Monday Tip-Off: 30 Shots from Mid-Court in NBA 2K17

Shooting from mid-court on MyCOURT in NBA 2K17

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games.

I hope that everyone is enjoying the holiday season, and managed to catch a couple of the Christmas Day games! As we wrap up the year here at the NLSC, I thought that I’d have some fun with this week’s Monday Tip-Off, and set myself a challenge in NBA 2K17. While shooting around in MyCOURT, I attempted three sets of thirty three-pointers from mid-court: thirty using the Shoot Button, thirty with the Shot Stick down, and thirty with the Shot Stick up. With the relatively low three-point ratings of a Playmaker point guard, and no Limitless Range Badge to help me out, would I be able to knock down some really long bombs with any kind of consistency?

Let’s take a look and find out just how many threes I was able to make from mid-court, and which method seemed to work best for me. Watch below, or tune in here over on our YouTube channel if you can’t see the embedded video.

Want to try out this challenge yourself? If you do give it a shot, be sure to post your results (and a link, if you make a video) in the comments section below, or join in the discussion in this thread over in the NBA 2K17 section of the NLSC Forum. I’m interested to see how much of an impact higher ratings have on mid-court heaves, and just how “limitless” the Limitless Range Badge really is! Have fun with the challenge, and thanks for checking out Monday Tip-Off throughout 2016; more columns, videos, and other fun stuff will be coming your way every Monday in 2017!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #190

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #190 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! It’s our 2016 Year in Review episode, as we’ll be taking a short break before resuming our digital broadcasting duties in early January. Thank you to everyone who has tuned into the NLSC Podcast throughout the year; we greatly appreciate the support!

On this week’s show…

  • We tip things off by talking about our Basketball Game of the Year. Or, in other words, which game we’ve enjoyed the most out of the three that we’ve been playing regularly at some point over the past twelve months.
  • There’s been some interesting and surprising news and events in 2016, both in basketball gaming and the real NBA. We recap some of the major stories, including NBA Live 17’s delay, the mixture of controversy and exciting details during the NBA 2K17 preview season, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ championship, the retirement of several big names, and more.
  • Back in June, we had a stressful time here at the NLSC when it looked like we might have to scale back or even shut down operations after our former host informed us that they were closing up shop. Fortunately, we found a new home and expect to be around for a while yet. Thank you to everyone who has donated to the hosting fund, or continues to support the site in other ways!
  • As 2016 draws to a close, we look ahead to 2017. What do we want to achieve next year? What are some of the things that we have planned? We have a few ideas, and hope that you’ll stick around for the ride!

The Sunday Substitute: Getting Sucked Into MyTEAM…Again

The week is in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter, which means it’s time for the Sunday Substitute! It’s the article where I get some valuable minutes while the star is resting on the bench. I might not have the time to do this every week, but I like to think I’m still making a contribution to the team. Today’s subject is MyTEAM in NBA 2K17 and why I’ve become addicted to the mode once again.

After my experience with NBA 2K16, I constantly told myself I wouldn’t get sucked into MyTEAM in NBA 2K17. The amount of money I spent buying packs (yes, I spent real money), the lack of value in those packs, and the amount of times I drew Jarnell Stokes deterred me. I was resolute; MyTEAM would not get me in NBA 2K17!

Sure, I played the mode casually here and there, completing Domination and the odd challenge, but I thought I was doing okay. I wasn’t hooked. But in the past week and a half, MyTEAM has consumed my 2K experience once again. I completed every Weekly Challenge and every Moments Challenge I was eligible for, as well finishing Historic Domination.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #189

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #189 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! News is slowing down with the holiday season upon us, but Arcane and I still have a few things to talk about this week, including another exciting win in 2K Pro-Am, further thoughts on Patch 1.07 for NBA 2K17, and the passing of a broadcasting legend.

On this week’s show…

  • Patch 1.07 is out now for the PC and Xbox One versions of NBA 2K17. Once again, we can’t help but remark on the difference in size between the three patches, despite them all containing the same content and fixes.
  • The next eSports tournament for NBA 2K17 has officially been announced, with another $250,000 up for grabs. We’re not able to take part, but that might actually be for the best.
  • In Our Week in Basketball Gaming: a clutch victory with unexpected heroics in 2K Pro-Am, and dusting off a couple of classics.
  • The NBA and Players Union have come to terms on a new agreement, thankfully avoiding a lockout at the end of the season (or so it would seem).
  • We wrap up Episode #189 of the NLSC Podcast with a discussion of the late Craig Sager, and some of the beautiful tributes from players, coaches, and broadcasters in the wake of his passing.

NBA 2K17 Patch 1.07 Out Now on PC & Xbox One

NBA 2K17: Paul George

Patch 1.07 has finally come through for the PC and Xbox One versions of NBA 2K17. The update should begin downloading automatically as long as you’re connected to the Internet, but if it’s not showing up, try restarting Steam or your console.

