NLSC Podcast – Episode #90 (Sean O’Brien Interview)

NLSC Podcast Logo

We’re pleased to present a special episode of the NLSC Podcast this week, as JaoSming and I had the opportunity to chat with NBA Live 15 Executive Producer, Sean O’Brien. Sean very kindly gave us a little over two hours of his time, in which he spoke very honestly about the return of the series with NBA Live 14, the team’s goals with future releases, and of course, some of the things that we can expect in NBA Live 15.

On that note, Sean gave us a lot of great info on this year’s game, including details on controls and responsiveness, physics, locomotion and animation quality, AI improvements, and enhancements to the shooting mechanics. Sean also clarified a few points about the future of game modes such as Dynasty and Rising Star, while also answering our questions about this year’s practice facilities, content updates, and even the possibility of NBA Live 14 getting further roster updates before NBA Live 15 comes out.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, so don’t delay any longer: click Play to listen to the show!

A huge thanks to Sean once again for coming on the Podcast! As always, we welcome your thoughts on this week’s show, either in the comments below, or here in the Forum. We also invite you to join in the discussion taking place in the NBA Live 15 section of the Forum.

The Friday Five: 5 Things That Make Dynasty Mode So Much Fun

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

Seeing as how it’s my favourite game mode, I’ve naturally written a couple of Friday Five articles about Dynasty Mode in the past. I’ve talked about some of the improvements that were made in NBA Live 14, as well as what I want to see added in the future. This week however, I thought I’d talk a little about some of the things that have made the mode so much fun for me over the years.

In a nutshell, the key to making a mode like Dynasty fun and enjoyable is for it to be both deep and immersive. While there is obviously still room for improvement in that regard, I find that a lot of enjoyment actually comes from the basics, not to mention the right approach. Without any further ado, here are five things that I believe greatly contribute to the fun of Dynasty Mode.

Interview with Sean O’Brien: NBA Live 14 Updates

FanSided has posted part four of their interview with NBA Live Executive Producer Sean O’Brien, which you can check out here. The latest installment looks back at last year’s game, as Sean talks about why it was important to push through so many content updates for NBA Live 14. In short, the team was not satisfied with the lacklustre reviews, and did not want to wait until NBA Live 15 to address some of the fans’ biggest concerns.

Sean also describes games as experiences, and expresses a belief that they can evolve through the course of the year. This would certainly appear to be promising news for this year’s game; no matter the quality of NBA Live 15 on launch day, it seems likely that we’ll be receiving significant updates and new content throughout the year, as we did with NBA Live 14.

Be sure to check out the interview in its entirety, and sound off with your thoughts in the comments below, as well as join in the discussion here in the NBA Live 15 section of the NLSC Forum.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #85

NLSC Podcast Logo

Join Arcane, JaoSming and myself for another installment of the NLSC Podcast! In Episode #85, we discuss the lack of NBA Live 15 and NBA 2K15 news, some false information that’s making the rounds, and the beginning of the 2014 NBA free agent frenzy.

  • No NBA Live 15 or NBA 2K15 news this week, but we reflect on the letdown that was last week’s NBA 2K15 hashtag campaign.
  • For all the retro gamers in the audience, a new update has been released for NBA Live 96 on Genesis. We’re impressed with the amount of work that’s gone into it.
  • JaoSming outlines his plans for a new series on his YouTube channel this Summer, featuring NBA 2K14 PC. He promises not to mislabel it for additional views.
  • Do we anticipate playing much of NBA Live 14 and NBA 2K14 during the offseason?
  • Speaking of NBA Live 14, the winners of our giveaway have been selected.
  • In light of recent comments by Peter Moore, we revisit the dreaded business models of “free to play” and “free to wait”.
  • We give our reactions to the 2014 NBA Draft. Not surprisingly, one of us had a prediction that was way off.
  • The Chicago Bulls have made a strong pitch to Carmelo Anthony, but will he end up in the Windy City? We ponder that question, and discuss some deals that have already been agreed to.
  • While discussing Jason Kidd’s jump from the Brooklyn Nets to the Milwaukee Bucks, a new euphemism is coined.
  • We wrap up the episode with an entertaining Tweet from Muggsy Bogues.

