Celtics capitalise on best odds, but who do they take?
Image Image Image

For only the second time in Franchise history, the Boston Celtics will have the #1 pick in the NBA Draft. However, after three consectutive years of consensus #1 picks, the Celtics find themselves spoilt for choice across the board. With Indiana teammates Victor Oladipo & Cody Zeller, Georgetown's Otto Porter, or UNLV's Anthony Bennett all likely to be the top choice this year, the Celtics have a plethora of top talent to build around.

A significant loss for the Grizzlies, though at least they've still got a budding star in Kawhi Leonard.

Harden to return to Thunder on 3-year deal

The Oklahoma City Thunder dynasty doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon, with James Harden returning to join MVP's Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook for at least another 3 years. Harden turned down offers from countless franchises to be the #1 option, however looks to be locked in with his superstar teammates in creating the most terrifying trio in NBA history.

ZBo heads to Charlotte, Sixers lose pieces to Indy, Utah

Image Image Image
After rejecting his player option to stay in Memphis, Zach Randolph has officially joined a slew of new talent in Charlotte as they look to turn a new page following an embarrassing 2012-13 season. Following their own Finals appearance, the Philadelphia 76ers will head into the 2013-14 season missing two vital pieces of their core in Louis Williams and Taj Gibson, who have both left the City of Brotherly Love and have already put the Sixers on the back foot to defend their East title.

Ibaka returns to the Thunder

Image
The Thunder are bringing back another vital piece in Serge Ibaka, who looked very likely to fly the nest for a new destination. With arguably one of the strongest starting 5's we've ever seen, can anyone stop this dynasty?

Roy comes out of retirement, heads to Windy City

Image
Brandon Roy has made a remarkable comeback after all health in his knees seemed to be lost only two years ago. The former superstar is joining a Chicago team looking to back up their #1 seed performance from last season.

Re: The 2K10 & Beyond Project - Season 13/14: Season Preview

Postby jubba910 on Fri May 07, 2021 12:17 pm

2013-14 Season Preview

Who can stop Oklahoma City? The Thunder seem to have a firm grasp already on the Larry O'Brien trophy, with the strongest starting 5 the league has possibly seen since the Chicago Bulls of the 1990's. It was another season of unpredictability, with the Philadelphia 76ers getting only two games away from a championship, when most deemed their title hopes dashed for a decade with the loss of Andre Iguodala. There's a new breed of contender brewing around the league, with lowly Franchises such as the Memphis Grizzlies & Minnesota Timberwolves proving to be true contenders, while perennial contenders like the Boston Celtics & Denver Nuggets are building again from the ground up, and a twilight period truly begins for the well-seasoned squads of the Lakers and Mavericks. Their may be some breathing room between the Thunder and the rest of the league, however if previous seasons have shown, anything is possible.

New Orleans turns over a new leaf as the Pelicans
Image

Fitting with their youthful roster, the New Orleans Hornets are no more, siding with the Pelicans as their new moniker. With exciting talent such as Klay Thompson, Tobias Harris & Andre Drummond alongside David Lee and Darren Collison, it's never been a better time to turn a new leaf and re-brand the team for The Big Easy. With the "Hornets" name now free, it raises another question, could Charlotte be in line to return to their roots?

LeBron enters Player Option year in New York
Image

It's hard to look at LeBron's time in New York as anything but a failure. With zero Conference Finals appearances and only one top four finish, his legacy is begging for a crowning achievement of a Championship. With the gamble on the level-headed championship-tested duo of Tim Duncan & Tony Parker as his running mates alongside DeMarcus Cousins, the talent has to live up to the hype this year, or the Knicks may be in for an even darker future than what plagued them throughout the 2000's. With no doubt every team calling his agent at the end of this season, will he decide to stick around at MSG, or fight for a title somewhere else?

Division Previews

Eastern Conference – Atlantic Division

Image Image Image Image Image

With a full offseason under their belt, this new-look Knicks squad should be a short-priced favourite to win the division. After the perennial rise of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook in OKC, LeBron James has to be feeling the heat as the argument for the league's best player seems to be up for debate. Dwight Howard and the Nets seemed to be a step behind when it came time to perform in the playoffs, with sidekicks Carlos Boozer and Devin Harris taking a step back in production, it could be a year of moves as the Barclays Center looks to become a feared place to play. Despite a Finals appearance, the loss of Louis Williams and Taj Gibson severely dampens the Sixers' chances of heading back to the top, though with the continued development of Avery Bradley alongside Jrue Holiday, Philadelphia look to still be one of the best defensive teams in the league. The North lead by Chris Bosh look to be hanging by a thread with their aging stars, but with DeMar DeRozan as a shining sign of the future, the Raptors could reset their lineup and be back in the hunt. The rebuilding project begins under Brad Stevens, with Chandler Parsons and Victor Oladipo seen as the future of the franchise. It could be another missed postseason for the Celtics, but a lower position in the lottery could be seen as a successful season.

