Wow! Westbrook's luck has been terrible the past couple of seasons.

So...Wizards vs Jazz, I guess!

Spurs fall short in three team race in West, Kings return to postseason

The San Antonio Spurs were the unlucky ones at the end of the regular season, falling half a game short of a postseason berth despite a Player of the Month effort from Chris Paul. One team to make their playoff return in the Spurs absence is the Sacramento Kings, utilising deadline pickup Mike Conley and superb play from C Greg Monroe to set up a first round matchup with the top seeded Pelicans.

Pistons playoff drought extends to 9 years

With the Suns locking in their playoff spot, the Detroit Pistons now sit as the lone franchise to not taste the postseason in the 2010's. Forever focussing on the future, Detroit will need to make the relevant moves to keep their burgeoning stars happy, including consensus Rookie of the Year Lonzo Ball, and break the drought before it hits a full decade for the Motor City.

Pressure falls on Harden, Whiteside to carry Thunder

Despite sewing up the second seed over the last few weeks of the season, the loss of Russell Westbrook weighs heavy on the hearts of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The squad will now lean on James Harden and deadline acquisition Hassan Whiteside to fly the flag against the Rockets, the only team that has handed the franchise a first round exit in their history.

Re: The 2K10 & Beyond Project - Season 17/18: Season Review - Lottery Teams

Postby jubba910 on Sat Oct 01, 2022 5:25 pm

Season Review – Lottery Teams

30. Chicago Bulls (17-65)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Malcolm Brodgon (81), Marquese Chriss (77) (2YRT), Jaylen Brown (76) (2YRT), Justise Winslow (74) (T), Terry Rozier (74) (T), Garrett Temple (74), Nemanja Bjelica (74), Beno Udrih (73), Jarnell Stokes (73), Frank Jackson (72) (T), Meyers Leonard (71), Livio Jean-Charles (70)

A brutal but expected result in the Windy City. With a majority of their youthful pieces still locked into team options, it's a continued focus on the future for the Bulls. The one piece to make fans nervous is Malcolm Brogdon, with the guard out of contract, the promise of postseason basketball may draw their emerging star to a contender. With the Celtics' first rounder likely in their pockets pending a lottery miracle, a mid first round steal is currently the highest hope for Chicago.

29. Los Angeles Lakers (24-58)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Sean Kilpatrick (76), Emmanuel Mudiay (75) (T), Ivica Zubac (75), Sam Dekker (75) (T), Rodney McGruder (75) (T), Luol Deng (74), Quincy Pondexter (74), Greivis Vasquez (74), Josh Hart (71) (T)

With their worst record since 1957-58 season, there's an abundance of improvement needed to reinstate the Lake Show in Los Angeles. A refresh is badly needed for the league's second-most successful franchise, starting with this year's offseason. With Kawhi Leonard being an LA native, can the Lakers put together enough of a deal to bring the Klaw home? Or will the Lakers wallow in the doldrums of the West for a while longer?

28. Brooklyn Nets (25-57)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Marcus Smart (80), Rodney Stuckey (75), Spencer Hawes (74), Devin Harris (74), Malik Beasley (73) (2YRT), Pascal Siakam (73) (2YRT), Jordan Bell (72) (2YRT), Harry Giles (71)

A streak of unlikely postseason appearances has come to an end, with the Nets needing to pick up the pieces to head back towards the playoffs. Dishing out Mike Conley after one season of playing time, the Nets now look to the future around Dennis Smith Jr. and Khris Middleton. Hopefully joining them will be their biggest piece to maintain; Marcus Smart. Now out of his rookie contract, the hard-nosed defender will receive plenty of attention from contenders. Can the Nets retain Smart and find enough help to make this team one to fear next season?

