NLSC Podcast #391: A Tale of Two Developer Blogs

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

The NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament has tipped off, and it's been a blast so far! It seems we've also found the chief cause of input lag: location, location, location. Nevertheless, our Road Trip continues in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, and a recent session produced an exciting moment indeed. Parsec has also allowed the community to connect and play with some fantastic retro season mods for NBA 2K10 and NBA 2K11 PC, which don't get enough attention. We also address a couple of concerning issues in the modding community. The latest NBA 2K22 developer blogs cover gameplay and MyTEAM, and we're a little more positive about how the latter is shaping up. Finally, could we see some mods for Basketball Classics in the future?

NLSC Podcast #392: First Impressions of NBA 2K22

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

NBA 2K22 is out, and many people are calling it the best NBA 2K game ever. We're not so sure about that, but we do have some initial impressions to share, including lists of pros and cons for Current Gen and Next Gen. An issue with the PC release will also hopefully be sorted out ASAP. The addition of Evan Eschmeyer to the 2003 Mavericks prompts us to share some interesting trivia about his career, and its impact on the virtual hardwood. Elsewhere, the NBA Live 10 Tournament rolls on with some exciting games, and NBA 2K14 continues to be a captivating retro kick. In this week's mailbag, we're reflecting on some memorable basketball video game launches, and titles that impressed us from Day One.

NLSC Podcast #393: Failure to Launch

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

A first round series in the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament concluded with a fittingly competitive contest. On a more unfortunate note, postal delays continue to keep the PlayStation 5 version of NBA 2K22 from reaching one of us, but the other has some further impressions to share. We discuss the state of MyTEAM in this year's game, and provide an update on an issue with the PC version. We also talk about balance, and frustration with criticism being dismissed out of hand. After NBA 2K16 comes up, we're moved to reflect on the history of issues with retro teams, and the Hall of Fame Ratings scale. In a reversal of last week's mailbag, we also talk about the worst basketball game launches, as well as some of the most frustrating mechanics over the years.

NLSC Podcast #394: You Mean, It's Not Just Us?

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

The Saga of the Missing Pre-Order has come to an end - sort of - which means we have further impressions of NBA 2K22 Next Gen to share! They're mostly positive, though we do have some criticisms of the MyTEAM economy and MyCAREER grind. We also touch on the most recent patches for the game, and discuss a refreshingly honest review that brings up many of the issues we often make a point of covering. From the impact of recurrent revenue mechanics to the reality of 2K fatigue, we're clearly not alone in our views on basketball gaming! A Windows 10 upgrade has also opened up new gaming opportunities with Parsec, including our semi-finals series in the NBA Live 10 Tournament. Finally, this week's mailbag includes suggestions from the community for new classic teams.

NLSC Podcast #395: Retro Kicks, Lucky Breaks, & Modding Ideas

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

An extended retro kick with NBA 2K14 will soon wrap up, as the end of a season in MyCAREER looms. We reflect on having a new appreciation for the game, and compare the MyCAREER experience to more recent NBA 2K titles. Patch 1.6 for NBA 2K22 Next Gen came close to causing heartbreak, but fortunately a further update seems to have resolved the issue. We share further impressions of this year's game, and recap our adventures in MyTEAM. Super Dunk Shot and Kobe Bryant in NBA Courtside were our games of choice in a recent Parsec session, with both proving to still be fun all these years later. Building off a recent NLSC Forum topic, we also discuss some creative modding ideas for the community to consider.

NLSC Podcast #396: A Couple of Franchise Players

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

We were pleasantly surprised when this week's Monday Tip-Off, which discussed the rising cost of MyCAREER, gained some traction on Twitter. There was a lot of agreement, but predictably also some apologist replies, prompting us to respond. Nevertheless, we're grateful that the article resonated with our fellow gamers! We also catch up on the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament, and discuss our recent gripes with MyTEAM in the Current Gen version of NBA 2K22. Elsewhere, a retro kick in NBA 2K14's MyCAREER may be ending, but not before the discovery of a rather nasty bug that some gamers may have overlooked all those years ago. On the bright side, dabbling with MyGM has inspired an overdue return to franchise gaming, which we're both passionate about.

