Using the UBR mod I am resetting the NBA to the beginning of the shot clock era and playing through to see how things turn out. I will continue through the years as much as I can. Here is the video of the first season, 1954-55. The season sees a big return from not one but two superstars, an all-time rookie year from Bob Pettit, and a few classic playoff matchups.

New episode is up. In this season, Wilt Chamberlain begins his career and puts the league on notice. After years of coming up short in the playoffs, the Pistons make a change, but what will be the outcome? Also, after his injury in the Finals last season, Bob Cousy takes his playmaking skills to another level.

On a side note, I will be slowing down on the production now that school is starting back up. I've been able to post one every couple of weeks, but while school is in the goal will be once a month. Thanks for watching!

The biggest move in the off-season didn’t involve just one player moving, it involved a whole team! The Philadelphia Warriors packed up and moved to San Francisco. Their move out west forced the two time defending champion Cincinnati Royals to move into the Eastern Conference. This meant that Wilt and Bill Russell were in the same conference along with Oscar Robertson’s New York Knicks and Jerry West’s Syracuse Nationals. This was a stacked conference to say the least.
Image
The move also meant that the title of top team in the west was now a battle between the St. Louis Hawks and Los Angeles Lakers. These two teams had met 4 straight seasons in the playoffs since the infamous draft day swap of Elgin Baylor and Hal Greer.
Once the season started there were surprises right away as the defending eastern conference champion Boston Celtics struggled out of the gate. Just when it seems things couldn’t get worse they lost legendary point guard Bob Cousy to a broken arm. This injury would sideline him for most of the season and force him to contemplate his future in basketball. Rookie John Havlicek was forced into a starting role. He was absolutely stellar in this new role and ended up leading the team in scoring.
Elsewhere in the East the defending champion Royals seemed to be fitting in just fine in their new surroundings as they competed for the top seed with the New York Knicks and Syracuse Nationals. The Nationals were a bit of a surprise but with Jerry West and Jack Twyman each having MVP caliber seasons they proved they could compete with anybody. The three way race would come down to the final day of the season as Oscar Robertson’s late game heroics lifted the Knicks over the Royals to clinch the top seed.
Image
Image
The West was a bit more predictable than the East. The Hawks had Hal Greer and Walter Dukes step up to support their star player Bob Pettit. Elgin Baylor fueled the Lakers posting career best numbers in all categories. The Hawks swept the Lakers in the regular season to clinch the top seed.