27. Denver Nuggets (29-53)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Andrew Wiggins (86), D'Angelo Russell (81) (T), Frank Kaminsky (78) (T), Shabazz Muhammad (76), Caris LeVert (76) (2YRT), Montrezl Harrell (75), Pierre Jackson (75), Jerian Grant (74) (T), Andrew Nicholson (71)

A surprising crash and burn for the West leaders of last season, well and truly underperforming what was expected of them. The trade of DeAndre Jordan for Andrew Wiggins was a play for the future, but no one could've expected such a drastic difference on the court. With a total win difference of 32 between last season and this season, things need to turn around quickly for the Mile High City. Locking in Wiggins long-term may not be as simple as once thought, with this disappointing result possibly creating warning signs to see him field offers elsewhere.

26. Charlotte Hornets (31-51)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Alec Burks (75), Malcolm Delaney (74), Kris Dunn (73) (2YRT), Jeff Green (73), Rashad Vaughn (72) (T), Dillon Brooks (70) (T)

A constantly shifting franchise, the Hornets now appear to be fully committing to a rebuild, after multiple failed attempts to become a contender. Landing some valuable picks for Hassan Whiteside, Charlotte now sits in a position to comfortably lull at the bottom of the East, with a long-term plan to bring sustained success behind the likes of Jayson Tatum and Kris Dunn - especially with the former losing half the season due to injury.

25. Memphis Grizzlies (32-50)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: JaMychal Green (76), Juan Hernangomez (75) (2YRT), Gerald Henderson (74), Andrew Bogut (74), Dragan Bender (73) (2YRT), Jordan McRae (72)

The injury of Kawhi Leonard made it a miserable season in Memphis, with the superstar on the sidelines and unable to be shipped to another franchise, the Grizzlies wallowed at the bottom of the Southwest. We enter an exciting time for the Blues City however, with Leonard likely to garner a significant package to boost the team's future, and build around their multiple first round selections over the past few seasons.

24. Dallas Mavericks (32-50)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Salah Mejri (75), Deyonta Davis (74), Darrell Arthur (74), Stanley Johnson (74) (T), Trey Burke (71), Semi Ojeleye (71) (T)

A failed attempt to jump up the West standings, the Mavericks find themselves again finishing well out of the playoff race. With Dwyane Wade, Rudy Gay and Rajon Rondo all signed on for at least another year respectively, it's likely to see Dallas stay in a similar position next season before fully hitting the reset button that they've refused to hit since the mid-2000's.

23. Detroit Pistons (36-46)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Aaron Gordon (79), Seth Curry (78), Al Jefferson (75), Denzel Valentine (75) (2YRT), Domantas Sabonis (74) (2YRT), Mario Hezonja (74) (T)

Now in a 9-year playoff drought, the Pistons continue to try to piece together a contending team. Full of youthful talent, the Motor City can rest on the great first season display by Rookie of the Year Lonzo Ball, who appears to be on a brighter path than #1 pick Markelle Fultz. Maintaining Aaron Gordon and Seth Curry will be a top priority, while Al Jefferson looks likely to stick around and continue his mentorship of up-and-coming big man Domantas Sabonis.

22. Toronto Raptors (36-46)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Jae Crowder (81), T.J. McConnell (76), Jahlil Okafor (75) (T), Noah Vonleh (74), Joffrey Lauvergne (74), Miles Plumlee (71)

Following in the footsteps of the Denver Nuggets, the East leaders of last season also find themselves on the outside of the postseason. Major regression from their big man trio of Jahlil Okafor and Tristan Thompson looks to be the biggest issue for the Raptors, while DeMar DeRozan continues to shine brightest for Canada's lone team. With such a fairytale season last year, do The North stay the course, or pull the trigger on a rebuild?

21. Boston Celtics (36-46)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Joel Embiid (87), Isaiah Thomas (87), Ricky Rubio (80), T.J. Warren (79), Jonathon Simmons (76), Justin Anderson (75) (T), Chandler Parsons (75), Ian Clark (75), Jose Calderon (73)

Missing the playoffs is a worst case scenario for Beantown, with their two stars both out of contract. Joel Embiid and Isaiah Thomas will likely be fielding offers before deciding to stay, leaving the Celtics exposed to the mammoth contract they paid to Paul Millsap last offseason. Tipped to be amongst the elite before the season, this underachievement and the 7th seed finish of last season is well below what their fans expected from this lineup. Time will tell whether they can right the course with their current crop, or be on a highway to the bottom of the conference.

