Monday Tip-Off: Limited Locker Codes & Time Zones, An Odd Combination

Getting MyPLAYER Dunk Package via Locker Codes in NBA 2K15

We’re at midcourt, the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Get your week started here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to basketball video games.

The 2016 NBA season tips off in just a couple of days, so I’m expecting to see the official social media accounts for NBA 2K start dropping some goodies in the form of Locker Codes for NBA 2K16 very soon. While the random rewards aren’t always particularly generous, they do provide a good opportunity to stock up on Virtual Currency or MyTEAM points, snag a great MyTEAM card, or unlock an animation for your MyPLAYER. If you’ve got the game fired up when Locker Codes drop, it’s well worth punching them in.

However, there’s the rub: it’s very easy to miss out on redeeming a code, especially if you’re on the other side of the world. And even if you are in the same time zone as Visual Concepts, you have to be fast – sometimes, ridiculously so – in getting into the game, and punching in the codes. Otherwise, you’re not getting any freebies.

On one hand, this is fair enough. There’s only so much stuff that 2K can freely hand out, when grinding and microtransactions are both part of the game. However, with the size of the NBA 2K user base, and its distribution throughout the world, I do feel that 2K could stand to be a little more generous with the Locker Codes; both in giving gamers world-wide a chance to redeem them, and in the rewards that they yield.

There’s also some exciting news to share, as it seems a new tool will make it a lot easier to use art updates in NBA 2K16. For more information, please see this thread in the Releases & Previews section of the NLSC Forum.

NBA 2K16 Patch #2 Out Now on Xbox One, Coming Soon for PC

For those who may be unaware, the second title update for NBA 2K16 has been pushed through on Xbox One.

As previously noted, the patch addresses various crashes and freezes in NBA 2K16, tunes sweat effects, fixes hairstyle glitches, resolves matchmaking problems in MyPARK and PRO-AM, adjusts simulated stats in MyGM and MyLEAGUE, and more. Pro-Am Team Play has also been added. For the full patch notes, please see the previous bulletin.

There’s no set date for the PC patch at this time, but it’s expected to drop soon. Leftos has mentioned that in addition to including the fixes contained in the patches for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of NBA 2K16, the PC patch will also include further optimisation tweaks, as well as changes and fixes for the video settings.

As soon as there is any news about the patch for NBA 2K16, we’ll be sure to post it. In the meantime, be sure to share your feedback on the latest patch, as well as suggestions and bug reports for future patches, in the NBA 2K16 section of the NLSC Forum. You can find a thread for general NBA 2K16 feedback here, a thread for general bug reports here, and a thread for PC crashes here.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #131

NLSC Podcast Logo

Well, would you look at that…we managed to record a new episode of the NLSC Podcast two weeks in a row! Episode #131 of the NLSC Podcast is out now, hosted by Arcane and myself; join us as we give our latest impressions of NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16, discuss a little retro basketball gaming, and react to the 2016 NBA GM survey.

On this week’s show…

  • We’ve had another week to play NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16, with a couple of patches being pushed through. What’s our latest take on this year’s games?
  • Since we didn’t cover it last week, we also give our thoughts on the MyNBA2K16 app. If you need extra VC, it’s definitely worth picking up.
  • We talk about a recent retro basketball game purchase, and reminisce once again about the days when multiple companies released yearly hoops titles. Will we ever see that happen again?
  • Following up on one of last week’s big NBA stories, Lamar Odom is thankfully on the mend.
  • The 2016 NBA GM Survey is out on NBA.com. Are we the only ones who make terrible predictions?
  • We wrap up Episode #131 of the NLSC Podcast with a gem from NBA 2K16 that surely can’t be a coincidence.

Monday Tip-Off: How MyCAREER Could Truly Let Us Be The Story

Vic in NBA 2K16 MyCAREER

We’re at midcourt, the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Get your week started here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to basketball video games.

If you’ve tuned in to Episode #130 of the NLSC Podcast, you’ll know that I’m not the biggest fan of the story in this year’s MyCAREER. If you’ve been listening to the NLSC Podcast for a while now, you’ll know that that’s been a recurring complaint of mine since MyCAREER adopted the story-driven approach beginning with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of NBA 2K14. Reading some of the posts that have been made about MyCAREER since the release of NBA 2K16, it seems I’m not alone in my criticism.

Specific criticisms of the writing aside, my discontent with MyCAREER can be summed up as such: a story that’s too linear without branching options, choices that are largely cosmetic and inconsequential, and in NBA 2K16 in particular, a protagonist that’s intended to have very specific characteristics, which conflict with the RPG elements and “put yourself in the game” aspect of the mode. To that end, the tagline of “Be The Story” becomes a little ironic.

However, since I’m often advocating for constructive criticism – fans not fanboys, critics not haters, and all that – it seems only appropriate that I put my money where my mouth is, and offer up some suggestions as to how the mode could be improved. The story-driven approach to MyCAREER probably isn’t going anywhere, so how do I think Visual Concepts can best put it to use? Well, let’s take a look at how I feel that we can better “Be The Story” in NBA 2K17 and beyond.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #130

NLSC Podcast Logo

After a longer than expected hiatus, we’re back with Episode #130 of the NLSC Podcast! Illness and scheduling conflicts have once again gotten in the way as of late, but we’re back on the air, and looking forward to getting back into the habit of recording weekly shows, especially with the release of NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16.

