NLSC Podcast – Episode #218

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #218 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! With the preview season well and truly underway, Arcane and I have plenty of things to talk about this week, including the NBA Live 18 pre-order bonuses, the latest trailers and developer blogs for NBA 2K18, and some news that (of course) broke shortly after we finished recording Episode #217.

On this week’s show…

  • Since its release, the NBA Live 18 demo has been receiving some patches, so it would appear that the experience will continue to be tweaked based on user feedback. Hopefully, this will also bode well for the inevitable Day One patch.
  • The One Edition of NBA Live 18 has been confirmed, and it includes a couple of in-game pre-order bonuses, as well as a 33% discount from participating retailers.
  • 2K Sports dropped the “Get Shook” trailer, along with a developer blog describing the improvements to gameplay in NBA 2K18. It sounds like the team has been focusing on the right things this year.
  • A trailer and developer blog for MyTEAM in NBA 2K18 has also been released. The trailer itself was a little cringe-worthy, but overall the news is good there too.
  • All-Time Teams and sixteen new Classic Teams will be added in NBA 2K18. We share our thoughts on the new classic teams that have been revealed so far.
  • We wrap up Episode #218 of the NLSC Podcast with Our Week in Basketball Gaming, which has seen our 2K Pro-Am season for NBA 2K17 approach its final few sessions, and more grinding for cards in NBA Playgrounds. We also look ahead to our future weeks of basketball gaming.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #217

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #217 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane and I as we provide our impressions of the NBA Live 18 Demo and Companion App, share our thoughts on some other NBA Live 18 and NBA 2K18 news items from the past week, and talk about our recent activities on the virtual hardwood.

On this week’s show…

  • Shortly after we finished recording last week’s NLSC Podcast, the Companion App for NBA Live 18 was released. How does it compare to the NBA Live 16 app, and how did our face scans turn out?
  • The NBA Live 18 Demo is out now. In one of our longest segments to date, we provide some in-depth initial impressions of our first hands-on look at this year’s game from EA Sports.
  • NBA Live 18 is now available to pre-order, with a 33% discount on offer. There also appears to be a Deluxe edition of the game, though no further details are available at this time.
  • Wrapping up the NBA Live 18 news, the full soundtrack has been released. Notably, some big names have contributed tracks this year.
  • The second Developer Diary for NBA 2K18 provided us with a look at the gameplay, as well as an insight into the aesthetic improvements in this year’s game. We also have some hands-on impressions from the community, more screenshots, and mention of amiibo compatibility.
  • We’ll be getting another edition of The Prelude before the release of NBA 2K18, but it’s reportedly different to last year’s demo. Naturally, that news invites speculation.
  • Episode #217 of the NLSC Podcast wraps up with Our Week in Basketball Gaming, which included a troubleshooting fail (albeit with a happy ending), a brewing rivalry for NLSC THRILLHO, and an elusive PlayStation Trophy.

Latest NBA 2K17 Offseason Roster Updates (PC & PS4)

2017 Offseason Roster

It’s been a couple of weeks, so let’s get caught up on the latest offseason roster updates for the PC and PlayStation 4 versions of NBA 2K17!

First of all, the 2017-18 NLSC Realistic Community Roster for PC has now been released. Like its 2016-17 counterpart, the roster features updated ratings, coaching profiles, Badges, and other attributes in order to create the most realistic experience possible. It also features the latest 2017 offseason rosters, including transactions and the Class of 2017 rookies. Look for NLSC 17/18 by I Hate Mondays in the Roster Creator, and see this topic for the required artwork and further information. The roster is updated as of August 4th, 2017.

Shuajota also continues to update his offseason roster for the PC version of NBA 2K17, with the latest version of the DNA Ultimate Roster being accurate as of August 1st. You’ll find it under the name DNA Ultimate Roster 17-18, shared by the user KraZStaR. Once again, there are required art updates to download, so check out this topic for more details.

If you’re looking for offseason roster updates for the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K17, you’ll be pleased to know that SkillzFromThe6 is still hard at work. In addition to keeping up with the latest transactions, he’s adding a lot of players to the free agent pool. Find his update under the name Offseason Roster 2K17, shared by SkillazKill. You can also check out the latest previews of the roster here.

Unfortunately, no one has shared any updates for the Xbox One version of NBA 2K17 in our community as yet. As a general reminder though, our Modding section is open to all platforms, so if you do have an offseason roster update for the X1 version of NBA 2K17, by all means feel free to share it with us. I’ll be sure to make a note of it in our next release round-up. In the meantime, thanks to the creators of all these great updates for their hard work and dedication!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #216

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #216 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane and I as we discuss the news of the past week, including the NBA Live 18 demo and WNBA teams, the NBA Playgrounds Roster Unlock DLC, and a couple of NBA 2K18 snippets. And as always, we tell a few stories about our past week in basketball gaming.