20. Atlanta Hawks (36-46)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Myles Turner (84) (T), Gary Harris (82), Kenneth Faried (79), Jordan Clarkson (78) (P), Tony Parker (78), Danny Green (77), Jerami Grant (74), David West (73), Darius Miller (73) (T), Joe Harris (72), Shane Larkin (72)

Another positive finish for the Hawks, who have further invested in youth as they gear themselves up for a postseason push next year after only just missing out this season. Jordan Clarkson's player option looms large, with his possible defection to the open market leaving the Hawks empty-handed from the trade of two-time All Star Nicolas Batum to the Spurs. Gary Harris looks likely to also test free agency, creating a situation as to which SG the Atlanta franchise looks to retain. With a core of Myles Turner and Jamal Murray plus either Clarkson or Harris staying, the Hawks look in great stead to build on this season and make the playoffs in 2019.

19. Portland Trail Blazers (39-43)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: LaMarcus Aldridge (84), Wayne Ellington (75), Kris Humphries (74), Dante Cunningham (73), Sergio Rodriguez (73), Archie Goodwin (72)

A terrible year for the Blazers, seeing the likes of the Kings and Rockets surpass them and make the playoffs despite having a much a stronger lineup on-paper. LaMarcus Aldridge does look set to stay in Rip City, but without a hot start, Draymond Green could be on the way out of Portland at next season's end.

18. Los Angeles Clippers (40-42)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Ty Lawson (76), Kelly Oubre Jr. (75) (T), Thomas Robinson (74), Richard Jefferson (74) (T), Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (73) (2YRT), Diamond Stone (70)

Similar to the Hawks, the Clippers can take a lot of positives out of this finish. Boasting a fresh-faced lineup with De'Aaron Fox, CJ McCollum and Jarrett Allen alongside mainstay Blake Griffin, LA's second franchise was knocking on the door of a postseason berth. With all important pieces locked in, another season with some further bolstering of role players could see them crack the top 8 in the West.

17. San Antonio Spurs (41-41)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Elfrid Payton (78), Trevor Booker (77), Larry Nance Jr. (77) (T), Boris Diaw (75), Daniel Theis (73) (T), Kay Felder (71) (2YRT)

After finishing as the 6th seed last season, the San Antonio find themselves again on the outside of the postseason. With an aging roster around Chris Paul, it's likely something has to change to re-juvenate the franchise that not long ago was the most consistent in the league. Finding CP3 a bonafide second star will be the top priority for the Spurs, likely forfeiting more of their future to save the present.

The Knicks exact their revenge on the Heat, taking a convincing sweep into the second round, and ending Miami's 4-year streak of making the Conference Semifinals.

(3) Milwaukee Bucks vs (6) Indiana Pacers
Game 1: IND 98 @ MIL 107, Kemba Walker, 25 points, 5 ast
Game 2: IND 92 @ MIL 114, Kemba Walker - 31 pts, 7 reb, 6 ast

MIL wins 4-2

The Bucks bested the feisty Pacers, in a matchup most felt nervous about with Milwaukee's previous postseason form. The Paul George/Kemba Walker duo lives on, setting up another Conference Semifinals matchup with hopes to be different to those in the past.

(2) Cleveland Cavaliers vs (7) Philadelphia 76ers
Game 1: PHI 86 @ CLE 99, LeBron James, 19 points, 9 reb, 11 ast

Conference Semifinals: Playoff Tree

Image

Season Review – First Round Eliminations

16. Orlando Magic (38-44)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Gordon Hayward (89), Julius Randle (79), Dario Saric (79) (T), Yogi Ferrell (75), Alex Len (75)

A positive bounce back for the Magic, making the playoffs after hitting the bottom of the East last season. With Donovan Mitchell, Josh Jackson and Nikola Vucevic being the future, Gordon Hayward may be on the outs to another contender. Julius Randle and Dario Saric as a PF tandem will be key to retain as Orlando tries to pull together another run at their first championship.