Eastern Conference – Central Division

Image Image Image Image Image

After being robbed of their best chance since the Jordan Bulls era due to an injury to star Derrick Rose, the Windy City is back with a vengeance, including a returning Brandon Roy to boost their winning potential. With the addition of star guard Louis Williams alongside Ty Lawson, the Pacers look set to be a contender again this season, even if they slightly lack behind others in the Conference in the category of star power. The Bucks seemed to be on the verge of a shift heading into last season, but it may have been a bit early. The formidable duo of Paul George and Kemba Walker will have no more excuses this season, as Milwaukee pushes for prominence in the East. J.R. Smith continues to lead the Cavaliers as their shining white hope of a better future, now in their third season removed of LeBron James. A majority of eyes will also rest on Nicolas Batum, seen to be another legitimate star in the making. The Pistons continue to wallow at the bottom of the East, though with another top pick and potential franchise PG in Trey Burke alongside Harrison Barnes & Enes Kanter, the Motor City can only rise up.

Eastern Conference – Southeast Division

Image Image Image Image Image

The Heat look set to dominate again this season, with Kyrie Irving undoubtably the new #1 option in South Beach alongside hometown hero Dwyane Wade. The Hawks and Bobcats met in the ECSF, though it seems as if they're passing ships in the night. The ever-stable Hawks again look dangerous, though without a convincing start, it may be time to shift pieces to better accomodate the rise of some of their young stars, in particular Kenneth Faried, who looks like a bonafide starter. Major changes were needed, and major changes have been made in Charlotte, with Zach Randolph and Jarrett Jack looking to lead the way for the Bobcats as they look to forget their previous season and build again towards another Finals appearance. Further development of Iman Shumpert and Gordon Hayward are key for the Magic this season, but a Playoff appearance last season could suggest Orlando is recovering post-D12 even faster than originally thought. The year to flip the switch in Washington? Al Jefferson's major contract could prove difficult, but the selection of Nerlens Noel shows the Wizards are looking beyond. Evan Turner failed to impress after a Sixth Man of the Year award in 2011-12, so it may be time to clear house in DC and start fresh.

Western Conference - Pacific Division

Image Image Image Image Image
The Lakers still look the most threatening in the Pacific, with the Clippers close behind as we look forward to another matchup of Kobe & Pau vs Melo & Griffin. The Kings with a full offseason of Paul Pierce look the most threatening they've looked yet. Another playoff appearance looks certain, but can The Truth lead them to the promised land? Post-Championship Hangover, the Warriors' Splash Brothers of Stephen Curry and Eric Gordon need frontcourt help urgently, and have hitched their wagon to top 5 pick Anthony Bennett. The Suns look to bounce back from John Wall-less season, though regression in Michael Beasley and Greg Oden could prove fatal, with Phoenix possibly looking at another rebuild.

Western Conference – Southwest Division

Image Image Image Image Image

Is this the year of the Grizzlies? No team looks as busting at the seams with talent than Memphis, with expert picks landing them two stars on the bench in Kawhi Leonard and Eric Bledsoe. The hot seat is on Rudy Gay and his looming $27m salary next year, who could be sent off to a rebuild to allow Leonard in particular to shine. The Rockets' duo of Amare and Iguodala seem to have their third amigo in Kyle Lowry, as H-Town continues their chase to match their 2009-10 championship run. It's a new era in San Antonio, and after grinding to a 8th seed last season, the Spurs need another running mate to be a legitimate contender. Danilo Gallinari looks promising, but after gutting their frontcourt are in dire need of help. The waning days of the Dirk-led Mavericks may be upon us, with a disappointing finish last year compounded with another year of a similar lineup that took them to the WCF only a few seasons ago. Widespread changes from Mike Cuban's offices seem to be on the cards. No longer the Hornets, the new-look Pelicans continue to build hype around Andre Drummond, Tobias Harris & Klay Thompson in the Big Easy, adding another promising talent in Michael Carter-Williams to lead their bench unit.

