  • It took a little longer than we had hoped, with more interruptions than we anticipated, but we’ve moved to our new home. We’re looking forward to bigger and better things!
  • There wasn’t a lot of gaming news to catch up on this week, but we put out another reminder that there are a couple of days left to pick up NBA 2K16 for PS4 through PlayStation Plus.

NBA 2K16 PlayStation Plus Reminder

Kevin Durant takes on the Warriors in NBA 2K16

A quick reminder to any and all PlayStation 4 users with an active PlayStation Plus subscription: NBA 2K16 is still available for your Instant Games Collection. If you haven’t picked up the game yet, or you’ve been playing on PC and would like to double-dip, this is an excellent opportunity to get it at no extra cost.

It will only be available until July 5th however, so act fast if you want to add the game to your collection. Note that you don’t need to download NBA 2K16 right away; it weighs in at around 50 GB, so if your hard drive is full, or you’re having connection problems, simply add it to your collection so that you can download it later. It will remain accessible as long as you have an active PlayStation Plus subscription. More details can be found here in the PlayStation Store.

If you do take advantage of the offer and pick up NBA 2K16 for PlayStation 4, be sure to join us in discussing the game here in the NLSC Forum! Please be advised, however, that the mods in our Downloads section are not compatible with the PS4 version. Several users have made all sorts of custom rosters that are available through 2K Share, including offseason rosters, so be sure to check them out.

NBA 2K16 PC 80% Off on Steam

NBA 2K16: LeBron James

The annual Steam Summer Sale is underway, and basketball gamers can already reap the benefits. If you haven’t yet picked up the PC version of NBA 2K16, now is a good time to do so, as it is available at an 80% discount until July 5th.

If you’d like to pick up the Michael Jordan edition of NBA 2K16, it is also still available at an 82% discount. The Michael Jordan edition includes a rookie Jordan card for MyTEAM, in-game Jordan content for your MyPLAYER, and 30,000 VC.

The PC version of NBA 2K16 is not as moddable as previous editions of NBA 2K, but our modding community has made several in-roads since the game’s release last September. In terms of gameplay, features, and so forth, it is identical to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game. The official patches also seem to have addressed performance issues for most PC gamers, as well as fixed keyboard support and a couple of other PC-specific problems.

You can check out more impressions and information on NBA 2K16 PC in this section of the NLSC Forum. If you pick up the game, be sure to check out our Downloads section as well as the Releases & Previews board, and feel free to share your impressions of the game as well.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #164

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #164 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! This week, Arcane, Kenny, and I discuss the epic conclusion of the 2016 NBA Finals, some NBA Live 17 and NBA 2K17 tidbits, and our latest sessions in 2K Pro-Am.

On this week’s show…

  • We tip off the show with some housekeeping matters, specifically our forthcoming server move, and our appeal to help us cover the hosting costs moving forward.
  • The season finale of NBA 2KTV revealed a few interesting tidbits about NBA 2K17, from changes to Locker Codes to the development of a face scanning app for mobile devices.
  • We recap some Tweets of interest from the official NBA Live Twitter regarding NBA Live 17, and the possibility of future roster updates for NBA Live 16.
  • There are rumours that NBA Live 17 will feature a story-driven career mode. We consider the possibility, and reflect once again on NBA 2K16’s MyCAREER mode, now that we’ve all finished the first season.
  • What are the advantages of basketball gaming on the PC versus playing on consoles, and vice versa?
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming featured several more games of 2K Pro-Am, a couple of which were really, really satisfying.
  • The 2016 NBA Finals are in the books, as LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers pulled off the unlikely comeback. Once again, we discuss LeBron’s legacy.
  • Ahead of the 2016 NBA Draft, we discuss a couple of big trades that have been announced. A eulogy for Derrick Rose’s Chicago Bulls career is included.
  • We wrap up Episode #164 of the NLSC Podcast with this week’s Trivia Time! Can you get the answers before Arcane and Kenny?

The Sunday Substitute: My NBA 2K16 MyCAREER Evolution

The week is in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter, which means it’s time for The Sunday Substitute! It’s the article where I get some valuable minutes while the star is resting on the bench. I might not have the time to do this every week, but I like to think I’m still making a contribution to the team.

In this edition, I want to talk about MyCAREER and how I have approached it in NBA 2K16. Whether I’m building a team in a franchise mode or creating the next superstar in a player mode, I have generally found the reward to be in the gameplay experience alone. NBA 2K16, on the other hand, has been a different story for me. It’s the first NBA game that I have really delved into the online aspect – with MyPARK, 2K PRO-AM and MyTEAM – and it is also the first game I have really dealt with Virtual Currency (VC). All the sudden, the way I play one game mode affects how I play every game mode.