15. Philadelphia 76ers (40-42)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Devin Booker (85) (T), Ben Simmons (80) (2YRT), J.J. Barea (77), Willie Cauley-Stein (76) (T), Bismack Biyombo (76), Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (76) (T), Shabazz Napier (73), Henry Ellenson (72) (2YRT)

A season to build on for the Sixers, with most key pieces locked in on team options. The cheque book will take a hit next offseason however with Devin Booker coming out of his rookie deal, however with Ben Simmons, Al Horford and Markelle Fultz locked in, The City of Brotherly Love looks to be on it's best path since their shock Finals appearance in 2013.

14. Sacramento Kings (41-41)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Mike Conley (87), Taurean Prince (76) (2YRT), Brandon Jennings (73), Cameron Payne (73) (T), Joseph Young (73), John Jenkins (70)

A postseason appearance desperately needed for the Kings with their trading of potential franchise PG Dennis Smith Jr. With Mike Conley likely to lock in long-term and a career year for Greg Monroe, the question now turns to who can join them in pushing further up the West next season, could there be enough stock in their youth to acquire California-native Kawhi Leonard?

13. Houston Rockets (41-41)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Kristaps Porzingis (86) (T), Clint Capela (81), Brandon Ingram (78) (2YRT), Jeremy Lin (78), Nene (78), Tim Frazier (75), Nick Young (75), Davis Bertans (73) (T), Troy Daniels (73), Wesley Johnson (72)

Another scrappy finish to the regular season to sneak into the postseason, the Rockets continue to verge on the point of serious contender. The main priority will be to retain Jeremy Lin and Clint Capela, with the latter likely to be high on team's sign list. Further development of Kristaps Porzingis and Brandon Ingram can only see this team continue to flower, with hopefully a less chaotic last month of the season and a playoff spot locked in.

12. Indiana Pacers (42-40)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Andre Iguodala (78), Jared Sullinger (76), Ian Mahinmi (75), Tony Snell (75), Trey Lyles (75) (T), D.J. Augustin (74), Andrew Harrison (74), Juwan Evans (72) (T)

One of the biggest surprises post-deadline, the Indiana Pacers were written off by all pundits after the loss of Chris Bosh and Wesley Matthews. However, playing some of his best basketball of his career, Andre Iguodala turned back the clock alongside Derrick Rose and Bojan Bogdanovic to make build a postseason run. With this success likely though to be a one-off, the Pacers still sit in flux, and with Iguodala likely a sought-after piece for a contender, could be back to square one in their rebuild.

11. Miami Heat (42-40)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Kyrie Irving (91), Trevor Ariza (78), Bobby Portis (77) (T), Tyler Ulis (77), Aaron Brooks (74), Kyle Anderson (74), Quincy Acy (73), Josh McRoberts (70)

A painful sweep for the South Beach franchise, who did not plan on such a sour end to their season. In a contract year for their superstar PG Kyrie Irving, it's still a mystery to whether he will commit long-term, or jump to another team in championship contention. In the latter situation, predict a complete restructure for the perennial contenders.

10. Phoenix Suns (48-34)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Jabari Parker (85), Zach LaVine (81), Thon Maker (77) (2YRT), Alan Williams (77) (2YRT), K.J. McDaniels (70), Derrick Williams (73), Stan Roberts (72)

After being thrown in the deep end, the Suns learned to swim, and quickly. After what was expected to be a rough first year in the newly-minted Midwest division, John Wall and co. shattered expectations with a fantastic season and their first postseason visit in 9 years. Losing out to the playoff-savvy Warriors in a tough Game 7, there's much to look forward to in Arizona in the years to come.

