Wayback Wednesday: LeBron James’ Free Agency in NBA Live 10

LeBron James in NBA Live 10

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content.

Since I’m still working on a few retrospectives for Wayback Wednesday (as well as our ongoing 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content), I’ve been looking through the archives for something fun and interesting to share with you this week. Combing through an old folder of images, I came across a collection of screenshots of LeBron James in NBA Live 10. I took them in May 2010 for an article that was looking ahead to his upcoming free agency, and speculating upon which jersey he might be wearing come the 2011 season. Since LeBron announced his number change prior to his free agency, he’s wearing number six in all of them.

As it happened, both LeBron James’ career and the fortunes of the NBA Live series took an infamous turn just a few months later. Let’s take a look back…way back…

The Friday Five: 5 Worst AI Problems in Basketball Video Games

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA, or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

We’ve tipped off our Wishlists for both basketball games, and as I do every year, I’ve been making sure to put out a few reminders about the best way to provide feedback. The most common mistake when posting suggestions for NBA Live or NBA 2K is failing to provide relevant details: saying things like “deeper modes”, “better gameplay”, or “improved AI”. While these are certainly things that we do want to see, they don’t describe what we specifically want to see improve, or the problems that need to be addressed. It’s like going to a restaurant and ordering “tasty food”; there isn’t nearly enough information to work from.

Basketball has a lot finicky nuances that we want to see realistically portrayed in NBA Live and NBA 2K, and when our expectations aren’t being met, we need to be able to identify all those annoying quirks in the AI. Those moments of frustration we have when we’re playing a game, because the CPU is doing something that’s not quite right? Those are the issues that we need to bring up. To demonstrate what I’m talking about, here are five of what I feel are the worst problems with AI in basketball video games, along with some relevant examples.

Generated Players: The Ultimate Blank Canvas

When I was playing NBA Live 10, I saw a lot of generated players. In fact, by the time it was season 18, Dwight Howard was the only real life player left in the league. Even though it’s not as aesthetically pleasing to see a league full of computer-generated characters with porn moustaches, it can provide an excellent opportunity to exercise your creative flair and go far beyond what you think is possible as a sim gamer.

If you’re anything like me, you love chasing achievements like triple-doubles, five-by-fives, and 50-point games. Sometimes these achievements can be the only thing keeping your Dynasty or Association mode interesting if you’re constantly winning championships. But there’s always one problem with real life players – they’re often limited by our own expectations. After all, you have to be pretty liberal with your sim gaming if you can justify someone like J.R. Smith winning the MVP trophy, or someone like Kwame Brown becoming a productive player.

With generated players, there’s no overachieving or underachieving, because they don’t exist outside of the video game. They’re a blank canvas for your imagination and the ultimate vehicle for your achievement hunting. No other player in my basketball video game experiences has embodied this more than a generated player named Borislav Perko in my NBA Live 10 Nuggets Dynasty.

The Tuesday Triple: Popular Modes I Barely Played

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

Blacktop mode this, Blacktop mode that. I talk a lot about my favorite mode and rarely talk about the many other modes that NBA 2K and NBA Live games feature. For the most part, if I don’t know enough about a topic, I will shy away from discussing it. In the same way you will probably never see me get into cyberface or shoe patching, I try to stay away from the many discussions about simulation gameplay, accessory accuracy, or the other parts of these games that I don’t feel confident enough giving my opinion on. So, for today’s Tuesday Triple, I am going to take a look at some popular game modes that I have either skipped completely, or only played once or twice.

Dumb Fact Monday: Mystery Warriors Uniform

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

The uniform selections in our yearly basketball video game releases usually stick with uniforms seen that year in the real NBA. NBA 2K games generally have more retro uniforms from years past, but NBA Live has included some odd uniform choices in its past such as the Original Celtics uniform in older NBA Live games. While NBA Live 14 seems to keep its uniform selection as limited as the offerings seen this season in the NBA, NBA Live 09 and NBA Live 10 included a strange fictional Golden State Warriors uniform that was never worn in the real life NBA.

Dumb Fact Monday: Extra Year of Roster Updates

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

I think we can all agree that the biggest downfall of not only basketball video games, but all sport video games, is that they become obsolete after only one year of relevance. Usually the game’s users will get one final roster update after the NBA Finals are finished to remove any injuries in the roster, but if you want to play with the newest rookies a community created roster is normally your only choice. However, there were two simulation basketball video games that did receive official roster updates one full year after their release year.