RPG: Wilt Chamberlain- 16.84
APG: Oscar Robertson - 8.4
SPG: Jerry West - 1.9
BPG: Wilt Chamberlain - 3.2
MPG: Wilt Chamberlain - 40.5
This was Chamberlain’s third straight MVP making him the first player to win 3 in the league. He also did it by posting low numbers in points and rebounding for his standards. He was also the first player to win 3 all star game MVPs. Jack Twyman finished in the top 5 in MVP voting for the first time in his career. Lenny Wilkens also made an All-NBA team for the first time in his career.
The East proved to be as close as people thought when the playoffs started. The top seeded New York Onocks had their chance at revenge for last season in a matchup with the Boston Celtics. But the Celtics, now which a healthy Cousy had other ideas. They forced the series to game 7 where Cousy almost set a playoff record with 17 assists. The Celtics strength by numbers approach proved once again to be too much for the Knicks.
Image
The Nationals and Royals also came down to a game 7. Guard depth was an issue for the Royals after losing their sixth man Si Green to a broken foot before the playoffs. This issue played right into the hands of the Nationals as the three headed monster of West, Twyman, and Richie Guerin overwhelmed Cincinnati’s backcourt with pressure defense. They also implemented a strategy of flouting Wilt Chamberlain late in games and forcing him to the worst part of his game - free throws. The Royals had to look elsewhere for points in close games and just couldn’t get enough to beat Syracuse and the defending champs were eliminated.
Image
The conference finals matchup between the Celtics and Nationals was a surprise, but it was now about which team would make the most out of the moment. And time has shown again and again that nobody shines in big moments like Bill Russell. He put on a show defensively that would continue through the Finals, averaging over 15 rebounds and 3 blocks and showcasing why he is the best defensive player the game has seen. The Nationals top scoring offense was held in check as the Celtics advanced to their second straight Finals.
In the west the Hawks and the Lakers would meet again in the Conference Finals. After their regular season matchups the Hawks were favored entering the series. That quickly changed after they dropped the first two games at home. The Hawks were a little worse and the Lakers were a lot better than those regulars season showings. Elgin Baylor was on another level averaging almost 40 PPG in this series. He was unguardable and the Lakers pushed the pace with a full court press designed to speed up the Hawks preferred style. Bob Pettit was not as exceptional as he had been throughout the years, perhaps showing signs of wear for the all time minutes leader. The Lakers dropped game three but won games 4 and 5 in convincing fashion, marking the first time in this rivalry that the series did not go to at least six games.
Image
So the Lakers and Celtics would meet again three years after their first meeting in the Finals. The only thing that separated Elgin Baylor in the best player argument with Wilt, Russell, and Pettit was a championship. He was ready to change that. League supremacy was also at stake as both the Lakers and Celtics, along with the Royals, were tied in total championships at this point. Game 1 went down to the wire. But with the score close late in the fourth quarter, the player known as Hondo would etch his name in finals history. John Havlicek caught fire and scored 10 points in the final minutes of the game. Lakers fans were getting flashbacks of when Bill Sharman had done something similar in their previous finals matchup. The Lakers dropped a close game 1 but continued to battle in game 2. Baylor continued his spectacular play, leading both teams in scoring for the series. The Celtics had one more ace up their sleeve as they brought in their sixth man of the year and former Laker Clyde Lovellete for a last second possession down one. The Celtics had acquired Lovellete from the Lakers in an offseason trade. With second remaining the big man caught the ball and drove baseline to give the Celtics the lead. The Lakers tried to answer but Baylor’s last second runner was called off after the refs ruled the ball did not leave his hands in time. The Celtics had escaped with another close victory. Baylor was out for revenge in game three and helped the Lakers get back in the series with another 40 point game. But the Celtics defense proved to be too much for the Lakers for the rest of the series. The Lakers were held to just 36% combined the rest of the way. Russell’s all around defense was on full display as he altered or blocked anything that entered the paint. The exclamation point came in the 3rd quarter of game 5 where Cousy made the play of the series spinning and throwing a behind the back pass to Lovellete who emphatically slammed the ball through the basket in the arena he used to call home. Baylor would have to wait to add a championship to his resume as the Celtics became the leaders in championships. Shortly after the series ended Bob Cousy announced his retirement.

HOF:
Bob Cousy - BOS - Top 5 in MVP voting 2X. Multiple All-NBA selections. Finals MVP in 59 and 60. Best rated point guard at the beginning of the sim. Passing icon. Formed great backcourt with Bill Sharman. His absence after separating his shoulder in the 59 Finals swung the series and he played game 6 with the injury.Clutch point scorer. First to do fancy passes and dribbling. Decided to retire in 63 after breaking arm and missing most of the season. Returned for playoffs off the bench and helped spark the Celtics to a championship as the lowest seed in the East. Had 17 assists in a game 7 to eliminate the top seed New York Knicks. Retired as all time leader in assists and steals.
Carl Braun - NYK/DET/BOS/SFW - Multiple All-NBA selections. Point Guard for the Knicks when they made first ever Finals and later started on championship winning team in 57. Hit first buzzer beater of sim. Pioneered step through shot. Won Sixth man of the year in Boston in his later years and played a big role on a team that made the Finals
In offseason news the Warriors brought back Dolph Schayes as their new head coach. Ed Conlin decided to leave the Celtics for a bigger contract in Detroit. The Pistons also added Neil Johnston as a backup to Walt Bellamy. The Chicago Zephyrs relocated to Baltimore and became the Bullers. The Syracuse Nationals also relocated and became the Philadelphia 76ers. For the draft the Bullets took Jerry Lucas first overall. Lucas is the most accomplished college player of all time and can make an immediate impact. The Warriors took Nate Thurmond 3rd as Dolph Schayes now has a young big with superstar upside. The Pistons were able to get big man Gus Johnson and the Hawks took a chance on a small guard named Larry Brown.

