Ultimate Jordan Roster – Beta V2 Released

I’ve released a new beta version of my Ultimate Jordan Roster for NBA Live 08, a project that I intend to convert for use with NBA Live 2005, 06 and 07 once it’s done. We’re still a ways off from that, but the latest beta release does add a lot of missing faces and corrects some team art. Release notes of Beta V2 are as follows:

  • Several inaccurate team art updates corrected. A couple of teams are using slightly inaccurate art (ie. a logo or jersey that’s a year or two off the correct season), but for now they’re close approximations, and they’ll be updated as soon as possible.
  • All but three players currently included in the roster have real faces and portraits. Adrian Dantley and Brad Sellers have real portraits and placeholder faces, while Ennis Whatley has a placeholder face and no portrait.
  • Player bio data, ratings, teamgear.dbf assignments, and shoes still need to be fixed.
  • No new players have been added in this release, but all teams still have a playable roster with at least eight players, including all of their regular starters.
  • Active and recently active players included in the roster (ie. players from the 2002 and 2003 teams) have retro faces and portraits. They use different filenames, so as not to interfere with recent season rosters.

A big thanks goes out to BAYAG once again, for sending along some more art updates, and pointing me in the direction of some others!

Ultimate Jordan Roster – Beta Released

You may recall that I released a raw demo of an Ultimate Jordan Roster for NBA Live 08 a few weeks back, providing a preview of a project that I’m working on as part of our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content. Well, I’ve made some progress on the roster, and am pleased to announce that I’ve now released an updated beta version!

The latest release includes at least eight players on all 30 teams, with most teams now using accurate retro art. A few teams are currently using retro art that’s not quite accurate for the time period they represent, but ideally, that will be fixed by the first stable release. A few players are still missing faces and portraits, and a lot of ratings and bio data need to be updated, but that will be done once a few more things are in place. The rosters are also being designed for maximum compatibility with current updates, so you don’t need to worry about things getting overwritten.

Download the beta version of the Ultimate Jordan Roster here! For more information and previews, please see this thread. If anyone is able to lend a hand with any art updates, please let me know. I’ll also be looking to make conversions for NBA Live 2005 to 07 once I reach a stable release, so stay tuned for further updates and preview releases!

The Friday Five: 5 More Basketball Video Game Easter Eggs

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

It’s been a couple of years since I compiled a list of some of the cool things that we’ve found while playing basketball video games, as well as poking around in their files. Seeing as though Easter is upon us once again, I thought it’d only be appropriate to take a look at five more Easter Eggs that we’ve discovered over the years.

Secrets and Easter Eggs definitely add fun to video games, rewarding us for exploring every nook and cranny of the game world, going off the beaten track and trying something outlandish, or on a more meta level, hunting through the game’s data files. Sports games aren’t necessarily jam packed with them – or at least, their Easter Eggs aren’t usually as wild, wacky, or creative as other game genres – but there’s usually something interesting to find, be it dummied out content, leftover files, or something completely unexpected. Let’s take a look at another five basketball video game Easter Eggs that you may or may not be aware of.

Ultimate Jordan Roster Raw Demo for NBA Live 08

As I prepare content for our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live celebrations, I’m looking at creating a few different projects for the PC versions of NBA Live that I’ve long wanted to do, but never gotten around to doing. For the larger releases, I’m looking at releasing “demo” versions, which can be updated gradually as I have time to work on them and acquire the necessary art assets.

My latest project is an Ultimate Jordan Roster (name subject to change) for NBA Live 08, which I’d also be looking to convert for use with NBA Live 2005, NBA Live 06, and NBA Live 07. It contains historical teams celebrating Michael Jordan’s career (1984-2003): 15 of MJ’s teams and 15 selected opponents, one for each season he played in the NBA.

As with the Fictional Basketball League, this is something that I’ll be working on whenever I’m able to, so I’m not setting any release date. If a few people from the community would like to get involved, contributions of historical team/player art and the like would be very much appreciated!

In the meantime, you can download the very bare-bones raw demo here. If you have any comments, feel free to leave them below, or post them in my release thread.

Fictional Basketball League Mod Demo for NBA Live 08

A little while ago in an edition of The Friday Five, I talked about some projects that I always wanted to do, but never got around to doing. In the interest of doing some cool stuff for our upcoming 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content, I’m starting out by giving one of them a try.

I’ve released a demo of a Fictional Basketball League mod, which would replace the entire NBA with completely fictional players…as well as a few characters from films and television shows that are related to basketball. This two team demo replaces the rosters for the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks with characters from movies and TV, including a few that were portrayed by NBA players.

In the full version, these players would be more evenly distributed, and outnumbered by completely made up players. Depending on whether anyone else is interested in getting involved in the project, the NBA teams themselves might also be replaced with fictional equivalents. I’d also be looking to convert the mod for use with NBA Live 2005, NBA Live 06, and NBA Live 07.

Download the FBL demo here, and post any feedback or suggestions in the comments below, as well as in my release thread in the NBA Live 08 section of the Forum. Please see the included readme file for more information.
