20th Anniversary of NBA Live: Sean O’Brien’s Reflections

Magic vs. Pistons in NBA Live 97

We’re picking up our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live celebrations once again with a clip from Episode #129 of the NLSC Podcast, in which I chatted to Sean O’Brien, Executive Producer of NBA Live. While the interview was mainly centred on NBA Live 16 – at the time, a couple of weeks away from its release – we also took some time out to talk about the history of the series, and Sean’s experience working on it, beginning with NBA Live 97. As noted in our chat, he was even featured as a cheat code in that game!

With such a long history working on the series, Sean definitely has some interesting stories to tell about how he got involved with the development of the game, and how things have changed over the years. He recalls his experiences providing motion capture back in 1996, and describes what it was like to develop a basketball game back in the 90s. In reminiscing about his experiences working on NBA Live, Sean also touches on the future of the series, mentioning that he’s excited about what he believes the team can do with the next couple of releases.

Catch it here on our YouTube channel if you’re having any issues with the embedded video. If you’d like to listen to the entire interview, you can tune in to Episode #129 of the NLSC Podcast here.

Stay tuned for more 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #135

NLSC Podcast Logo

We’re a little late this week, but Arcane and I weren’t about to let our digital broadcasting streak end so easily. As such, Episode #135 of the NLSC Podcast is out now; tune in for the latest discussion on NBA Live 16, NBA 2K16, the past week in the NBA, and a couple of other topics!

On this week’s show…

  • A new roster has come through for NBA Live 16, but the latest update still leaves something to be desired.
  • On the other hand, a huge patch has come through for NBA 2K16 on PS4. The PC and X1 patches are still on the way.
  • Speaking of the Xbox One, NBA Jam: On Fire Edition is on the newly announced list of backwards compatible games. We discuss the possibility of the game coming to PlayStation 4 as well.
  • If nothing else, forthcoming backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 2 might allow us to play NBA Street 1-3 on Sony’s latest console.
  • We’ve got a listener question this week: Would we consider buying a Steam machine?
  • Stephen Curry has passed his father in career threes, as he and the Golden State Warriors continue to have a fantastic start to the season. We discuss their success so far, and consider the comparisons to great teams and players from the past.
  • The Philadelphia 76ers, on the other hand, continue to lose. When will the tanking end?
  • Kevin McHale has been fired following the Houston Rockets’ slow start. We consider whether the move was fair, or made too early.
  • Speaking of coaches in the hot seat, George Karl is butting heads with DeMarcus Cousins and GM Vlade Divac. Do we think he’ll last the season?
  • We wrap up Episode #135 of the NLSC Podcast with some more interesting stats.

November 19th Roster Update for NBA Live 16

November 19th Roster for NBA Live 16

A new roster update has come through for NBA Live 16, with team rosters that appear to have been updated as of this week. While a handful of players have been added to game, there are still over 30 missing players in the most recent roster, including some players who are currently in their team’s regular rotation. At a glance, there’s also one incorrect jersey number: Ian Clark of the Golden State Warriors.

A couple of recent signings have been accounted for however, along with last week’s trade which sent Mario Chalmers and James Ennis to the Memphis Grizzlies, and Beno Udrih and Jarnell Stokes to the Miami Heat. You can check out a list of corrections below, as well as here in the NBA Live 16 section of the Forum.

If you have feedback on the rosters that you’d like to send along to the developers, feel free to add it in this thread in the NBA Live 16 section!

Monday Tip-Off: The Gaming Rotation

Michael Jordan Menu in NBA 2K16

We’re at midcourt, the ball is about to go up…it’s Monday Tip-Off! Get your week started here at the NLSC with a feature that’s dedicated to opinions, commentary, and other fun stuff related to basketball video games.

As a gamer, I tend to stick with the genres and video game series that I’m interested in, and familiar with. I don’t buy a lot of brand new releases every year, so my gaming rotation is usually comprised of the latest version of NBA Live and NBA 2K, the latest WWE game, a favourite that may be at least a few years old, and the occasional big release if it’s one that I’m interested in (such as Grand Theft Auto V, a couple of years back). If I happen to pick up something cheap in a Steam/Green Man Gaming/GOG sale, it’ll probably work its way into the rotation at some point, too.

