From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #455 of the NLSC Podcast!
NBA 2K23 has been out for three months, and the game in its current state is likely what we’re going to have for the rest of its life cycle. As such, this week we’re going in-depth with our definitive review and ranking of NBA 2K23! What are its biggest pros and cons? Where does it rank among the all-time best games in the NBA 2K series? What needs to change in NBA 2K24, and how optimistic are we about the game’s direction? From gameplay to depth and accuracy, to microtransactions and fairness to the gamer, it’s a comprehensive breakdown! We also quiz the community on NBA Live 2003 dunk ratings in this week’s mailbag.

Patch 3.0 has come through for NBA 2K23 on all platforms. As always, it should be downloaded automatically as long as you’re online. If you encounter any issues, try checking for updates manually, or restarting your console or Steam client.
The new patch updates the game for Season 3 in MyTEAM and MyCAREER, which is now underway. It also includes likeness updates for current and former NBA players, makes some minor gameplay tweaks, and resolves a few bugs. Notably, Player Lock has also been disabled in a few online modes in MyTEAM, due to issues with anti-competitive behaviour.
Check out the full releases notes for NBA 2K23 Patch 3.0 below! You’ll also find them in the Current Gen and Next Gen update histories for the game over in our Wiki. Feel free to share your impressions in the comments section, as well as join in the discussion in our NBA 2K23 Forum.
From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #454 of the NLSC Podcast!
As promised last week, we revisited NBA Live 2005, and were reminded of what a great game it was (and still is)! NBA Live 2002, NBA 2K14, and NBA Street Homecourt have also been in the rotation as of late, and they’ve inspired some of our recent YouTube content. We also follow up on last week’s discussion of NBA 2K17 being the last truly great release in the 2K series with our thoughts on whether NBA 2K23 is a return to form, and thus the best game since then. In this week’s mailbag, we’re quizzing the community on the Top 5 players in the original NBA 2K. Not to go all clickbait, but at least one name will definitely surprise you!

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with a PSA about the responsible use of custom images in the various modes of NBA 2K.
It’s easy to take features such as face scanning and custom images for granted, as they’ve been in NBA 2K for years now. In particular, the level of customisation that image uploading facilitates is a clear advantage that NBA 2K’s modes have had over their NBA Live equivalents during the past decade. Sure, it’s fun to get your favourite team’s logos and jerseys for your squad in the card collecting modes, but it’s even better when you can design your own uniforms and use a custom logo! The default expansion team assets are nice, but custom images take things to the next level.
And of course, since those customisation features are already in the game, they’re naturally a part of creating your own Pro-Am squad as well. In fact, it’s one of the features that have separated it from NBA Live’s online team play modes. Just as in MyTEAM, being able to use your own logo and decorate your arena with unique assets adds a personal touch that current and historical NBA branding just can’t offer. Sometimes custom images have been more difficult to unlock than they should be, but at the same time, I can’t blame 2K for making us jump through hoops. To that end, I’d like to put out this PSA to be more responsible and mature about custom images.

As I’ve mentioned in articles and on the NLSC Podcast, traditionally I wasn’t ever a big online or competitive gamer. I mostly played franchise and later career modes, or co-operatively with my cousin. However, after Kenny invited Arcane and I to play 2K Pro-Am in NBA 2K16, I was hooked. This led to the creation of our squad – NLSC THRILLHO – in NBA 2K17.
We had an amazing year, playing over 500 games together. However, disappointment with NBA 2K18 and changes to the format of team Pro-Am in NBA 2K19 combined to put an end to that experience. It hasn’t been until NBA 2K23 that enough of us are playing the latest game and have put the necessary work into our MyPLAYERs to be able to play together online again. We’ve already had a number of sessions of 3v3 Pro-Am, and they’ve produced some fun moments and enjoyable games. I’ve put together a highlight reel from some of our early wins, as NLSC THRILLHO rides again!
Once again, Dee4Three has been spearheading our efforts to create more video content, and I’m looking to get more involved in it as well. To that end, be sure to check out and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more basketball gaming highlights! We’ve also got some other features planned, so stay tuned.
Today’s NBA 2K23 mod releases include the latest jersey updates from Pinoy21, and a Jonquel Jones face update by Bassman58. Looyh has also released a new version of his roster editor. Download all of the latest NBA 2K23 mod releases at the links below!

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #449 of the NLSC Podcast!
NBA Live 99 PC is arguably one of the most underrated basketball video games of all-time, and we had a blast revisiting it using a 2002 roster update! In addition to giving NBA Live 99 PC its due, our session also inspired us to reflect on the Boston Celtics and Michael Jordan-led Washington Wizards of the 2002 season. We also discuss the latest NBA 2K23 patch, which thankfully appears to have done more good than harm. There’s also some recent retro basketball game pickups to share, including Arch Rivals for the NES, the later NBA 2K titles for PlayStation 2, and a few other classics and rarities that will undoubtedly appeal to our fellow enthusiastic collectors and retro gamers.

Patch 2.0 is out now for NBA 2K23 on all platforms! It should come through automatically as long as you’re online. If it doesn’t, try checking for updates manually, or restarting your console or Steam client.
Notably, Patch 2.0 is the first update for NBA 2K23 to feature any release notes. Previous updates were essentially hotfixes for various issues, with no changes to gameplay. Conversely, the new update addresses some gameplay issues in addition to fixing bugs, as well as adding likeness updates for several NBA, WNBA, and historical players.
You can find the full patch notes below, and I’ve also created pages in our Wiki to log the update history for Current Gen and Next Gen. Feel free to add your thoughts in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion here in our NBA 2K23 Forum!
After conquering the Southeast Division in NBA 2K23 MyTEAM Domination, Dee4Three has moved on to challenge the teams of the Southwest! Once again, he’s uploading highlights from his journey through the mode to the NLSC YouTube channel.
As you can see, Dee has switched his squad’s branding from the Seattle SuperSonics to the Phoenix Suns of the 1980s. Although they’re now wearing different garb, his team featuring the likes of Michael Jordan, Xavier McDaniel, Dee Brown, Jason Williams, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Terry Cummings, and Shaquille O’Neal, are certainly in familiar form! Dee’s highlights include a bit of everything, from poster dunks and pinpoint passing to sharpshooting from downtown and other great plays. Additionally, all three difficulty levels are represented. Watch the reel below, or catch it here over on YouTube!
If you’ve also been playing MyTEAM Domination in NBA 2K23, share your experiences in the comments below, or join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum! As I noted in previous posts, Dee has been spearheading an increase in video content for us for more than a year now, with efforts that of course include the Top 10 Plays of the Week. Be sure to subscribe to our channel for even more basketball gaming content moving forward!
Today’s additions to our Downloads database are exciting developments for future NBA 2K23 mods! Looyh has released the eagerly-anticipated roster editor for NBA 2K23, and a roster modding plugin for the NBA2K_Hook tool. DoctahTobogganMD has also released some resources for retro players from Season 1 in MyTEAM. Pick up the roster editor and the other new NBA 2K23 modding utilities at the links below!
