NLSC YouTube Highlights Round-Up

NLSC YouTube Highlights Round-Up

In addition to the Top 10 Plays of the Week and full episodes of our podcast, we also upload other basketball gaming videos to the NLSC YouTube channel! I’ve fallen behind on sharing the uploads here on the NLSC itself, and to that end, I’ll be making a better effort to post bulletins featuring new videos moving forward.

That’s because in addition to curating the weekly Top 10 countdown, Dee4Three has been very prolific in uploading excellent gameplay highlights for a variety of titles, in addition of course to NBA 2K23. This includes his MyTEAM Domination highlights, as he’s currently working his way through the mode. You’ll also find playlists featuring our Parsec tournaments, co-op and competitive sessions, and more.

I’ve also put together a highlight reel from my first session in The Rec in NBA 2K23, in which Valor and I squadded up with a number of random teammates; some better than others! Kenny also joined us for some 3v3 Pro-Am games, and I’ll have a highlight reel from that session uploaded very soon. In short, please subscribe to our channel for some fantastic basketball gaming content, and in case those YouTube notifications don’t work, keep an eye out here for bulletins about our future uploads! For now, you can catch up on the most recent uploads to the NLSC YouTube channel below.

Monday Tip-Off: Who Put Basketball In This NBA Game?!?

Monday Tip-Off: Who Put Basketball In This NBA Game?!?

We’re at midcourt, and the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Join me as I begin the week here at the NLSC with my opinions and commentary on basketball gaming topics, as well as tales of the fun I’ve been having on the virtual hardwood. This week, I’m tipping things off with some thoughts on people who dismiss the importance of realistically depicting basketball in an NBA game.

A few years back, I wrote an article questioning whether basketball gamers were still simheads. It’s one of those topics that I always want to approach carefully, so as not to fall victim to the same gatekeeping nonsense that I despise. While some games are for the “strictly hardcore” crowd, most genres should be welcoming to everyone. That doesn’t mean they can’t have a learning curve and competitive play, but they should be accessible to newcomers, and fun for all. Furthermore, it’s vital that a game like NBA 2K is able to cater to different tastes, within reason.

However, we’ve reached the stage where prominent voices in the community – and their fanbases – are actively pushing back on the realistic depiction of basketball in an NBA game. As someone who has been playing hoops games for decades and seen the rise of NBA 2K and the fall of NBA Live owing to their respective abilities to deliver sim titles that are both fun and realistic, it’s dismaying to see some truly terrible takes receive the amount of support that they do. The notion that an NBA sim game doesn’t need to strive for any sort of realism or basketball strategy is absurd. It speaks to the downside of NBA 2K’s broadening popularity, and catering to a wider audience.

NLSC Podcast #445: Is NBA 2K23 The Greediest 2K Ever?

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #445 of the NLSC Podcast!

The greediness and pushiness of microtransactions in NBA 2K23 is under fire this past week, as the honeymoon period with the game appears to be drawing to a close. We’re certainly inclined to agree with that critique, though it’s disheartening to see people shilling and shouting down valid criticism. While we’re still enjoying NBA 2K23, there are concerning issues from gameplay balance online, to the expense of MyTEAM packs and upgrades in MyCAREER. Meanwhile, the quickness in patching a happy accident with MyNBA Eras rosters while leaving other issues untouched highlights a continued lack of goodwill. We also recall a cool feature in the Japanese-exclusive NBA Starting Five 2005, and open up the mailbag to get the community’s thoughts on the approach to VC in NBA 2K23, as well as find out what they’ve been playing so far.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! As always, thanks for tuning in, and go get buckets!

NLSC Podcast #444: Further NBA 2K23 Impressions & Gatekeeping Nonsense

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #444 of the NLSC Podcast!

After a full week with NBA 2K23, what are our thoughts on both versions of the game? We’ve got further impressions to share – both positive and negative – about gameplay, MyNBA Eras, and MyTEAM. One of us headed to The Rec to check out the state of the online scene, and in what may come as a surprising development, we could be seeing the return of NLSC THRILLHO! The addition of Semi-Pro difficulty leads to a discussion of preferred settings, and their impact on first impressions. We also reflect on the interesting use of Legends in NBA ShootOut 2004, and respond to a particularly nasty and condescending Tweet about playing video games as an adult. In this week’s mailbag, our listeners share their thoughts on NBA 2K23 so far.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! NBA 2K23 is out now worldwide, and we’ve been spending plenty of time with both versions of the game since they launched! As such, this week’s episode is all about taking a deep dive into our first impressions of NBA 2K23, and discussing the pros and cons as we currently see them. From gameplay, graphics, and the Jordan Challenge, to MyNBA Eras, MyTEAM, and roster accuracy, we’ve got plenty of thoughts to share with our fellow basketball gamers. We also compare the Next Gen and Current Gen versions, discuss the forthcoming modding season as it tips off, and share our outlook on playing NBA 2K23 consistently in the months to come.

NBA 2K23 Released; Our Facilities, Season 1 Information

NBA 2K23 Released

2K Day is upon us once again, as NBA 2K23 has been released worldwide! With Season 1 in MyCAREER and MyTEAM already underway, 2K has posted a blog with an overview of what to expect.