On this week’s show…

  • The NBA Live 18 demo will be coming out next week, August 11th. We’ve also found out a little more about The Streets portion of The One.
  • EA Sports has also announced that all twelve WNBA teams will be included in NBA Live 18. We feel it’s a pretty good idea, and speculate on the future of additional content in NBA Live.
  • The latest NBA 2K18 screenshots are looking very good, with some noticeable improvements to a couple of players. For what it’s worth, we’ve also found out a few more player ratings.
  • A couple of interviews have provided us with some snippets of information regarding improvements to gameplay and MyPLAYER Archetypes in NBA 2K18, as well a few additional details on the new story in MyGM.
  • Saber Interactive has released a Roster Unlock for NBA Playgrounds. The idea definitely has merit and it’s something gamers have been asking for, but not everyone is happy about it.
  • NBA 2K17 is the highest selling Take Two sports title to date. It’s also raking in higher than expected revenue from microtransactions.
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming has included some fun moments and satisfying victories in 2K Pro-Am and MyPARK, and more enjoyment out of an old school fantasy approach in Play Now.
  • We wrap up Episode #216 of the NLSC Podcast with some NBL talk. Yes, really!

Monday Tip-Off: Double Overtime THRILLHO

NLSC THRILLHO Pre-Game in NBA 2K17's 2K Pro-Am

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games. This week, I’m tipping things off with a video feature, specifically a recap and highlight reel from one of NLSC THRILLHO’s recent games in NBA 2K17’s 2K Pro-Am.

As Arcane and I discussed in Episode #215 of the NLSC Podcast, we recently had a very enjoyable session of 2K Pro-Am that included an exciting double overtime victory. Despite a few mistakes here and there, Arcane, zzcoolj21 and I were able to eke out the win for NLSC THRILLHO, producing some highlight plays along the way. I naturally made sure to capture the footage, beginning with zz’s three-pointer that sent the game into overtime, and have put together a video recap/highlight reel of what turned out to be a very enjoyable and rewarding game. Watch it below, or catch it here on the NLSC YouTube channel if you’re unable to see the embedded video.

I hope you enjoyed it; it’s certainly fun for me to watch again! I’d like to get back to creating some more video content, and have a couple of ideas for a weekly video feature that I’m hoping to launch soon. I also hope to shake things up with a few more videos here and there for Monday Tip-Off, Wayback Wednesday, and perhaps even The Friday Five. In the meantime, I’ve been uploading clips from the NLSC Podcast to our YouTube channel, spotlighting some major discussions. Stay tuned for more articles, videos, and other original content, and be sure to check out this previous feature for some of NLSC THRILLHO’s more frustrating moments in 2K Pro-Am.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #214

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #214 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Arcane and I as we discuss the latest NBA 2K18 tidbits including player ratings and the newly announced soundtrack, catch up on a couple of other recent news stories, and recap our past week in basketball gaming.

On this week’s show…

  • A recent promo shoot for NBA 2K18 has revealed some early player ratings. The players themselves were on hand to hear them, and not all of them were pleased with what they heard!
  • The soundtrack for NBA 2K18 has been revealed. We’re neither thrilled nor upset with the selection, but we do wish that we were getting some more substantial details about this year’s game.
  • A significant content update is in the pipeline for NBA Playgrounds. New tournaments seem quite likely, but could we also see a slam dunk contest and three-point shootout added to the game?
  • Five copies of NBA Elite 11 have been listed on eBay for $30,000 US. Glancing at our bank accounts, we might have to pass on making an offer. We do ponder how much we’d pay for a copy, though.
  • Our Week in Basketball gaming included a so-so run in 2K Pro-Am, and some head-to-head games against each other in NBA Playgrounds.
  • Paul Pierce has signed with the Boston Celtics, in order to retire a Boston Celtic. It seems to be a new trend with retiring players, and honestly, we don’t mind it.
  • We wrap up Episode #214 of the NLSC Podcast with some thoughts on the new jersey designations that the NBA will be using moving forward.

The Friday Five: 5 Overpowered Badges in NBA 2K17

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. The feature is presented as either a list of five items, or in the form of a Top 5 countdown. This week’s Five is a list of five Badges in NBA 2K17 that are overpowered.

Badges have become an important gameplay mechanic in NBA 2K. Like their predecessors, Signature Skills, they provide players with additional traits and abilities in order to realistically represent their performance and playing style. They cover a range of offensive and defensive abilities, as well as mental traits. If you’re playing MyCAREER, 2K Pro-Am, or MyPARK, attaining Badges is absolutely crucial if you want your player to be as effective as possible. In NBA 2K17, a Gold or Hall of Fame level Badge makes a huge difference in being able to finish in traffic, knock down long threes, thread the needle on difficult passes, and so on.

As I mentioned in my Wayback Wednesday retrospective on Freestyle Superstars, concepts such as Badges represent continued innovation in terms of differentiating between players beyond their common ratings, and representing individual styles of play. While Badges have generally yielded more realistic results than Freestyle Superstars, at times they can be just as cheesy in their own right. A few Badges in NBA 2K17 are definitely overpowered, and could stand to be fine tuned for NBA 2K18. These aren’t the only problematic Badges, of course, but they are five prominent examples that immediately come to mind for me.