Opening night of the 1964 season would be one that changed the league forever. The NBA returned to Philadelphia as the newly rebranded 76ers faced off against the Cincinnati Royals and the dominant Wilt Chamberlain. The Royals were eager to get back on top after being eliminated by this team last year in the playoffs. With the Royals clinging to a small lead in the first quarter Wilt went up for a shot near the basket. Big man Walter Dukes slid under Wilt to try and take a charge and then the future of the league changed. Wilt collided with Dukes and when he came back down he crumpled to the floor in a way no one had ever seen before. He grabbed the back of his leg and everything went quiet. Wilt had never been injured before, had never missed a game until this moment. But everyone knew that was about to change. Wilt was assessed and it was determined he had damaged his achilles tendon. The optimism the Royals had for the season quickly faded and turned into dissension. It seemed that the only people aware of how severe the injury truly was were Wilt, the doctors, and the owner. Wilt was immediately ruled out for a few months, the beginning of January would be the earliest he could return to activities. When those few months were coming to an end, no one was sure if Chamberlain would return. No other announcements came and the team and coaching staff just had to come to work and hope Wilt would be waiting for them in the locker room. This caused a major rift between ownership and the locker room and eventually led Cliff Hagan to demanding a trade. The forward was not going to waste the final years waiting around to see if his team was going to be able to compete or not.
A team that was eager to take the Royals up on a deal was the St. Louis Hawks. The top team in the west last season, they had struggled to start out the year. They began the year by losing to the Baltimore Bullets (formerly the Chicago Zephyrs) in their first ever game in Baltimore. #1 pick Jerry Lucas showed promise as he finished with a double double and was the team's leading scorer while facing off against the great Bob Pettit. Another loss to the Bullets later in season finally forced ownership’s hand. Changes in staff were made and the first move new management made was a big deal that involved sending Tom Gola to Cincinnati for Hagan. The new look Hawks seemed reenergized a few days later as they beat the Los Angeles Lakers. However things wouldn’t be good for long. A week later Bob Pettit was injured and out for the first time in his storied career.
With the Hawks faltering, a new team out west stepped up and took the reins. In just his first year as coach, hall of famer Dolph Schayes had his San Francisco Warriors atop the league through the first half of the season. The roster was filled with former teammates of Schayes and the chemistry between the team was easy to see. They had a strength in numbers approach spotlighted by their rookie and eventual 6th man of the year Nate Thurmond.
The 1964 All Star Game went down as one of the best in history but it certainly didn’t start out that way. The East took a huge lead in the first half but the West battled back behind Elgin Baylor. With the game tight, forward Tommy Heinsohn rallied the East back and the shot making between him and Baylor was a sight to see. Oscar Robertson and Maurice Stokes hit big shots for the West late in the game and in the final seconds the West was unable to get a shot off. The East won the game but Elgin Baylor was awarded MVP for his impressive performance.
The New York Knicks once again finished with the best record in the East. In what was a replay of last year Oscar Robertson hit another game winner in the last game of the season to clinch the top seed, narrowly edging out Boston and Philadelphia. Cincinnati failed to stay above .500 without Chamberlain and Hagan.
Out West the Warriors finished the season with the best record and Schayes would win coach of the year in his first season. The Los Angeles Lakers struggled integrating their older players in new roles but Elgin Baylor once again set career highs in points, rebounds, and assists. The Hawks never got things figured out and finished around.500 while the Bullets and Pistons finished behind them.

After leading the Knicks to another top seed, Oscar Robertson was awarded with the MVP. He also set an assists record while Bill Russell, who finished second set a steals record and continued his streak of DPOYs. Clyde Lovellete made an All-NBA team for the first time since he played for the Lakers and Jerry Lucas was named to an All-NBA team in his rookie season.
In a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference Finals Celtics matched up with the Philadelphia 76ers a round earlier this year. With a little more experience this time around the 76ers took care of business on their home floor and the series went to a 7th game. Jerry West started out hot in game 7 scoring 20 first half points. The Celtics Clyde Lovellete answered with 18 of his own and the game stayed locked through the 3rd quarter. But in the fourth quarter the 76ers went cold and could not keep up with the Celtics. They shot 30% in the quarter and that is what sealed their fate.
The Knicks were waiting in the conference finals. The Celtics had their number in the two previous seasons including a classic conference finals series a couple seasons ago. This one was tied after four games, setting up a tense game 5. While Bill Russell had elevated his game, it seemed that Oscar Robertson was not at the MVP level that he was in the regular season. That changed in game 5 as he broke the 20 point barrier for the first time all postseason. The game came down to the last minute. TheKnicks had the ball and Oscar Robertson drove the line and tossed up a layup that went in while being fouled by John Havlicek. The normally stoic Robertson let his emotion show after the shot, an indication of how much this meant for him. The free throw put the game out of reach and the Celtics couldn’t recover from the heartbreaking loss. They dropped the next game as the Knicks ended the series.
Neither the Warriors or Lakers were tested in their route to meet for the Western Conference title. They both took care of business against the Pistons and Hawks respectively. The two teams from California would meet for the first time ever to go to the Finals. The team effort of the Warriors seemed to be too much through 5 games as they took the series lead. But Baylor would get some help in game 6 as Dick Barnett scored a playoff career high 27 points. He outplayed his counterpart Sam Jones, who had a tough night shooting and it seemed like the pressure was getting to him as his struggles continued in game 7. Barnett was once again on fire and the Lakers led heading into the fourth. But reserve Frank Selvy went on a scoring run to bring the Warriors back. The Lakers tired legs started to show as the Warriors ran them out of the building scoring 40 points in the fourth quarter for a big comeback win.
Dolph Schayes had an accomplished career but he had never won a title. Now he was four wins away in just his first year as head coach. To get there he would have to beat a Knicks team that had never lost to the Warriors in the franchise’s history. It had been four seasons since the Knicks made the Finals and lost in a classic battle to the Cincinnati Royals. They didn’t know how to win as a group then but they did now. The energy of the Warriors was no match for the experience of the Knicks. After splitting the first two games the Knicks blew out the Warriors in game 3. While game 4 was close, every time the Knicks needed a basket, they got one. The Warriors could not stop the league’s best offense. Late in the fourth quarter Tommy Heinsohn hit a hook shot over a double team and then followed it up the next possession with a fadeaway as the shot clock expired. That basket put the game away and gave them a 3-1 lead. The Knicks closed out the series in the next game sparked by Robertson and Heinsohn. The Knicks were champions again, winning their first title since 1957. The lone holdover from that roster was Heinsohn who was a rookie back then. Oscar Robertson was awarded MVP of the Finals.

