NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #476 of the NLSC Podcast!

If you go could back and play any basketball video game for the first time, which one would it be? This week, we join the community in reminiscing about the hoops titles that we wish we could experience anew, because of how much we were floored by our first impressions of them. A couple of other games that we’ve since changed our minds about, and would’ve liked to have had a better first impression of, likewise get a mention! After playing it over Parsec, we also take a look back at NBA Inside Drive 2004, an Xbox exclusive from Microsoft that more than held its own against stiff competition from the other 2004 season releases.

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #475 of the NLSC Podcast!

How does our enthusiasm for real basketball and the NBA motivate us to play video games? This week, we’re joining the community in reminiscing about the games and other circumstances that made us want to pick up a controller and hit the virtual hardwood! We also reflect on the very enjoyable but underrated AND1 Streetball for PlayStation 2, and marvel at the attention to detail on the women’s teams in NCAA March Madness 99, following a session with both games. There’s also been some great news for NBA 2K23 modding, while a play from last week’s Top 10 inspires a brief look back at the wide variety of instant replay angles in NBA Live 2000 PC.

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #473 of the NLSC Podcast!

There can be no doubt that we’re passionate about basketball video games, but we do have interests outside of the virtual hardwood, too. This week, we’re discussing some of the other titles that have been in our rotations as of late, as well as reflecting on other games that we’ve spent countless hours with over the years. Not surprisingly, we have some similar gaming habits, no matter the genre! After sharing our memories, we open up the mailbag to see what else the community enjoys playing. There’s also a mod teaser to share, a thrilling game of NBA Live 95 PC to recap, and the latest results from our NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament.

NLSC Podcast #472: A Deep Dive Into NBA Action ’95

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #472 of the NLSC Podcast!

NBA Action ’95 for the Sega Genesis was a game ahead of its time, yet it’s often overlooked compared to other 90s hoops titles. As such, we’re making it the subject of a deep dive this week, from its gameplay to its historical content to the interesting history of the NBA Action series. A listener question also prompts us to compare the NBA Playgrounds games to NBA Jam: On Fire Edition; do Saber’s games hold a candle to EA Sports’ second (and to date, final) NBA Jam release? We also catch up on the latest from Year 5 in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER, and some other fun happenings around the community, including the 100th edition of the Top 10.

John provides insights into the creation of this fantastic mod, and also shares stories of his history with modding, including projects for NBA Street Vol. 2 and Tecmo Super Bowl. We also chat about the philosophy behind ratings in the NBA Jam series, his discovery of hidden assets for Michael Jordan in the 2010 reboot of NBA Jam, and his origins as a basketball gamer. NLSC Podcast #470: Quality Time on the Virtual Hardwood

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #470 of the NLSC Podcast!

Which basketball video games rank among our most-played all-time? This week, we join the community in reminiscing about the various titles that we’ve racked up the most hours in over the years. We’re also able to talk about the NBA Jam: Legends On Fire Edition mod at last, and it’s no surprise that the community shares our enthusiasm for it! johnz1 will also be joining us to talk about the mod next week, so stay tuned. The Elite 8 of our NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament is in the books, so we reflect on the action thus far, and look ahead to the Final Four. We also pay tribute to the late, great Willis Reed.

NLSC Podcast #469: March Madness in Video Games

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #469 of the NLSC Podcast!

With March Madness underway, there’s no better time to talk about college basketball video games! This week, we’re joining the community in reflecting on our history with NCAA on the virtual hardwood, listing some of our all-time favourite college basketball titles, as well as a couple of regional variants. We also provide an update on the latest action and results from our NCAA Basketball 10 Parsec Tournament, and discuss plans for some College Slam content. Revisiting the possibility of college basketball video games some day making a return, we wonder whether an NCAA title would be EA Sports’ ticket back into the basketball gaming space, or if Visual Concepts would just swoop in and steal their thunder once again.

NLSC Podcast #468: Our Favourite Basketball Game Mods

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #468 of the NLSC Podcast!

What better way to celebrate March Modness than by discussing some of our all-time favourite mods? We join the community in reminiscing about the mods that we’ve most enjoyed playing with, as well as the ones that inspired us to get into the hobby. We’re also sharing some stories behind creating fixes for games, and recap a session with a work-in-progress missing legends roster for NBA 2K10. The NLSC NCAA Basketball 10 Tournament has also tipped off with an intense game, and we’re looking forward to more great virtual hardwood action. Indeed, whether it’s picking up tools to mod or firing up favourites to play, we’re mad about basketball gaming this March!

