order listings of an NBA 2K14 PC version were validated with the announcement of LeBron James being on the cover today. While tonight’s Joystiq article links to official PC boxart, Kotaku specifically mentions the PC version, saying;

James will grace a packshot (full size at the end of this article) appearing on five different platforms—the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, arriving on the traditional first-Tuesday-in-October date of Oct. 1; and on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 when those new consoles arrive.

Since the PC version is grouped in with the PS3 and Xbox 360, it is safe to assume the PC will see a port of the current generation game, rather than a next generation port. Furthermore, the pre-order trailer only mentioning the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 implies that the PC will once again miss out on the VC currency system that was advertised.

Once more information is released, we’ll be sure to report it here. For now, check out the NBA 2K14 Forums and give your celebratory thoughts in the comments below.

NBA 2K14 King James Pre-Order Pack & Game Details

Along with the commercial featuring LeBron James’ involvement with NBA 2K14, a second video was uploaded to the official 2KSports YouTube Channel. This lists the pre-order bonuses for NBA 2K14, called the “King James Bonus Pack”, which is available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game.

The pack includes bonus content for a mode called “Path to Greatness”, LeBron James unlocked in Blacktop Mode (yay Blacktop Mode returns!), the LeBron James Signature Skill and 10,000 Virtual Currency, implying that system will be returning from NBA 2K13.

Check it out below, and check the NBA 2K14 Forum for additional discussion.

LeBron is the Cover Athlete for NBA 2K14

The teased commercial for NBA 2K14 has just aired during the pre-game show for Game 1 of the NBA Finals. In it, Steve Kerr is interviewing a shadowed man, asking about 2K and whether or not the man will try and stop them. Instead, he leans forward, reveals himself as LeBron James, and says “No, I’m going to join them”. A shot of LeBron doing his chalk toss on a generic game box with NBA 2K14 is shown before the commercial ends.

For the full discussion, check out the NBA 2K14 Forum. Watch the commercial below or click here to see it on YouTube if you can’t see the embedded video.

Teaser Video for June 6th Released By NBA 2K

The Official 2K Sports YouTube Channel has released a teaser video for their #SixSix13 campaign. One can only assume that the hashtag and hype is leading us towards some kind of reveal of NBA 2K14 on June 6th (6/6/13), which just so happens to be the same day as Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

The video itself showcases NBA 2K13 footage, with no accolades or other bragging points, but it does prominently feature current NBA players alongside the classic players and the USA Olympic teams. You can watch the video below, and speculate on what we will be seeing in two short days in the comments below and in our NBA 2K14 Forum.

Create your own custom NBA 2K14 covers

There haven’t been any hints as to who the cover player of NBA 2K14 might be, though our own JaoSming has predicted that Michael Jordan will grace the cover one more time, either by way of an alternate cover or alongside a current star (or stars). The reveal will likely be made within the next few weeks, but in the meantime it’s always fun to speculate.

You can also take your speculation one step further by creating some custom covers. In addition to posting a template for the NBA Live 14 cover, Forum user hiteshom has provided us with a template for anyone who wants to take a shot at creating their own NBA 2K14 cover. Download it in this thread and be sure to post your creations for the rest of us to see!

  • This week’s NBA discussion focuses on the Conference Finals. The Grizzlies are out, the Spurs are in the Finals and the Heat and Pacers are still battling it out.
  • How do we see the Eastern Conference Finals and potential NBA Finals matchups playing out?
  • At the risk of sounding unoriginal, we don’t care for the job the referees are doing, or the way certain players are flopping.
  • The discussion moves to the latest news and info surrounding the next gen consoles. Leftos offers his reactions to the announcement of the Xbox One.
  • We close with some additional NBA Live and NBA 2K news.

NBA 2K14 News Coming Next Week?

Ronnie 2K appears to be hyping some upcoming news for NBA 2K14 on Twitter, as he has posted a couple of Tweets professing his passion for the game and pledging that the NBA 2K team will raise the bar. He notably used the hashtag #SixSix13 in both Tweets, seemingly pointing at some kind of announcement on June 6th, 2013.

What do you think is coming on June 6th? A glimpse at the game, perhaps even the next gen version? The reveal of the cover player? Or something else entirely? Have your say in the comments below and as always, feel free to take the discussion to the NBA 2K14 section in the NLSC Forum.

JaoSming’s Predictions #6: Next Gen Features & X-Factors

The final prediction video in this year’s series has been uploaded. With Microsoft revealing its competitor to Sony’s Playstation 4 in a few hours, I look at next generation predictions and some x-factors for both games to find success.

Thank you for following the series of videos, I hope you enjoyed watching them as much as I have reading and responding to the feedback. Remember to share your predictions in the comments, and for a recap of all my predictions check out the Forum Thread. I’ll be back in a few days to recap the experience and directly respond to some feedback.

JaoSming’s Predictions #5: Custom & Special Teams

This is the second to last prediction video, I hope you all have enjoyed the series so far. This was by far the most difficult video for me to do, since I have never played the MyTEAM mode or any of EA Sport’s Ultimate Team modes. Other than that, the continued FIBA talk for NBA Live 14 and my feelings on retro teams in NBA 2K14 was simple in comparison, even if my predictions may seem a bit exuberant.

Remember to respond and share your own predictions in the comments below, and check out the Forum Thread as well.

JaoSming’s Predictions #4: Graphics & Presentation

With only two more days until Microsoft reveals its next generation console, and possibly the first information and footage for the next generation of basketball video games, let’s cover graphics and presentation today. While gameplay should still be the core of any basketball game, these aspects make it easier to get lost and enjoy even subpar games more than we normally would.

So, if you want to share your own predictions or respond to mine, you can do so in the comments below or in this Forum Thread.

JaoSming’s Predictions #3: Career & Franchise Modes

Continuing right along with my prediction series for features I think we’ll see and play in NBA 2K14 and NBA Live 14, today the focus is on the Career and Franchise modes. While last year we saw the social media shift from My Player to MyCAREER in NBA 2K13, and with EA teasing and previewing Become Legendary for NBA Elite 11, I see a vast difference between the two modes. For franchise modes, well, I’m not sure that with the next generation of consoles coming out that these modes will get the attention they surely deserve.

What are you thoughts on these single player modes? Share them in the comments section below and in the updated Forum Thread.