This article is basically a timeline of my experience in MyCAREER in NBA 2K16 and what kept me motivated to stick with it. My motivations generally changed depending on my needs in NBA 2K16 and whether I completed what previously motivated me. With that said, here’s my evolution through MyCAREER in NBA 2K16.

The Friday Five: 5 Issues with MyCAREER/Pro-Am’s Grading Logic

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

I’m on a real 2K Pro-Am kick lately, as I’ve really been enjoying getting together with Arcane, Kenny, and other members of our community to play a few games each week. However, while we do have a lot of fun at the Joel Anthony Arena – whenever we’re lucky enough to play there – we also have our fair share of frustrating moments. As I mentioned in Monday Tip-Off, some of our problems are self-inflicted, but there are a few issues that I would say do stem from gameplay imbalance and quirky logic. Obviously, these problems also affect the MyCAREER experience as well.

Apart from the story-driven approach, issues with the grading logic are one of my biggest complaints when it comes to MyCAREER (and now Pro-Am as well). Having recently gone back and played a few games of my memorable MyCAREER in NBA 2K13, I was frustrated to realise that I’m still experiencing some of the same problems in NBA 2K16. In order to enhance the MyCAREER and Pro-Am experience in NBA 2K17, I believe that the following five issues need to be addressed.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #163

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #163 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! The 2016 NBA Finals are nearing their end, and we’re still at least a few weeks away from getting much in the way of detailed NBA 2K17 news, but Arcane, Kenny, and I still have some fun topics to talk about this week.

On this week’s show…

  • Following on from last week, we react to the rest of Team 2K being revealed. Do we think it will result in any additional in-game content?
  • If any new classic teams are added to NBA 2K17, what are some of the teams we’d like to see included?
  • Would we like to see the ability to select different courts – such as classic and alternate courts – in addition to selecting jerseys before gameplay?
  • In our Week in Basketball Gaming: the challenges of having a 5’7″ power forward in 2K Pro-Am, a couple of enjoyable games, and our future plans.
  • Moving on to the real NBA, we recap and discuss the latest action from the NBA Finals, and make our predictions for the rest of the series.
  • We also discuss LeBron James’ legacy. Are fans and sportswriters being too hard on The King, and selling his career short?
  • In a very cool decision, ESPN and TNT have come to an agreement which will allow Craig Sager to work the sidelines for Game 6 of the Finals.
  • Episode #163 of the NLSC Podcast wraps up with the second instalment of our new segment, Trivia Time! Will Arcane and Kenny break their tie this week?

Monday Tip-Off: My Recent Experiences with 2K Pro-Am

Tipping Off in the Joel Anthony Arena in 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games.

If you’ve caught some of the recent episodes of the NLSC Podcast hosted by Arcane, Kenny, and myself, you’ll have heard us talking about our recent games of 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16. I realise that audio content isn’t for everyone, and a written article can sometimes be better at starting discussion, since it’s easier to directly quote and respond to each other’s points. To that end, I thought I’d follow on from Kenny’s first official edition of The Sunday Substitute with some of my own thoughts on 2K Pro-Am.

As I’ve said many times before, I’m not a big online gamer. I prefer the franchise mode experience, and I’ve come to quite enjoy the card collecting, team building modes as well. However, playing basketball video games online is significantly more fun when it’s done with friends, so I’ve really enjoyed getting together with Kenny, Arcane, and some other members of our community for a few games each week. As Kenny noted in the Forum, our record isn’t stellar, but we have a good time…for the most part.

So, what are my overall impressions of 2K Pro-Am to date, and what would I like to see done moving forward?

The Sunday Substitute: Achieving 99 Overall in NBA 2K

The GOAT, often rated 99 Overall

Welcome to the Sunday Substitute; the article where I get some valuable minutes while the star is resting on the bench. I might not have the time to do this every week, but I like to think I’m still making a contribution to the team.

Today I’m going to talk about 99 overall players. In real life, you may associate one or two players with the number, but it is a completely different story in NBA 2K16. In 2K PRO-AM, you will see at least one on the highly ranked teams, while in MyPARK, there are generally as many 99 players as there are players that are over 7-feet tall. However, even though the rarity of this calibre of player in real life versus online is an issue, I want to first delve into what kind of attributes make a 99 overall player.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #162

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #162 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! It’s been a quiet week for basketball video game news, but Arcane, Kenny, and I do have a couple of tidbits to talk about, as well as our latest experiences in 2K Pro-Am, and the 2016 NBA Finals. Also, a new segment makes its debut!

