You should be able to, somehow, exclude people from being able to get any future updates that ask questions in regards to "eta" and "difficulty settings"... Kinda like the soup nazi on Seinfeld. No game for you!!

One more thing... johnz1 is doing something pretty friggin remarkable with his free time. This project is pretty Awesome. It should be noted and respected as such going further...

Also... Suns Chuck needs a 5 3pt rating, and Philly Chuck needs an 8 blk and a 9 str. The Staples Center needs to be replaced by The Forum court... The Staples Center is lame. The Bird/McHale Celtics are the best team in the game and should remain as such. The only other thing that would be paramount is Johnny Most sayin "Boomshakalaka!!". Thank you johnz1 for your tireless efforts.

Where can I learn how to do what you are doing? Or at least mod when your guide comes out? I want to create similar updates to legacy games and wanted to ask the best. Thanks in advance

Just tried the mod today after modding my PS3 and this is one of the best virtual basketball experiences I've had in a long time! The teams featured really make it feel like the ultimate experience for both a Jam and retro fan. I've tested this on the 4.91 Evilnat CFW and so far I haven't run into any issues and I'm having a blast right now! Fantastic work!

Thank you, but let me assure you that I'm not any kind of expert in rom hacking and modding. The people decompiling games are the real heroes. Check them out if you haven't heard of these projects:
https://www.resetera.com/threads/decomp ... ta.682687/
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/05/ ... urce-code/

I don't have a great answer for a starting place. I think romhacking.net's guide is OK (https://www.romhacking.net/start) but, as with any guide you'll find, it may not be exactly relevant to what you'll want to work on.

With reverse engineering, it's really best to learn as much as you can about everything, starting from the ground up, because you never really know what is required when you start working on a game. I know this is very generic and possibly unhelpful advice, but that's really how it is. You usually have to have a solid foundation of knowledge about data storage and representation, hex editing, compression, and many other low-level topics. Related to this, I would find documentation on games that have already been hacked and try to edit them manually (don't use any game-specific tools) using the technical information that has been provided. The purpose of this would be to become comfortable with how things can be implemented with a variety of games.

Sorry, I haven't finished it. Here's the update I just posted in the thread about my JAM projects:

I made a strong push to get it done in late 2023. I wrote 9,000 words. I created many templates. I have the DB editor app working. But after a couple months, I just ran out of gas and burned out. I changed back to working on a new OFE project, and that's where I am now. There is still much work to do on the guide, and I am certainly going to do it. I hope to work on it after the next project is released.

Hey Johnz1, I hope you're doing well.

Not rushing you at all - just wondering if you have had a chance to add the feature to adjust the CPU difficulty as they are currently impossible to beat after progressing a little further from the beginning. Having the ability to tone down their difficulty then slower working up to harder levels would be very helpful.

Many thanks,

Hi John. Fantastic work here. Few questions. I have a jailbroken ps3 with managunz and webman but cant get the game running. The psn store no longer carries jam so i have the disc version. The 2 ps3 pkg files are on a drive but where am i supposed to put those or how do you install them because i dont get any prompt to do anything with them. Do i need to use rebug? Any comments are appreciated. Thanks for the hard work.

Hello Johnz1, just tried out your mod and had to make an account to say THANK YOU for doing this. You’ve kept NBA jam alive better than EA and I much prefer this to nba 2K playgrounds.

This was a lot of work to modify such a “random” game with the level of care and detail you have put in. It has allowed me to revisit one of my most played and beloved games of all time, but it’s even better than I remember with more Pistons players, Reggie Miller, and new guys like Luka in addition to your campaign mode.

Really excited to see that you still have plans to add more players and features. Even if you didn’t, though, this is one of my favorite things ever, great job! Hope it’s been fun to figure out all these things about the game and connect with the community. NBA Jam OFE is the best arcade basketball game around in my opinion and it’s blowing my mind that you made this available to keep it updated in the modern era.

The ability to change the difficulty of Road Trip matchups is in the 'bounce.db' editor app that will be included in the modding guide - whenever that's ready.

I still recommend getting better by playing exhibition mode because you're absolutely wrong about the Real AI difficulty being impossible. Just look:

You need to install the two PKG's. I think file managers can usually do this. This video might help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0OZuQHrFCg

Thanks so much. I love getting messages like this.
I haven't released anything in more than a year, but I still work on JAM almost every day. I hope to release a new project this summer and I'm sure you'll like it too