To that end, 2015 has actually been a bigger year than normal for me, in terms of gaming purchases. In addition to NBA Live 16, NBA 2K16, and WWE 2K16 – the series I pick up annually – there’s also been Mortal Kombat X and Fallout 4. On top of that, I picked up the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V, to give me something else to play on my new gaming rig. While MK X came out earlier this year, everything else was released (or in the case of GTA V PC, picked up) around the same time. The result is a handful of AAA games that you can potentially spend a lot of time with, all vying for time in my gaming rotation.

First world problems, right? I’m not complaining about it though, just stating a fact: I’m spoiled for choice at the moment. I’m obviously going to be spending time with the basketball games, given that I’m running a website dedicated to basketball gaming and am passionate about them, but beyond that, how do I fit everything in alongside producing content for the NLSC, working a day job, and socialising? Well, I do have a system…sort of…

NLSC Podcast – Episode #134

NLSC Podcast Logo

Tune in to Episode #134 of the NLSC Podcast, hosted by Arcane and myself! This week we’re talking updates for NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16, some historically remarkable numbers for Andre Drummond, and a couple of other news items from the past week.

On this week’s show…

  • NBA Live 16 is in need of a major patch and content update. When do we think we might see it?
  • We look ahead to NBA Live 17 once again, and speculate on whether major updates for 16 might be shelved in favour of ensuring a much better game next year.
  • The third patch for NBA 2K16 should be coming soon. Mike Wang has posted some tidbits on what to expect over at Operation Sports.
  • Some gamers have discovered a couple of defensive settings (and possible oversight) in NBA 2K16 that make a huge difference to the way the CPU plays defense.
  • Moving on to the NBA discussion, Andre Drummond is doing something that hasn’t been done in almost 50 years. We know that Leftos has to be pleased.
  • LeBron James supports our campaign to put an end to sleeved jerseys! OK, not really, but it’s clear The King doesn’t care for them either.
  • Derrick Rose is slowly regaining his form, which one of us is particularly pleased to see. We discuss the recent rumours surrounding Rose, and whether he’s actually on the way out of Chicago.
  • The Miami Heat have made the first trade of the regular season, sending Mario Chalmers to the Memphis Grizzlies.
  • We end Episode #134 of the NLSC Podcast with a dubious statistic involving Nick Young and Kobe Bryant.

NBA Live 16 Week 2 Roster Update

NBA Live 16: Kevin Durant

The Week 2 roster update for NBA Live 16 is now available, and will download automatically upon firing up the game. The latest roster features updated team lineups, though at a glance, there are still players missing throughout the league, and there are no new faces as yet. It doesn’t appear that any ratings have been updated either, although a few new accessories have been assigned. A full list of the changes in the latest roster has been posted here over on the official NBA Live 16 website.

Notably, five new jerseys have also been added to NBA Live 16 in the latest roster update:

  • San Antonio Spurs Stretch
  • Houston Rockets Home Alternate
  • Phoenix Suns Road Alternate
  • Golden State Warrior Championship
  • Miami Heat Home Alternate

As always, if you have any feedback on the roster updates for NBA Live 16, be sure to post it in this thread in the Forum. You can check out a screenshot of the newly added jerseys for the Spurs, Rockets, Suns, Warriors, and Heat below.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #133

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #133 of the NLSC Podcast is out now, so tune in for your weekly fix of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and NBA discussion here at the NLSC! Arcane and I are your hosts as we discuss the latest NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16 news, and the first week of the 2016 NBA season.

On this week’s show…

  • New rosters are out for NBA Live 16, but we’re still waiting for proper, post-opening night 2016 season lineups.
  • We touch on last week’s discussion about NBA Live 16’s sales and what NBA Live 17 needs to do, and follow up with a correction.
  • Patch V2 is out now for NBA 2K16 PC. Some issues remain, but there’s a noticeable improvement in performance, and some welcome fixes.
  • NBA 2K16 modding saw a huge development this week with the release of the External File Plugin. Installing mods just got a whole lot easier.
  • 2K is banning PC gamers who hack their NBA 2K16 MyCAREER saves with the Cheat Engine. Fair or foul?
  • We wrap up this week’s video game discussion with some further MyCAREER talk.
  • Moving on to our NBA discussion, we recap the first week of the 2016 season, which has seen the Golden State Warriors dominate, Nate Robinson get cut after two games, and Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook achieve a milestone.
  • In a tale of two all-time greats, we reflect on Kobe Bryant’s continued struggles and decline, and LeBron James’ continued ascension up the all-time scoring charts.
  • It wouldn’t be an episode of the NLSC Podcast without some jersey discussion. This time, it’s the presence of the Kia logo on the All-Star jerseys.
  • We talk a little about how our favourite teams are doing, and the early struggles of the Houston Rockets.
  • Episode #133 of the NLSC Podcast ends with some Kevin Garnett trivia that probably makes him feel old. Kinda makes us feel old, too.