HOF:
Neil Johnston - PHI, STL, SYR, DET. Top 5 in MVP voting 2X. 3X All NBA selection.
Averaged over 30 a game in Philly for first two seasons, but left and became first big free agent signing when he teamed up with Bob Pettit and the Hawks. Despite having his scoring reduced in St. Louis, he always was a physical presence on defense and rebounding. Hit game winner in 59 All-Star game. His physical style of play wore on smaller guards who played against and was involved in multiple plays that left star opposing players injured including a brutal screen on Bob Cousy in the 59 Finals that swung the series. Retired as all time leader in games played

Clyde Lovellette - MNL/BOS - 1 LP - All-NBA 6MOY in 63
Played a big role in every season for the first decade of the sim. Started for Minneapolis championship teams and continued to start through the beginning of the Baylor years. Traded to Boston where he won 6MOY and got revenge against the Lakers with a game winner in G2 of the 63 Finals against them. Started next year and averaged 20 and 12 in his final season. Strong base made him immovable and unstoppable when he put his shoulder into defenders. Great touch around rim

Ray Felix- NYK/LAL 2X All-NBA DPOY in 55
First ever shot blocker. Anchored the Knicks for two Finals appearances, winning in 57. Later played for the Lakers and made two Finals with them as well. Retired as all time leader in rebounds and blocks.

The Hawks wasted no time in making changes as they traded Hal Greer to the 76ers in exchange for Richie Guerin and Al Attles. The Hawks had the second highest payroll but the second worst record in the league. With Greer’s stats declining over the last two seasons the Hawks wanted to move on from his big contract. They also fired their coach and brought in journeyman Jack Mcmahon as their head coach. He brought back former coach Alex Hannum as his assistant. The Pistons also made a big splash as they brought in legend Bob Cousy to replace Hannum as their head coach. Cousy retired last season after winning his third championship with the Celtics. The move was done by an organization that had fallen on hard times over the years and are eager to get back to the success of the 50s. They are hoping that Cousy can break through to his former teammate Ed Conlin who had a disappointing first season in year one of a big contract.
The Pistons wasted no time in getting an apprentice for Cousy. They selected guard Walt Hazzard from UCLA with the first pick of the draft. Hazzard brings with him a winning pedigree from college to a team in desperate need of success. The Hawks selected Olympian Jim Barnes of Texas Western with the second pick of the draft in hopes of finding someone who can eventually take over for Bob Pettit when he retires. Willis Reed went to the 76ers, and the New York Knicks selected native playground legend Connie Hawkins.
In free agency Maurice Stokes decided to leave the Cincinnati Royals to sign with the Boston Celtics. Royals management was shocked at the decision and just two years after winning back to back titles the Royals have just one starter from that team available for opening night and no clear timetable on Wilt’s return from injury. But the Royals replaced Stokes with Bob Boozer who left the Warriors. The decision came as a shock to the Warriors as well who had promised the same amount of money the Royals did. Johnny Kerr also left San Francisco for St. Louis ending one of the best stories of the season on a down note for the Warriors.