The Tuesday Triple: Why Next Gen Sucks Now

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

We are about seven months into the latest generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles. This also means that we have experienced about seven months of next-generation NBA basketball games with NBA 2K14 and NBA Live 14. Both games have had a pretty interesting year, from fantasy team modes that make you want to open your wallet again, to online issues and unmet potentials from both games. Still, I would say that both games started the latest generation of basketball videogames on a mostly positive note, it’s just too bad that both games suck now. Hit Read More to find out why.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #84

NLSC Podcast Logo

Join Arcane, JaoSming and myself for Episode #84 of the NLSC Podcast, in which we discuss the latest NBA Live 15 news, a rumour that’s making the rounds, RED MC news, the 2014 NBA Draft, and a few other topics we felt like chatting about this week.

  • We open this week’s episode with the latest details on RED MC. The .iff editing functionality has some teething problems, but awesome stuff is on the way.
  • Before we started recording, some new screenshots of NBA Live 15 were released, once again spotlighting the graphical improvements in this year’s game.
  • We’ll be hearing more about NBA Live 15’s gameplay come August, but in the meantime, we talk about a rumour that began circulating earlier in the day.
  • Arcane finally has the full version of NBA Live 14! As such, he provides some initial impressions of the complete game.
  • A reminder that if you want to get your hands on a free copy of NBA Live 14, be sure to enter our giveaway before July 1st!
  • Some NBA 2K15 news will be coming this Friday. We certainly hope that it will be substantial, and not an announcement of an announcement, nor more NBA 2K14 footage.
  • Will we ever see college basketball and football games from EA again? EA is definitely interested in developing them, should all legal barriers be cleared.
  • We give our thoughts on the Charlotte Hornets’ new uniforms. Hooray for no sleeved alternates!
  • LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony have opted out of their contracts, while Tim Duncan will return for one more year. We react and speculate.
  • Trade talks that would have sent Kevin Love to Golden State have fallen apart. Where do we currently think that he, and other big names, will ultimately end up?
  • We make some final predictions before the 2014 NBA Draft, and JaoSming provides a fun piece of trivia to close the show on.

New NBA Live 14 Ultimate Team Packs, Answers to #AskObes Coming

New packs are available in NBA Live 14 Ultimate Team this weekend, featuring one Legend, one Spotlight of the Week, and one Playoff Performer card. Speaking of Playoff Performer cards, the San Antonio Spurs’ Boris Diaw is one of the latest players to be featured, after helping the Spurs take a 3-1 lead over the Miami Heat in the 2014 NBA Finals.

Turning our attention to NBA Live 15, EA has finished collecting questions for the #AskObes Twitter Q&A with Executive Producer Sean O’Brien, and will be posting the answers shortly over on the official NBA Live website. Should any interesting tidbits come out of the Q&A, which will be focused on the first screenshot and behind the scenes video, we’ll be sure to cover them. As indicated in Sean’s open letter to the community, more details on gameplay will be coming our way in July.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #82

NLSC Podcast Logo

It’s been an eventful week with the 2014 NBA Finals tipping off, the preview seasons for NBA Live 15 and NBA 2K15 getting underway, and of course, E3 2014. Join Arcane, JaoSming and myself as we chat about all the recent news and events in Episode #82 of the NLSC Podcast!

  • We react to the NBA Live 15 Open Letter from Executive Producer Sean O’Brien, as well as the “Most Valuable Players” TV spot for NBA 2K15.
  • The first screenshot of NBA Live 15 was released earlier this week, and it shows a huge improvement over NBA Live 14. We give our impressions, and talk about some of the community’s reactions.
  • Since JaoSming is back on the show this week, we have another status report on IFF editing in RED MC.
  • We give our thoughts on the NBA Finals so far. We’re all sticking with our original predictions.
  • As tiresome as the story has become, we once again weigh in on the latest controversy surrounding Donald Sterling and the sale of the Los Angeles Clippers.
  • Derek Fisher, Mark Price, Kevin Love, Patty Mills, and a couple of topics from the NBA Reddit round out this week’s NBA discussion.
  • E3 didn’t give us any juicy information about this year’s NBA titles, but there are a few other games that we’re interested in. We wrap up the show with a few thoughts on some noteworthy stories coming out of this year’s event.