The Friday Five: 5 Things NBA Live 17 Absolutely Has To Do

The Friday Five

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA, or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

Normally, this is the type of article that I would write after the most recent release has been out a little longer, but with NBA Live 16 selling a disappointing amount of copies, and NBA Live 17 really having to move the needle and make an impact, I figured I’d start early on some constructive feedback. While I do feel that NBA Live 16 is an improvement over NBA Live 15 and has some good elements and concepts, there is much that needs to be done with NBA Live 17, especially in terms of making it a deep and fully featured NBA sim.

Now, this is all stuff that I’ll be discussing in further detail in future editions of The Friday Five, as well as other articles and of course, the NLSC Podcast. This isn’t intended to be a comprehensive Wishlist article, covering every point in-depth, and listing absolutely every improvement that needs to be made in NBA Live 17. Rather, it’s meant to highlight some of the key improvements and additions that I believe need to be made next year. With that said, let’s take a look at the five things that in my opinion, NBA Live 17 absolutely has to do.

Opening Night Roster Update for NBA Live 16

Opening Day Roster Update for NBA Live 16

We noted in Episode #132 of the NLSC Podcast that NBA Live 16 had not yet received a roster update for the opening night of the 2016 NBA season. Fortunately, that has now changed, as opening night rosters have been added to NBA Live 16. As with all content updates, they will be pushed through automatically upon firing up the game, as long as you’re connected to the Internet (and the servers aren’t down for maintenance).

Having combed through the rosters, I can confirm that while there are several updates and additions, 38 players are currently missing (though several of them are inactive, or benchwarmers), there are 22 recent cuts that have not been accounted for, and a total of 18 incorrect jersey numbers. I’ve compiled a list of them which you can check out below; I’ll also be forwarding that feedback on to the NBA Live 16 development team.

Speaking of roster feedback, if you have any corrections or ratings suggestions, feel free to post them in this thread in the NBA Live 16 section of the Forum. Once again, we’ll be passing along that information to the developers.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #132

NLSC Podcast Logo

It’s that time of the week again, as Arcane and I are coming at you with Episode #132 of the NLSC Podcast! We’ve got a lot to talk about this week including NBA Live 16 sales and the future of the NBA Live series, some exciting news for the NBA 2K16 modding community, opening night of the 2016 NBA season, and more.

On this week’s show…

  • NBA Live 16’s sales figures have been underwhelming. We discuss the reaction to the game so far, and the low number of sales following the optimism of the preview season.
  • What must EA Sports do with NBA Live 17 for the game to show sufficient improvement, and move the needle in sales?
  • We talk about a couple of things that were left on the cutting room floor for NBA Live 16. We also note the lack of an opening night roster update, and the presence of one for NBA 2K16.
  • There’s been another exciting development with NBA 2K16 modding, which we’re looking forward to seeing come to fruition. Hopefully, modding is even easier in NBA 2K17.
  • We pay our respects to the late Flip Saunders, who sadly lost his battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
  • The 2016 NBA season is underway, and it’s about time, too. We give our thoughts on the action from opening night.
  • Tristan Thompson has finally signed an extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Did they overpay for him?
  • We wrap up Episode #132 of the NLSC Podcast with a discussion of Nike’s fancy new shoe. It’s no hoverboard, but it’s still sufficiently futuristic for 2015!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #131

NLSC Podcast Logo

Well, would you look at that…we managed to record a new episode of the NLSC Podcast two weeks in a row! Episode #131 of the NLSC Podcast is out now, hosted by Arcane and myself; join us as we give our latest impressions of NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16, discuss a little retro basketball gaming, and react to the 2016 NBA GM survey.

On this week’s show…

  • We’ve had another week to play NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16, with a couple of patches being pushed through. What’s our latest take on this year’s games?
  • Since we didn’t cover it last week, we also give our thoughts on the MyNBA2K16 app. If you need extra VC, it’s definitely worth picking up.
  • We talk about a recent retro basketball game purchase, and reminisce once again about the days when multiple companies released yearly hoops titles. Will we ever see that happen again?
  • Following up on one of last week’s big NBA stories, Lamar Odom is thankfully on the mend.
  • The 2016 NBA GM Survey is out on NBA.com. Are we the only ones who make terrible predictions?
  • We wrap up Episode #131 of the NLSC Podcast with a gem from NBA 2K16 that surely can’t be a coincidence.