9. Utah Jazz (54-28)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Rodney Hood (79), Marreese Speights (75), Nik Stauskas (74) (T), Deron Williams (74), Dejounte Murray (74), Jameer Nelson (74), Malachi Richardson (71) (2YRT)

A shock first round exit for the reigning champions, who most considered a red-hot favourite to return to The Finals once again. Battling the loss of Jimmy Butler for a majority of the regular season, and also the loss of Eric Gordon post-All-Star break, the Jazz's third place finish in the West could be seen as a success. With Davis, Butler & Gobert all locked in for next season, Utah look set to run it back.

I'm going to pick Wizards over Knicks in five, Cavaliers over Bucks in six, Pelicans over Warriors in five, and Thunder over Timberwolves in seven.

I still have a chance to get one prediction completely right, but 2/2 on series winners so far!

Conference Finals: Playoff Tree

Image

Season Review – Conference Semifinals Eliminations

8. Minnesota Timberwolves (43-39)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Mason Plumlee (79) (P), JaVale McGee (77), Jamal Crawford (77), Raymond Felton (75), Willie Reed (75), Al-Farouq Aminu (74), Tyus Jones (74) (T), Patrick McCaw (74)

After slaying the reigning champions in the first round, the Timberwolves ran out of steam against the titanic Thunder. A second-straight Sixth Man of the Year award for Mason Plumlee could see him abandon his player option for a starting role elsewhere, while Jamal Crawford will be essential to retain for their bench unit. Could the possible departing of Plumlee and McGee see the Minnesota franchise enter the free agency market for a marquee center?

7. New York Knicks (47-35)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Buddy Hield (78) (2YRT), Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (76), Langston Galloway (74), Jeff Withey (74), Mindaugas Kuzminskas (74), Jordan Hill (73)

Another solid season for the Knicks, as they put up a valiant effort against the top-seeded Wizards, including a coming-of-age moment for burgeoning superstar Giannis Antetokounmpko. With their young core locked in, another solid piece alongside Giannis, Drummond and Hield could see New York break through to the top of the East as they did earlier this decade with LeBron James.

6. Golden State Warriors (51-31)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Taj Gibson (77), Monta Ellis (75), Jakob Poeltl (74) (2YRT), Delon Wright (74), Doug McDermott (73), C.J. Watson (73)

Another shattering Game 7 loss for the Bay Area, as the Warriors fail to make the Conference Finals once again. Needing to capatilise on the primes of both Stephen Curry and DeMarcus Cousins, the Warriors will no doubt be active in the free agent market to ensure their contendership continues.

5. Milwaukee Bucks (54-28)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Chris Bosh (83), Amir Johnson (75), Dante Exum (74), Aron Baynes (74), Georgios Papagiannis (74) (2YRT), Leandro Barbosa (73)

Despite mixing up the formula with the trading of Andre Iguodala and Andrew Bogut for Wesley Matthews, Chris Bosh and Enes Kanter, the Bucks fall again the Conference Semifinals, and are still yet to taste the Conference Finals in the George-Walker era. Can anything be done this off-season to ensure they can match the likes of the Wizards and Cavaliers next year?

Playoffs: Conference Finals

(2) OKC 109 @ (1) NO 104
OKC wins 4-1

Business as usual for Thunder, return to Finals

Despite still missing MVP Russell Westbrook, Hassan Whiteside and James Harden continue to run through the Western Conference with ease, sending the franchise to its 6th NBA Finals in 7 years.

(1) WAS 108 @ (2) CLE 99

Wizards romp through Cleveland, sweep to Finals

Image
In what most touted as the most interesting possible matchup this Playoffs ended with little fanfare, with Kevin Durant the Wizards decimating last year's East champions in four games, and heading to the Finals for the first time in 39 years.

The matchup we wanted/predicted, but I didn't expect a sweep of the Cavs. Decision 2.0 incoming? (Or would that be 3.0?)