NLSC Podcast #397: Asking The Big Questions

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

A birthday prompts us to once again reflect on long tenures in the basketball gaming community, and the stigma against gaming as an adult. This leads to us getting a little deep with some handy life advice for our listeners, young and old! After catching up on some modding developments and discussing the end of a retro kick with NBA 2K14, we start to ask each other the big questions; well, the big questions about basketball gaming, anyway. Our conversation covers games we'd give a second chance to, underutilised features, alternate choices for franchise teams, and modding projects we'd undertake given the time and resources. With the FIFA series possibly rebranding, we also consider new titles for NBA Live, and read some suggestions from the community.

NLSC Podcast #398: Can We Get A Transparency Badge?

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Despite some technical difficulties, we managed to play the first game in our semi-final matchup in the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament! We also still can't help but wonder about retro modding possibilities for the PS3 version of NBA Live 10, especially with roster files being transferrable between real hardware and the emulator. Elsewhere, one of us has unlocked the NBA Street team in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, but sadly they're not quite as good as one might hope. After following up on a topic from last week by reading out some listener suggestions for re-branding NBA Live, we discuss the controversy surrounding Badges in NBA 2K22 Current Gen. Unfortunately, 2K has once again lacked transparency and tact in addressing the issue. We also make future plans for the virtual hardwood.

NLSC Podcast #399: NBA Live Mythbusters

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Following a session with the Xbox 360 version of NBA Live 06 over Parsec, we're compelled to take an in-depth look back at the controversial title. In particular, we take it upon ourselves to bust a few myths regarding the game's quality, and what actually led to its less than stellar reception. We also got NBA Live 09 working over Parsec, and it too made a positive second impression on us. Indeed, we may have found a couple of new retro gaming kicks! In other retro gaming news, it appears as though content for NBA 2K17 may be gone forever; at least if it's installed fresh today. Nevertheless, our advocacy for retro basketball gaming continues, even as we play NBA 2K22!

NLSC Podcast #400: Just Like We Remembered

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Welcome to the 400th Episode of the NLSC Podcast! To mark the occasion, we're reflecting on significant milestones in basketball gaming: the developments, good and bad, that shaped the genre. We also profile the infamous NBA Live 07 for Xbox 360. Was it as bad as most of us remember it being? Yes, but it's still interesting to discuss! In this week's mailbag, we provide further thoughts on the dunk meter in NBA 2K22 Next Gen. We also pick up where we left off in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition's Road Trip, nominate games that we'd like to see re-made, and list our favourite teams to play with over the years.

NLSC Podcast #401: A Double-Edged Sword

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

We have our likes and dislikes when it comes to NBA 2K22, but what would someone who hasn't played the series in over ten years think of it? We have an answer from the community, leading us to discuss bad first impressions. Of course, first impressions don't always last, thanks to the abundance of patches and tuning fixes. In that regard, post-release support these days is undoubtedly a double-edged sword. It's also a factor in the ongoing conversation about alleged skill gaps. Meanwhile, a MyTEAM poll has revealed some interesting statistics regarding NBA 2K's demographics that suggest we're not that old after all. We also discuss playing NBA Live 06 for Xbox 360 co-op over Parsec, the addictiveness of grinding, and some of the community's Virtual Hardwood Legends.

NLSC Podcast #402: Winners Don't Quit

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

NBA Live 19 still has an active online scene, but sadly it displays similar toxicity to NBA 2K's community. We dissect the issue of poor online sportsmanship, and lack of competitiveness in what is supposedly a competitive environment. While we're in the mood for callouts, we also respond to some recent comments that were unnecessarily snarky. On a brighter note, our second attempt at a co-op game in NBA Live 06 for Xbox 360 over Parsec has us pumped to dive into a Season. Elsewhere, Take Two's attitude towards Grand Theft Auto modders has us wondering if we should be worried about our own modding community, especially with 2K understandably cracking down on MyCAREER hackers. In this week's mailbag, we're reflecting on games that we wish we could've personally modded, or downloaded mods for.

NLSC Podcast #403: These Labours Of Love

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

The second game of our Semi-Finals series in the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament was marred by some technical issues, but we had much better luck with other games during a Parsec session. We recap one of the wildest games of NBA Jam Tournament Edition that we've ever played, using a fantastic 2014 season roster mod. Another highlight came when we revisited the PC version of NBA Live 96, and couldn't help gushing about the presentation. Double Dribble also got a run (CORNER THREE!), though it did show its age. In this week's mailbag, we discuss the arguments for and against paid mods, and how to avoid burnout when working on big modding projects.