The PC patch is 299 MB in size, while the Xbox One patch weighs in at 3.5 GB, though there’s no difference in the content of the updates. It would appear that Patch 1.07 is primarily an update for the upcoming eSports tournaments, as no new patch notes regarding additional gameplay tweaks have been added since the update came through on PlayStation 4. In case you missed our previous bulletin, the patch notes are as follows:

  • Support for the NBA 2K17 European All-Star Tournament as well as the forthcoming NBA 2K17 All-Star Tournament.
  • Performance increase for users playing in the Old Town, Sunset Beach, and Ante-Up parks.
  • Reduced the effectiveness of shooting after excessive dribbling to achieve better game balance.

Once again, if you have any observations or impressions of Patch 1.07 that you’d like to share, feel free to post them in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion in this thread in the NBA 2K17 section of the NLSC Forum.

Monday Tip-Off: Nothing’s Coming Up THRILLHO

NLSC Thrillho in a 2K Pro-Am game in NBA 2K17

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games.

Yes, I’m going to talk about 2K Pro-Am again, and the ongoing attempts of NLSC THRILLHO to unlock logo importing. As I’ve mentioned in previous articles and on the NLSC Podcast, we’ve been enjoying the mode enough to get online for several sessions per week, but we’ve also had our fair share of frustrating moments. While we have to take responsibility for some of them – we’ve definitely made our fair share of mistakes, after all – there have been times when it’s felt like the game is out to get us. Maybe it’s the “NBA Live Series Center” text on our court; perhaps we should change that, if we want fairer treatment?

In all seriousness, I’ve made a point of saving clips of many of those moments, usually for the purposes of bug reports and Wishlist feedback. However, it’s gotten to the point where I can put together a “Shaqtin’ a Fool” type of reel, showcasing the times where NBA 2K17 made our jaws drop for all the wrong reasons. Since THRILLHO is a blatant reference to The Simpsons, it only made sense to title it after another memorable Milhouse quote. Without any further ado, please enjoy a highlight reel of the best of our worst, from bloopers to bugs, and several other frustrating and bizarre moments in between!

For some of the more positive moments we’ve had with NLSC THRILLHO, be sure to check out this thread in the NBA 2K17 section of the Forum. We’ll be posting more highlights there as soon as possible. Stay tuned for other video content as well, including Wayback Wednesday retrospectives, commentary in Monday Tip-Off, and a few other features that I hope you’ll enjoy.

NBA 2K17 Patch 1.07 Notes Revealed

Cover player Paul George dunks the basketball in NBA 2K17

2K Sports have finally posted the patch notes for Patch 1.07 for NBA 2K17, which was released yesterday on PlayStation 4. In a stark contrast to the usual laundry list of fixes, only three major changes to the game are noted:

  • Support for the NBA 2K17 European All-Star Tournament as well as the forthcoming NBA 2K17 All-Star Tournament.
  • Performance increase for users playing in the Old Town, Sunset Beach, and Ante-Up parks.
  • Reduced the effectiveness of shooting after excessive dribbling to achieve better game balance.

It remains to be seen whether the patch notes will be updated with further details, as it seems strange that it would take over 24 hours for 2K to post such a small amount of information on the patch. Of course, it could just be that Patch 1.07 is primarily about updating the game for the upcoming eSports tournaments.

In any event, I’ve added the patch notes to this thread in the NLSC Forum, as well as our resource on NBA 2K17 patches here in the Wiki. There’s still no word on when the patch will come through on PC and Xbox One, but once again, we’ll post any information once it becomes available. If you have any thoughts on the patch, or notice any other under-the-hood tweaks that seem to have been made, feel free to share your impressions with us.

NBA 2K17 Patch 1.07 Released on PlayStation 4

LeBron James vs. Carmelo Anthony in NBA 2K17

Patch 1.07 is now available for the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K17. It will come through automatically as long as your console is connected to the Internet; if you run into any problems, try restarting your PS4. Patch 1.07 weighs in at 7.5 GB, so also make sure that you have enough hard drive space available.

There’s no word on when the patch will hit PC and Xbox One, but based on the last couple of title updates for NBA 2K17, it hopefully won’t be too much longer. Patches 1.05 and 1.06 were both released on all three platforms within 24 hours, so with any luck, the same will hold true for Patch 1.07.

At this time, we’re still waiting for 2K to release detailed patch notes. Gameplay Director Mike Wang (aka Beluba) has mentioned a couple of tweaks in a Tweet however, noting that over-dribbling will result in lower field goal percentages, and that contested three-pointers will also be nerfed in the latest tuning update.

We’ll be sure to post more information as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, feel free to share your observations and opinions on Patch 1.07 in the comments section below, as well as in this thread in the NBA 2K17 section of the NLSC Forum.