NLSC Podcast #467: Retro Content & Respect for Legends

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #467 of the NLSC Podcast!

As March Modness tips off, we’ve received word of an exciting retro project that we’re keen to see come to fruition. We’ve also been working on our own projects – some of which have already been released – and announce our upcoming NCAA Basketball 10 tournament. Recapping some recent retro pick-ups leads us to reflect on how much fun it is to play on original hardware, even with the convenience of emulators. While we’re in a retro mood, we also discuss the historical content that NBA Live needs to have if/when it returns, and share some suggestions from our listeners. In this week’s mailbag, we challenged the community to guess the top-rated Legends in NBA Live 2004, and point out some of the most disrespectful ratings for historical players in those rosters.

NLSC Podcast #466: Puzzling Ratings in NBA Jam TE

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #466 of the NLSC Podcast!

Despite undoubtedly being a classic release, NBA Jam Tournament Edition features some weird ratings. We’re spotlighting some of the most egregious examples, and speculating on how they might’ve come about. Needless to say, Yinka Dare gets a mention! We’ve also got plans for March Modness, which will be tipping off in a couple of days. As we always like to do, we recap our recent sessions on the virtual hardwood, including updates on our progress in MyCAREER and MyLEAGUE. This also leads to a potentially controversial comparison of NBA Live 06 and NBA 2K6 for Xbox 360! In this week’s mailbag, we join the community in sharing our ideal gaming experiences, from preferred modes to how we get set up to play.

NLSC Podcast #465: A History of Annoying Mechanics

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #465 of the NLSC Podcast!

Another NBA All-Star Weekend is upon us, but sadly, the event has basically lost its lustre for us. Call us grumpy old heads if you must, but we miss genuine competition in the midseason classic! On a brighter note, we had a blast partaking in All-Star activities in NBA Live 08 – including creating a 1988 dunk contest video, and enjoying a wild three-point shootout that went to a tiebreaker – as well as revisiting NBA 2K13 to play some Blacktop. As promised on last week’s show, we’re taking a deep dive into the most annoying mechanics in the history of basketball gaming, with our listeners also sharing their biggest frustrations on the virtual hardwood.

NLSC Podcast #464: We Want A New NBA Jam

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #464 of the NLSC Podcast!

After some messing around, we were able to connect to play a co-op session of NBA Full Court Press. Although it isn’t one of the all-time classics, it’s nevertheless an intriguing game to revisit today. We’ve also got some further progress reports on modding projects, including the revival of the All-Time Teams roster for NBA Live 96. With the 30th Anniversary of NBA Jam upon us this year, we’re itching for a new release, and we’re not alone in that regard! We discuss our ideas for a hypothetical new NBA Jam, as well as the community’s responses of what they’d like to see. Finally, we make some plans for our basketball gaming rotations through the rest of February.

NLSC Podcast #463: Franchise Mode Gurus

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #463 of the NLSC Podcast!

Following a co-op session of NBA Live 10, we may have to bring it back into the rotation! We also connected to play NBA Live 98 PC with an old NLSC roster, and note that despite improvements in its immediate successors, it holds up just as well. Meanwhile, following up on a basketball management game riddled with microtransactions, it’s clear that the developer has no interest in goodwill or constructive feedback. We’re also talking about franchise mode follies, including the phenomena of “rosteritis” and “tradeitis”. We note how franchise mode burnout is similar to modding fatigue, and share tips on how to have a successful franchise game. In this week’s mailbag, community members share the origin stories of how they became basketball fans and gamers.

NLSC Podcast #462: NBA Live 09 PS2 & Algorithm Blues

NLSC Podcast Logo

From courtside of the virtual hardwood, it’s Episode #462 of the NLSC Podcast!

As promised on last week’s show, this week we’re discussing some of the problems with the influencer movement, as well as our frustrations with algorithms. Before we get into that though, we’re taking a deep dive into NBA Live 09 for PlayStation 2. For all its faults, this rather overlooked game (at least in our community) did have some strong points! We also recap our recent sessions with NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 and NBA 2K19, and provide some updates on a couple of our modding projects for NBA 2K. In this week’s mailbag, we asked the community how many hours per week they spend on the virtual hardwood; or, for that matter, modding games.
