NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #491 of the NLSC Podcast!

Two tiers of Season Passes have been confirmed for MyTEAM and MyCAREER in NBA 2K24. Needless to say, it was a controversial announcement! This week we’re taking a deep dive into the issue, examining the potential impact on the game, as well as Take-Two’s history of aggressive recurrent revenue mechanics. We also read out comments from community members; it’s not a spoiler to say that we’re not alone in being unimpressed by the adoption of Season Passes for premium content! Meanwhile, content creators that shill for greedy business practices seem to be getting called out, which we’re glad to see. All in all, NBA 2K24 could prove to be a tipping point for microtransactions in the series!

We’ve also got some small updates on a couple of modding projects. Inspired by Julius Erving’s recent comments, we also share our thoughts on personal bias and agendas in Top 10 lists and other rankings, noting the similarities between discussions of NBA history and classic basketball video games.

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #489 of the NLSC Podcast!

How much should basketball video games cost, from their base price to any microtransactions that we may choose to indulge in? A recent NBA 2K24 rumour regarding season passes in MyTEAM and MyCAREER has raised concerns about the possibility of additional costs moving forward. Naturally, both we and the community have a few thoughts on the matter; as you can probably guess, we’re not big fans! On a brighter note, there’s a new PlayStation 1 emulator that we recommend, along with some other retro gaming resources. We also react to Jeff Teague’s recent comments regarding James Harden and Dwyane Wade, and a shifting NBA narrative that’s about to start tying the talking heads up in knots.

To that end, we break down and react to everything we know so far. That also includes confirmation that the PC version will be a prior gen port once again, which has naturally drawn some strong reactions! NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #483 of the NLSC Podcast!

We’re taking a look back at Sony’s NBA 07 for PlayStation 3 this week, after successfully connecting to play a H2H game using PS Rewired. Although it was a bit of an oddball title in many ways, it had some strong points that highlight the importance of having alternatives to NBA 2K and NBA Live. Our experience with PS Rewired also prompts us to reflect on the different ways that we’re able to connect to play basketball video games these days. We also touch on the recent Twitter debate between members of Sim Nation and the Left-Right Cheesers; you can probably guess whose side we’re on! Meanwhile, in honour of a crazy alley-oop from our NBA 07 session, this week’s mailbag is all about bad mechanics.

What will the basketball gaming landscape look like in five years, as a new generation of consoles likely tips off? This week, we join the community in speculating on the future, from what we expect from NBA 2K to whether we anticipate NBA Live or any other competition returning. How long does the allure of the latest basketball game last? How often does it hold our attention until the next game comes out? This week, we’re joining the community in discussing when and why we’ve chosen to move on from the current release in recent years. We also follow up on last week’s look back at NBA Live 15 by revisiting the even more controversial NBA Live 14. Suffice to say, we were once again surprised by some of the details that we noticed! NBA Live 15 generally wasn’t well-received when it was released, but might it be somewhat overlooked today? A fun session playing the game over Parsec prompts us to take a deep dive into all of its pros and cons. Suffice to say it’s a mixed bag, but it might just work its way into our rotation! We also connected to play NBA Live 06 PC with a 2012 season roster, and were reminded of what a special release it was. In this week’s mailbag, we join the community in talking about how we play basketball in real life.
