The Friday Five: 5 Things You Should Know About Making Roster Updates

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

If you’ve been around the community for a long time, you’re probably aware that I’m not as active as I once was as far as patching is concerned. While the temptation is always there to get creative and put something out for the community, I’m finding myself with less time and motivation to work on any patching projects. As far as the content I’m currently producing is concerned, I’m enjoying co-hosting the NLSC Podcast and writing this column every week; compared to patching, I find it a lot easier to make time for them in between my other NLSC duties (and of course, my real life commitments and responsibilities).

However, the temptation to patch is sometimes difficult to resist, and as you may have seen, I’ve just released a new set of bootup screen updates for NBA Live 2005 through NBA Live 08. I do like the idea of releasing an update or two every now and again, though that of course leads to the question, “Why not make new roster updates every once in a while?” Well, there are a few reasons why I’m not doing that. In the interest of giving everyone an honest answer, I thought that I’d offer an insight into the development of the NBA Live roster updates, and why I’ve had to step away from them. Here are 5 Things You Should Know About Making Roster Updates.

NBA Team Logo Bootup Screens for NBA Live 2005-08

As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t have as much time to patch NBA Live these days, and in all honesty, the dwindling userbase for those older games doesn’t provide as much motivation to do so as it once did. However, I do have a few unreleased updates hanging around in my archives, and I’ve also been working on a few things to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the NBA Live series. As such, you can expect a few new releases every now and again in the coming weeks, along with some other original content.

Today’s releases are new versions of the NBA Team Logo Bootup Screens for NBA Live 2005, NBA Live 06, NBA Live 07, and NBA Live 08. I’m actually releasing two versions of the updates: the current version, v8.0, features 2014/2015 logos. However, you can also select v7.0 from the dropdown menu on the respective downloads pages, if you’d like the 2013/2014 version.

Enjoy the updates, and look out for more 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content coming soon!

The Friday Five: 5 Patches I Always Wanted To Make

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

As I’ve mentioned before, unfortunately I’m not able to commit to any big patching projects these days (particularly any current roster updates); as such, my output has slowed in recent years. While I’d never like to close the door on patching completely, it’s no longer the main content that I’m producing here at the NLSC, and I’m mostly focusing on smaller releases when I do get time to whip something up.

Of course, even while I was still patching more actively, there were ideas that I just didn’t get around to doing due to other commitments, or the project being too difficult or too time consuming to make happen. I thought I’d share some of those ideas in this week’s Friday Five, mostly just for fun and to wonder what could’ve been, but also to put the concepts out there in case anyone else in the community wants to give them a shot. So, without any further ado, let’s take a look at some patching ideas I haven’t been able to do anything with.

Replay Fixes for NBA Live 2005-08

As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t have time to work on any roster updates for NBA Live 2005, 06, 07 and 08, or much else these days. Unfortunately that hasn’t changed – sorry! – but as I mentioned during Episode #88 of the NLSC Podcast, I did whip up some quick workarounds for an issue that’s present in Instant Replay in all of the aforementioned games.

While capturing some screenshots to update the galleries in our subsites, as well as stock up on images for our various feature articles, I was reminded of the annoying issue of the hide/show overlay button remaining on screen in Instant Replay; a small bug, but a pain when you’re trying to get some nice screenshots. I devised a workaround which uses a transparent texture for the hover effect on the button, and figured that I’d share it with the community as others might find a use for it.

Download the fixes here:

Once again, unfortunately I’m unable to work on any roster updates these days, so I respectfully request that you please stop asking me about them; pestering me about them is definitely not going to make me inclined to change my mind! For anyone who would like to use my rosters as a base to make updates of their own, feel free to do so, but I would appreciate credit somewhere if you do. I’d also recommend that NBA Live 08 users check out the NBA Action 15 mod, currently in progress. I have nothing to do with the mod however, so please don’t contact me about it.

The Friday Five: 5 Things That Make Dynasty Mode So Much Fun

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

Seeing as how it’s my favourite game mode, I’ve naturally written a couple of Friday Five articles about Dynasty Mode in the past. I’ve talked about some of the improvements that were made in NBA Live 14, as well as what I want to see added in the future. This week however, I thought I’d talk a little about some of the things that have made the mode so much fun for me over the years.

In a nutshell, the key to making a mode like Dynasty fun and enjoyable is for it to be both deep and immersive. While there is obviously still room for improvement in that regard, I find that a lot of enjoyment actually comes from the basics, not to mention the right approach. Without any further ado, here are five things that I believe greatly contribute to the fun of Dynasty Mode.

Guide to Installing Patches (NBA Live 2005-08)

As I previously mentioned, we’re currently on the lookout for people who are willing and able to help us expand and enhance our library of Wiki articles, as we endeavour to create the definitive resource for basketball video games. Once again, I’d like to encourage anyone with a good knowledge of basketball video games to help us out with that by getting involved, whether it’s adding information on patching, or expanding our articles on game modes and gameplay elements.

To help get the ball rolling, I’ve added a long overdue guide to installing patches in NBA Live 2005, NBA Live 06, NBA Live 07, and NBA Live 08. Those of us who have been patching those games for a long time often take the process for granted, but up until now we haven’t had a comprehensive resource explaining just where to place patched files, or even the basic process of how the sgsm folder works. My hope is that this guide will be a handy reference that we can point to whenever there are questions on how to install patches, be they rosters, courts, jerseys, or whatever.

When I get a moment, I’ll also be adding a guide for NBA Live 2003 and NBA Live 2004, which use the slightly more complex CustomArt method. Until then, I hope you find the guide useful, and look forward to seeing a few more people lending a hand with the Wiki!

The Tuesday Triple: Awesome Old Mixes

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

Just like the wishlists, mix articles go best in groups of 3. So accompanying articles on my favorite MomentousCeltic mixes and my favorite mixes that I made, I am going to list three of my favorite “old” mixes. “Old” is a weird way of classifying these videos because I know Shady00018 has older ones, but I do feel like there is this subjective line about three to four years ago before the big YouTubers got popular. It will work well enough for this article’s purposes at least, so enough writing, let’s watch some mixes.

The Tuesday Triple: Best Arcade Gameplay in Sim Games

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

I have noticed a couple of articles lately that cover the lack of arcade sports titles coming out. Not including the roster updates for the mobile version, NBA Jam: On Fire Edition was the last arcade basketball game to come out, in 2011. With the NBA Street, NBA Ballers, and really any other non-traditional basketball series missing in action for almost 10 years now, fans of this subgenre have had to deal with either playing the same games with outdated rosters or relying on fan updates. Personally, I have gone a different route. Each year I turn the annual simulation release into the arcade game I want it to be, and here are the three I think transform the best into an arcade game.