NLSC Podcast #404: Cheese Not Found

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

After an intense battle, the Semi-Finals of the NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament are over, and the Finals match-up has been set. Once again, we note the importance of competing until the final buzzer. Following on from last week's revisiting of NBA Live 96 PC, we played NBA Live 97 PC over Parsec, and basked in the radical 90s goodness of its presentation. We also played NBA Live 16, and tested a work-in-progress mod for NBA 2K16. Meanwhile, the latest patch for NBA 2K22 Next Gen has cut down on cheese, and some gamers aren't happy. Conversely, we're all for it, and push back on the suggestion that the game shouldn't be realistic. We also reflect on the importance of shot timing mechanics.

NLSC Podcast #405: Slow Motion, Signature Style

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

An eye-catching statistic regarding the Lakers this year, and some other recent NBA observations, explain a lot about The Rec (and why we're happy to avoid the online scene). Unfortunately, even the franchise experience in NBA 2K22 hasn't been appealing, due to the gameplay feeling dry. On the plus side, NBA 2K17 has been fun to dust off, and it leads us to reflect on one of our all-time favourite basketball video games. We once again note that gameplay mechanics aren't automatically good just because we're able to get used to and master them. Elsewhere, preliminary plans for the next NLSC Tournament have begun, with the community voting on the game. A new roster with fixed retro teams is also worth checking out on PlayStation 5. In this week's mailbag, we're talking about slow motion dunks, signature moves, and other old school features that we miss and would love to see return.

NLSC Podcast #406: What A Croc!

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Crocs have been added as footwear in NBA 2K22's MyCAREER, and we're...underwhelmed. This leads us to discuss 2K's priorities, and how we'd prefer that they make fairer deals with historical players, not to mention finally license some prominent absentees. Voting has closed on the game for the next NLSC Tournament, and one of us may have put our hand on the scales. While we've been enjoying playing a variety of older titles as of late, certain games do make us miss enhancements from newer releases. To that point, we reflect on how it took an unusually long time for NBA 2K to adopt right stick dribbling controls, and an overlooked mechanic in NBA Live. We also cover some recent retro roster modding developments, and resolve to keep playing the games that we  find the most appealing in 2022.

NLSC Podcast #407: Christmas Special 2021

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

It's our 2021 season finale, which means it's time for a (slightly belated) Christmas special! We recap our recent Parsec sessions, which featured NBA Live 99 and NBA in the Zone 2. There's also a matter with the Top 10 Plays of the Week that we feel the need to address. After that, it's time for the listener mailbag! This week, we join our listeners in sharing some of our favourite Christmas-related basketball and basketball gaming memories, and special moments playing with friends and family. In the spirit of the season, it seems that the virtual hardwood has brought many of us closer to the people we love.

NLSC Podcast #408: The Worst Basketball Video Game Ever

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

The NLSC NBA Live 10 Tournament has drawn to a close, and we must say, it was a success! We're looking forward to future tournaments with games such as NBA Jam and NCAA Basketball 09. However, one game that we definitely won't be using is Kidz Sports Basketball. After playing it together, we're inclined to call it the worst basketball game ever made. Thankfully, we've also played some much better games as of late, including NBA 2K13, NBA in the Zone, and Basketball Classics. There's also some modding news to recap, and a few teasers of our own to drop! In this week's mailbag, we're talking about fighting with friends and family over disagreements on the virtual hardwood.

Special Guest: Stildo33

Stildo33 joins the show to talk about his amazing retro season roster mods for NBA 2K19 PC. We discuss some of the challenges of making such large projects, and a few of his plans for future updates. Like us, Stildo33 has also been having a blast with Parsec, and is all about bringing the community together with the app. He also recalls one of his most memorable battles on the virtual hardwood, which actually saw him and a friend get physical over a three day period! We also discuss the shutdown of the NBA 2K20 servers and what it means for MyCAREER gamers, as well as some other fond basketball gaming memories.

What do you believe 2K should focus on the most for their next release?

It was cool to have another roster creator on the show, you have to do that more often guys, you should try to have Hawk, Skoadam, Thunder Shaq on the show for example.

About 2K23, at this point tbh i have no expectations ; whatever i wish it will not happen.
2K/VC is so greedy, now, and due to those fake nextgen consoles, the lack of contenders, the game will probably be mostly the same for the next 3/4 years.

I really enjoyed the chat with Ken (Stildo33).

Will be great having more guests on this year.