Oscar Robertson stood court side and watched the championship banner being raised to the rafters. It brought a different feeling than any in his career. No longer climbing to the mountaintop, he now had to prove that he and the Knicks could stay there.. So when they fell behind against the Celtics on opening night he didn’t panic and led a 4th quarter comeback. But even with his high level of play he felt reserved at the fact that other teams had made changes to their roster while the Knicks had mostly stood pat. They took a chance on Connie Hawkins in the draft, and it seemed to work out as he had made the starting lineup to begin the season. But the Celtics added Maurice Stokes, a player with championship pedigree that fit the team-first approach perfectly. The 76ers had added Hal Greer, arguably the best shooting guard in the league. The Knicks had to be better, but how much better could the big O be?

Robertson knew this season was about his legacy and he added to it when he put up a triple double on Christmas against the Royals. With Hawkins sidelined with a knee injury sustained off the court, Robertson hit the boards and scored in the paint to provide the Knicks with a moment that will live on in franchise history. The Royals were outmanned that night in the paint and it was obvious. They had struggled all season long but they were not far away from the return of Wilt Chamberlain. Chamberlain suffered an Achilles injury opening night of last season and had not played since that night. The roster had gone through major changes in that time with Lenny Wilkens and Guy Rodgers being the only holdovers from the championship season of 63. He returned to face the Pistons over a calendar year after the injury and matched up against all-star Walt Bellamy. His first shot was blocked by Bellamy, but in the second half he went to the rim with such strength he sent Pistons players to the floor as he dunked the ball. The ups and downs of the night foreshadowed the rest of the season for Wilt and the Royals. There were some bright spots, but with Wilt on a games and minutes limit for the season, his impact was limited and the Royals would finish last in the East.

The 76ers were locked in from the opening tip of the season. Years of developing talent had intersected with an offseason where they made two crucial moves with the trade for Hal Greer and drafting of Willis Reed. Jerry West and Greer made life extremely difficult for opposing guards and rReed was made a case for being the steal of the draft. They blitzed other teams with their offense but their calling card was their defense, allowing a record low points per game. They went on a winning streak that lasted a couple months in the middle of the season and the records for most wins in a season was soon within reach. They set the record with a few weeks left in the season and added to it to become the first team with over 70 wins in a season. They hit the postseason determined to exercise the demons of seasons past.

To say Elgin Baylor continued to defy expectations is an understatement. He was at the top of his game and every year he improved on something. This season he jumped up another level on the defensive side of the ball. He not only protected the rim like a center but was a ballhawk on the perimeter like a guard. He was now creating highlight plays on both ends of the floor with regularity. Perhaps the most amazing part of all this was that the energy expended on that end did not take anything away from his offensive output. He once again led the league in scoring and finished in the top 5 in all major categories. With a season full of incredible moments the image that stood out was a play made in a March game against the Warriors. While on a fast break Hot Rod Hundley threw a pass near the basket. Baylor jumped in the air and adjusted to the ball and threw it down the rim. It was a move that had never been seen before and it highlighted Elgin’s historical season.

Baylor nearly became one of only a few players to win MVP and DPOY in the same year, narrowly losing out to Bill Russell who led the league in blocks and steals again. He has won the award in every season of his career. Lenny Wilkens, Dick Barnett and Zelmo Beaty all made their first All-NBA team. The Rookie of the Year race was pretty close but the Hawk won out in the end. Willis Reed still managed to take home the Sixth Man of the Year award.

A last second shot from Walt Bellamy sent the Pistons to a matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers. It was the brightest point to another season of struggle for the organization. In Bob Cousy’s first season as coach the team did not see much improvement, and while first overall pick Walt Hazzard made an impact, it was nowhere near the type of impact that Hawkins and Reed had made. Ed Conlin continued to struggle and eventually his role was given to second year man Dave Debusschere by season’s end. The Lakers had no trouble with them.

The other matchup in the West was between the San Francisco Warriors and the St. Louis Hawks. It was a breakout series for Nate Thurmond. He denied Bob Pettit constantly and made life difficult for him when he did get the ball. In close games the Hawks couldn’t go to their most reliable option. On the other end Sam Jones stepped up for the Warriors and hit clutch shots in game 5 and 6 to win the series. After the roster changes Dolph Schayes had his team in the exact position they were in last year, a series against the Lakers to go to the Finals.