The Tuesday Triple: Vita Remote Play

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

About a month ago I found an auction on eBay I couldn’t pass up. I finally got a PlayStation Vita, the current portable console from Sony, for a little more than $90. It was a great deal and I got very lucky with how great the condition is for something I got for so cheap, used. Since NBA 2K13 was the last basketball game to come out for the old PSP, I wasn’t getting this for playing virtual basketball on the go. I wanted it for Remote Play with my PlayStation 4. For those unaware, you can stream from the PlayStation 4 to the Vita and play without a controller or a TV. So now that I have had plenty of time to play NBA 2K14 and NBA Live 14 with it, I figured I would give some of my impressions of Remote Play basketball.

Quick Comparison Between NBA Live 14 and 15

After seeing the quality of player faces in today’s screenshot of NBA Live 15, I wanted to make a quick comparison between it and NBA Live 14. Needless to say, it is like night and day. I did have some issues with player emotions in my comparison screenshots, but you get the idea. We are going from something that was pretty terrible quality (especially for a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game) to headscans. Let’s just hope the improvement carries over to gameplay and animations as well, as promised in that Open Letter last week.

To check out the comparisons hit Read More. I have the comparison image and a gif that automatically flashes between the two images as well.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #81

NLSC Podcast Logo

With the NBA Finals upon us and E3 right around the corner, we’ve certainly got a few things to talk about in Episode #81 of the NLSC Podcast. Join Arcane and I as we speculate on NBA Live 15 and NBA 2K15, cover a couple of other news items from the past week, and make our predictions for the rematch between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat.

  • We open with a couple of housekeeping notes regarding future episodes of the Podcast, the Wiki, and a celebration of the 20th Anniversary of NBA Live.
  • A few more issues have arisen with the NBA Live 14 rosters, but a new update will apparently be coming through at some point. We’ve also been told that these issues should be ironed out for NBA Live 15.
  • Neither NBA Live 15 or NBA 2K15 have been officially announced for E3, but we expect there’ll be some news coming out of the event. We speculate on what we might see.
  • We’ll be getting a look at NBA 2K15 during Game 1 of the NBA Finals. “OMG Trailer” Part Two, perhaps?
  • We’re holding our last NBA 2K14 Steam key giveaway. Get your entries in before next Wednesday!
  • Moving on to this week’s NBA discussion, we recap and react to the end of the Conference Finals. What’s next for the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers?
  • Because we’re so good at predictions, we make our picks for the rematch between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs.
  • The Los Angeles Clippers could soon be sold for $2 billion, but Donald Sterling is looking to sue the NBA. We take another look at the controversy and the “freedom of speech” arguments that are being made.
  • On that note, we discuss some comments by Mark Jackson that have recently come to light, which may have ultimately cost him his coaching job with the Golden State Warriors.
  • Looking ahead to the offseason for a moment, we consider some of the big moves that might happen. Yes, we make some more predictions!
  • We wrap up the show with some talk about a few other games that we’re interested in at the moment.

Further Update on NBA Live 14 Rosters

NBA Live Developer Fernando has posted an update on the status of the rosters for NBA Live 14 here in the Forum. It appears as though further issues have arisen, which have prevented the previously mentioned update from being pushed through. Although there is currently no timetable for a new roster update, the team is apparently working on those issues and are hoping to get a new update pushed through as soon as they possibly can.

In the meantime, NBA Live 14 has still been receiving other content updates, including new BIG Moments and LIVE Season games, as well as new packs and player cards in Ultimate Team. According to Fernando, the update system will be configured differently for NBA Live 15, so they don’t anticipate having similar issues with the game when it is released later this year.

Dumb Mondays: Free to Wait in NBA Games?

This is Dumb Mondays, starting the workweek off with silly facts or some of my opinions and predictions that you may or may not find interesting. This week I am sharing a dumb opinion and will be looking for and responding to your comments throughout the week.

If you haven’t heard of Jim Sterling’s webshow the Jimquisition, I would highly recommend checking it out for his comments on the video game industry. A few months ago he covered the topic of what he dubbed ‘Free to Wait‘ games. These are the games we see a lot of on mobile platforms, where gameplay is halted due to a timer that you can pay real or virtual currencies to speed up. These mechanics have been legitimized simply because the base game is free, but what if this terrible thing started showing up in our annual NBA games?
