NLSC Podcast #386: Don’t Forget to Pump Fake

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #386 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

We’ve been sinking our teeth into Road Trip in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, as the co-op experience has proven to be a blast. The more we’ve played, the more we’ve been able to develop chemistry and hone our strategies. Speaking of which, we discuss moves and techniques that are all too easily overlooked, and some of the most unstoppable moves and players in basketball video games. We also react to the latest vague update on NBA Live, and the prospect of a F2P model for sim basketball games. Additionally, reflecting on our forthcoming 25th Anniversary leads to a story about the community circa 2004.

NLSC Podcast #385: Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One

Episode #385 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

Parsec continues to impress, as we’ve now found a way to play NBA Jam: On Fire Edition by using it in conjunction with the Xbox One app. Between NBA Live 10 and the two NBA Jam games from EA Sports, we’re deeply entrenched in a 2009-2011 retro basketball gaming kick! Looking to the future, we’ve had our first glimpse of NBA 2K22. The game is set to feature the best Dirk Nowitzki face we’ve ever seen, but we’re sceptical about some of the touted gameplay improvements. On the other hand, matchmaking in The City and Seasons in MyCAREER sound promising. Meanwhile, EA Play gave us little hope for the future of NBA Live, leading us to join our fellow gamers in lament. We also reflect on our favourite teams to use in Play Now games.

NLSC Podcast #384: A Couple of Pre-Ordering, PC Nerds

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #384 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

The cover players, release date, and pre-order bonuses for NBA 2K22 have been revealed, confirming leaks and speculation, and drawing some boorish comments about one player in particular. Unfortunately, the PC version will be a prior gen port once again this year, and we have some thoughts to share on that. Despite the remarks of one wannabe content creator, PC gamers have a right to be dismayed…and to play NBA 2K, for that matter. The lack of a demo on all platforms is likewise disappointing. Elsewhere, a Tweet mentioning a partnership between LeBron James and EA has people talking, though we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves (again). We also touch on Steam Deck, and some listener responses to last week’s mailbag topics.

NLSC Podcast #383: It’s Still All Speculation

Episode #383 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

Before we started recording this week’s show, we played games of Double Dribble Playoff Edition and the SNES version of NBA Live 95. One holds up a little better than the other, but both were fun to revisit! Speaking of NBA Live, EA Sports are set to make an announcement regarding the return of one of their old series. Will it be their long-running NBA title, their college hoops series, or something else? Meanwhile, as the NBA 2K22 preview season looms, some apologists are already warming up their excuses. In this week’s mailbag, we’re talking about the peak era for basketball gaming, and underrated gameplay additions.

NLSC Podcast #382: A Community Connected

Episode #382 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

We haven’t been able to get enough of Parsec as of late, but we’re not the only ones taking a shine to it. More members of the community are participating in head-to-head games, with Parsec facilitating clashes in NBA 2K17 and NBA 2K19 using retro season and classic team mods. Speaking of retro season mods, which is our favourite so far? As for NBA Live 10, it’s still on our agenda, as we’ve got plenty more ideas for Fantasy Teams mode! Fresh NBA 2K22 rumours give us something else to talk about this week, though we still miss the longer and more exciting preview seasons of yesteryear. In this week’s mailbag, we answer a question about the new Space Jam game, which leads us to reflect on some other esoteric games starring basketball players.

NLSC Podcast #381: Recurrent Fun, Not Recurrent Revenue

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #381 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

We have a lot on our minds this week! Our NBA Live 10 sessions continued with another epic clash that delighted us with its authenticity. NBA Action 94 and 95 were also briefly in the rotation, and they had their interesting points. Unfortunately, NBA Live 15 and 16 provided a reminder of staples that have been missing from the series for years. Playing NBA Live 10 as well as NBA 2K14 on PS4 also leads us to reminisce about external factors that tainted our first impressions of games we later came to enjoy. Meanwhile, a comment blaming the community for recurrent revenue mechanics has us fired up; suffice to say, we disagree! We also cover a recent fix in NBA 2K21 Next Gen, and answer a mailbag question about gameplay improvements that we’re yet to see.

NLSC Podcast #380: Why Isn’t This On PC?

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #380 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

We’re not sure if it’s a first for modding as a whole, but we may have engaged in the first remote modding session in the history of our community! Our efforts ensured that we’ll be able to set up retro teams in NBA Live 10 quickly and easily, which we’ve already tried with fun results. We’ve also revisited NBA Jam: On Fire Edition and NBA Street Vol. 2 this week, and were reminded why we love them. Of course, it also makes us wistful about the current selection of basketball titles. Meanwhile, Madden 22 PC being a Current Gen port raises some concerns. We also catch up on recent mod releases including NBL 2K21 and a great Larry Bird face, and note a potential NBA 2K22 leak. In this week’s mailbag, we recall NBA Action 95 for the Sega Genesis, and compare toxicity among NBA 2K gamers to other communities.

