Recently, BPDHoplite alerted me to the fact that a couple of vital NBA 2K16 modding tools by gregkwaste were no longer available. Fortunately, with the use of the Wayback Machine, I was able to track down the NBA 2K16 Explorer and 3D Importer/Exporter, and re-upload them to our database. You can find them at the links below!

Obviously we want to preserve mods and modding tools alike, whether they’re for NBA 2K16 or any other game, so please feel free to alert us to any missing files, or indeed upload them yourself if you have them. Unfortunately there will inevitably be some files that are lost forever, but as a community, we can do our best to track down and preserve them whenever we can. Thanks once again to BPDHoplite for the heads up in this instance!

Monday Tip-Off: The Truth About Reactivating Servers

Monday Tip-Off: The Truth About Reactivating Servers

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off by discussing the prospect of reactivating servers for older NBA 2K games.

Whenever the official NBA 2K Twitter sends out a Tweet, you’ll see some familiar replies. Some gamers will bring up technical issues that they’re having, prompting a form response from the 2K Support account. Others will be asking for Locker Codes or VC giveaways. There’s bound to be a few disgruntled gamers making that eternal request of “fix your servers!” And speaking of online support, you might see a couple of people raising the issue of reactivating servers for games such as NBA 2K16 and NBA 2K17. In turn, those people will be accused of being blinded by nostalgia.

While I disagree that it’s merely myopic nostalgia that has created an appreciation for NBA 2K16 and NBA 2K17, and a desire to see 2K reactivating the servers for those titles, it is fair to note the unlikelihood of it ever happening. That isn’t to say that I’d be against 2K reactivating servers for those games, or some other old favourites. Even if it were for a week or two every year to celebrate the history of the series, it would be a fantastic opportunity to revisit classic releases and re-download lost updates. I have my doubts that 2K would go to the trouble of doing so however, and while I’ll always support my fellow gamers over a company, I do understand their position.

Wayback Wednesday: 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16

Wayback Wednesday: 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16, as well as how the mode has changed since then.

There was a time when I was very reluctant to play online. Technically that refers to the present day as well, as I no longer find the scene appealing in NBA 2K. To that point though, for a while I was far more enthusiastic about online play. I’d dabbled with it in the past, but was generally content to play franchise modes, or stick to the NBA side of MyCAREER. However, when Kenny invited Arcane and I to play 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16 along with community members The X, Valor, and zzcoolj21, we were hooked. NLSC THRILLHO was born!

Although some improvements were made to 2K Pro-Am following its introduction in NBA 2K16, I’d still say that the original incarnation of the mode is one of the best. The novelty of it being a fresh new experience certainly contributes to my nostalgia for it, but many of the changes to MyCAREER and the online scene since then have taken it in a disappointing direction. Once again though, that first version of 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16 was a blast, and that also carried over into NBA 2K17. Let’s take a look back…way back…

NLSC Podcast #393: Failure to Launch

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #393 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

A first round series in the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament concluded with a fittingly competitive contest. On a more unfortunate note, postal delays continue to keep the PlayStation 5 version of NBA 2K22 from reaching one of us, but the other has some further impressions to share. We discuss the state of MyTEAM in this year’s game, and provide an update on an issue with the PC version. We also talk about balance, and frustration with criticism being dismissed out of hand. After NBA 2K16 comes up, we’re moved to reflect on the history of issues with retro teams, and the Hall of Fame Ratings scale. In a reversal of last week’s mailbag, we also talk about the worst basketball game launches, as well as some of the most frustrating mechanics over the years.

Join in the conversation in the comments below, or here in the Forum! Additionally, feel free to hit us up with any feedback on the episode, as well as mailbag questions and topic suggestions for future shows. For more information on the NLSC Podcast including episode guides, check out this page in our Wiki. The show also comes out on our YouTube channel, so be sure to subscribe for future episodes and other video content.

Wayback Wednesday: A MyCAREER Scoop for NBA 2K16

Wayback Wednesday: A MyCAREER Scoop for NBA 2K16

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m recalling the time that I received a scoop about MyCAREER in NBA 2K16, which I ultimately didn’t publish.

Back in July of 2015, we were all awaiting further previews and details of what to expect from NBA 2K16. There had been rumours that MyCAREER would include some college gameplay, due to the leaked achievement list and research unearthing a licensing agreement between 2K Sports and the Collegiate Licensing Company. As screenshots continued to leak, it seemed increasingly likely that MyCAREER would indeed feature a collegiate career as part of its story. By September, trailers confirmed those details for Spike Lee’s MyCAREER joint, “Livin’ Da Dream“.

Although I was posting rumours and confirmed details alike as they made the rounds, there was one post that I didn’t make. An anonymous source sent me a scoop via the NLSC’s contact form, offering up snippets of information on what to expect from the MyCAREER story in NBA 2K16. Obviously anyone covering video games enjoys being able to break news and confirm rumours, but I was hesitant, and ultimately elected not to post a bulletin discussing those details. Why did I make that choice? Let’s take a look back…way back…