On this week’s show…

  • We tip things off with our impressions of NBA Live 16. Is it the step up over NBA Live 15 that we were hoping it would be?
  • A couple of patches have already been released for NBA Live 16, so we have some impressions to share regarding a couple of the fixes.
  • NBA 2K16 has already sold four million copies, of which we own a couple. What do we make of this year’s offering from Visual Concepts?
  • We’ve been fairly critical of the story-driven approach to MyCAREER these past few years, but in NBA 2K16, it’s not all bad. Then again, it’s not all good, either…
  • Catching up on some community news, our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content will be resuming soon, alongside our continued NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16 coverage. NBA 2K16 PC modding has also tipped off with the release of gregkwaste’s NBA 2K16 Explorer.
  • Moving on to this week’s NBA discussion, we react to the terrible situation with Lamar Odom.
  • On a happier note, we look ahead to the 2016 season, and pick our shortlist of title contenders.
  • We wrap up Episode #130 of the NLSC Podcast with more NBA fashion critiques, and the impending anniversary of a league record.

NBA 2K16 Patch #2 Now Available on PlayStation 4

NBA 2K16: Stephen Curry

The second title update for NBA 2K16 is now available for the PlayStation 4 version of the game.

2K has indicated that the patch is still awaiting approval from Microsoft, but they’re hopeful that it will be pushed through on Xbox One within the next week. While 2K has neglected to mention the PC version on the game’s social media pages, Leftos mentioned in the Forum that there have been some unexpected delays with the PC patch, but they’re hoping that by the end of next week, it’ll also be pushed through.

A list of patch notes has been posted, which you can check out below, as well as here over on the official NBA 2K16 Facebook page. Some of the key issues that the patch addresses include various crashes and freezes, sweat effects, hairstyle glitches, matchmaking problems in MyPARK and PRO-AM, simulated stats in MyGM and MyLEAGUE, and more. Pro-Am Team Play has also been added.

We’ll keep everyone posted as the patches for the Xbox One and PC versions of NBA 2K16 are released. In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below, and join in the discussion here in the NBA 2K16 section of the NLSC Forum.

Monday Tip-Off: Head in the Cloud – Basketball Video Games & Always-On

Gaming in NBA 2K14's MyCAREER

We’re at midcourt, the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Get your week started here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to basketball video games.

Always-on remains a controversial issue in video gaming, right up there with downloadable content, microtransactions, and third party developers producing platform exclusives. So strong is the backlash against it, Microsoft even had to change its approach with the Xbox One, and is arguably still feeling the effects of its initial stance as the console continues to be out-sold by the PlayStation 4. The message is clear: gamers do not like always-on.

As the online component of basketball video games has become a bigger part of the experience, our community has started to feel the sting of always-on and cloud saves. Key game modes require a constant connection to the Internet, and while a couple of them can also be played offline, issues can arise when there are temporary connection or server issues. But what happens when the server is shut down for good?

Hotfixes Released for NBA 2K16 PC

NBA 2K16: Stephen Curry

For those who may be unaware, a couple of hotfixes have been pushed through for the PC version of NBA 2K16. If the latest update hasn’t come through for you, be sure to restart your Steam client.

There aren’t any detailed patch notes at this time, but the hotfixes are intended to address some of the performance issues (such as stuttering and low framerates) that gamers have been experiencing with NBA 2K16 PC. As per Leftos’ post, the development team is working on a fix for issues with commentary disappearing, but it wasn’t quite ready to include in the most recent hotfix.

As he was last year, Leftos has been quite active in the NBA 2K16 section of the NLSC Forum, collecting feedback from PC gamers including crash reports. If you’re having problems with NBA 2K16 crashing, be sure to follow the instructions in this thread, and post your crash report for analysis.

Leftos has also mentioned that the development team is indeed keeping track of the general NBA 2K16 bug reports across all platforms. While there’s no ETA at this time, a cross-platform patch that addresses those issues will be released at some point in the near future. In the meantime, we are invited to continue posting any and all bug reports and constructive feedback regarding NBA 2K16, so be sure to post about any issues you’re having.

Monday Tip-Off: Fanboys, Haters, and the Basketball Gaming Community

Fanboys, Haters, and the Basketball Gaming Community

We’re at midcourt, the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Get your week started here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to basketball video games.

In last week’s Friday Five, I talked about aspects of online culture that I dislike. While I’d rather not spend too much time dwelling on the negative – incidentally, that would be another pet peeve of mine when it comes to online culture – I did touch on something that I’d like to talk a little bit more about today for Monday Tip-Off: fanboys and haters within the basketball gaming community.

I don’t want to make a sweeping, generalised, melodramatic statement such as “Fanboys and haters are ruining the basketball gaming community”, because that’s not exactly true. Unfortunately, such a statement isn’t completely without merit, either. At the very least, it’s reaching some incredibly silly levels, with severe tunnel vision and an almost complete lack of perspective. Granted, this is often the case in any fandom, but since this is our community we’re talking about, I’d like to see us do better.