NLSC Podcast #379: It’s Something Unpredictable

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #379 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

Owing to a mixture of fatigue and satisfaction with NBA 2K21, we’ve been getting our virtual hardwood fix elsewhere this past week. NBA 2K20, NBA Live 10, and even NBA Live 95 have been in the rotation, though NBA 2K20 reminded us of some woefully inaccurate ratings for players on the historical teams. We’ve also still trying to get more games working on Parsec. A recent favourite is receiving regular roster updates, and we’re inspired to brainstorm some out-of-the-box modding ideas. In this week’s mailbag, we consider the potential impact of NFL 2K on future NBA 2K titles. We also get philosophical about times in our lives that we’d revisit, for basketball gaming and other reasons.

NLSC Podcast #378: The Hangar & The Workshop

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #378 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

Having sorted out our issues with Parsec, we’ve enjoyed a full week of basketball gaming. From epic clashes with video game legends in NBA Live 10 to co-op play in NBA 2K Playgrounds 2, we’ve had a lot of fun on the virtual hardwood and blacktop this week! Spotlighting recent modding developments leads to us discussing various ideas for retro rosters, as well as philosophies for rating players. We also react to the recent leaks regarding the cover players for the standard and Legend editions of NBA 2K22. In this week’s mailbag, we’re looking back at the NBA 2K21 Next Gen trailer, and discussing some interesting issues with licensing and likeness rights.

NLSC Podcast #377: You Know It’s An NBA Game, Right?

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #377 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

We tip things off by paying tribute to the late Mark Eaton. Reflecting on the first two weeks of the revitalised NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week, we note that NBA-oriented gaming highlights are rarer these days. This leads to a discussion on the decline in popularity of NBA-oriented modes, in favour of online team play. We note that current attitudes towards the NBA and changing demographics among gamers play a huge role here. Meanwhile, things haven’t been as rosy with NBA Live 10 and Parsec this past week, but we’re not giving up our retro kick just yet. In this week’s mailbag, we’re talking about NBA Live possibly using the Frostbite engine, and looking back at NBA Courtside 2002.

NLSC Podcast #376: Showtime on the Virtual Hardwood

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #376 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

An idea for an NBA Live 10 game over Parsec resulted in an epic clash that produced some memorable highlights for us both. On that note, the return of the NLSC Top 10 Plays of the Week has us thinking about what makes good basketball video game highlights. We discuss how unique scenarios, rare animations, and context add importance, emotion, and just plain “oomph” to plays on the virtual hardwood. We’re also sorry that NBA Live 10’s Fantasy Teams mode is a thing of the past. In this week’s mailbag, we’re talking about RetroArch, and the possibility of special editions of NBA Live or NBA 2K that utilise old school aesthetics.

NLSC Podcast #375: The Gold Standard of Retro Hoops Gaming

Episode #375 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

The announced lineup for EA Play 2021 doesn’t include NBA Live, which has given life to more speculation and clickbait. We share our thoughts on the situation, and our expectations regarding any surprise announcements. We’ve also been having a lot of fun playing NBA Live 10 over Parsec, and while it makes us wistful at times, it’s also given us a new appreciation for the game. Raja Bell has also become a virtual hardwood legend. In the mailbag this week, we’re talking about the effect that basketball gaming discourse has on opinions and enjoyment, as well as some of the worst cyberfaces throughout the years.

NLSC Podcast #374: Contractual Obligations

Episode #374 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

It warms our hearts that gamers are still interested in watching User vs. User gameplay videos! Sadly, not everyone is open to the idea of playing on broadcast camera angles, but gatekeepers gonna gatekeep. Reports that Luka Doncic has broken his contract with EA Sports to sign with 2K Sports have caused a stir this week. We discuss the speculation, and reflect on what it might mean – if anything – for the fortunes and future of NBA Live. In this week’s mailbag, we’re taking another look back at the rough start for NBA Live on Xbox 360, and talking about Tecmo NBA Basketball and Tecmo Super NBA Basketball.

NLSC Podcast #373: Shiver With Anticipation

Episode #373 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

Our first foray into playing NBA 2K17 head to head using Parsec and Steam Remote Play didn’t go as well as we hoped, but we’re not giving up just yet. Following up on the announcement that prompted our main discussion in Episode #368, the PlayStation 3 Store is remaining open, preserving NBA Jam: On Fire Edition a little longer. Although the preview season is still months away, we’ve been thinking about past innovations that changed basketball gaming, and what would excite us for NBA 2K22. Surprisingly, it’s still not shoelace physics! In this week’s mailbag, we’re taking a look back at NBA Live 09 on PlayStation 2, and discuss buying prior gen games after we’ve moved on to a new console.

NLSC Podcast #372: Sports Gaming vs. Competitive Gaming

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #372 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Derek (aka Dee4Three) and I are your hosts for this weekly podcast that’s all about basketball gaming.

Roster editing has come to Basketball Classics, and we’re very impressed with what Josh and Dave have managed to implement. Meanwhile, the latest patch for NBA 2K21 Next Gen is slightly less exciting, but nevertheless contains a couple of important fixes. Taking a suggestion from Twitter, this week’s main discussion concerns the difference between sports gaming and competitive gaming, and the effects that the latter has had on the NBA 2K series. We talk about how gameplay and the online scene in NBA 2K could improve, and how NBA Live could capitalise on the situation. In this week’s mailbag, we reflect on Acclaim’s NBA Jam games, and the quality of sequels.