2017 Offseason Roster Updates for NBA 2K17 (PC & PS4)

Roster Updates for NBA 2K17 (SkillzFromThe6)

While we wait for more news on NBA 2K18 and NBA Live 18, a lot of gamers are eager to play with updated rosters for NBA 2K17. Fortunately, dedicated members of our modding community are helping out in that regard, with detailed 2017 offseason roster updates for the PC and PlayStation 4 versions of the game.

As we’ve covered in recent episodes of the NLSC Podcast, a team of modders including I Hate MondaysbluejaybrandonKevmireJEDL, and rovert22044 have been working on the NLSC Realistic Community Roster. The project consists of both final 2017 season rosters and updated 2018 season rosters, with the 2017 roster being released last week. Both roster updates include re-worked player ratings, Badges, rotations, and more, for the most realistic experience possible. Slider settings and compatible 2017 Draft Classes are also available. You’ll find the roster shared under the name “NLSC 16/17”, by “I Hate Mondays”. For more information, and download links for the compatible art updates, see this thread. The team is working on getting the 2018 roster updates out as soon as possible.

For those who’d like to play with updated rosters on PC right now, Shuajota has been working on the DNA Ultimate Roster, which includes offseason transactions and the new rookies. 2017 D-League rosters have also been added. You can find the roster shared as “DNA Ultimate Roster 17-18”, by “KraZStaR”. More information, previews, and download links for the art updates can be found in this thread.

If you’re looking for roster updates for the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K17, SkillzFromThe6 is hard at work on his offseason roster. His updates are coming through very quickly, as you can see from the previews being posted in this thread. If you’d like to download the roster, search for “Offseason Roster 2K17”, by “SkillazKill”.

Please note that all roster updates need to be downloaded through the in-game sharing functionality rather than the old-fashioned method, which is why I wanted to post a bulletin highlighting these recent releases. Please also note that we do not support the pirated version of the game in this community, and requesting help with it is grounds for an immediate permanent ban in the Forum. Our policy on this is clear and well-established, so if need be, be sure to brush up on our rules here.

Beyond roster updates, other people are making some great mods including historical and concept rosters, realistic faces, body models, shoes, jerseys, and courts, and more. Stay tuned for more File Additions bulletins, and be sure to keep an eye on the NBA 2K17 Releases & Previews section of the NLSC Forum. A huge thank you to all the modders who have taken the time to create these great mods and updates for their fellow basketball gamers!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #213

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #213 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! The initial flurry of offseason movement is over, and we’re still waiting for the preview season to get into gear, but Arcane and I do have a few things to talk about this week. Join us as we discuss the latest NBA Live 18 rumours, catch up on what’s going on in our modding community, and reminisce about a fun week of basketball gaming.

On this week’s show…

  • It seems that we can mark August 11th on our calendars as being a significant date in the preview season for NBA Live 18. Current speculation is that it’s when the demo will drop, but we also discuss a couple of other possibilities.
  • The modding community has been doing some great work with final 2017 season and 2017 offseason rosters for NBA 2K17 (both on PC and PS4), as well as NBA 2K13 and NBA 2K14. We recap some of the latest releases, and works in progress.
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming included a very satisfying session of 2K Pro-Am, a couple of MyCAREER games, some online head-to-head with an old friend, and grinding for packs in NBA Playgrounds.
  • We wrap up Episode #213 of the NLSC Podcast with a reminder about some NLSC merch, available through Arcane Apparel!

Monday Tip-Off: Ideas for 2K Pro-Am Customisation in NBA 2K18

Court Customisation in NBA 2K17's 2K Pro-Am

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games. This week, I’m tipping things off with a few ideas for customising 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K18.

Following a few frustrating sessions of 2K Pro-Am as of late, NLSC THRILLHO enjoyed a good run last Friday night. Arcane, Valor, and I were able to go 4-1, finishing up the evening with a payback victory over the lone team that defeated us. We also each had some good individual games, padding our stats here and there. It was refreshing to have a session where everything was clicking for us as a team, and we didn’t feel robbed by the way the games played out, at least for the most part. A slow start last year and some rough weeks have left us with a losing record overall though, as we’ve stuck with our original squad in order to keep our custom branding.

Of course, even though our record isn’t impressive, we’d like to think that our branding is among the best that we’ve come across. Arcane designed our uniforms and court, as well as our sideline banners with all their Milhouse and Thrillhouse references. Unfortunately, it took us quite a while to get to the point of being able to customise all of our branding, due to the changes that Visual Concepts made with the new rank system in NBA 2K17’s 2K Pro-Am. Even though the approach does have merit, there are some changes I’d like to see made to the way that customisation is handled in 2K Pro-Am this year in NBA 2K18.
