NBA 2K18 Patch 1.08 Released; New Historical Players Added

Kevin Martin on the All-Time Kings in NBA 2K18

On the heels of Patch 1.07’s release, Patch 1.08 has been pushed through for NBA 2K18. There aren’t any patch notes as yet, but it can be assumed that the update is a hotfix for a couple of issues caused by 1.07. The update is currently only available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and should come through automatically as long as your console is connected to the Internet. If you encounter any issues, try restarting. As of this post, the PC and Switch are still awaiting Patches 1.07 and 1.08.

UPDATE: The latest patch is now available for the PC version as well.

In other news, the latest roster update has added a few new players to the historical teams. Rashard Lewis joins the All-Time Thunder (owing to his tenure with the Seattle SuperSonics), as well as the All-Time Magic. Kevin Martin is now available on the All-Time Kings, while Donyell Marshall has been added to the 2007 Cleveland Cavaliers. Further details on the ratings changes in the latest roster can be found here over on Operation Sports, courtesy of Mike Stauffer.

I’ll be sure to post a bulletin if any further information on Patch 1.08 is released, as well as any updates on the PC patches. In the meantime, you can check out an update history for NBA 2K18 here in our Wiki. Feel free to add your thoughts on the latest update in the comments below, as well as in this topic in the NBA 2K18 section of the NLSC Forum.

NBA 2K18 Patch 1.07 Released; New Art, General Bug Fixes

NBA 2K18: Damian Lillard vs. Tony Parker

Patch 1.07 has been released for NBA 2K18. As of this post, it is available for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, with the PC and Switch patches coming soon. The new update will be downloaded automatically as long as your system is connected to the Internet; if you encounter any issues, try restarting. I’ll update this bulletin as the other patches are released.

UPDATE: The latest patch is now available for the PC version as well.

The new patch addresses some technical problems, including an issue with the number of timeouts displayed on the scoreboard, incorrect VC earnings, glitches with Two-Way players in MyLEAGUE and MyGM, and game crashes. The custom t-shirt kiosk in The Neighborhood will also be reopening soon.

A few new art updates have also been pushed through with Patch 1.07. Some players have received new hairstyles, including Lonzo Ball, and the courts for the San Antonio Spurs and Portland Trail Blazers have been updated. Please see below for the complete patch notes.

Monday Tip-Off: MyPLAYER Dunk Envy in NBA 2K18

A Dunk in MyCOURT (NBA 2K18)

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games. This week, I’m tipping things off with a few thoughts on something that’s been bothering me in NBA 2K18’s MyCAREER: an inability to dunk.

I know today’s NBA has become about three-pointers. Me, I’m still partial to dunks. It’s a love that carries over to basketball video games, especially when it comes to the career modes. By equipping my player with flashy dunks that I could never perform in real life, I’m able to live out some fantasies on the virtual hardwood. I realise that dunking on every play isn’t exactly sim, and that goes against my usual approach to basketball games. What can I say; it’s fun to dunk as often as possible! Unfortunately, it’s something that I’m missing out on in this year’s MyCAREER mode.

That’s not to say I haven’t been involved in some tremendous slams in some capacity. Consider this moment from a recent one-on-one game against Arcane on MyCOURT:

As a Two-Way Slasher, Arcane is naturally going to have an easier time dunking than my Sharpshooter Playmaker. However, I rarely seem to be able to trigger a dunk, no matter whether it’s MyCAREER, 2K Pro-Am, or The Playground. MyCOURT? No problem. Any of those other game modes? I’m laying it up nine times out of ten, even in situations where I have ample room and sprint. As noted here in the Forum, I don’t seem to have the same problem with a brand new MyPLAYER with the same hybrid Archetype, and I’ve also seen other Sharpshooting Playmakers dunking more often in 2K Pro-Am games. At this point, I’d settle for being able to perform rim grazers!

It seems to be an issue with tendencies for MyPLAYERs created during The Prelude, or at least, before a recent patch that addressed the issue. I’ve contacted 2K Support in the hopes that my original MyPLAYER can be fixed, as I don’t relish the thought of going through the grind again with a new player, nor losing the pre-order bonus clothing (simply due to principle). Assists and threes may be the strengths of my Archetype, but I should at least be able to dunk more often than I do now. With any luck, it’ll all be sorted out soon, and I’ll be making proper use of my flashy dunk packages. Until then, however, I have a serious case of MyPLAYER Dunk Envy.

Monday Tip-Off: The Worst Pass in Playground History

Andrew & Arcane at The Playground (NBA 2K18)

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Start your week here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games. This week, I’m tipping things off with a video of what might just be the worst pass in the history of The Playground and MyPARK, and a few thoughts on the circumstances surrounding it.

As discussed in Episode #230 of the NLSC Podcast, Arcane and I have been heading to The Playground for a few games after wrapping up our sessions of 2K Pro-Am with the NLSC squad. We’ve enjoyed a victory over a couple of Playground veterans, and after donning our Gatorade t-shirts, also managed to rack up five wins to earn some bonus VC. In some respects, our time on the online virtual blacktop in NBA 2K18 has been more enjoyable than our recent Pro-Am games, which have been rather rough. However, there was a moment of particular frustration after the ball was checked to Arcane, and his pass to me went completely awry.

I now present to you what may be the worst pass in the history of The Playground, and indeed, any mode of basketball gaming.