The only speculation in the Royals playoff run was how much Wilt Chamberlain was going to play. In the end it didn’t matter as their brief postseason ended after 5 games with the 76ers. The Celtics and Knicks met again in what has become a yearly tradition. The Celtics unexpectedly had a hard time integrating Maurice Stokes to their lineup. They had lost the point production of Clyde Lovellete from a season before and had not yet found a way to replicate it. But Auerbach stayed the course during the rough times. He knew the move to bring in Stokes made them a team worthy of the championship, but no one knew when they would show it. In game 4 they were down with little time remaining. A loss would put them down 3-1 in the series and things looked bleak. The Knicks came out of a timeout ready to deliver their knockout punch, but the Celtics fought back. It started with a Russell block that led to a John Havlicek layup. It continued when KC Jones ripped Frank Ramsey and scored on the other end. Then Stokes rebounded the ball and pushed it to Russell for a basket. Eventually the Celtics not only got back in the game but took the lead. The Knicks needed to stop the bleeding and down 2 that found an opening. The Celtics pressure forced the ball out of the Knicks hand but leading scorer Tommy Heinsohn caught in on the wing. He drove to the basket on Tom Sanders and went into a layup. He heard a whistle, tossed up his shot, and watched as it banked off the backboard and through the basket. He turned and looked to his teammates to celebrate the big shot, but instead he saw them pleading their case to the refs. The whistle was not for a shooting foul but for a shot clock violation. The Knicks felt that Heinsohn was fouled before the shot but the decision was final. Russell would tip in a missed shot on the next possession and put the game away. The Celtics finished the game on a 14-0 run over the last 6:48 of the game. It was the longest scoring drought the Knicks experienced since Robertson began his career. It was also the turning point in the series. Game 5 played out as an opposite of the previous game with the Knicks going on a big run to put them back in the game. In another one score game, Robertson grabbed a rebound and pushed it the length of the floor. He challenged Russell head on and crashed to the floor as the shot was sent off the backboard. It fell into the hands of a trailing Hawkins who quickly put up a shot of his own. Russell was quicker, springing once again from the floor and sending the shot away from the rim. Havlicek chased down the ball and the Knicks would not get another chance to tie the game. The rugged defense of the Celtics had turned the series in their favor and gotten into the heads of their opponents. The Knicks shot just 36% in game 6 and ended their title reign in Boston as the ghosts of Celtics past had seemed to haunt them once again.

The Warriors liked their chances in a rematch with the Lakers. After game 1, they liked them even more. The Warriors put on a physical display of basketball led by Thurmond and won in a blowout. He finished the game with 21 rebounds and ignited a fire under his teammates with his tough play. However, that fire was quickly extinguished. The Lakers evened the series with a blowout of their own in game 2. They then won the next two by a combined 65 points. With the series heading back to LA the Warriors certainly could have folded, but they came out swinging in game 5. Sam Jones had a huge game and had the Warriors in the lead most of the way. But Dick Barnett did not want to extend this series any longer. He led a Lakers comeback from down double digits in the fourth quarter. Over the last two seasons he had stepped up from his role as a support role for Baylor to a solidified All-League player. Last season against these Warriors he had an outstanding game 6, and performing on that stage had given him confidence this time around. He scored 8 points in the quarter as the Lakers fast break attack put the Warriors down for good. The Lakers were headed to their 5th Finals, their 3rd since Baylor was in the league.

The 76ers had come far. While their ascension seemed natural, it had taken years of developing their talent, figuring out the right rotations, and making the right moves at the right time to achieve what they had this season. The Celtics stood in their way, but on paper didn’t have the offensive firepower to keep up. They took the floor with confidence to start the series. The Celtics played their usual rugged defense but it was the 26 points from Tom Sanders that the 76ers had not expected. The game wasn’t close, as Russell and Stokes controlled both ends of the paint for the Celtics. The 76ers were beat up in a way they hadn’t been all season long. Unfortunately things didn’t turn around in game 2 and the 76ers were now in a hole. In Boston, Sanders bested his playoff career high and scored 28 while holding Jack Twyman to 1-10 from the floor. In one week the 76ers had gone from a team destined to win the title to one game away from elimination. They had Sanders to blame. Largely seen as a defense first player, he had never been better at both sides of the game than he had been this past week. He suffocated his opposing matchup and ran hard in transition for finishes that electrified his team. He had played an important role for championship Celtic teams before but this was a different type of impact he was having. The 76ers won game 4, but Sanders had another 20+ point game in Philly and the dream season for the 76ers ended in a nightmare. There was nothing they could do but sit and reflect on how far they had come.