Western Conference – Northwest Division

Image Image Image Image Image

The reigning Champions have never had a bigger lock on the top spot in not only their division, but the Conference. But is there enough ball to share amongst Durant, Westbrook and Harden for an entire season? After their return to the Playoffs for the first time in just under a decade last season, the Timberwolves lead by Kevin Love are in the box seat to not only make the playoffs, but be in the upper echelon of the Conference. Utah's trio of Deron Williams, Anthony Davis and Paul Millsap look to have another serious piece on the horizon, with Jimmy Butler overcoming his knee injury from last year to be completely healthy and a weapon on both ends of the floor. With the reigning Rookie of the Year, the Blazers continue to hold a solid position with LaMarcus Aldridge & Damian Lillard, and now have a full offseason with their acquired deadline pieces of Thaddeus Young and Carl Landry to cement their team identity in a packed Western Conference. Unlike the Cavaliers with LeBron James, the Nuggets loss of Carmelo Anthony continues to plague the Nuggets. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will have his best opportunity to lead the Mile High City and develop an all-round game as Denver is no doubt on their way back to the lottery barring a miracle.

Award Predictions

Most Valuable Player
Image
LeBron James, New York Knicks

There's never been a bigger chip on LeBron's shoulder than now after OKC taking the last two MVP awards, and with a full offseason with his new teammates, this is set to be the most dominant season of his career.

Rookie of the Year
Image
Victor Oladipo, Boston Celtics

Last year was a deviation away from the top pick winning ROY, but with an open floor and the distribution of Rajon Rondo, Victor Oladipo looks to be the man in Beantown.

Defensive Player of the Year
Image
Dwight Howard, Brooklyn Nets

As the anchor of Brooklyn's defense, D12 is hard to pick against to pick up another DPOY.

Most Improved Player
Image
Jimmy Butler, Utah Jazz

Coming off a knee injury that hampered his sophomore year, Jimmy Butler is in the box seat to become a deadly swingman in Utah.

Sixth Man of the Year
Image
Kawhi Leonard, Memphis Grizzlies

If Rudy Gay is set to stay in Memphis, it's a no-brainer that Leonard should take this award home, though with a trade potentially going down, Eric Bledsoe is also strongly in the mix.

Coach of the Year
Image
David Joerger, Memphis Grizzlies

Stepping into the Head Coach position after six years as an assistant, Joerger will be steering the most promising squad in Grizzlies history, and could pull off a truly memorable season in The Bluff City.

The Project definitely hasn't been kind to LeBron. Maybe he should've taken his talents to South Beach after all.

Gordon strikes as first season-ending injury

Ben Gordon will sit out the last year of his expensive contract in Detroit after suffering a torn MCL. With the Pistons already deemed a lottery team, does this further cement them as a team without cause?

Slow starts galore for Playoff contenders

Some of the consensus top contenders for this season have been slow out of the blocks, notably the Clippers, Jazz, Hawks & Nets all wallowing at the bottom of each Conference. Without an upswing, all 4 could be entertaining seismic trade deadline changes.

Williams boosts Pacers to next level

It's early days, but free agency pickup Louis Williams seems to be the missing piece in Indiana, leading the league in steals as well as a top-5 scorer. Can he keep up the pace and keep the Pacers at the top of the East?

Rough start continues in Brooklyn

The Barclays Center has not been a tough place to play so far this season, and pressure is mounting on Dwight Howard's supporting cast. The Nets look almost certain to heavily shake up their roster at the deadline.

Nuggets & Mavericks hold tough in the West

Surprises continue in Denver and Dallas, who both currently sit above .500 and the top 8 in the West. With plenty of heavy contenders off to slow starts, the pressure will be heavy on their shoulders as we head towards the All Star Break to hold their ground.

Sixers avoid Finals hangover

The 76ers look to be bucking the trend that has plagued the Eastern Conference Finalist of the past few seasons, deep in the hunt at the top of the East. After their offseason exits, could they be in the market for valuable pieces on the market from struggling franchises?

Rumoured moves galore as deadline looms

With only a couple of weeks until All-Star break, this year's trade deadline looks to be more active than most, with teams likely to go "All-In" or fold their hand for this season.

Can anyone top the Thunder?

Oklahoma City has proved every prediction correct so far as an unstoppable force behind their big 3, with a franchise-best and league-best record of 40-8. Reinforcements through the trade deadline may be the only cure from a certain Thunder championship in their current form.

Weak East in need of shakeup

With only five teams above .500, the Eastern Conference seems to be in a lull, with multiple contenders failing to start their season on the right foot. Can the likes of Atlanta, Brooklyn and Milwaukee find their rhythm?