While miscues like that do make basketball games more realistic, I’m not sure that any NBA player would mess up a pass that badly, in that particular situation. It’s one of my main gripes with NBA 2K18’s gameplay, and something that often happens in our online games. In an effort to inject more realism into the experience, errors like that will happen at random, often feeling very artificial and predetermined as a result. Notice how my player doesn’t even try reaching out to catch the pass! We’ve had similar experiences in 2K Pro-Am with players being unable to catch or accurately throw what should be easy passes, time after time.

There is merit in having mistakes and sloppy moments in basketball video games, in order to make them feel more dynamic and realistic. However, in a situation like this, you just end up feeling cheated by the game. Moving forward, I’d like to see miscues and mess-ups handled in a way that feels less canned, and more in tune with both a player’s abilities and the action on the court. The Winner’s Outs rule in 2v2 on The Playground can make things tough enough when you’re facing a couple of cheesy players, without the game being against you as well. As it stands, we definitely found ourselves having a Shaqtin’ a Fool moment on this particular occasion.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #230

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #230 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Without any technical issues to keep us off the air, we’re back to talk about the latest updates for NBA Live 18 and NBA 2K18, share our latest impressions of both games, and catch up on the past couple of weeks in basketball gaming news.

On this week’s show…

  • Patch 1.08 has added comprehensive roster editing to NBA Live 18. We’re certainly surprised, and impressed at how the game has continued to improve since launch.
  • NBA 2K18’s Patch 1.06 has addressed some bugs, but also caused a few more problems. To be honest, we’re still feeling disappointed with this year’s release from Visual Concepts.
  • The qualifying round for the NBA 2K League will be taking place in January. We share our thoughts on what the League might be like, given our experiences with 2K Pro-Am.
  • Several t-shirts have been removed from the kiosk in The Neighborhood, mostly due to trademark and copyright concerns. This has led to some issues with lost VC.
  • A teenager has spent over $17,000 AUS on microtransactions across various games, leading us to once again reflect on their intrusive nature in AAA titles.
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming has seen our frustration with 2K Pro-Am reach its boiling point, an enjoyable victory in The Playground, and possible plans to change up our habits on the virtual hardwood.
  • We wrap up Episode #230 of the NLSC Podcast with some NBA discussion, including recent streaks, and the Jahlil Okafor trade.

New Details on NBA 2K League; Qualifying Round in January

NBA 2K League Qualifying Info

The NBA 2K League, an eLeague based on 2K Pro-Am and officially partnered with the NBA, is set to tip off next year. As such, 2K Sports has put out advanced notice about the qualifying round, which will be taking place January 1st-31st. Brian Mazique has also posted some additional information about the League over on Forbes.com.

Participants must be eighteen years or older, and playing NBA 2K18 on either PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. The qualifying round is open to all skill levels, though you must win 50 games during January in order to be eligible for tryouts. The 50 wins may come as part of a 2K Pro-Am team, Walk-On games, or a combination of the two.

Should you make it through the qualifying rounds and be successful in a tryout, you’ll be drafted by one of the 17 NBA teams participating in the inaugural season of the NBA 2K League. Housing and a “competitive, guaranteed salary” will be provided to League players, who will not play with their regular MyPLAYERs, but rather avatars with ratings close to 90 Overall. The NBA 2K League will also make use of a special build of NBA 2K18 in order to avoid instability.

It will be interesting to see how successful the NBA 2K League turns out to be. As it stands, I’m not sure how closely we’ll be covering the League here on the NLSC once it tips off, but it’s certainly a great opportunity for competitive online basketball gamers. Additional registration and application details are set to be announced at a later date, so if you’re interested, be sure to follow the official NBA 2K League Twitter account, and stay tuned for more information.

Got any thoughts on the forthcoming NBA 2K League? Have your say in the comments section below, and feel free to join in the discussion taking place here in our NBA 2K18 Forum.

Patch 1.06 Released for NBA 2K18; Fixes Various Bugs

NBA 2K18: Paul George

Patch 1.06 has been released for NBA 2K18. The update is currently available for the Xbox One, and will be released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch soon. I’ll update this post as the patch comes through on those platforms.

UPDATE: The PC and PlayStation 4 patches are now available.

The patch addresses various bugs, primarily in MyCAREER and The Neighborhood, as well as the connected modes. The full patch notes are as follows:

  • Trivia will be re-enabled in the 2K Zone in MyCAREER once all consoles have received this update. If you have not yet tried it out, 2K Zone Trivia provides 25 VC for every question you answer correctly!
  • Users will no longer experience a hang when attempting to read texts from Bryan in MyCAREER.
  • Fixed an issue where Bryan would stop sending users texts to pick up their endorsement VC cheques in MyCAREER.
  • Addressed a hang that could occur in the Gatorade Training Facility right before starting an activity.
  • Addressed a case where some users were seeing their custom created shoes appearing differently in-game than how they looked in the editor.
  • The camera will no longer focus on the crowd when play resumes when called right before a free throw in Pro-Am and Play Now Online games.
  • Fixed a case where the playoffs would fail to advance after completing a round during an offline MyCAREER.
  • Squads will now remain intact when choosing to Play Game after completing a Ruffles Tournament game.
  • Michael Jordan’s tongue should now look a little more Mike-like

Feel free to discuss Patch 1.06 in the comments below, as well as in this topic in the NBA 2K18 section of our Forum. You can also find a full update history for NBA 2K18 here in our Wiki.