Now that the PC version of NBA 2K23 has been released, another year of modding has also tipped off. Indeed, looyh has already shared an updated version of NBA 2K_Hook, an essential utility for using mods. As always, I’d like to remind our community about our various modding facilities. We provide free mod hosting to the community via our Downloads database, and you’ll find newly-added sections for NBA 2K23 here. There’s also a Modding section among our NBA 2K23 forums. This board is for all releases, previews, and any other topics related to NBA 2K23 mods. There’s also a section for Tutorials & FAQs, which should be filling up with resources very soon.

Obviously, modding is a huge part of what we do here at the NLSC. However, I encourage everyone to make use of the general discussion board for NBA 2K23 as well. Whether it’s sharing fun moments, offering up your impressions, asking for advice related to gameplay, or anything else about NBA 2K23, by all means join in the conversation!

Dee and I will be sharing our impressions of NBA 2K23 on the next NLSC Podcast, and it’s also my intention to write a full review this year. In addition to covering further news and events, and of course supporting the modding community, we’ll be looking to produce original content based on NBA 2K23. To that end, if you have any suggestions as far as content you’d like to see, please let us know. As always, thank you for joining us here at the NLSC, and here’s hoping that a fun year of basketball gaming awaits us with NBA 2K23!

NBA 2K23 The City Preview

NBA 2K23 The City Preview

The release of NBA 2K23 is imminent, but before it officially launches, the latest developer blog has given us all a preview of The City. Once again, The City will be the hub world for MyCAREER in the Next Gen version of NBA 2K23, whereas Current Gen has the GOAT Boat.

Key improvements this year include reducing the size of The City and adding fast travel options to make it easier to traverse. There are also new designs for the stomping grounds of the four affiliations, a central area for the competitive modes, and an arena for NBA games.

Once again, I’ve summarised the blog below, but be sure to read it for the full scoop and preview screenshots. You can also check out the trailer that was released. Got any thoughts? Feel free to share them in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum! With the game almost in our hands, our post-release coverage will be tipping off very soon. As such, we invite you to stick around for everything we do here, from discussion of the game to our modding community!

NLSC Podcast #442: The Final Countdown to NBA 2K23

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #442 of the NLSC Podcast!

It’s the final countdown to NBA 2K23! Snippets of news are coming through on a daily basis leading up to the release, though the details aren’t always substantial. We’ve got thoughts to share on the MyCAREER trailer, GOAT Boat developer blog, J. Cole cover, guest announcers, and soundtrack reveal (such as it was). We also reflect on an incredible steal of a retro collecting pickup, and respond to a Tweet that perfectly demonstrates Next Gen snobbery. In this week’s mailbag, our listeners tell us about the role players and benchwarmers that became Virtual Hardwood Legends for them, and we share a few more examples of our own unlikely stars throughout many years of basketball gaming.

To get involved with the mailbag or to provide any feedback on the show, hit us up in the comments, reach out on social media, or post here in the NLSC Forum! For more information on the NLSC Podcast including episode guides, check out this page in our Wiki. You can also find the show on our YouTube channel, along with the rest of our video content. GOAT Boat Sets Sail in NBA 2K23 Current Gen

GOAT Boat Sets Sail in NBA 2K23 Current Gen

Following on from the MyCAREER trailer, the latest developer blog provides our first look at The Neighborhood in the Current Gen version of NBA 2K23. Once again, this year’s open world in the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch version of the game will have a nautical setting, as the GOAT Boat replaces the Cancha Del Mar.

The layout of this year’s virtual luxury liner has been revamped, and more courts have been added. There are also no-wait gameplay options, new Seasonal excursions, and an updated quest system with NPCs in The Neighborhood.

As always, I’ve summarised the key information below, but check out the GOAT Boat blog for the full scoop on The Neighborhood in NBA 2K23 Current Gen. What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments below, and join in the discussion here in the NBA 2K23 section of the NLSC Forum!

NBA 2K23 Soundtrack Features 50+ Artists At Launch

NBA 2K23 Soundtrack Reveal

In addition to dropping the MyCAREER trailer and announcing the Dreamer Edition cover featuring J. Cole, 2K has also released details on the NBA 2K23 soundtrack. However, this year’s soundtrack reveal is a little different compared to previous games.

Notably, we don’t actually have a full tracklist as yet! 2K has simply revealed that there will be 50+ artists featured in the game at launch, including Drake, Joey Bad***, Mike Dimes, Snow Tha Product, Lil Baby, Jack Harlow, Megan Thee Stallion, and Jackson Wang, just to name a few. Additionally, three new songs will be added to the NBA 2K23 soundtrack every Friday, expanding it throughout the year.

You can follow and listen to the soundtrack here on Spotify. As of writing, there are no tracks on the playlist, but presumably it will start filling up soon. New tracks will also be added as they appear in NBA 2K23 after launch. Please see below for a list of artists that have been confirmed so far.

What are your thoughts on the artists that have been revealed, and the concept of a consistently updated soundtrack? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NBA 2K23 section of the NLSC Forum!