Patch Notes for NBA Live 16 Title Update v1.03

NBA Live 16: Kawhi Leonard & James Harden

Last week, a new title update (v1.03) was pushed through for NBA Live 16. At the time, no patch notes were released and the update history on PlayStation 4 only specified “minor bug fixes”, however I was able to confirm that the patch addresses some stability and framerate issues.

For those who’d like some more specific details, EA Sports has now posted a few notes about the latest NBA Live 16 title update over on the official website. They are as follows:

GENERAL ISSUES

  • Addressed an issue in which users we not receiving Content Updates after being disconnected from the EA Servers, causing them to desync with users in Online game modes.
  • Improved game stability

PRO-AM

  • Addressed the delay in Summer Circuit that was seen when users were in single player game sessions. Users should now see a significant reduction in delay within single player Summer Circuit games.

RISING STAR

  • Addressed the issues with missing graphics and UI when jumping into a Rising Star simulated game.

If you have any feedback on the latest NBA Live 16 title update, be sure to post it here in the Forum. Any bugs and glitches you encounter in NBA Live 16 are welcome in this thread; we also have threads for roster feedback, and general gameplay and game mode feedback and suggestions. We’re passing along our impressions and feedback to the NBA Live development team, so if you’re playing NBA Live 16 and have constructive feedback to share, be sure to join in the discussion!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #130

NLSC Podcast Logo

After a longer than expected hiatus, we’re back with Episode #130 of the NLSC Podcast! Illness and scheduling conflicts have once again gotten in the way as of late, but we’re back on the air, and looking forward to getting back into the habit of recording weekly shows, especially with the release of NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16.

On this week’s show…

  • We tip things off with our impressions of NBA Live 16. Is it the step up over NBA Live 15 that we were hoping it would be?
  • A couple of patches have already been released for NBA Live 16, so we have some impressions to share regarding a couple of the fixes.
  • NBA 2K16 has already sold four million copies, of which we own a couple. What do we make of this year’s offering from Visual Concepts?
  • We’ve been fairly critical of the story-driven approach to MyCAREER these past few years, but in NBA 2K16, it’s not all bad. Then again, it’s not all good, either…
  • Catching up on some community news, our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content will be resuming soon, alongside our continued NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K16 coverage. NBA 2K16 PC modding has also tipped off with the release of gregkwaste’s NBA 2K16 Explorer.
  • Moving on to this week’s NBA discussion, we react to the terrible situation with Lamar Odom.
  • On a happier note, we look ahead to the 2016 season, and pick our shortlist of title contenders.
  • We wrap up Episode #130 of the NLSC Podcast with more NBA fashion critiques, and the impending anniversary of a league record.

NBA Live 16 Update v1.03 Released

A new update (v1.03) has been pushed through for NBA Live 16, at least for the PlayStation 4 version of the game; if you’re on Xbox One and have received the patch, please let me know. Unfortunately, there are no detailed patch notes at this time, and the update history for NBA Live 16 only describes the latest patch as containing “minor bug fixes”, same as the 1.0.1 and 1.02 title updates.

I’ve reached out to EA Sports, and I’ve been informed that the latest patch isn’t a big gameplay or features update, but instead fixes some crashes. It’s also intended to address the framerate issues that some users were experiencing in Summer Circuit. Having played a single player Summer Circuit game earlier today, the fix certainly seems to have worked.

Hopefully at some point, more detailed patch notes will be released for the latest title update, and any future title updates for NBA Live 16. I made sure to pass that feedback along to my contacts at EA Sports, so hopefully there’s at least a chance that we’ll get more informative patch notes in the future. If any more information about the latest patch for NBA Live 16 is released, we’ll be sure to post it.

In the meantime, feel free to post about your experiences with the latest patch in the comments section below, as well as this thread in the NBA Live 16 section of the NLSC Forum. If you’d like to post any bug reports, please use this thread. Got some general feedback, including suggestions related to gameplay, game modes, or features? Feel free to make use of this thread! We’ll be sure to pass all constructive feedback along to the NBA Live 16 development team, and of course, we’ll be compiling our NBA Live 17 Wishlist in the not too distant future.