On this week’s show…

  • We tip off the show with another discussion on the lack of updates for NBA Live 16 through the end of the regular season and Playoffs, and what we’d like to see EA do during the offseason in the lead up to NBA Live 17.
  • 2K Sports are unveiling Team 2K, their talent lineup for NBA 2K17 which includes cover player Paul George. We speculate on the silhouettes in the teaser image.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming, we reflect on last week’s 2K Pro-Am session, where we discovered that contrary to what Homer Simpson once said, there are actually sweeter and more satisfying things than winning by default.
  • Turning our attention to the 2016 NBA Finals, we reflect on the first two games, and make our predictions for the rest of the series. Sorry, Cleveland Cavaliers fans.
  • As it stands right now, who is the Finals MVP? What does it mean for Stephen Curry’s legacy – and the Michael Jordan comparisons – if he doesn’t have a big series?
  • With the season winding down, we tally our final scores for Bold Predictions. We’re hoping to do better next year.
  • Episode #162 of the NLSC Podcast wraps up with a brand new segment: Trivia Time! Andrew is the quizmaster, as Arcane and Kenny square off in answering three trivia questions. This week, the questions cover NBA Live and NBA Jam.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #161

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #161 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane, Kenny, and myself as we discuss the reveal of the NBA 2K17 cover, a promising tidbit regarding NBA Live 17, the upcoming 2016 NBA Finals, and our week in basketball gaming.

On this week’s show…

  • Paul George has been officially revealed as the cover player for NBA 2K17. A good choice, but was he our pick? We also discuss the pre-order bonuses.
  • It seems that former NBA player Jamario Moon is providing motion capture for NBA Live 17, suggesting that a fully featured console release is definitely still in development.
  • Speaking of NBA Live 17, a recent report by GameInformer has revealed that all EA Sports titles will apparently be making the transition from the Ignite engine to the Frostbite engine. We discuss what this might mean for the NBA Live series moving forward.
  • We remind PlayStation Plus subscribers to pick up the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K16 via June’s Instant Game Collection, if they don’t already own it, or would like to double-dip.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: 2K Pro-Am frustration, Stephen Curry in NBA Live 95, and more MyLEAGUE plans.
  • Moving on to the real NBA, we recap the end of the Golden State Warriors/Oklahoma City Thunder clash, and look ahead to the NBA Finals.
  • Do we think that Kevin Durant will be moving on from the Thunder, following their collapse and disappointing elimination in the Western Conference Finals?
  • We briefly touch on the fatal shooting of Bryce Dejean-Jones.
  • Episode #161 of the NLSC Podcast ends with this week’s Bold Predictions.

NBA 2K16 Available Through PlayStation Plus in June

Stephen Curry shoots the basketball in NBA 2K16

If you have a PlayStation 4 and have been holding out on picking up NBA 2K16, or you’ve been playing the PC version and would just like to double-dip on PS4, now’s your chance. PlayStation Plus subscribers will soon be able to pick up the game at no extra cost, as it will be available in June’s Instant Game Collection lineup.

Note that NBA 2K16 is a 40+ GB download, so make sure that you have sufficient hard drive space, and if you’re on a capped Internet plan, enough data. As with all games that are made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, you can also choose to simply add the game to your collection, and download it at a later time. It will remain in your collection and available to play, as long as you have an active PlayStation Plus subscription.

If you do decide to pick up NBA 2K16 through this offer, feel free to share your impressions and experiences here in the NLSC Forum. Please note that the PS4 version does not support any external modding, though there are quite a few custom rosters available through 2K Share. If you’d like to play with the special roster in which Stephen Curry is rated 99 Overall, I’ve shared it under the names “Curry 99 – Official” (the main official roster) and “Curry 99 – Injury-Free” (an injury-free version). If you’re on PC and missed out on that roster, I’ve shared it there as well.

NBA 2K17 Cover Player Announcement on June 1st

Could NBA 2K16 cover player Stephen Curry also appear on the NBA 2K17 cover?

Visual Concepts has announced that the NBA 2K17 cover player will be revealed on June 1st. The announcement will coincide with the grand final of the NBA 2K16 Road to the Finals tournament between the Drewkerbockers and GFG, and will also see the release of new Locker Codes.

Back in April, a special Legend Edition of NBA 2K17 featuring Kobe Bryant on the cover was announced, along with its pre-order bonuses. I’ve also speculated on a few future cover players in a Friday Five column back in March, and I still feel that there’s a strong possibility that Stephen Curry will be on the cover for the second year in a row. It would certainly make sense, given the Golden State Warriors’ historic season, but we’ll have to wait until next week to find out. With 2K’s Tweet promising “much more”, I would also expect that some information about further pre-order bonuses will be revealed.

In the meantime, we have a few days to speculate. Who do you think will be appearing on the NBA 2K17 cover? Stephen Curry? The Warriors’ starting five? Perhaps Russell Westbrook will be jumping ship? Have your say in the comments section below, as well as in this thread in the Forum. Thanks to zzcoolj21 for the heads up!
